Focus Features’ “The Holdovers” is one of the sweetest movies of the year and is set to become a new Christmas classic. Written by David Hemingson and directed by Alexander Payne, the 1970s-set story follows Paul Giamatti as a school professor tasked with staying behind on campus to look after students not going home for Christmas. What follows is a charming, touching tale about two foes who learn to become friends. Giamatti gives a knockout performance while Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a hot contender for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a cook mourning the death of her son. The movie’s strongest point, however, is its writing.
“Whiskey Cavalier” creator and “Black-Ish” and “American Dad!” scribe David Hemingson crafted the script. He has never been nominated for an Oscar before but we expect that that he’ll win one this year. We’re predicting he will take home...

Alexander Payne‘s movies often fare well in the writing categories at the Oscars with four of his films so far nominated for either Best Original Screenplay or Best Adapted Screenplay.
His second movie, “Election,” was nominated for only Adapted Screenplay in 2000 after it turned Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel of the same name into a film. Payne was nominated with his writing partner Jim Taylor, although they lost to John Irving for “The Cider House Rules.” “Sideways” then picked up five nominations in 2005 including an Adapted Screenplay bid for Payne and Taylor after they turned Rex Pickett’s 2004 novel of the same name into a hit movie. Payne and Taylor won this time around.
In 2012, “The Descendants” repeated the record of “Sideways,” matching five nominations and one Adapted Screenplay victory. This time, Payne won alongside Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. They adapted the 2007 novel of the same name from Kaui Hart Hemmings.

Exclusive: Academy Award winner Jim Rash (Bros) has signed on to star alongside Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in Project Artemis — the high-profile Apple Original, to be directed by Greg Berlanti.
Specifics as to the film’s plot have thus far been kept under wraps, though we hear that it will be set against the space race of the 1960s.
While unconfirmed, sources say that Rash will play Lance, a fashionable, chic commercial director. Flamboyant and determined to create art, Lance is known for constantly going over budget on set, being incredibly opinionated and is perpetually un-hirable.

Jason Reitman's film career has taken a bit of a dip as of late with the lackluster success of Labor Day and the outright bomb that is Men, Women & Children, of which he's spent the majority of the film's promotional tour shouting, "It's not about the Internet!" So, what's nextc Well, first off will be a stop at Hulu where the digital streaming service has announced a straight to series order for "Casual", a ten episode, single-camera, half-hour comedy series that follows the story of a dysfunctional family with a bachelor brother and his newly divorced sister. Together, they coach each other through the crazy world of dating (on-line and off), while living under one roof again and raising a teenager. Reitman will executive produce and direct the premiere episode, along with writer Zander Lehmann and Reitman's production partner Helen Estabrook (Whiplash, Young Adult). Now if this was 10-...

The start of the year is usually a slow month for movies, as such brilliant cinematic masterpieces like I, Frankenstein and Ride Along are currently attesting to. Book publications don’t normally follow seasons, though, and so you’re always likely to find a great read from a great author that’s just hit the shelves. So many fresh names and new entries from established writers can be daunting – before you go stand agape at the New Arrival shelf at Waterstone’s, take a look at some of the most anticipated reads of 2014.
There are exciting new novels from masters like Joyce Carol Oates and Haruki Murakami and promising sophomore efforts from relative newcomers Teju Cole and Kaui Hart Hemmings. Short story collections, true-crime narratives, biographies and memoirs – 2014 promises to be an exciting year, even when the offerings at the cinema are a bit dull. Though he is currently in the process of filming a movie, Oscar-nominated writer/director Jason Reitman is apparently wasting no time in finding his next project. He currently is attached to adapt The Possibilities, the upcoming second novel from Kaui Hart Hemmings, whose 2011 debut The Descendants was turned into the awards-friendly drama from Alexander Payne. Darkly comedic drama is something Reitman has a knack for, and this sounds like it could be in the same vein, albeit with more mourning involved. The Possibilities, which won.t be coming out until May 13 from Simon & Schuster, takes place in the ski resort town of Breckinridge, Colorado, the site of an avalanche that killed 21-year-old Cully St. John. Three months later, his mother Sarah is still understandably unable to move on with her life, with advice coming from friends and family. Just when the bulk of the emotional weight is starting to rise,...

