On any list of the best films based on World War II, The Great Escape, directed by John Sturges and based on the novel by Paul Brickhill, will always rank near the top. The compelling story of a group of British and American prisoners of war and how they outwitted their Nazi captors observes its 50th anniversary this year, and actor David McCallum, who plays Ashley-Pitt in the film, travelled to Omaha, Nebraska on November 9, 2013, to help celebrate the classic film. Proceeds went to the Nebraska Kidney Foundation, which was why McCallum took time from his busy television schedule to make an appearance. The evening event centered around a showing of the film at the large, concert-style theater at the prestigious Joslyn Museum, to an enthusiastic, full house crowd of 1000.

Last month, film historian Bruce Crawford held a special 35th anniversary screening of Jaws in Omaha, Nebraska. Among those attending were screenwriter Carl Gottlieb and Clarence Hupka, a survivor of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, the legendary and tragic ship that was sunk in the final days of WWII- only to have many of its crew killed by sharks. Cinema Retro reader and film historian Bruce Crawford gave us the head's up that he recently collaborated with Robert Osborne on a month-long tribute to composer Bernard Hermann. Films relating to the maestro will be presented every Tuesday in September on TCM. Here is a look at the schedule:

The spotlight will be hosted by Robert Osborne.

Cinema Retro has just received the following press release:
On Saturday May 30th, Bruce Crawford will host his 24th. classic film salute in Omaha Nebraska with a tribute to Omaha native Marlon Brando and a one night only showing of The Godfather on the big screen, at 7pm at the Joslyn Art Museum's Witherspoon Hall theatre, 2200 Dodge St. Omaha Ne. This will be Director Francis Ford Coppola's restoration of the film. Special guests will include Miko Brando, son of the legendary star and actor John Martino who portrayed the mobster snitch Paulie Gatto, and will share stories on the making of this film masterpiece. Artist Nicolosi will once again come in from Beverly Hills to unveil another commemorative art honoring the film. A dance troupe in the Fountain Court headed by Dan Wondra will dance to "swing time" and Big Band era music as seen in the film. Godfather's Pizza,...
