A panel comprising Rachel Griffiths, producer Sue Maslin, Teresa Palmer, and Event Hospitality and Entertainment CEO Jane Hastings will judge next month’s inaugural Australian Women’s Film Festival.
The short film festival, which is being relaunched after the pandemic forced its postponement last year, will be held on Sunday, March 14 at Event Cinemas Bondi Junction in Sydney, in line with International Women’s Day.
Designed to support, encourage, and celebrate female storytellers and leaders within the film industry, Awff is the brainchild of Australian producers and filmmakers Kelly Tomasich and Tahyna MacManus (MuM – Misunderstanding of Miscarriage Documentary).
A condition of entry to Awff is that three out of five key creatives on a project must be female.
Entries are also subject to the Bechdel test – a measure of the representation of women in fiction that asks whether a work features at least two women who talk to each other...

One of the key criticisms bandied about regarding horror movies in recent years has been the abundance of films which have focused on the brutalisation of women. Films like I Spit On Your Grave and its sequel, Maniac, Hidden In The Woods and many other films have focused on this aspect, some have done so in a manner which feels like it has a point to make, some do so veering close to doing it in an exploitative sense, indeed the BBFC felt so with the cut version of I Spit… Julia also fits into this rubric but while there are some aspects which are certainly problematic, as a film in its own right, it’s more interesting...

Julia
Written & Directed by Matthew A. Brown
USA, 2014
Not all movies have a grand message or thought-provoking theme. Some movies are satisfied with being a beautiful orgy of sex and madness. Matthew A. Brown’s debut film, Julia, is a stylized bloodletting that pushes the limits of good taste and tests your allegiance to its heroine. A delightfully sordid affair that leaves you feeling all kinds of icky, this is a must-add to your October calendar.
Julia is the perfect companion piece to another wonderfully-dark 2014 revenge thriller, Blue Ruin. Only, instead of the protagonist being completely inept at the deadly arts, Julia Shames (Ashley C. Williams) was born to play the part. Wrapped beneath three layers of clothing and hiding behind giant “grandma” glasses, Julia is a cute but awkward girl who tries her best to be invisible. When she finally musters the courage to accept a date with the...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Archstone Distribution. Director/writer: Matthew A. Brown. Cast: Ashley C. Williams, Tahyna Tozzi, Jack Noseworthy and Joel de la Fuente. Julia is a rape revenge thriller, from first time feature filmmaker Mathew A. Brown. This film is set to release at the Screamfest La film festival and an early review of the film is hosted here. In Julia, one very shy woman walks into an isolated apartment. Here, a horrifying tragedy takes place, one which is familiar to this genre. The next seventy or so minutes involves the protagonist transforming into something more bloody and murderous. Heavy on tropes and castration scenes, Julia is an unsettling horror film. The film utilizes lighting effectively, while the film builds in intensity. Julia is a haunting feature, which is difficult to forget. The film begins and stays with the character Julia (Ashley C. Williams...

There is one other film of note, which is attending Screamfest La. The film is a rape revenge thriller, titled Julia. This film, from Tombstone Distribution, offers a lot of dark imagery as a woman contemplates murder. Julia stars Ashley C. Williams (The Human Centipede), Tayhna Tozzi and Jack Noseworthy. A preview of the film's North American Premiere is here. More story details can be found in the film's trailer. The clip shows Julia (Williams), tracking down her rapists. From one scene, it looks like she has teamed up with another female character. However, this second person is likely an external projection of her shadow (a Jungian term). Fans of horror or thrillers can find more story details for themselves, in the clip below. Release Date: October 21st, 2014 (World Premiere). Director/writer: Matthew A. Brown. Cast: Ashley C. Not that it is shrouded in mystery, but Mark Webber has a distinct way of working that might be regarded Cassavetes-like for his realism and making his narratives into true family affairs – we only need to reference The End of Love (Sundance ’12) as a prime example. And speaking of family, Webber reteams with cinematographer Patrice Lucien Cochet and here partners up with Teresa Palmer – the actress and actor are attached at the limb in more than just a creative manner. Filming commenced on The Ever After in Australia earlier in the year and apparently moved from Los Angeles and New York in July and August, which means a rough cut could have been submitted. Webber, Palmer, pint-sized Phoebe Tonkin, Jaime King, Rosario Dawson, Melissa Leo, Joshua Leonard, Tahyna Tozzi, Kid Cudi and Tom Bower are part of the film’s make-up and Before Midnight was such a hit last year...

