As its 56th edition – running July 1-9 – kicks off, Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival is ready to party like it’s 2019.
“We can’t predict how many people will come, as some still don’t want to travel, but it’s supposed to be as close to [pre-pandemic] 2019 as possible,” says artistic director Karel Och, noting the audience is still one of the festival’s biggest assets.
It’s their enthusiasm for cinema that has “enchanted even big Hollywood stars,” echoes president Jiří Bartoška, hoping for a great atmosphere in Karlovy Vary.
But there have been significant changes at the festival, starting with the death of the longtime artistic advisor and former artistic director Eva Zaoralová in March.
“When it happened, it was just like when Bowie died — certain people you just consider immortal,” says Och. The festival will celebrate Zaoralová with an exhibition of photographs and a screening of her favorite film,...

Argentina’s “Ayelén and the Forest Shadow,” Uruguay’s “The Eagle Heist,” Mexico’s “Journey to the Land of the Tarahumara,” Brazil’s “Berg’s Books”and Spain’s “Upiro” proved top winners at a Ventana Sur prize ceremony which in its very form stressed just how much the biggest film-tv market in Latin America has expanded.
Prior to the pandemic, prize winners were allowed acceptance speeches. This year, with more awards than ever to doll out, recipients just got to pose for a photo. Prizes – mostly in kind from service companies or invitations to festivals, markets and other awards ceremonies – ranged widely. Some winners and awards stood out, however.
There was large curiosity, for instance, to see which series would receive the first ever Netflix Award at Ventana Sur, an Incentive for Argentine Women Creators. The cash endowment for further development went to “Ayelén and the Forest Shadow.” A...

Brazilian Gregorio Graziosi’s “Tinnitus” is co-written by Andrés Julian Vera and Marco Dutra, a Locarno best director winner for “Good Manners”; its Dp is Rui Poças, whose credits include Lucrecia Martel’s “Zama” and upcoming “Tabu.”
Its score is from David Boulter, who played keyboard on Claire Denis’ “Bastards,” collaborated on the score of her “High Life.”
Such credentials will make, almost inevitably, for one of the most polished of entries at Copia Final, Ventana Sur’s pix-in-post competition, where it screens on-site at the Cinemark Puerto Madero on Wednesday.
Developed at the Cannes Festival’s Résidence, “Tinnitus” looks set to weigh in as high art in the service of what on paper may seem a classic sports comeback narrative involving Marina, a high-board synchronized diver, who suffers a serious diving accident caused by tinnitus. She is encouraged by her substitute Teresa, she stages a comeback, though still terrorized...

New films from Oscar laureate Vanessa Ragone (“The Secret in Their Eyes”) and Camera d’Or winners Edher Campos (“Leap Year”) and Juan Pablo Miller (“Las Acacias”) are among attractions at this year’s Ventana Sur’s Primer Corte and Copia Final, the pix-in-post industry centerpieces at Latin America’s biggest film-tv market.
Ragone co-produces “The Face of the Jellyfish,” from Argentina’s Rotterdam-prized Melisa Liebenthal. Campos unveils “Journey to the Land of the Tarahumara,” Mexican Federico Cecchetti’s follow-up to the multi-prized “Mara’akame’s Dream.”
Miller introduces “Sublime,” one of the section’s buzz titles, along with “Diogenes,” from Peru’s Leonardo Barbuy, and two titles from Brazil: Gregorio Graziosi’s “Tinnitus” and Gabriel Martin’s “Mars One,” winner of Ventana Sur’s prestigious Paradiso Wip Award.
Titles brim with talent, observes Eva Morsch-Kihn, curator of Primer Corte and Copia Final along with Mercedes Abarca and Maria Nuñez.

Stuart A. Staples has been making music as part of Tindersticks for 25 years. The band, in a couple different incarnations, has created not only its own records, but six scores for films by Claire Denis, with a seventh to be written for the director later this year for her upcoming “High Life.” The latest proper Tindersticks LP, "The Waiting Room", acts in a way as a bridge between the band’s music and the world of cinema. The record is accompanied by a set of 11 short films, one for each song, from filmmakers including Denis, Christoph Girardet, Pierre Vinour, Rosie Pedlow and Joe King, Gregorio Graziosi, Richard Dumas and Gabriel Sanna. If you’ve listened to a lot of Tindersticks — or seen almost any Claire Denis movie — you might agree that few contemporary bands so deserve a visual album. Marked by enigmatic lyrics, opulent production, and weighty arrangements, their songs create vivid images of longing, pain, and atmosphere — like a series of unrequited romances playing out inside the most densely populated and well-lit French café. Needless to say, their new album, The Waiting Room, caught my attention for taking just that approach.
Ahead of an official release on January 22, Tindersticks have debuted their album and full, 51-minute video project on NPR. Several international artists (including Denis and frontman Stuart A. Staples) have directing credits, each operating under the rule that their works “should attempt not to describe the music, but to create a visual counter-point, a space for the music to inhabit.” What emerges — contrary to the way I often envision...

