New documentary Summer of Soul recalls an iconic moment in 60s music – but it has taken far too long for us to see the footage
Rousing new music doc Summer of Soul reveals an embarrassment of riches on stage at the 1969 Harlem cultural festival: Stevie Wonder (doing a drum solo), Sly and the Family Stone, Gladys Knight, Nina Simone and so many more. It was nicknamed Black Woodstock: a joyous celebration of Black pride at a pivotal moment in US history. All of which will make many viewers wonder: why have we never heard of it before?

Maybe it’s because I never even heard Sly and the Family Stone’s “Thank you” before but come on Wild Cherry! “Play that Funky Music White Boy” is a total rip off. Sly’s song came out in 1969 and Wild Cherry’s came out in 1976. I cannot find one lawsuit, not one complaint, nothing. Am I completely missing something here? Have I not researched it enough? How could Sly and the Family Stone not be pissed off at this? Trust me when I say music is ripped all the time and there are fine lines. But this is no fine line

I had a close friend and brother-in-arms named Larry Schlam, an attorney who specialized in juvenile rights. He later became a law professor and a lecturer on that same issue. He had been a doo-wop singer in Brooklyn, but that has no relevance to this topic. As it comes to us all, Larry died last year.
Back in 1971 or 1972, I was with Larry at his office in downtown Chicago. We were working late – to the extent that we were actually working – and I left around 10 Pm. As I walked towards the elevators, I saw one about to close and, like many late-evening neurotics, I was convinced that was the last elevator for the night. I shouted “Please hold the elevator!” and a giant mitt popped out to hold the door open. I trotted into the booth, turned to thank my benefactor, and found myself face-to-face with Muhammad Ali.

Prince's conversion to the Jehovah's Witness religion actually started, in a roundabout way, with Sly & the Family Stone. Well, that's not entirely accurate: It started with Graham Central Station, the funk group started by Sly and the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham after his tenure in that band. "I was on tour with Sinbad, Graham Central Station, Earth Wind & Fire and Teena Marie," Graham explained in 2013. "We did a show in Tennessee and we were playing the amphitheater and Prince was playing the big arena there in Nashville. He heard I was in town and invited me to one of his famous after-shows.

For a while, it looked like D'Angelo was going to become R&B's Axl Rose. The parallels are easy to spot: Both individuals are massively talented perfectionists whose personal struggles threatened to drown long-awaited follow-ups to early successes. In Rose's case, that would be Chinese Democracy, a Guns N' Roses album so delayed it became a running joke ("We'll have democracy in China before we have Chinese Democracy," for example), and for D'Angelo, it was the follow-up to 2000's Voodoo, which was eventually released in Dec. 2014 as Black Messiah. On Monday, Black Messiah quickly earned two Grammy Awards - Best...

Jeff Buckley likely never intended to be remembered as a cover artist, but that is the legacy the late singer, who died in 1997 with just one album to his name, has left behind. And it'll continue into 2016: NPR reports that another posthumous Buckley album, You and I, is set to be released next March, this one featuring mostly covers he recorded as reference tracks to give his producers a sense of the sound he was after for his debut album. It'll include his take on Led Zeppelin's "Night Flight," Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman," the Smiths' "I Know It's Over" and "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side," and others, as well as two original songs. NPR also has a first listen of his cover of Sly and the Family Stone's 1968 classic anthem for equality "Everyday People," which Buckley has pared down considerably. Like...

Stephen Colbert's Late Show musical guests have so far included Kendrick Lamar, Toby Keith, Paul Simon (a.k.a. Troubled Waters), and everyone you know covering Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People." Add Run the Jewels and TV on the Radio to that impressive list, who joined forces last night to tear through Rtj's towering "Angel Duster." It was so mind-numbingly good that Colbert felt compelled to run backstage and throw up the pistol and fist with Killer Mike and El-p, as you do.

Rubble Kings
Directed by Shan Nicholson
USA, 2010
Draped in graffiti, a rickety old subway train makes its way across a rugged slice of New York that looks more like Mad Max than Mad Men. Only seconds into director Shan Nicholson’s documentary Rubble Kings, the audience understands that the residents on display in the film’s South Bronx ghettos live in a place that barely qualifies as America. The Bronx in the early seventies was a ruthless kingdom, where the only laws that mattered were those imposed by the hoodlums that claimed your block. Rubble Kings takes a look at the rise of New York City’s gang life in the early seventies while also making the case that the emergence of hip-hop played a large role in New York gang culture’s decline.