We've previously featured the lovely, Ani-Mia, when she was cosplaying as Rogue and also as Quailman from Doug. But me thinks, she has outdone herself with her latest cosplays, Emma Frost and Zatanna. Both comic book characters, Emma and Zatanna, have been brought to life in live-action format. Emma, has been portrayed by three actresses: Finola Hughes in the 1996 live-action television movie Generation X, Tahyna Tozzi in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and most recently, January Jones in X-Men: First Class. As for Zatanna, only one actress has played her in a live-action format, and that honer goes to Serinda Swan ("Smallville"). It's a truth universally acknowledged that a young actress with a string of blockbusters to her name must also have her own production company. But whether that company actually produces anything depends on many things, including the ambitions of the person.
Since co-founding production company Wood Cabin Pictures (formerly Avakea Productions) with model and actress Tahyna Tozzi almost three years ago, Teresa Palmer has been developing the script for Track Town, a film centred around the hip hop culture in Adelaide.
"It's a gritty Australian story set in the 90s," Palmer tells If. "It's the story of two women in their twenties who are polar opposites. They accidentally kill the brother of this underworld figure and so they're being pursued and they meet interesting characters on the road. There's humour and action and drama."
The script is currently in finishing stages with the plan being for Palmer and Tozzi to play the film's leads.

It's a truth universally acknowledged that a starlet with a string of blockbusters to her name must also have her own production company. But whether that company actually produces anything depends on the ambitions of the starlet.

Lionsgate will distribute Filmscope Entertainment’s Needle across North America on November 29 via DVD, Video-on-demand and digital download.
The release follows the success of the Western Australian horror film in Turkey, where it has taken $US250,000 and has also seen Visey acquire the DVD rights for Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, while Entertainment One has bought the rights for the Benelux region.
Needle‘s producer Deidre Kitcher said, “Lionsgate are the masters of horror film distribution in North America and for a small West Australian film to secure such a release through them is very exciting and a credit to the team and vision of the Director, John V. Soto.”
“I’m confident the film will do well as Americans love a good scare and appreciate fresh, inventive material, said John V. Soto. “I’m sure they’ll get a kick out the supernatural voodoo machine and mythology we created.

Australian horror film Needle has taken $US135,000 in 10 days on 62 screens ($2177 per screen) in Turkey.
Needle is about a killer who uses an 18th century machine with supernatural powers to terrorize students at a local college.
The strong box office performance keeps Needle in Turkey’s top 6 films for the second week behind just Harry Potter, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Smurfs, Tranformers and Larry Crowne.
“The continuing success of Needle overseas,” said the film’s director, John V. Soto, “now sold in over 65 countries, proves that our strategy is exactly right. If you make a film that has broad international appeal then you have a far greater chance of recouping the cost and going into profit, than if you make a film that maybe only plays in its homeland. The movie only needs to be a hit in one country and you’re halfway there.”

Title: Trophy Kids Director: Josh Sugarman Starring: Ryan Eggold, David Gallagher, Tahyna Tozzi, Nathan Lee Graham, Tibor Feldman, David Thornton, Tania Raymonde A world premiere, in-competition title at the 14th annual Dances With Films festival, ‘Trophy Kids’ is that rare independent film that turns its lens on the moviemaking process itself, and doesn’t morph into a self-congratulating circle jerk of air-quote misunderstood artistic grievance. Instead, it’s ambitious and playful, flirty and mysterious, puffed-up and yet also nervous and candid about its ambivalence and uncertainty toward storytelling form, and what makes a film a true work of art. In short, it’s the sort of indie movie that, well, gives indie movies a good...

