Director Peter Segal is not a household name, and to hear him tell it, that’s by design. But the 56-year-old Hollywood veteran is one of the directors most responsible for the evolution of movie comedies over the past two decades, with a seemingly preternatural sense of what moviegoers want. Segal’s films, which include a couple of cult classics and some of Adam Sandler’s biggest hits, have grossed more than $1 billion wordwide, the majority grossing more than $100 million each.
Segal’s latest film, “Second Act,” stars Jennifer Lopez and hits theaters Dec. 21.

He stepped up to direct after winning an Oscar for Visual Effects for his work on Raiders Of The Lost Ark and also did the visual effects on such blockbusters as the original Star Wars trilogy, Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, and The Rocketeer.
Johnston is developing the sci-fi thriller Extinction for Good Universe and Gotti: In The Shadow Of My Father for Relativity.

Resolution, the talent agency founded by former ICM leader Jeff Berg, has lost another top agent, according to several sources. Steve Alexander, whose clients include David Duchovny and Sela Ward, exited abruptly this week, following on the heels of recent defections in COO Jeff Franklin and television literary agent Dennis Kim. Adam Kanter and Martin Spencer, whom Berg recruited to Resolution from CAA, departed for Paradigm earlier this year. List Hollywood's 100 Favorite Films Berg did not respond to a request for comment. Alexander is said to be headed to ICM Partners, though neither he nor an ICM spokesperson responded

Exclusive: Director Joe Johnston has signed with Wme for representation. Johnston had been in play since agents Martin Spencer and Adam Kanter left Resolution to go to Paradigm. He had been with CAA with Kanter for a long time, before the agent made the move to Resolution and Johnston went with him. This is a big get for Wme. Johnston’s hits include October Sky, Captain America: The First Avenger, Jurassic Park III, Jumanji and Honey I Shrunk The Kids. He is currently developing the high-concept sci-fi thriller Extinction by Spenser Cohen with Mandeville and Good Universe. His next film, Not Safe For Work, is set at Universal. Johnston continues to be lawyered by Gang, Tyre, Ramer & Brown.

Representatives for CAA and Paradigm did not immediately respond to TheWrap's late-night requests for comment. Also read: Adam Kanter, Martin Spencer Join Paradigm; Clients to Follow From Resolution It remains unclear which clients would follow Astbury to his next agency. At Paradigm, the well-respected dealmaker represented screenwriters Jon Spaihts (“Prometheus”), Bill Dubuque (“The Judge”), Ernie Cline (“Ready Player One”), Bert Royal (“Easy A”), Jamie Linden (“Dear John”), Patrick Lussier (“Terminator: Genesis”) and David McKenna (“American History X”) as well as “Hitman” director.

As Deadline reported last Friday, Paradigm has confirmed that agents Adam Kanter and Martin Spencer have joined the agency after their abrupt exits from Resolution. Word had raced last week that this was happening, as the two agents did not want to take paycuts from their low-seven-figure salaries. The two joined Jeff Berg last year shortly after he left ICM to launch Resolution, and those agents came from CAA. At Paradigm, they should feel right at home alongside former CAA cohorts Bob Bookman, Ken Stovitz, Rand Holston and most recently Manny Nunez. Related: Resolution Agents Martin Spencer, Adam Kanter Exiting; Paradigm Next Stop? So now, the big question is which clients will join them in the move. Adam Kanter and Martin Spencer have joined Paradigm, effective immediately. The duo recently left Jeff Berg's agency Resolution after previously working together at CAA, as TheWrap first reported. An individual familiar with their exit told TheWrap that Kanter and Spencer were asked to renegotiate their contracts and they refused. Also read: Talent Agents Adam Kanter, Martin Spencer Exit Resolution (Exclusive) “Adam and Martin are excellent agents with outstanding clients, taste and relationships and we are excited to have them join Paradigm,” said Sam Gores, chairman and CEO of Paradigm. “Their familiarity and cohesive working relationships with many of our agents will allow them.

Adam Kanter and Martin Spencer have joined Paradigm effective immediately, the agency announced Thursday. The duo were previously at Resolution, the start-up agency founded by Jeff Berg. Before that, Kanter and Spencer were at CAA, and their hires at Resolution were considered a big deal. However, the pair came with a high pricetag and, according to sources, when they were recently asked to take cuts in pay, decided it was time to move. It is unclear which clients will move with them to Paradigm this stage. Kanter repped lit talents such as director Simon West and writer Babaloot Mandel

Breaking: Even as Jeff Berg was locking down an investment in the agency this week from Beijing-based Bison Capital, rumors raced that other less desirable shakeups were about to happen. We are hearing that veteran motion picture agents Adam Kanter and Martin Spencer, longtime CAA agents who left to join Resolution last year, were escorted out of Resolution headquarters tonight and likely are on their way to Paradigm. Each of the agents brought key clients with them — Kanter brought Doug Liman and Pete Segal, only to see them leave. This is the hard part of trying to launch a talent agency in a most competitive climate, luring agents in as you build enough clientele to enable packaging. It tests client loyalties. I hear they were asked to take pay cuts and didn’t want to. More coming as I hear more about a developing situation. Related: Director Doug Liman Returns...

