While the 22-year-old actor's charisma and looks are comparable to fellow Ya star Ansel Elgort, there's another reason why he looks so familiar. In his short nine years of acting, he's actually been in a handful of well-known movies and shows. Since you'll probably be seeing his face everywhere after the film's release on May 19, we've gathered a few fun facts about him to jumpstart your newfound obsession. 1. He's From Washington Nick was born in Seattle on March 22, 1995. At age 11, he made his professional acting debut in a local production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and eventually signed with The Savage Agency in La two years later. I enjoyed The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, the Y/A sci-fi novel that this film is based on. I thought it was interesting, entertaining and fun. I was intrigued to see if the film would be able to deliver those same things. I didn’t see the film right away, and I began to notice the negative reviews coming out about it. People giving it some super-low ratings and calling it “terrible” and “worthless” and other similar words. I wanted to check it out for myself.

This is it. The end of an era. After seven seasons of heartbreak (she'll always love you, Will!), headaches, incredibly sharp writing, and powerful performances from Julianna Margulies down to the many amazing guest stars, Alicia Florrick's story is coming to an end on May 8. The series finale, appropriately titled "End," was written by showrunners Robert and Michelle King, and directed by Robert King. Margulies told Entertainment Weekly the finale will be "satisfying, uplifting and sad." There are roughly two kinds of earthlings people in this world: those who love Rick Yancey’s The 5th Wave series and those who haven’t read it yet. The Ya sci-fi book series, the first adaptation of which landed in theaters in January, started in 2013 and has had readers wondering whether we actually do ever want to encounter life out there ever since. The film imagines America taken over by aliens – but the main tragedy seems to be that it’s happening to white, middle-class, attractive movie-star looking folks
If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans.”
Rick Yancey’s novel The 5th Wave opens with that quote from Stephen Hawking which, at this point, isn’t so much an insight as a cliché. Science-fiction has been rejiggering colonial narratives practically since it began as a genre: Hg Wells’s The War of the Worlds directly compares the alien invasion of England to Britain’s invasion of Tasmania. The nightmare is so familiar now it’s almost banal: what oh what would happen if someone, somewhere, treated us the way we treated them?

In this week’s roundup of the global box-office scene:
• Search for successor to The Hunger Games continues, as ossifying formula gives latest Ya franchise weak start
• ‘Viagra comedy’ Dirty Grandpa fails to satisfy De Niro or Efron fanbases
• Daddy’s Home hints at global expansion for comedy star Will Ferrell
Never mind the title, The 5th Wave actually arrives as the fourth round of big-budget young-adult adaptations. Twilight broke the market open, The Hunger Games consolidated it, Divergent/The Maze Runner set the formula, and The 5th Wave looks like it could spell Ya decline. Surfacing in the wake of Star Wars can’t have been easy for any competing sci-fi film, but $10.7m for sixth place in the Us is well below its peers (Twilight, $69m; The Hunger Games, $152m; Divergent, $54m; The Maze Runner, $32.5m). Prudently, Sony haven’t broken the bank for the film, spending $38m...

Forget it, Jake, it's January.
Like the title neighborhood in the movie "Chinatown," January at the box office is a dark and confusing place where nothing good ever happens.
That's how it played out this weekend, anyway, where the best that three new wide-release movies -- "Dirty Grandpa," "The Boy," and "The 5th Wave" -- could do was battle it out for fourth place with last week's flop "13 Hours" (pictured). And it was nearly a four-way tie, with the three new movies hovering around $11 million and "13 Hours" a tad behind with an estimated $9.8 million.
But even the hit holdover movies, including "The Revenant," "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and "Ride Along 2," all underperformed this weekend. "Revenant" came out on top, but with an estimated $16.0 million, well below the $20 to $25 million that analysts had predicted for the buzzed-about drama's third weekend of wide release.
Blame it on the weather (thanks,...

Chloë Grace Moretz battles teen-hating space invaders in this clunky adaptation of a Ya fantasy
This sci-fi fantasy, from the first book in Rick Yancey’s ongoing Ya series, mimics the riffs (feisty heroine, hunky boys, dystopian setting, devious adult corporations, potential love triangles etc) but lacks the cinematic legs of The Hunger Games or The Maze Runner. Chloë Grace Moretz is the likable teenager who finds herself fighting a guerrilla war when space invaders (“we call them ‘others’”) terrorise the planet and the army starts rounding up kids to fight in an ugly war. The British director J Blakeson, who worked low-budget wonders on The Disappearance of Alice Creed, handles the shifts and twists of the plot efficiently enough, but the result remains lumpen and crucially lacking in surprise.
At best, this yearns for the youthful grit of Kevin Macdonald’s How I Live Now crossed with the disaster...

