Nobody was expecting it, but it’s true: two-time Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal – who earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her performance in the 2010 film Crazy Heart and a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for writing her 2021 feature directorial debut The Lost Daughter – is writing and directing a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). The Bride! is currently making its way through production and unveiling images that are intriguing, even if there are jarring elements to them. So we thought this was a good time to put together a list of Everything We Know About The Bride!
Studio And Release Date
The Bride! is not set up at Universal Pictures, so this isn’t an official remake of The Bride of Frankenstein, it’s a play on the same concepts found in Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein that inspired the 1935 film.

Demi Moore just added another glamorous outing to her Cannes itinerary.
The actress is set to serve as the godmother of the Trophée Chopard ceremony for the luxe jeweler at the Carlton Beach Club on May 17. Created in 2001 by Chopard’s co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele, the Trophée Chopard is given annually during the festival “to an actress or actor at the start of their career” as a way to promote the big screen’s next generation and underscore Chopard’s commitment to cinema.
Previous recipients of the honor include Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux, Diane Kruger, Niels Schneider, Florence Pugh and Jessie Buckley. Last year, Natalie Portman served in the godmother role and handed trophies to honorees Naomi Ackie and Daryl McCormack. The ceremony is typically an A-list affair as it’s an official dinner of the festival and is a joint invitation of fest president Iris Knobloch, Cannes veteran Thierry Frémaux and Scheufele.

Men is a heavy, yet not subtle, film focusing on the horrors of the patriarchy in society—one that has plenty of meaning to make out of its open-ended plot.
The film, directed by Civil War Director Alex Garland, follows Jessie Buckley’s Harper Marlow, who is looking for a place to heal after some recent trauma.
The house she chooses to rent looks like the perfect place—that is, until it, and the whole town, becomes subject to some seriously disturbing inhabitants.

April began with showers, plus a tiny regional earthquake on the East Coast, but that didn’t keep anyone away from theaters, even if it was a slower weekend than much of March. Read on for the weekend box office report.
There was little surprise that Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” would win its second weekend at #1. Sony Pictures Classics’ Wicked Little Letters grossed an estimated $1.5+ million in a big second week expansion for the R-rated British period comedy to 1,000 screens from five. The Thea Sharrock-directed film starring Olivia Colman (also a producer) and Jessie Buckley, no. 8 at the domestic weekend box office, has a $1.6+ million cume.
Colman and Buckley have been out actively promoting the film, based on an actual scandal, about a police investigation into the anonymous author of crude letters sent to the residents of a British seaside town.
The number is on the high end of SPC’s expectations, and the Sunday estimate may be conservative.
Audiences for Wicked Little Letters are 60% female, 40% male, with a range of women age 30-plus, unusual for a period film as they skew older. It’s playing especially well in major cities and college towns but also popping in smaller markets like Seattle. Word of mouths is terrific,...

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire easily took the top spot this weekend at the box office, posting a much stronger-than-expected $31.7 million second weekend. We predicted about $25 million, so this is a significantly more extensive haul than expected for the MonsterVerse sequel, with it falling about 60% in week 2. That’s decent for a tentpole blockbuster like this. Everyone assumed the movie would be front-loaded, but that doesn’t seem to be the case, with it now on its way to at least a $200 million domestic haul – maybe more.
However, Godzilla and Kong’s good fortune at the multiplex spelled doom for two new genre titles – Monkey Man and The First Omen, both of which were gunning for some of that movie’s audience. Of the two, Monkey Man’s $10.1 million haul isn’t half bad if you consider that Universal picked it up for only about $10 million after Netflix opted to dump it.

Although some may find the new mystery Wicked Little Letters a bit lax in actual mystery, an incredibly strong cast, led by Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley manages to elevate the film to a wickedly clever piece that makes up for its shortcomings with unabashed enthusiasm and excitement.
Based on an allegedly true story, Wicked Little Letters tells the tale of two women: Edith Swan (Colman) and Rose Gooding (Buckley) who, after Rose is accused of sending Edith and several of the town’s residents several profane letters, set about investigating the crime themselves to prove that Rose is innocent.
Director Thea Sharrock – whose previous feature work includes The One and Only Ivan (2020) and Me Before You (2016) – works from a script that was penned by Jonny Sweet, an actor who has also written scripts for several episodes of the television programs Gap Year (2017), Together (2015), and Chickens (2011). Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker – which was pulled from TIFF in 2022 over “rights issues” — starts a theatrical debut today at the IFC Center, moving to LA’s Landmark’s Nuart next weekend and expanding thereafter with about 85 booking so far — a nice outcome for the mixed-media coming-of-age dark superhero parody that “had gone into into hibernation mode” until Outfest LA Film Festival, said Frank Jaffe, whose distribution company Altered Innocence acquired it then. It’s U.S premiere garnered a Special Mention in the North American Narrative Feature Competition.
Co-written by Drew and Bri LeRose, the film is a reimagining the origin story of iconic Batman villain The Joker, starring Drew as painfully unfunny aspiring clown and closeted trans girl grappling with her gender identity while unsuccessfully attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City’s sole comedy program, in a world where comedy has been outlawed. Wicked Little Letters is one of those truth-stranger-than-fiction tales that remind us that people are weirder than we might think. Director Thea Sharrock opens her comedy/mystery tale with text informing us “more of this is true than you might think,” a comic mystery about on the sudden appearance of anonymous obscene letters sent to various residents of a quiet of early 1920s little British seaside town. The first victim is Edith Swan (Olivia Colman), prim and proper religious spinster who still lives with her parents, and who embodies the last-gasp of the Victorian era ideal of a quiet obedient woman against those uppity women demanding the vote. Suspicion quickly falls on Edith’s neighbor, a foul-mouthed new arrival from Ireland, Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley), who has a daughter Nancy (Alisha Weir), and...