Music and Sex: Scenes from a life - A novel in progress by Roman AkLeff (first installment can be read here; second here; third here).
The bar across Broadway between 113th and 114th Streets, the West End, was supposedly famous. Or at least the orientation materials had seemed to consider it an important part of Columbia history because it had been a hangout for literary figures, some of them Columbia men, though he had not yet read anything by any of them. Of more interest to Walter, there was jazz there. In passing by one Saturday afternoon on the way to Citibank, he'd seen a sign boasting that the Louis Armstrong All Stars were playing.
That night, he walked the half block south from his dorm to the West End. Inside there was a huge semi-oval bar in the center of the room. Following the sound of music, he found...

It's not that hard to believe that it's been 25 years since the release of "Heathers," on March 31, 1989.
Really, the movie seems like an artifact from a different era, one paradoxically bolder than our own. It's hard to imagine a movie getting made today that makes fun of teen suicide, schoolhouse violence, and the public grieving process that follows both. "Heathers"'s gleefully gruesome satire made stars out of Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, and Shannen Doherty, launched the careers of screenwriter Daniel Waters and director Michael Lehmann, and created the mold for subversive schoolgirl comedies to come, from "Clueless" to "Mean Girls."
"Heathers" wasn't a hit at first, but it eventually became such a huge cult success that it made lunchroom polls and lines like "What's your damage?" into pop-culture fixtures. Still, as many times as you've seen it, there's still much you may not know about "Heathers," from which other...

Ranked: All of the Album of the Year Grammy Winners from Worst to Best How does Adele stack up? By Nick Keppler The Oscars are sometimes wrong, but The Grammys, well, they are rarely right. Due to the old and conservative voters that have lead the awards since the beginning, the Grammys have missed out on a huge chunk of music history as it was happening. Queen, Talking Heads, 2pac, The Ramones, Diana Ross, Sly and the Family Stone, Janis Joplin, The Doors, The Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Bob Marley are among those who never won. Bob Dylan didn’t get a golden statue until the late ’70s and Van Morrison, Pink Floyd, and the Rolling Stones all waited until the ’90s. Because of that, there was a wide span, in terms of quality, when we looked back and ranked the discs that have won Album [...]...

Meet Tyler Cordy, vocalist and emcee of 2Am Club. Tyler's six-member pop/rock/dance band out of L.A. is gearing up for the release of their debut album "What Did You Think Would Happen," on Tuesday, September 14th. Their single, "Worry About You" is climbing the music charts with its smooth 'n funky vibe and the stylsistic vocals of Cordy and fellow band-mate/singer Marc Griffin. MTV recently named them Push Artist of the Week, and they're about to embark on a multi-city tour opening for synthpop/dancepop artist Mike Posner. At a stop over in Columbus, Ohio just days before the album's release, Tyler took a break to speak with us about 2Am Club's beginning, the complexities of the song-writing process, and life on the road with this close-knit band of brothers. Let's start with the band itself, beginning with the name. I understand there's a bit of history behind it.

It was all but inevitable that that Elizabeth Gilbert's blockbuster book, Eat, Pray, Love (2010) would eventually make its way to the big screen. Now it's just about upon us. And when it arrives it will do so not as an indie film, but rather a high-end studio feature with an unlikely writer-director at the helm and an A-list leading lady who might be perfect for the role... or completely miscast (if you believe the naysayers out there). That star is, of course, Julia Roberts, and the writer-director is Ryan Murphy, the man behind Glee (TV). Gilbert's tome was a memoir about a woman -- Gilbert herself -- who gives up what seems, outwardly, to be an ideal life in order to pursue one that more genuinely makes her happy. So, she ends her marriage and heads off to travel the world, to soak it all in, and to -- say...

When most people think of the song Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be) they usually think about one person: Doris Day. Well, as much as it may offend musical purists out there, my mind doesn't go to the paragon of wholesome American girls everywhere. No, I think of good old Martha "Dumptruck" Dunnstock from the 1989 teen classic, Heathers, which is why today's Scenes (Songs) We Love is dedicated to that black comedy and Sly and The Family Stone's 1973 cover of Day's classic song that plays in the film's final moments.