Lately, if you feel unworthy because God has given you just too good a life...just too much joy... and your hair shirt is at the cleaners, you can do your penance by watching J Blakeson's The 5th Wave.
Yes, here's yet another dystopian teen mini-epic based on yet another acclaimed Ya title, this one by Rick Yancey. USA Today called the tome "a modern sci-fi masterpiece." Add Amazon Best Book of the Year to The 5th Wave's plaudits. Yet the screenplay it inspired, the one fashioned by Susannah (Erin Brockovich) Grant (Akiva I, Robot) Goldsman, and Jeff (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) Pinkner, might best be described as The Ennui Games or first-class teen drivel.
The tales begins with Cassie Sullivan (Chloë Grace Moretz), a lone, adolescent lass crossing a deserted roadway with a rifle in hand. She heads into a ransacked grocery store searching for any source of protein.

Chicago – Is there ever an end to the Young Adult Dystopia genre (“Hunger Games,” “Maze Runner,” etc.)? Or are we cursed with the end of the world every year, if it weren’t for those meddling kids? “The 5th Wave” is the latest adaptation, and if you haven’t read the source novel, good luck following it.

Yep, this is for fans of the book only, this time written by Rick Yancey, if that’s his real name. Instead of vampires or hunger or mazes, this time it’s space aliens (so obvious for the picking, good job Rick Y!). The numeric “wave” in the title refers to the step-by-step infiltration of the alien presence (1st, 2nd, etc.). At the 5th Wave, there is confrontation, and who better to confront those nasty invaders than a kid army and cute-as-a-button Chloë Grace Moretz. There is no subtlety in “The 5th Wave,...

Lazy and trite, with a passive protagonist. It’s as if no one here understands the appeal of the postapocalyptic Ya genre it is attempting to piggyback on. I’m “biast” (pro): big sci-fi fan; desperate for stories about women; like Chloë Grace Moretz
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
And so we reach the point at which movies based on postapocalyptic Ya novels have simply stopped bothering, and now just toss up on the screen a pretty heroine, a couple of hot guys, and an obstacle course of an adventure to plow through, and consider the job done. This one is so lazy and so trite that it is itself a kind of disaster.
Here, there have been four waves of attack on Earth by mysterious aliens hovering over the planet in gigantic ships.

Even if you're not a big reader of young adult fiction, you may have seen the advertisements for the new Chloë Grace Moretz movie The 5th Wave and suspected that it looks like the kind of movie that was adapted from a Ya franchise. All the elements are there: a post-apocalyptic dystopia, a winsome female protagonist who stands up to become the world's champion, an imperiled younger sibling and the winning combination of light science fiction and teenaged angst. The 5th Wave is the first in a trilogy of books by Rick Yancey about a group of underage rebels fighting off an alien invasion.

A lot of film trends can be found in Hollywood nowadays but films set in dystopian societies that are based on young adult novels are something else. First, you had The Hunger Games in 2012 setting the standard for these films. Next, and both coming out in 2014, were Divergent and The Maze Runner to add to the trend. Both very similar films, even though The Maze Runner was a bit more original. This dystopian trend continues in 2016 with the new film The 5th Wave.

Will The 5th Wave start another Hunger Games-style young adult movie franchise? Here's our review of the film...
Based on the first in a planned trilogy of Ya novels by Rick Yancey (the third instalment is due out this year), this teenagers vs aliens thriller incorporates elements of both Twilight and The Hunger Games and should play well to fans of the books. As such, it's engaging, well cast and pacily directed, but it's slightly let down by some trite dialogue and plot twists that you can see coming a mile away.

Well film fans, 2016’s not even a month old and we’re already back in “young adult novel” land at the multiplex. Well, it’s not the tear-jerker terminal romance of The Fault In Our Stars or If I Stay. No it’s another one about a horrible future in which several special “gifted” (and highly photogenic) teenagers are humanity’s only hope. Betcha’ thought that the last installment of The Hunger Games would bring down the curtain on these tormented teen tales. Not likely since a new series pops up almost every week at your local bookstore (oh, we are lucky to have these fine establishments, so support them). While this new film does possess familiar elements of other “Ya” novel based movies, the producers have thrown in a few unique themes and twists. And it stars one of our most interesting young actors (the star of the earlier...

