BBC Studios and German pubcaster Zdf have formed a strategic partnership to develop and co-produce “world-class content,” the two companies announced Thursday.
The new long-term partnership will bring BBC Studios, the British pubcaster’s commercial arm, and Zdf together to co-develop scripted TV series, such as “The Mallorca Files,” created by Dan Sefton. Both companies will pitch scripted projects with international appeal.
The deal also gives Zdf an exclusive first-look option in Germany to co-produce new landmark titles from BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit, such as the upcoming “One Planet, Seven Worlds,” as well as a first option on BBC Studios’ factual catalog.
Norbert Himmler, chief content officer at Zdf, said the two companies shared “the aspiration to offer the highest-quality programs across all genres.”

Broadchurch star Elen Rhys and Pagan Peak’s Julian Looman are to front BritBox and BBC drama The Mallorca Files.
The ten-part series is created by Dan Sefton, and produced by Cosmopolitan Pictures, the production company set up by Ben Donald and Misfits firm Clerkenwell Films.
It is set amongst the expat community on the sunny Spanish island and features a British and German detective clashing over their very different approaches to policing the island. While self-confessed introverted Brit Miranda Blake, played by Rhys, takes her career seriously, German Max Winter, played by Looman, is a classic extrovert and unashamedly unconventional. The two characters battle it out to solve crimes in the sun-drenched setting.
The BBC and BritBox have also revealed the directing talent for the series including Black Mirror’s Bryn Higgins, Doctor Who’s Charlie Palmer, Mr Selfridge’s Rob Evans and Lovesick’s Gordon Anderson.

After a failed first feature that practically no one saw, Welsh director Gareth Evans traveled all the way to Jakarta to jump-start his career, helming a stunning trio of whiplash-fast action movies featuring the Indonesian martial art of silat — “Merantau,” “The Raid” and “The Raid 2” — that established him as a cutting-edge choreographer of break-yo’-face beatdowns. Turns out that’s not all he can do, not by a long stretch.
Gopher-bombing whatever pigeonhole Hollywood might’ve stuck him in, Evans has found his way back to the British Isles, switching genres entirely with “Apostle,” a Gothic horror mystery that’s less like an adrenaline shot to the heart than a rusty, hand-cranked drill to the skull. Just in time for Halloween, Evans eschews his signature brand of hyper-kinetic pugilism in favor of suspenseful, long-fuse mind games, offering the growing cult of Netflix subscribers this stylishly deranged black mass, which...

"Your eyes... they've seen things. Who are you...?" Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Gareth Evans' new film Apostle, his follow-up and latest film since making The Raid and The Raid 2, and the V/H/S/2 segment. Apostle is set to premiere at Fantastic Fest, then the Sitges Film Festival over the next month before arriving on Netflix. Set in 1905, the film is about a man who travels to a remote island to rescue his sister after she’s kidnapped by a mysterious religious cult demanding a ransom for her safe return. It soon becomes clear that the cult will rue the day it baited this man, as he digs deeper and deeper into the secrets and lies upon which the commune is built. Starring Dan Stevens, Lucy Boynton, Mark Lewis Jones, Michael Sheen, Kristine Froseth, Bill Milner, Elen Rhys, and Annes Elwy. This looks super creepy and twisted, extra intense and ultra violent,...

Post-apocalyptic zombie movies are ten-a-penny these days, it often seem like we get a new one every month, thankfully The Rezort (also known as Generation Z) gives us a new spin on the familiar story… Following a near-apocalyptic zombie outbreak, humans are once again in control. If an occasional rogue zombie finds its way into everyday life, it is quickly disposed of by the authorities. In this day and age, people know how to handle “Zee’s”, so much so that it has become big business to hunt the undead.
The latest craze is the Zafari. Part blood sport, part therapeutic revenge following the losses suffered during the outbreak, the zombie safari is a chance to shoot and kill the un-dead out in the wild on an island resort.

