A decade after his breakthrough role as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Ava DuVernay’s Selma, David Oyelowo says he is heartened by the long-overdue shift toward a more culturally diverse marketplace for onscreen storytelling.
As part of NATPE 2024’s official programming, Oyelowo appeared onstage in front of a lively crowd of 150 guests at the InterContinental Miami to discuss his wide-ranging career as an actor, director and producer before receiving The Hollywood Reporter’s “Trailblazer Award” — a commendation given to Hollywood creatives whose work reflects a commitment to amplifying marginalized creators and stories.
“Streaming has really democratized things and the generational impact is seismic,” said Oyelowo, who joins recent THR Trailblazer honorees America Ferrera, Eva Longoria and Niecy Nash-Betts in receiving the award. “I know what marginalization looks like. I know how stories can break down prejudices. I feel it deeply because I’ve experienced it.”

A young Black man (Myles Frost) leaves a convenience store just after making a purchase. He puts the hood on his sweatshirt up, and continues on his way, all the while talking to someone on the phone. He suddenly realizes that a truck has been following him as he walks, looping around the block to pass him several times. It takes a moment, but we realize what we are seeing is the moment just before the murder of Trayvon Martin, an incident that set off rallies and protests across the United States. And it’s a moment that becomes pivotal to Pulitzer Award-winning writer and journalist Isabel Wilkerson (played by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in the film). She’s asked to write an article about the case in light of the discovery of audio tapes shedding new light on the events of that evening. Wilkerson eventually turns down the request because, for her,...

British star David Oyelowo feels it has taken a decade for Selma and his iconic portrayal of Dr Martin Luther King to find its audience and acknowledges Brad Pitt for telling him to be patient.
David Oyelowo is one of Britain’s leading actors, and his unforgettable portrayal of Martin Luther King in 2014’s Selma still serves as one of the career highs for a performer who has plenty of them. However, Oyelowo has spoken in the past about the film’s reception and what a strange time it was for him. Despite clearly inhabiting the role, the actor was overlooked at the Oscars and the film itself came under some fire for historical inaccuracy.
Recalls the actor, ‘“There was this controversy about whether the film was historically accurate. Plus, there was “the whole Oscar thing and #oscarsowhite, all this noise around the film, as opposed to what the film was.

David Oyelowo said Brad Pitt, an executive producer of Selma, gave him a valuable piece of advice about not rushing to determine any film’s ultimate place in the culture.
Upon its initial release in December 2014, Oyelowo recalled in an appearance Tuesday at the NATPE Global conference in Miami, “there was this controversy about whether the film was historically accurate.” Plus, there was “the whole Oscar thing and #oscarsowhite, all this noise around the film, as opposed to what the film was.”
Despite acclaim for Oyelowo’s performance as Dr. Martin Luther King and overall support from critics and awards voters, the film received just two Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture, winning only for Best Original Song. Its global box office total was a muted $67.8 million.
Pitt told Oyelowo, who was upset about all of the turmoil, “‘Don’t worry about any of that,” the actor recalled. “You...

The MLK holiday weekend proved to be surprisingly fruitful at the box office thanks to strong showings from both the "Mean Girls" movie musical and Jason Statham's new beat-em-up, "The Beekeeper." Unfortunately, they can't all be winners and Sony Pictures' new comedic Biblical epic "The Book of Clarence" faltered in its debut. It now has the distinction of being the first true theatrical disappointment of 2024.
Directed by Jeymes Samuel, the film opened to just $2.5 million over the weekend, with that number growing to $3 million when accounting for the Monday holiday, per The Numbers. It placed 10th on the charts, barely squeaking into the top 10 sandwiched between a pair of holdovers in the forms of "The Boys in the Boat" ($3.4 million) and "The Iron Claw" ($2.4 million). A rough start, to be certain. And yes, certain parts of the U.S. are experiencing terrible winter weather, which impacted moviegoing for sure.