Is The 5th Wave Hollywood’s most zeitgeist-y Ya adaptation yet? In place of totalitarian governments or societal factions, the J Blakeson-directed pic, an adaptation of Rick Yancey’s bestseller, paints a brutally matter-of-fact portrait of human civilization torn asunder by global terror, as wrought by unseen alien enemies.
Particularly during its grim first half-hour, parallels to real-life, international terrorist attacks run rampant, with scenes set in refugee camps and quarantine zones. In The 5th Wave‘s dark and dangerous world, a mysterious alien race, dubbed the Others, has arrived on Earth, hovering above cities in menacing spaceships and unleashing wave after wave of devastation – a electromagnetic pulse that wipes out all technology, mega-destructive tidal waves, an ultra-lethal strain of bird flu, Body Snatchers-esque infiltration – on the human race, with all the mercy of an exterminator dropping bug bombs. Their motives are almost beside the point, given how...

You would expect a movie about militarized teens protecting the Earth from alien invasion to be pulpy, and “The 5th Wave” certainly is — but not in the good way. Like a bad orange, this adaptation of the series-spawning novel by Rick Yancey lacks both juice and flavor. The film is being sold as science fiction, but sometime around the point where the heroine spies on her hunky comrade-in-arms chopping wood (before displaying his chiseled torso in a lake) we realize that this is actually yet another terrible Ya movie — a genre that’s reached such levels of audience exhaustion...

The Hunger Games movies may be finished, but now there’s another young adult book series that’s about to see its first cinematic adaptation.
The 5th Wave, based on the novel by Rick Yancey, stars Chloë Grace Moretz as Cassie Sullivan, a teenager on the run after planet Earth has been laid to waste. Alien attacks have left the planet devastated, and those humans who did survive are left in a state of fear and distrust. Cassie, however, is driven to survive and sets out to find her younger brother and save him before it’s too late.

Alien invaders behave intelligently before acting really, really stupidly in “The 5th Wave,” a tween-oriented sci-fi adventure that synthesizes “They Live,” “The Hunger Games,” and countless other visitors-from-another-world sagas. Based on the first of Rick Yancey’s series of novels, director J Blakeson’s film opens with young Cassie (Chloë Grace Moretz) running through the forest with a machine gun, finding a convenience store, and killing a suspicious man she suspected was hiding a weapon inside his coat. This marks Cassie as a do-what-you-gotta-do brand of heroine, and sets the stage for her ensuing ordeal combatting a race of extraterrestrials known as “The Others” who — for reasons that are never properly revealed — are bent on taking over Earth. Flashing back to the day before The Others’ arrival, “The 5th Wave” details Cassie’s calm-before-the-storm Ohio high school life, an existence full of partying with her Bff, flirting with football player...

The Force Awakens is now entering its 6th week, and looks certain to fall well short of Avatar's record domestic haul of $115 million plus.
Star Wars made $2.9 million over the weekend, a forty percent drop, to bring its cume to just over $85 million..
Coming in third was Roadshow's adaptation of R.L. Stine's Goosebumps. Opening on 273 screens, the Jack Black-starrer pulled in $2.8 million in its first week, neck and neck with J.J. Abrams' space opera over the weekend..
Sony's The 5th Wave came in fourth in its first week.

Among the sequels and reboots, there are also some exciting-looking original sci-fi films to look forward to in 2016. And here they are...
Did you see Coherence? Or maybe Predestination? They’re but two examples of relatively low-budget, original genre films that were both beautifully made and endlessly watchable. What they lacked in expensive special effects they more than made up for in mesmerising concepts and superb performances, whether it was from a cast of relative unknowns in Coherence or the perfect pairing of Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook in Predestination.
Only time will tell whether 2016 will play host to films as good as those, but we have to say, there are some potentially great sci-fi films on the horizon this year. Some have generous budgets and top-line casts, others are independently produced. For different reasons, all look well worth keeping an eye on...

Planet earth on the brink? Check. A Messiah complex that leaves the fate of the world on the shoulder of a sole individual? Check. And a female lead at the crux of the adventure? You bet. With Sony Pictures ticking all the necessary boxes for its adaptation of Rick Yancey’s sci-fi novel, it’s little wonder why the studio is aiming to massage The 5th Wave into a new Ya franchise just as the likes of Maze Runner and The Divergent Series begin to enter their twilight years.
Taking point for this one is Kick-Ass starlet Chloe Grace Moretz, who is one of the few survivors of a staggered alien invasion that brings planet earth to its knees across four distinct waves. Each of these consecutive attacks effectively neuter any possible defence force that the remnants of humanity can muster, and when the imminent 5th Wave will mean the...

