David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

Kate Hudson is set to star in Mindy Kaling’s upcoming Netflix comedy series set in the front office of a professional basketball team, Variety has learned.
The untitled series was ordered straight-to-series at Netflix in June 2021. The streamer has given the series a 10 episode order.
The official logline states, “When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Hudson) is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Hudson is best known for her film work, though she has been in multiple television shows during her career. Most recently, she starred in the second season of the Apple TV+ drama series “Truth Be Told.

“Modern Family” has landed a cable run at Warner Bros. Discovery’s TBS network starting Sept. 25.
The ABC sitcom, which ran for 11 total seasons from 2009 to 2020, will air on TBS for a three-hour block on weekdays — specifically from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on weekdays. The licensing by the cable outlet marks an attempt to bolster its comedy options.
Previously, “Friends” and “Young Sheldon” have occupied the hours that “Modern Family” will run. Both shows will remain on the network. Monday saw longer daily marathons of “The Big Bang Theory” on TBS.
“Our audience continually seeks out popular comedies like ‘Friends,’ ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Modern Family,’ so now that we have all three of these iconic series on TBS, we can build an even bigger, more engaged audience,” said Julie Taylor, chief of Content Strategy & Insights, US Networks Group, Warner Bros. Netflix has canceled four of its original comedy series but will proceed to develop other projects with three of the shows’ stars and creators.
A spokesperson for the streaming giant confirmed Friday that “Mr. Iglesias,” “The Crew,” “Country Comfort” and “Bonding” will not be returning.
Kevin James vehicle “The Crew,” and “Country Comfort,” starring Katherine McPhee and Eddie Cibrian, are both ending after one season. “Bonding,” created and directed by Rightor Doyle, is concluding after two seasons and “Mr. Iglesias,” toplined by Gabriel Iglesias will end with part three.
However, just because Netflix is discontinuing these series, it doesn’t mean they’re parting ways with the talent involved.
The streamer says they’ve closed a development deal with James to develop a single cam comedy series for him to produce and star in. They will also continue business with Iglesias, with the third in a series of stand-up specials slated to shoot this summer.

Netflix has ordered a comedy series inspired by the Los Angeles Lakers front office, with the NBA team’s president, Jeanie Buss, on board as a producer.
The untitled series — which is produced by Mindy Kaling, with Elaine Ko as showrunner — is loosely based on the inner workings of the popular franchise, which has been owned by the Buss family since 1979. It follows Eliza Reed, the governor of a fictional team, as she navigates NBA ownership and family drama with her best friend by her side.
The Netflix project is one of three TV series based on the popular Lakers franchise, which is tied with the Boston Celtics for the most NBA championships with 17 each.
HBO has its own untitled drama from Adam McKay about the “Showtime” era in the 1980s. Based on Jeff Pearlman’s book, the series does not have the involvement of anyone attached to the Lakers.

Updated with launch taking effect. Modern Family, which wrapped its highly decorated, 11-season network run last year, is embarking on a significant new streaming chapter via a shared deal with Peacock and Hulu.
Starting today, all 250 episodes of the Emmy-laden sitcom are available on both services after years of only having a limited batch of episodes on Hulu.
Indications from the deal announcement on January 26 are that the go-go streaming market remains in full effect. Sources familiar with the terms said the multi-year acquisition price stretched well into nine figures, consistent with healthy rates for recent half-hours such as Friends, The Office and Seinfeld. Prices have been driven steadily higher by the entry of several new billion-dollar players into the streaming fray in the past year.

ABC is not going to let its comedy hit Modern Family go quietly as the long-running series enters its 11th and final season.
ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke admitted to Deadline on Monday that the current storyline of Hayley Dunphy, played by Sarah Hyland, and her newborn baby with her on-again-off-again boyfriend Dylan, played by Reid Ewing, seems tailor-made for a spinoff.
Modern Family, which also stars Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould and Rico Rodriguez, just launched production on the final season and co-creator/exec producer Steve Levitan said they “plan on finishing strong.”
Burke admitted that Levitan doesn’t yet want to discuss spinoffs. “I get smacked down every time I bring it up to Steve Levitan, so I’m going to stay quiet for a little while,” she said. “They’ve just started production on the final season...

