For years, he's brought the dead to life in books like Patient Zero and Rot & Ruin, so it's rather fitting that prolific author Jonathan Maberry has now teamed up with the legendary George A. Romero to co-edit an anthology set within the early stages of the zombie uprising in Night of the Living Dead. Titled Nights of the Living Dead, the new anthology is now available from St. Martin's Press (check out our giveaway here), and to celebrate, we caught up with Maberry for our latest Q&A feature to discuss his work on the living dead dream project, and we also have a claustrophobic excerpt from his short story "Lone Gunman."
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Jonathan. How did the opportunity come about to collaborate on a Night of the Living Dead anthology with the legend himself, George A. Romero?

Coming off a highly successful 2016, Idw seemingly intends to make 2017 an even more prosperous year as the comic book publisher continues to expand into other media. Having previously made adaptations of 30 Days of Night and Wynonna Earp into mainstream hits, their next project will be somewhat of a reverse as their next commitment is that of The Devil.
No, they aren’t stepping on the toes of Fox’s Lucifer. Instead, they will be travelling back a few decades to craft a story based on the real life events of a notorious criminal. Idw themselves provided the following description:

Anyone following comic books these days is quite familiar with publishing juggernauts Marvel, DC and Image, but it’s important that we not forget the contributions of Idw, who sits firmly at the number four spot in the industry. Creating new franchises such as Locke & Key and 30 Days of Night have assuredly been instrumental in their success, but their mainstream titles based on properties such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Trek, and Transformers have sold like hotcakes as well.
Ted Adams, CEO of Idw Media Holdings, recently sat down with Cbr and spoke fondly of how 2016 was the publisher’s “best year ever”:
“If you look at the divisions, specifically with publishing, this has really been a breakout year for us. We won the National Book Award, which is the first time a graphic novel publisher has ever accomplished that. Our lines across the board really seem to be working for us.

The writing is well thought out and characters are planned with care as the plot unfolds in time. Supporting the grand writing is the artwork. Comic-Con is a wonderful place, one where exciting scoops can emerge from unexpected places. Attendees at the panel for Alexandre Aja’s upcoming Horns, a Daniel Radcliffe-led horror comedy about a young man trying to solve his girlfriend’s murder (which looks amazing by the way), were treated to plenty of information about that project, but one well-placed question led to an update about an entirely different but also promising project – Universal’s comic adaptation Locke & Key.
Joe Hill, the comic-book artist whose novel served as the inspiration for Horns, delivered the news, confirming that the long-in-development project will in fact be a trilogy and is currently taking shape at Universal Pictures. Albert Torres, the screenwriter of Henry Poole is Here, the upcoming Akira remake and an announced live-action version of Ben 10, has been tapped to adapt the L0cke & Key comic-book series, which Hill co-wrote with Gabriel Rodriguez.

Watching Joe Hill's Locke & Key go from page to screen (big or small) has been nothing short of an exercise in frustration. That being said, some good news has come out of the San Diego Comic-Con regarding the haunting property.

Albert Torres has been tapped to write Locke & Key, Universal’s adaptation of the award-winning supernatural comic book series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. Universal Pictures has signed Albert Torres to script its feature film adaption of "Locke & Key," the Idw Publishing comic book series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. Roberto Orci ("Star Trek 3"), Alex Kurtzman, Bobby Cohen and Idw's Ted Adams will produce the project. A New York Times best seller, "Locke & Key" follows Nina Locke and her three children, who return to an old family home in Massachusetts only to be hounded by an evil entity as they realize the house possesses magical keys that grant a vast array of powers and abilities. Torres' resume includes the 2008 Luke Wilson film "Henry Poole is Here," a draft of "Akira" for Warner Bros., "Ben 10" and "Hyde," based on the Dark Horse comic. "Locke & Key" was previously developed as a television pilot in 2011 by 20th Television ...

Screenwriting duo Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have become a Hollywood dream team, penning such blockbusters as Transformers, Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness. But this twosome has been branching out into producing, and so have been seeking a scribe to adapt the graphic novel Locke & Key. It looks like they've finally found their guy. THR reports Albert Torres has officially been hired to adapt the award-winning comic book series Locke & Key into a thrilling screenplay for Universal. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are producing the project along with Bobby Cohen (Now You See Me) and Ted Adams, CEO and publisher of Idw Publishing, which released the comics. For those unfamiliar, the best-selling comics by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez centered on three siblings (Tyler, Kinsey and Bode Locke) who are forced to move to their ancestral home in Maine when their father is...