Christian Bale is probably the most diligent actor Hollywood has. Bale’s commitment to the craft is unparalleled. He has quite the reputation of going above and beyond to do justice to the characters he plays. With extreme physical transformations and voice modulations, Bale plays his characters like he’s grown new skin.

Mary Shelley's genre novel landmark Frankenstein is one source material that, like Sherlock Holmes, Dracula or Garfield, filmmakers just can't somehow stay away from. Perhaps it's because the story of a man and his creation offers so many potential thematic choices. Or because actors just love playing the stitched-up result of the doctor's work. In this case, we have writer/director Maggie Gyllenhaal offering up the first looks at Christian Bale as the creature and Jessie Buckley as his chosen Bride. Check out Bale above and the other images below…
From the looks of these, Gyllenhaal (marking her second directorial effort after the Oscar-nominated The Lost Daughter) has certainly put a new spin on the classic story (or more accurately The Bride Of Frankenstein).
Your official synopsis runs as follows: A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphonious in creating a companion for himself.

Coleman is Edith, a mousey British woman who lives with her parents and espouses Christian values as her facade. Her neighborhood is disrupted when a saucy war widow named Rose (Jessie Buckley) moves in with a daughter and lover, and espouses a filterless and authentic cussing-like-a-sailor persona. When Rose begins to charm the neighborhood, it coincides with a number of poison pen letters Edith begins to receive, using swear-word language similar to the rhythms of Rose’s speech. Edith’s Dad Edward (Timothy Spall) has Rose arrested, and everyone assumes her guilt except for a handful of neighbors and a woman police officer named Gladys (Anjana Vasan). Bale and Buckley star in the pic alongside Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard. The film’s logline reads: A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.
The movie is being produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Gyllenhaal, Talia Kleinhendler (The Lost Daughter), and Osnat Handelsman-Keren (The Lost Daughter). EPs are Courtney Kivowitz (The Lost Daughter) and Carla Raij.
The pic will mark Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort following The Lost Daughter, her screen adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, starring Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, and Jessie Buckley. The film was nominated for three Oscars: Best Actress (Colman), Best Supporting Actress (Buckley), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Gyllenhaal).
The Bride is currently slated for release in IMAX on October 3, 2025. The pic is just the first Frankenstein adaptation audiences can expect on the big screen soon. Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has a Frankenstein feature set at Netflix with Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, and Christian Convery signed on to star.

Our first official look at one of the most anticipated horror movies currently in the works, a new spin on Frankenstein's monster titled "The Bride!", has finally arrived ... and it's nothing like what we were expecting.
Actor/director Maggie Gyllenhaal has long been rumored to be taking a stab at the classic Universal monster(s) and, after the widespread acclaim of 2021's "The Lost Daughter", we most recently had word that the filmmaker had assembled quite an A-list cast of talent for the production. In addition to Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard in various supporting roles, none other than Christian Bale will star as Frankenstein's monster while Buckley reunites with her "The Lost Daughter" director to portray the eponymous Bride. This morning, we got our first look at Bale and Buckley as the monstrous duo and, well, believe us when we say you'll probably need to see it to believe it.

Easter is behind us, we’re into a new month, and we’re fully into spring … and yet, the box office might be hitting another lull. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
There aren’t many scenarios where “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” doesn’t win its second weekend at #1. Even with a steep drop from its Easter opening, it should still be able to bring in another $30 million this coming weekend, which will be hard to beat.
It might be a coin flip on which of the other two new wide releases might do better, but I have to give a slight edge to “The First Omen,” 20th Century’s prequel to a horror franchise that began all the way back in 1976 with the horror film, “The Omen,” directed by Richard Donner pre-“Superman.” That led to two sequels in 1978 and 1981, even though the original...

Actress Anjana Vasan spoke about her role in the new film Wicked Little Letters.
Wicked Little Letters, set in a 1920s English seaside town, is a mystery-comedy that follows two neighboring characters: the deeply conservative local Edith Swan (played by Olivia Colman), and the lively Irish immigrant Rose Gooding (portrayed by Jessie Buckley). The tranquil town is thrown into disarray when its residents are bombarded with letters filled with cruel and unintentionally hilarious profanities. The outspoken Rose is blamed for the scandalous correspondence and a national trial results from the uproar caused by the anonymous letters. However, as the town’s women take matters into their own hands, led by the determined Police Officer Gladys Moss (played by Vasan), they begin to question Rose’s culpability, and find a deeper mystery beneath the surface.
Vasan’s character faces challenges in her job as a policewoman in a male-dominated field.

IFC Films’ Late Night With The Devil topped the specialty market in its second week, as a Tollywood and a Bollywood film both made the top ten in a rare occurrence. Strong horror and Indian fare have helped buoy the box office since Covid. They continue to fill in the top ten, including this week, which boasts a monstrous hit in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire — but is a neighborhood with fewer overall wide release due to Hollywood strikes.
Scary first: Late Night With The Devil by Australian duo Colin and Cameron Cairnes stars David Dastmalchian, perfection as a late 1970s talk show host whose quest for ratings on a Halloween night broadcast goes nowhere good, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms. It grossed $2.2 million on 1,442 screens in week two, for a cume of $6.2 million. The film is in the top ten again, at no. 7.