A legion of dancers and drummers heralded South African trumpet legend Hugh Masekela, who opened the event with singer Lira. Following an address by FIFA president Sepp Blatter and South African president Jacob Zuma, the Black Eyed Peas rocked the stage. The Peas got the party started with their...

With 135 bands on the bill, the three-day Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which begins today, offers a blend of big stars, buzz bands, veterans acts making – they hope – a comeback, inspired DJs and relatively new artists with the promise to do bigger things. That egalitarian blend is what makes Coachella the best festival in the U.S.: Until a band you’re eager to see is ready to appear on one of the five stages spread through the huge pitch, you’re likely to find something nearby that’s worth hearing.
This year, among the acts that are scheduled to appear are a few curiosities. Not that they aren’t talented or can’t be fabulous. It’s that few of us in the audience can know what to expect until the music begins. To whit:

The funk musician, real name Sylvester Stewart, is suing Jerry Goldstein over alleged fraud and stolen royalties, the BBC reports. The 66-year-old, who fronted 1970s group Sly and the Family Stone, claims that Goldstein registered the group's name with authorities as his own and used it to divert millions in royalties to fund his luxurious lifestyle. Stone has asked the Los Angeles Superior Court for the full accounts from royalty collection companies to (more)...

The week was only four days long, but it ended up being one of the busiest weeks in the history of the MTV Newsroom blog. It's easy to see why, as we had constant updates from the ground in Haiti, tracked the end of the war between Conan O'Brien and NBC and caught up with Nick Jonas, Rivers Cuomo and Prince. Before you speed out to see "The Tooth Fairy" or crank up your copy of the performance's from "Hope for Haiti Now" (available on iTunes for $7.99), check out the links below for anything you might have missed this week.
» If you haven't been following along with all of the reports from student volunteer Alison Smith and the MTV News team in Haiti, be sure to check out all of their dispatches to get a sense of what's going on in Haiti and what still needs to be done.

Another year, another desert blowout. And this one's actually for the kids. After leaning heavily on some relative geezers for the last few go-rounds, organizers of the 2010 edition of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival are going back to the future, tapping a host of modern acts for an eclectic slate that includes Jay-z, Muse, Thom Yorke, Gorillaz, LCD Soundsystem and a reunited Pavement, and still manages a few blasts from the past, Sly and the Family Stone, Devo and Echo and the Bunnymen among them. The biggest musical gathering west of the Mississippi, Coachella is set to take place April 16-18 at its usual haunt, the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif. But with the inclusion in the...

The 2010 festival season is officially underway, as the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (which will be held in the usual place in Indio, California on April 16, 17 and 18) now has an official lineup. Jay-z, Muse, Pavement, Gorillaz, Faith No More and Vampire Weekend lead the way at the top of the pile, but there are also plenty of up-and-comers who will be worth spending time with in the desert heat (you should already schedule time to see Beach House play their new songs on Saturday).
Since no lineup is perfect, let's take a look at the five bands we're most looking forward to, along with the five bands that make us go "Huh?"
The Best
Them Crooked Vultures: They're perhaps the best live band working right now, and Josh Homme songs always sound better when you're a little bit dehydrated.

Coachella has always been seen as the least traditional of the big U.S. music festivals, and in 2010, they're definitely staying with that sentiment. On Tuesday (January 19), organizers revealed the lineup for this year's Coachella fest — set for April 15-18 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California — and the bill is topped by three acts you wouldn't necessarily see headlining fests here in the states (except when the Beastie Boys drop out at the last minute): Jay-z, Muse and Gorillaz.

Joining them are the usual assortment of 'Chella acts, including the prerequisite reunited acts (Pavement, Faith No More), the icons (Thom Yorke, Devo, Sly and the Family Stone), the indie stalwarts (Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Spoon, Mgmt), the hotly tipped buzz acts (Yeasayer,...

San Francisco — San Franciscans surprised by the honest-to-goodness summer weather that showed up this weekend finally had a chance to zip up their hoodies on the second night of the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival. But headliner Dave Matthews gave the crowd plenty of reasons to wiggle the chills away during his two-and-a-half-hour set.
Matthews and his eponymous band played with the precision that comes from knowing how their bandmates work, which produced some impressive jams and awe-inspiring solos. Matthews provided a dose of early-millennial nostalgia with a set that focused heavily on favorites like "Jimi Thing" and "Ants Marching.