It’s official — ABC’s flagship comedy series Modern Family will wrap its run after one more season. The Emmy-winning family comedy has been picked up for an eleventh and final season, the network announced at TCA. I hear it will consist of at least 18 episodes and could expand to 22 episodes.
Modern Family’s renewal was all but assured when the original adult cast, stars Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara, in December agreed on new deals with producing studio 20th Century Fox TV to return. Since then, the studio also has signed co-creators/executive producers Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd for another season, and also has made new deals with the original kid actors — now all young adults — Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould and Rico Rodriguez. I hear some of those cast negotiations came down to the wire, with pacts finally closing overnight.

ABC has set an end date for “Modern Family,” renewing the sitcom for an 11th and final season.
The announcement was made by ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke on Tuesday at the Television Critics Association press tour.
“Chris and Steve have created one of the most seminal and iconic comedies in television history,” Burke said. “In its final season, there will be more milestone events that anyone who has been a fan of the series won’t want to miss.”

During its run, “Modern Family” was among the most-nominated comedy series, winning a total of 22 Emmys, including five straight years for Outstanding Comedy Series (2010-2014). “Even after 10 years together, we realized there are still some things our writers don’t yet know about each other’s sex lives,” co-creator and executive producer Steve Levitan said.

Mitch and Cam will be singing a chorus of “Ew, David!” on Modern Family this fall when Schitt’s Creek‘s Daniel Levy drops by for a troublemaking guest appearance.
In Season 10’s third episode, Levy will play Jonah, a courtroom sketch artist who draws Mitch and Cam in a very unflattering manner. When they confront him, we learn that Jonah’s bitter about a past slight and is out for revenge.
The episode, titled “A Sketchy Idea” and penned by Elaine Ko, is currently in production.
Modern Family‘s 10th season is set to bow Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 9/8c on ABC.

It’s easy to take “Modern Family” for granted now.
That’s actually a tribute to how much the comedy has become engrained in the fabric of television comedy. Don’t forget, “Modern Family” broke new ground in 2009 with its depiction of a diverse, multi-generational family and its relatable stories of what it’s like to interact with your relatives in the 21st century.
And the show continues to experiment with special episodes. For the upcoming Season 9 opener, the entire episode will take place in Lake Tahoe, on a houseboat. The “Modern Family” cast is set to shoot the episode (inspired by family trips co-creator Steve Levitan took as a kid) later this month in Tahoe.
Among other recent memorable episodes, two years ago, “Connection Lost” was shot entirely via social networking platforms like FaceTime, and this past season, the episode “Five Minutes” focused on several story vignettes, shot in real time.

Two films forgotten by the Academy, the animated adventure "The Lego Movie" and the Roger Ebert Documentary "Life Itself," triumphed at the recently concluded 2015 Producers Guild Awards.
"The Lego Movie" took home the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for producer Dan Lin while "Life Itself" won the Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures for producers Garrett Basch, Steve James, and Zak Piper.

Nearly 11 months after he picked up the Adapted Screenplay Oscar for 12 Years A Slave, John Ridley and his script won the Humanitas Prize for Feature Film today. Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash script, which scored an Oscar nom yesterday, took the award in the Sundance Feature Film category. The 40th annual awards, which honor films and TV shows that “entertain, engage and enrich the viewing public,” were handed out during a luncheon at the Beverly Wilshire.
On the small-screen side, Humanitas Prizes went to Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart, Alex Gansa & Meredith Stiehm for the Season 3 Homeland finale “The Star” and Elaine Ko for the Season 5 Modern Family episode “Under Pressure.” “We are so proud and honored to add this year’s Humanitas Prize winners to the long list of writers whose work has both entertained and inspired us for the past four decades,” said Humanitas Executive Director Cathleen Young said.