For cinephiles, English band Tindersticks are perhaps best known for the soundtracks they've composed for the films of Claire Denis, while music fans have been taken by the group's distinctive arrangements and intimate emotion. Next year, Tindersticks will release their tenth album, The Waiting Room, and it finds them taking another ambitious step. The upcoming long player will not only feature guest appearances by Jehnny Beth of Savages and the late, beloved singer Lhasa De Sela, it will also find the band collaborating with filmmakers. Each track on The Waiting Room will be accompanied by a music video helmed by such figures as Christoph Girardet, Pierre Vinour, Claire Denis, Gregorio Graziosi, and Gabriel Sanna. And today, we're excited to unveil "Hey Lucinda," featuring the vocals of Lhasa De Sela, and directed Rosie Pedlow and Joe King. The beautiful video finds the camera lingering down a row of shops and storefronts,...

Highlights of the main competitive strand that showcases top new Brazilian cinema.
The heart of Rio International Film Festival (Sept 24 - Oct 8) has always been the Première Brasil programme, that has kicked off today at the Cinepolis Lagoon.
One of the most prestigious sections of the festival and the main competitive one, Première Brasil has served as the leading local showcase of contemporary Brazilian cinema for the last 16 years.
Over 40 features and documentaries will be screened until October 8, when the jury awards will be presented. The programme often anticipates what will be seen in terms of Brazilian cinema in the international film festivals to come. The most striking example was Elite Squad, which opened Rio in 2007, winning the Golden Bear in Berlin the following year.
This edition includes the latest work from established veterans, such as Murilo Salles, who will present Means to An End, alongside promising new talents, such as Gregorio Graziosi and Daniel Aragão.

Every afternoon Noelí, a young Dominican girl, goes to the beaches at Las Terrenas. Along with her boyfriend, they look for ways to make a living at the expense of one of the hundreds of tourists that wander the beach.
As people parade through her life, Noelí has a steady client, Anne, a mature French woman who, as time goes by, has found an ideal refuge on the island to spend her last years.
Noelí’s boyfriend feigns to be her brother and outlines a plan in which Noelí travels to Paris with the old lady and sends him money every month.
For Noelí, the relationship with the old lady is one of convenience, but the feelings become more intense as the departure date closes in.
"Obra", by Gregorio Graziosi

During the day Ras is a construction worker. At night after work he tags the walls of his neighborhood east of Cali. Ras can’t sleep and is constantly daydreaming. His mother, Maria, a sweet woman who migrated to the city from the jungle on the Pacific side of Colombia, worries that her son has been bewitched and will end up insane.
One day Ras is fired from his job for stealing several cans of paint, which he is using to create a huge mural on the lot next to his house. Without a dime to help his mother, he searches the city for his best friend Calvin, another young graffiti artist, who studies fine arts but is having difficulty since his parents’ divorce and his grandmother’s recurring cancer.
Like a couple of mushrooms, Ras and Calvin will sprout and wander aimlessly through the city on a journey of no return, infecting the world around them with immense freedom and hope.

More about FiGa Films:
FiGa Films is an international sales agency, production, and distribution company established in 2006. Our initial focus was to acquire the best of the "new" Latin American cinema. It still is. We have since expanded to include works from North America, Europe, and Africa. Our library, now consisting of over 60 films, runs the gamut of styles and themes by established, as well as up-and-coming, filmmakers.
We treat every project, big or small, with the same passion and commitment as the filmmakers. We start early, from placing the film in the right festival, to its ultimate sale and release in major territories around the world. Whether it’s theatrical, TV, online, museums or universities, our goal is to make sure the largest audience possible gets to see these amazing films. We are proud of our reputation for launching careers and finding exciting and bold works of art to an appreciative audience.