If you’re a fan of smaller dramas, you have a good reason to be excited here. The forces behind recent gems like The Descendants and Up In The Air are teaming up. And no, George Clooney will not be involved (at least as of now). The writer of the book that The Descendants was based on, Kaui Hart Hemmings, has had her next novel optioned by Jason Reitman (Up In The Air, Juno, Thank You For Smoking), to be turned into a feature film.
The book, entitled The Possibilities, is about a grieving mother that recently lost her son. As she struggles to cope with her loss, she’s visited by a girl with a life-changing secret. The setting is a Colorado ski town.
Jason Reitman, son of Ivan (he of Ghostbusters fame), is currently working on Men, Women & Children, which will star Emma Thompson, Adam Sandler, and Jennifer Garner.

Yet another project lined up for Jason Reitman, who has seemingly regained his mojo most recently after directing and premiering Labor Day with Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin. Indian Paintbrush and Reitman's Right of Way Films have optioned the rights to adapt Kaui Hart Hemmings' next book, titled The Possibilities, and Jason is attached to direct so far. Hemmings is the author behind The Descendants, a novel adapted by Alexander Payne that won a Best Screenplay Oscar. It’s been no secret and filmmaker Jason Reitman's has never been shy about the fact that his movies are heavily indebted to the films of Alexander Payne. They both have a very particular humanist tone and often a quietly, deadpan one at that. Reitman put on a double feature of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and Payne’s “Election” back in 2010 at Los Angeles’ New Beverly theater in tribute to the films (Reitman sees “Election” as a sort of unofficial sequel to ‘Ferris Bueller’) and he’s gone on the record often about Payne’s influence. So it’s perhaps no surprise that Reitman is following Payne’s lead again. The elder filmmaker had tons of success in 2011 with his adaptation of Kaui Hart Hemmings’ “The Descendants” (5 Oscar nominations including Best Picture) and now Reitman’s company Right of Way Films has optioned her latest book, "The Possibilities.

The Grey; Haywire; The Descendants
From the outside, The Grey (2011, Entertainment, 15) looks like just another tired riff on the dreary "man v (his own) nature" theme that in the not too distant past gave us the ponderous tedium of the David Mamet-scripted The Edge. In that self-important dirge-fest, an air crash left Alec Baldwin and (Sir!) Anthony Hopkins to sort out their manly differences in the North American wilds while being pursued by a clumsily symbolic bear. The Grey similarly ditches its mismatched airborne characters into an inhospitably freezing landscape where their interpersonal conflicts will be played out against a background of baying – and occasionally attacking – wolves.
Liam Neeson, who has recently morphed from admired thespian to existential action hero, plays the lone wolf-hunter, a marksman who understands the call of the wild: Le Samourai in snowboots, with a hint of Jim Jarmusch's underrated Dead Man thrown in for good measure.

George Clooney begins the family drama The Descendants by enumerating the many ways that life in Hawaii isn't the paradise that us folks on the mainland might presume it to be. Intercut with images of the homeless and the miserable in the streets of the island state, set to ukelele music, that defensive position for the drama that's about to follow almost seems to be director and co-screenwriter Alexander Payne (adapting a novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings) preemptively warning us, the viewers, that for real, we should really, really be concerned about the lives of these monied, sad white people in Hawaii. And whether by design or by accident, this might leave you completely unprepared for the smart, funny, and often "true" story at the...

It used to be, Tom Hanks was the everyman who took us into one film after another, giving us a chance to experience the mundane to the fantastic. That role in many ways has been ceded to George Clooney, who displays in one film after another, a charismatic vulnerability that makes you root for him regardless of the circumstances. He brings that empathy to Matt King, the lead figure in The Descendants, out this week from 20th Century Home Entertainment.
Yeah, we all now he was nominated for Best Actor but if you haven’t seen the film; you can watch the video and see the actor lose himself in the character. King is married, with two teen children, and has his world rocked, first by the wife Elizabeth (Patricia Hastie) getting sick and then learning she has been having an affair. Despite multimillion-dollar budgets, a big-screen adaptation of a popular book may not result in untold riches for its original author
Penniless novelists may not weep for Susan Hill. The author of The Woman in Black claims she is "broke" despite the Daniel Radcliffe-led adaptation of her 1983 novel taking more than $US50m in the Us and £20m in the UK. Hill's stage play of the same story has run in the West End for 23 years and the 69-year-old author of acclaimed novels such as A Bit of Singing and Dancing lives on a 50-acre farm in Gloucestershire and even has her own publishing imprint.
But she has a good point. "Films always make everyone else rich save the author," she tweeted to one of her followers. "Film accounting", she told another, is "very weird".