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

Oscar Race Up in the Air? Space Thriller and Slave Drama in First-Ever Tie at Producers Guild Awards
Producers Guild of America Awards 2014: ‘Gravity’ and ’12 Years a Slave’ tie for Best Picture (photo: ‘Gravity’) Earlier this evening, January 19, 2014, the Alfonso Cuarón-directed Gravity and the Steve McQueen-directed 12 Years a Slave shared the Producers Guild of America’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures — in other words, the PGA’s Best Picture Award. That’s the first such tie in the PGA Awards’ 24-year history. A mix of adventure thriller and mother-love soap opera, Gravity was written by Alfonso Cuarón and his son, Jonás Cuarón. The Cuaróns’ film received ten Academy Award nominations, but failed to be shortlisted for its screenplay. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star. Based on the story of a free black man forced into slavery in the mid-19th century United States, 12 Years a Slave stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt (who also co-produced the film), and...

After your series wins four consecutive Best Comedy Emmys, it is bound to get some backlash. One of the most egregious criticisms of Modern Family was how the writers often wrapped up the episodes in a sweet, sentimental bow with gooey truisms about family values and being together. The writers responded to these critic assessments and now use a concluding, feel-good voice-over monologue more sparingly. However, the cutting criticism missed one of the elements of the Emmy-winning comedy that makes it so special. The room that Modern Family saves for tender moments show how frequently a dramatically satisfying and deeply moving television series it really is.
The key to making this episode work is Ariel Winter, the young actor who plays Alex Dunphy. Being the most introverted character in a zany ensemble comedy has, historically, made it hard to really appreciate Alex. Beyond her incessant need to study and be a straight-a student,...

ABC‘s Emmy-winning comedy will film its next vacation episode in Australia. Written by Danny Zuker and Elaine Ko and directed by Modern Family co-creator Steven Levitan, the episode will feature the show’s entire cast sans Jay and Gloria’s baby boy. The show will film in Sydney, in the Blue Mountains and hopefully at the Great Barrier Reef with the cooperation of Australian airline Qantas. Here is what Levitan had to say about next month’s stint: We are so excited about our trip down under and we promise not to do any ‘down under’ jokes. We look forward to a fantastic shoot in many exotic locations. We loved the family vacation episodes we shot in Hawaii and Wyoming – this one is certainly our most ambitious yet. We promise to feature a kangaroo, a koala and a boomerang. I’m sure there will be lots more, but so...

Plenty of groups give out awards for excellence in film and television at the end of every year, but no set of nominations is watched more carefully by Oscar predictors than the picks from the Producers Guild. That’s because year after year their choices end up being a fairly good indicator of which films will also be granted Best Picture nominations when the Academy makes their selections.
The Guild has announced their 2014 nominations today and there aren’t really any major surprises here. All the expected films are present, including 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Her and The Wolf Of Wall Street. Animated films that nabbed nominations are The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Epic, Frozen and Monsters University. Included in the documentary nominations are A Place at the Table, Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story, Life According to Sam, We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks...

The Producers Guild of America has accurately forecast the last six Best Picture Oscar winners, so it was good news for 10 films that were nominated today for the PGA’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award. While Gravity, 12 Years a Slave, and American Hustle were among the films that made the cut, Inside Llewyn Davis, The Butler, and Fruitvale Station did not. Last year, eight of the 10 movies that received nods from the PGA went on to earn Oscar nominations for Best Picture.

Netflix's critical hit "Orange Is the New Black" picked up four nominations for the 2014 Writers Guild Awards -- where it's entered as a comedy series.
The show (and its cast) is entered in the drama field for some other upcoming awards shows, including the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. It's a bit of a tweener show, mixing both comedy and drama, but as there are no "dramedy" awards anywhere, it's a comedy for writing purposes.
Other multiple nominees for the WGA Awards include "Breaking Bad," "Modern Family," "30 Rock," "Masters of Sex," "The Simpsons" and another Netflix series, "House of Cards."
The full list of series nominees is below. You can go here to see all the WGA TV and radio nominees, including those for news and children's programming. The awards are scheduled for Feb. 1.