Exclusive: If on MLK Day, you wanted to view a movie that breathes life into the struggles faced by Martin Luther King Jr and his Civil Rights movement cohorts, look no further than Rustin. Directed by George C. Wolfe and starring Colman Domingo as Bayard Rustin, the Netflix & Higher Ground drama tells of the title character’s unsung role in making possible the March on Washington D.C., the historical 1963 event where MLK became an icon following his “I have a dream” speech. The awards caliber film was a favorite on the fall festival circuit, and outside of Ava DuVernay’s Selma, it is perhaps the most penetrating look at Dr. King and his coterie of advisors, and the price they all paid in attacking racism and ending segregation in the South.
Deadline: In making Rustin, the story of how activist Bayard Rustin overcame racism and homophobia and organized the 1963 March on Washington where Dr.

On Jan. 4, 1984, NBC unveiled Night Court, which went on to air for nine seasons and get a recent revival. The Hollywood Reporter weighed in with a full review, headlined “Night Court convicted of being consistently amusing TV sitcom,” as it entered its sophomore run:
Night Court is a consistently funny sitcom created by Reinhold Weege, a writer-producer for the old Barney Miller series. Its venue, weekly parade of various weirdos, and quirky regulars are reminiscent of Miller. And, like Miller, Night Court has more laughs per episode than most sitcoms.
Anchoring the series is Harry Anderson, as unorthodox Manhattan arraignment court judge, Harry Stone. Judge Stone is sharp and fair, but he seizes every available opportunity to turn due process of law into an excuse for levity. Anderson manages to wring just the right amount of irony out of lines like, “Being a judge means never having to say you’re sorry.

What do moviegoers want to see right now? For decades, studios have had very specific answers to this question, but considering that 2023’s box office was dominated by two films called Barbie and Oppenheimer, it seems like those preconceived notions might be changing. When we look at the films already scheduled for 2024, there certainly seems to be a lot of familiarity that might be old hat.
But look again at a few of the auteur pieces that have already been slated. Even the blockbuster class looks surprisingly ambitious, with new works from the likes of George Miller, Denis Villeneuve, and Bong Joon-ho. There are also familiar favorites, such as a new Deadpool flick, and curious question marks–like Robert Eggers remaking the greatest vampire movie of all time more than a hundred years later. 2024 should be an interesting year at the movies. So here are a few to watch out for.

This eye-catching, dimension-traveling adventure might be aimed at kids, but there’s plenty here for adults who grew up believing the possibilities of animation might be endless. Now that Disney has done its best to persuade us otherwise, Benoît Chieux’s fabulous Sirocco and the Kingdom of Air Streams is here as a palate-cleanser, tucking away a tender story of love and loss in an insanely imaginative psychedelic brainstorm. If Matt Groening and Miyazaki took magic mushrooms and watched The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine together, they could conceivably come up with a movie to match this.
Chuck Jones’ 1970 classic (albeit for weird kids and stoners only) The Phantom Tollbooth is a suitable benchmark, only here it is a game of hopscotch that provides the conduit between this world and the Kingdom of Air Streams. Which is where the story begins, with the mighty wizard Sirocco summoning the elements to assuage his boredom.

Apple TV+’s post-apocalyptic science fiction series Silo (read our 8/10 review Here) is based on a series of stories written by author Hugh Howey. And it looks like Apple TV+ is interesting in bringing some of those stories to the screen, because Deadline reports they have officially ordered Silo season 2!

Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay are two of the creative leaders honored for Variety’s 2022 Power of Women presented by Lifetime. For more, click here.
Oprah Winfrey has spent most of her career talking, so it’s a little surprising that the only sound you hear from the porch of her second home in Maui is absolute silence. Forget about the ocean waves or rustling palm trees. Ok, if you’re lucky enough to hang with Oprah for an entire afternoon, this zen will be interrupted by the periodic squawking of wild roosters. In such a tranquil retreat, you can think clearly, cradled in the beauty of all that Hawaii has to offer.
It’s this very place of refuge, in fact, where Winfrey set a trap for filmmaker Ava DuVernay that would launch one of their greatest collaborations: OWN’s “Queen Sugar.”