The first trailer for The 5th Wave was pretty awesome, but the second trailer that recently dropped makes the film look even more intense than before. View the latest trailer for the Chloe Moretz sci-fi film below: Sony Pictures dropped a new look at the upcoming adaptation of author Rick Yancey's first entry in his Ya invasion trilogy. Moretz stars as Cassie, a young woman who survives four waves of an alien invasion and is about to experience a fifth while trying to find her brother. After banding together with other survivors around her age, Cassie embarks on the mission of a lifetime . just as the enemy is about to launch its most important offensive. The 5th Wave is the latest Ya series to be adapted for film. Following in the footsteps of several thematically similar series, the film depicts an apocalyptic world where the hero/heroine is a young adult who is forced to be mature beyond her years. The film is based on the NY Times Bestseller by Rick Yancey.
Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) plays Cassie Sullivan who is thrust into a harsh world of survival where the greatest peril may be knowing who to trust. The setting is the Us after an alien invasion that comes in “waves”. Waves that occur prior to the main plot of the story include attacks on global power supply, a plague-like virus, mass destruction of urban areas, and then finally invasion through impersonating humans. It can't be that hard to cut a trailer for young adult sci-fi that doesn't look as generic and by-the-book as what we've seen from The 5th Wave thus far. The Hunger Games has done it. The Maze Runner has done it. Divergent, to an extent, has done it. But Sony adaptation of Rick Yancey's book is failing pretty miserably at it. It takes a certain kind of talent to have Chloe Moretz... Read More...

We’re coming up to an interesting point in the recent history of the Ya movie. “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” have come to an end, and “The Hunger Games” wraps up in November. And though there are a few possible contenders (“The Maze Runner” did better than most expected), most of the films trying to fill their gaps, from “Eragon” to “Beautiful Creatures,” have died on the vine. Will the same fate happen to “The 5th Wave?” Based on a novel by Rick Yancey, the film sees Chloë Grace Moretz as teen Cassidy, who searches for her younger brother after an alien race have decimated the Earth’s population. Nick Robinson, Maika Monroe, Alex Roe, Liev Schreiber, Tony Revolori, Ron Livingston and Maggie Siff also star, and Sony released a new full-length trailer for the movie this morning. On the one hand, it doesn’t look like it’s breaking...

Wave one: Take out Earth's power. Wave two: Cause a massive earthquake. Wave three: Spread disease. Wave four: Invade the ground and inhabit human hosts. What will "The 5th Wave" be?
In the trailer for the sci-fi movie based on Rick Yancey's book series of the same name, Chloe Grace Moretz is trying to survive an alien onslaught. Cassie has managed to live through the first four waves, but faces even more difficult trials as the fifth wave begins. Now, her brother's gone missing and she can't trust anyone (since the Others can take over human bodies).
In the trailer, "The 5th Wave" ticks off all the boxes for a Ya post-apocalyptic film: brave, teen girl trying to save a younger sibling; lots of action and armed conflict; attractive, but possibly untrustworthy teen guys; ravaged cityscapes. Whether it'll be a worthy replacement when the "Hunger Games" saga ends this year,...

The first wave was vampiric in nature, as Twilight flooded our movie theatres. Katniss Everdeen proved herself a warrior, leading the second wave with The Hunger Games. The challenges of being true to yourself were explored in the Divergent third wave, and the fourth wave saw the arrival of The Maze Runner. Now, it’s time to strap in for the fifth wave – conveniently titled The 5th Wave – which is the latest attempt to capture that all-important ‘Millenials box-office dollar’ with a teens-save-the-day literary adaptation. Here, some pesky aliens suddenly appear to declare war on Earth and unleash wave after wave of strategic blows to the planet.

Watch out Jennifer Lawrence and Shailene Woodley, Chloë Grace Moretz is making a bid for Ya movie stardom with her newest blockbuster The 5th Wave.
Based on Rick Yancey's best-selling novel, the story centres around a 16-year-old girl scrambling to survive in the wake of an alien invasion.
5th Wave already has one sequel in book form, The Infinite Sea, with trilogy closer The Last Star arriving in 2016 and destined to be split into two movies.
Speaking to Digital Spy last year, Moretz said that The 5th Wave will stand out from films like The Hunger Games and Divergent because of its strong focus on family.
"The girl I play, Cassie, loses her entire family, except for her little brother, but she has to fight and struggle to find him again because she has no-one left in her life," she said.

Chloe Grace Moretz stars as aliens invade in The 5th Wave, based on the books by Rick Yancey...
With The Hunger Games coming to an end this year, that's going to leave something a gap in the cinema schedules for a big young adult movie franchise. Divergent isn't really filling the gap too well, whilst the second Maze Runner movie will give us a better idea of how things are faring there.
So could The 5th Wave step in? Starring Chloe Grace Moretz and based on the Rick Yancey-penned book series, it tells of a world in the midst of an alien invasion. Thus, Moretz's character, Cassie Sullivan, is one of those trying to survive, and in her case, trying to reunite with her younger brother.