Universal is wasting no time in getting their adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s Locke & Key off the ground. The studio acquired the rights to Idw Publishing’s supernatural graphic novel series last month and this week, they’ve brought on Henry Poole is Here scribe Albert Torres to pen the screenplay.
Torres’ resume is a bit lacking at the moment, though he’s reportedly been busy “tackling heavy-hitting tentpoles.” He worked on a draft of Warner Brothers’ own long-gestating graphic novel adaptation, Akira, as well as scripts for Silver Pictures’ Ben 10 and Paramount’s adaptation of the Dark Horse comic, Hyde.
The story of Locke & Key focuses on teenagers who go to live with their mother in her Massachusetts home after the murder of their father. Once there, the three kids find that the sprawling mansion, called Keyhouse, holds many secrets behind its closed doors, which...

Dear Video Gods, can it be? Is the feature adaptation of the Joe Hill comic series Locke & Key actually getting moving? After about a year of silence the buzz begins again as a writer has been found to pen the project! Miracles do happen!
THR reports that Albert Torres has been tapped to write Locke & Key, Universal’s adaptation of the award-winning supernatural comic book series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Bobby Cohen are to produce, as is Ted Adams, the CEO and publisher of Idw Publishing, the company behind the comic.
Locke & Key tells of three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine. They soon discover the house has magical keys that give the bearers a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know (but they soon will) that a devious demon also wants the keys.

Locke & Key tried to find life on the small screen, but the adaptation of the acclaimed comic book series never made it past the pilot stage. Fortunately for fans, Universal picked up the rights to the comics not too long ago and now they're getting serious about making the film as they've hired a writer to pen the script.
Locke & Key are among some of my favorite comics. They don't feature any superheroes, but it's a powerful story about dealing with loss, the supernatural, and figuring out what it means to grow up. If you haven't read it, the series from Joe Hill has wrapped up and all six graphic novels are available for purchase. I highly recommend them.
As such, I'm pretty excited to hear that Universal (thanks to THR for the scoop) have hired a writer for their big screen adaptation of the series:

Microsoft made a pretty big announcement today about "Xbox: Originals," their own original programming launching in June. Only a few of the projects sound Dread-worthy, but one in particular caught our eye.
Before we get to that, though, here's a quick rundown of what else you should be on the lookout for from Xbox Entertainment Studios:
- Two Halo projects: Along with a live-action "Halo" television series based on the award-winning video game franchise executive produced by Steven Spielberg, we'll also see a Halo digital feature released later this year from 343 Industries and Scott Free Productions, which will be executive produced by Ridley Scott and Scott Free TV President David Zucker. Sergio Mimica-Gezzan ("Battlestar Galactica," "Heroes") will direct.
- “Humans”: A new drama co-produced with UK broadcaster Channel 4. Award-winning UK production company Kudos will produce the hour-long, eight-episode series, which will share a premiere broadcast window on the...

Steve Niles is best known for creating 30 Days of Night, the comic that inspired the movie, but he is a man with fingers in a lot of pies. Since the early 1990s he has worked for pretty damn near every comic company, big and small. He has written Batman, The Creeper, Spawn, 28 Days Later, and X-Files, as well as his own creations Cal McDonald, Simon Dark, Mystery Society, and more. Generally eschewing super-heroes for the horror genre, he has gained a large following of dedicated fans.
With his strong Diy attitude and outspoken push for better creator rights, women’s rights, gender equality, and animal rights, Steve is a man of principle. He is also one of the nicest and most gracious people in comics. Steve always has time to interact with his fans, both online and at conventions or signings.

Supernatural comic book series "Locke & Key" was being eyed for a TV adaptation, but word from THR indicates the project is now headed to the big screen. Joe Hill — who also happens to be Stephen King's son and just released a new novel, "NOS4A2" — wrote the series, which centers on the Locke children. After their father is brutally murdered, the family moves into their ancestral home, the Keyhouse. They discover the house contains secrets and magical keys that unlock incredible powers.
But there is a dark force lurking there that wants the family to open a door that could destroy everything good in their world. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Bobby Cohen will produce the adaptation with Ted Adams, CEO and publisher of Idw Publishing, the company behind the comic book. People like Steven Spielberg have been fighting to get the project adapted for the past several years.

If you haven't heard of the multi award-winning comic series Locke & Key, you've really been missing out. This is an amazing property, and hopefully will soon make for a mind-blowing movie. Come on in to get the details!
Universal has optioned Locke & Key to develop as a feature film, and I have to say, I am incredibly excited. If you've never heard of it, Locke & Key is a comic book series by Joe Hill & Gabriel Rodriguez that has won multiple Eisner Awards and managed to hit the #1 spot on the New York Times Bestseller list. Hill, who is the son of Stephen King, won an Eisner for best writer, and the series has won the British Fantasy Award for best comic/graphic novel twice. I personally am a constant reader, and I have yet to be anything but impressed by the series. It's dark, intriguing, but more importantly both heartfelt and intellectually engaging.

I personally am a constant reader, and I have yet to be anything but impressed by the series. It's dark, intriguing, but more importantly both heartfelt and intellectually engaging.