As X-Men: First Class arrives in UK cinemas, James provides a handy guide to the film’s roster of heroes and villains, and when they first appeared...
Picture the scene. You've got into the earliest possible screening of this summer's latest Marvel movie blockbuster, X-Men: First Class. You've re-watched the entire trilogy to bring yourself up to date. Nothing can stop you from enjoying what is, by many accounts, the best X-Men film so far.
And yet, as the film unfolds, you begin to wonder what's going on. These aren't the X-Men of your youth, neither the 90s cartoon, nor the movies of the last decade. There's no Cyclops, no Jean, no Rogue. No Wolverine! You'd even settle for a glimpse of Halle Berry or Vinnie Jones.
Your brow begins to sweat. "Who are these second-raters," you cry out, disturbing those seated around you, "and what have they done with the real X-Men?...

As many may have noticed in the recent trailers for Matthew Vaughn’s X-men: First Class (here and here) and news bits, there’s a few continuity issues fans have been upset about. One of these include Hank McCoy/Beast (Nicholas Hoult) mutating in this film, but shows his character in human form (played by Steve Bacic) in X2: X-men United. Singer was able to answer some questions by the fans on the Official Facebook Page regarding these issues. “We did our best to maintain continuity with the other films. But as sometimes happens for the sake of telling the most compelling story possible, we made a few concessions,” he said.
Some the issues aren’t what would be seen a big problems, and could easily be worked around. For example: It could always be assumed that Beast was using a hologram projector during that brief screen time he had in X2.

With First Class set to introduce audiences to a new generation of mutants, we ask who’d make the cut for the dream X-Men team?
When Professor Charles Xavier first established a team of ragtag mutants, there were only five of them to worry about: Cyclops, Jean Grey/Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast and Iceman. In the beginning, it was easy to keep up with them, but that was in 1963 and, over the decades, times have changed.
As more and more characters have been introduced, the game of 'who's who?' has become increasingly difficult. There are literally hundreds of heroes (and villains) who feature regularly, as well as a plethora of secondary characters, who only appear now and then. And that's before you even consider those characters we've only come to know through alternate realities and multiple timelines.
And even if you only know the X-Men because of Fox's foray into X-movies,...

Aussie director John V. Soto got in touch with us this evening to give us the lowdown on release plans for his horror feature Needle (we last spoke with him in October just prior to the flick’s Stateside debut at Screamfest La).
According to Soto, who previously co-directed the flick Crush with Jeff Gerritsen, North American rights for Needle (which was awarded the ‘Skully’ for Best Makeup at Screamfest La 2010) have been acquired by Grindstone Entertainment Group, LLC, who will release the feature through Lionsgate Home Entertainment, while Shochiku has picked up the distribution rights for Japan.
Says Soto, “Apart from wanting to make a cool horror film, it has always been a goal of mine to make a movie good enough to be released in North America through Lionsgate, who are genre specialists, so this is pretty exciting.”

John V. Soto’s Needle has won Best Supporting Actress (Jessica Marais), Best Cinematography and Best Special Effects at the British Horror Film Festival.
“Our UK Premiere went really well. The crowd loved the film and I was excited for Needle to have so many nominations. To actually win an award, let alone three, against such tough competition, is very gratifying and testament to the long hours and hard work put in by our cast and crew,” said Soto.
The cinematography was in charge of Dop Stephen Windon, and the special effects were done by Cutting Edge and Meg.
Needle has also won a Golden Skull at Screamfest in Los Angeles. It was shot in Perth and features Marais, Michael Dorman, Trilby Glover, Tahyna Tozzi, Travis Fimmel, Ben Mendelsohn, Khan Chittenden, John Jarratt and Jane Badler.