Wilkin Brattle has trouble sleeping. A former warrior knight, Brattle (played by newcomer Lee Jones) barely survived a deadly battle. Thought dead, he was abandoned by Baron Erik Ventris (Brian F. O’Byrne) and Chamberlain Milus Corbett (Stephen Moyer), lest Brattle be taken back and celebrated as a “slain hero.” Wilkin retreats to a small farming village, where he may have nightmares, but he wakes to a lovely pregnant blonde, Petra (Elen Rhys), who speaks in flowery verse about their heir. Thus begins Kurt Sutter’s new FX drama, The Bastard Executioner. In this moment, it’s hard not to think about Sons of Anarchy, the series that Bastard creator Kurt Sutter wrapped up last fall. The tormented male protagonist with long flowing hair who is trying to abandon a life of violence and the impending fatherhood that gives him new purpose seems familiar. Over the first three hours of FX's "The Bastard Executioner," we see several pitched battles involving swords, spears, and flaming arrows. We witness limbs and heads sliced clean off, sit through men in dungeons being flayed alive, watch naked woman wander through scenes of incredible carnage, and see hallucinatory images of demons, snakes, and other creatures haunt the show's eponymous hero. The series is not skimping on graphic, macabre imagery. So why is it all so dull? "Bastard Executioner" (it debuts tonight at 10) was created by Kurt Sutter, the man responsible for the biggest hit in FX history, "Sons of Anarchy." Early in its run, particularly in its second season, "Sons" was one of TV's best, tightest dramas. But as the show went along, it got too big in every way, with plots contorted past all interest, and episodes expanded nearly to feature film length many weeks. Still, it was an enormous commercial success,...

Given how frequently Kurt Sutter’s last FX series, biker-gang drama Sons of Anarchy, showcased a near-medieval penchant for savage bloodletting, perhaps it shouldn’t be too surprising to see that the creator has flourished in the grimy, grisly 14th-century setting of The Bastard Executioner. Replete with torture chambers, sadistic lords, noble warriors, beheadings galore and miles of entrails, the Middle Ages feel like Sutter’s kind of sandbox.
The Bastard Executioner also feels immediately like the kind of story you’d expect Sutter to tell – a brutishly violent, narratively brusque tale of vengeance, populated by chiseled men of honor, cowardly snakes in the grass, oddball necromancers and a hideously scarred individual known only as the Dark Mute (and played by the showrunner himself, natch).

The myth of Oedipus is a rather dark tale for a family drama like Atlantis to tackle, so in 'Twist of Fate', said myth is fused with Three Men and a Baby for an adventure that's part royal scandal, part rollicking adventure and part 'wee-wee and poo-poo' slapstick.

Panic Button is a United Kingdom shot indie film that was recently released on Blu-Ray, DVD and video-on-demand. As Gertrude Stein once said, “Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.”
While Ms. Stein may have passed away in 1946, her sentiments have never been truer than at present. She might as well have been referring to Chris Crow’s 2011 British thriller Panic Button. Panic Button's theme is: too much information equals a lot of bloodshed. By simply viewing dangerous acts, engaging people with ulterior motives, and hacking private accounts, we are all inflicting some kind of violence upon one another. This is exactly what pisses off an animated cartoon alligator when four members of Facebook (I mean, the fictional All2gethr.com) board a private airplane bound for New York City after winning a competition.

As promised in our Event Report from this year's amazing as always Film4 FrightFest film fest in the UK, we're back with a full gallery of photos from the event taken by our man on the scene, Gareth aka Pestilence, along with a quartet of new reviews.
As you're no doubt aware from our past several years of covering the event, FrightFest is nothing if not eclectic, as evidenced by the films that are the subject of these four reviews from Gareth:
The Glass Man
Starring Andy Nyman, James Cosmo, Neve Campbell, Brett Allen
Directed by Cristian Solimeno
Martin Pyrite has lost his job. But instead of telling his wife, he continues his work routine and gets into enormous monetary difficulties. Then late one night a sinister debt collector bangs on his door with an offer – if Martin helps him carry out an important task, he’ll wipe the financial slate clean.