Actress Shailene Woodley doesn't think "The Descendants," the film that earned her a Golden Globe nomination and an Independent Spirit Award, has changed the course of her career.
"I've always said I'll never do something just because I'm supposed to ride the wave," she says. "For me, it's about doing projects that feed my soul. It's about creating art."
The Oscar-nominated film, starring Woodley and George Clooney, is out Tuesday (March 13) on DVD and Blu-ray. Based on Kaui Hart Hemmings' novel, "The Descendants" tells the moving story of husband and father Matt King (Clooney), who is trying to hold his family together following his wife's death in a boating accident.
Woodley, who plays King's teenage daughter Alexandra, spent a great deal of time crying onscreen during the tearjerker of a film. So how was she able to summon the waterworks for the emotional scenes?

The Oscar-winning, George Clooney-starring film "The Descendants" is out on DVD and Blu-ray March 13, and Zap2it has an exclusive first look at one of the special features included on the disc.
The film, which follows Clooney's Matt King, a descendant of Hawaiian royalty, as he decides what to do with a large chunk of land his family inherited, was based on a short story by native Hawaiian Kaui Hart Hemmings and shot entirely in the state.
In Zap2it's sneak peek at "Hawaiian Style," learn what Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Judy Greer and the rest of the cast had to deal with while shooting in what many would consider tropical paradise. Guess what? It's not so glamorous: Wild chickens.
"The Descendants" won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

"The Descendants" author Kaui Hart Hemmings wants you to know she was just being silly when she tweeted about "The Artist" cast and crew at the Academy Awards, a tweet the Huffington Post dramatized as an "insult."
Hemmings is currently promoting the Blu-ray/DVD release of "The Descendants," the Academy Award-winning movie starring George Clooney and cowritten and directed by Alexander Payne. We talked to her on the phone last week, and aside from the Twitter gossip, Hemmings discussed her involvement during the making of the film, why it was important to have this story told from a male perspective and what people should take from her first novel.
When you were writing the book, when did you know it was finished?
You know, I don't ever think I knew it was finished. I guess it's like that with anything, you sort of feel it. I gave it to my...

Nat Faxon, Alexander Payne, Jim Rash Nat Faxon, Jim Rash, Alexander Payne: The Descendants Oscar 2012 Q&A Pt.1 Q. Alexander, I wondered if you would translate what you said in Hawaiian in that nice tribute to your mom, but also in doing that, talk about how you adapted the Hawaiian culture, especially using the music in telling the story. A. (Payne) I'm so happy to correct you. It wasn't Hawaiian, it was Greek. … Essentially that's "I love you very much" in Greek. As for, as you say, adapting Hawaiian culture and folding it into the film and using the music, thanks for the question. In retrospect I have to say, yeah, I am proud of the fact that I was able to spend a number of months in Hawaii before shooting, using Kaui Hart Hemmings, the novelist, as a guy opening the initial doors for me to get it...

It has been a helluva run for "The Descendants." The return for filmmaker Alexander Payne not only earned critical raves, but it did remarkable business at the box office taking in over $150 million worldwide. And the industry sat up and took notice too, with the film earning numerous honors on the award circuit include a Golden Globe victory for George Clooney and Spirt Award wins for the screenwriters (Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash) and newcomer Shailene Woodley. The picture also went to the Oscars where it took home a statue for Best Adapted Screenplay as well.

The author of "The Descendants," Kaui Hart Hemmings, may not be very happy that the film adaptation of her book was overlooked for Best Picture last night.
"The Artist people were in line in front of me and now I smell like cigarettes and entitlement," she tweeted before the ceremony.
Bizarre joke or candid irritation? Either way, we're sensing some bitterness.
The down-to-earth movie about loss and family was a Golden Globe darling, taking home the award for Best Motion Picture - Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama. So it came as a surprise to some that it's Oscar successes were few, especially given the Golden Globe's track record for predicting Academy Award wins.
Still, "The Artist" was far from a dark horse for Best Picture, and "The Descendants" was not without it's triumphs: Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon got the trophy for Best Adapted Screenplay.