Director Matthew Vaughn just started shooting X-Men: First Class last week and already set photos have made their way online. A prequel to the X-Men trilogy, First Class is set in the 1960s and follows a young Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), a.k.a. Professor X, and the rift that grows between him and fellow mutant Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender), a.k.a. Magneto. X-MenFilms reports that the early scenes involved

The other early scenes apparently involve January Jones as Emma Frost. "Mad Men" beauty January Jones has shown off the glamorous side of Emma Frost. Spotted getting into her mutant telepath character on the set of "X-Men: First Class", the 32-year-old rocked an all-white costume as she donned knee-high boots, mini swing coat, gloves and Russian fur hat.
Inf Daily has shared the photos of the "We Are Marshall" actress while she was wandering around the set and sitting inside a helicopter during filming in the Buckinghamshire countryside. In between takes, she was seen covering her short costume with an ankle-length puffy jacket and replacing the white boots with a colorful pair.
January takes over the role of Emma Frost from Tahyna Tozzi, who portrayed the character in 2009 film "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". She has been added to the cast ensemble that includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Rose Byrne, Nicholas Hoult and Lucas Till.

Now that the giant cast is in place, the first images from the set of X-Men: First Class are starting to creep online – beginning with unofficial shots of January Jones all dressed up as Emma Frost. As you can see from the image (more can be found over at Inf Daily), Jones is all decked out in classic Frost attire, complete with white skirt, white boots and a Russian hat. This is what they'd call her "White Queen" attire, and it's very much in line with how she appeared in the comics. Frost is a character we haven't seen much of yet on screen, with the exception of the young girl (Tahyna Tozzi) who played her briefly in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. She's a mutant who has the power of telepathy (meaning she can read people's minds), and she's also one of the sexiest...

And still the casting news for X-Men: First Class keeps coming. This time, the new face of Emma Frost has just been revealed, amongst others…
They're just doing this to make us look silly now. On Monday, we ventured that the casting announcements for X-Men First Class are likely to have come to an end, with the news that Jason Flemyng and Rose Byrne had joined the cast. In less than 24 hours, therefore, in came the next announcement, as Oliver Platt was signed up to play The Man In Black. And now?
Yup, you've guessed it. Yet more casting news for the film. This time it's the role of Emma Frost that's been cast. Frost did appear very briefly in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where Tahyna Tozzi played a younger version of the character. In First Class, however, Variety is reporting that January Jones has been signed up to the role.

Here's the reason why I decided to rent this Australian film: the DVD artwork which features the lovely Tahyna Tozzi. Speaking about the plot, Dean O'Flaherty's Beautiful is not the most original thriller set in suburbia that one will see. With that said, the only good thing about this film is definitely the cast's performance.
While the film was shot in Adelaide, the story takes place in an Australian suburb called Sunshine Hills. Behind its veneer of perfection, the town is shaken by three teenage girls' mysterious disappearance. Besides, the prime suspects are the owners (Asher Keddie and Socratis Otto) of the house number 46 to be behind these abductions.
After she had broken up with her boyfriend, Suzy (Tahyna Tozzi), the girl-next-door of every boy's dreams, persuades Daniel (Sebastian Gregory), a fourteen-year old boy and also her neighbour, to uncover the truth for her. Obviously, Suzy expects Daniel to do all the legwork,...

Long before David Lynch’s brilliantly subversive Blue Velvet (the trend-setting and utterly unforgettable intro of which you can see here) once again turned the suburban thriller genre on its (severed) ear, the idea of suburban disdain and despair bubbling under an all-too-idyllic surface had been done to death, and beyond. Most film goers will unrelentingly cite 1999's (has it been that long?) American Beauty, which kicked off a trend of dark-side-of-suburbia dramedies every bit as persistent as the slacker-hitmen permanently etched into public consciousness by Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and the imitators that followed. Thumbsucker, The Chumscrubber, Little Children, the list goes on and on, with a few choice flicks bucking the trend and updating the already ambitious but admittedly dated template of Beauty.