Talent agents Adam Kanter and Martin Spencer have left Resolution, an individual with knowledge of the situation has told TheWrap. Kanter did not respond to TheWrap's request for comment and denied he was leaving the agency earlier this week. Former ICM chairman Jeff Berg launched Resolution in January 2013, and Kanter and Spencer were two of his highest-profile hires after the duo left CAA. At the time, Berg said that the duo would play ”a key role in the development of our new agency.” Also read: Two CAA Veterans Join Jeff Berg at Resolution It is not immediately clear what led to Kanter and Spencer's.

Exclusive: Doug Liman has signed with CAA. Liman had followed his longtime agent Adam Kanter to Resolution, but has returned to the CAA fold. Liman, who left his TV business at CAA, will be repped in all areas. The helmer, whose big credits include Mr. And Mrs. Smith, most recently completed Edge Of Tomorrow, the science fiction film for Warner Bros that stars Tom Cruise. He’s next committed to direct the recently retitled Sony Pictures historical film The Summit, which is slated to begin production in mid-March. That is the Sheldon Turner-scripted story of George Mallory, the famous British mountaineer who rallied a nation with his attempts to conquer Everest before his Australian rival George Finch. This has gone a couple different ways in casting, but now it looks like Tom Hardy might well play Mallory (he was first choice but temporarily dropped due to scheduling) and that Luke Evans might play Finch.

Exclusive: Wme has just signed Peter Segal and his Callahan Filmworks producing partner Michael Ewing. The duo has been on the move lately. They left CAA in April to rejoin their longtime agent Adam Kanter at upstart agency Resolution. Now they have moved again. Segal most recently helmed the Warner Bros comedy Grudge Match, which stars Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone as former boxers who get in the ring one last time to settle a long dispute. Callahan Filmworks produced with Bill Gerber. Segal’s comedy credits include Tommy Boy, The Longest Yard, 50 First Dates, Anger Management and Get Smart, so it’s a good get for Wme. Segal is still repped by attorney Lawrence Rose.

Exclusive: Millennium Films has acquired Criminal, a spec script by Douglas Cook & David Weisberg, who are best known for The Rock. This one is an action movie about the right man in the wrong body. In a last-ditch effort to stop a diabolical plot, a dead CIA operative’s memories, secrets and skills are implanted into an unpredictable and dangerous prison inmate in hopes that he will complete the operative’s mission. Jc Spink, Chris Bender and Mark Gill are producing. Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, John Thompson, Christa Campbell, Lati Grobman, Christine Crow and Jake Weiner are executive producers. Millennium is giving this one the fast-track treatment it gave Olympus Has Fallen, which went from script acquisition to screen in 13 months. That $70 million budget film has crossed the $160 million global gross mark with enough territories ahead to feel optimistic it will cross $200 million on the Antoine Fuqua-directed Gerard Butler-starrer.

It used to be well known in Hollywood: no one ever leaves CAA voluntarily. Why would they? There's nowhere to go but down from from the biggest agency in town. Segal is currently in post-production at Warner Bros on Grudge Match, the comedy that stars Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone as former boxers who get in the ring one last time to settle a long dispute. Segal directed it and he and Ewing are among its producers. The cumulative grosses of Segal’s films, including The Longest Yard, 50 First Dates, Anger Management and Get Smart, put him over $1 billion, but the one I’ll always treasure most is Tommy Boy, which best brought Chris Farley’s unique charm and physical comedy talents to the big screen. He just directed his script I, Frankenstein for Lakeshore with Lionsgate distributing, and is adapting the Laini Taylor novel Daughter Of Smoke And Bone for Universal and producer Joe Roth. This follows the move of Doug Liman to Resolution and Paranormal Activity helmer Oren Peli to Wme in the wake of Spencer and Adam Kanter’s exits for Resolution. The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

[1] Last year saw the debut of The Viewfinder List [2], which aims to do for aspiring filmmakers what The Black List does for screenwriters. Compiled from a poll of "studio executives, producers, and creatives," The Viewfinder List reflects the most-liked shorts, commercials, and/or music videos of the year. The inaugural list in 2010 included such up-and-comers as Patrick Jean, whose Pixels is due out in 2013, 47 Ronin director Carl Erik Rinsch, and, um, Alejandro González Iñárritu. This year's list has Dan Trachtenberg's Portal: No Escape on top, along with a few other videos you may recognize if you've been paying attention to /Film for the past year. Or even if you haven't -- that adorable Super Bowl Volkswagen ad with the little Darth Vader kid also made the cut, as did Chris Marrs Piliero's video for The Black Keys. Check out the full 2011 Viewfinder List -- with video! -- after the jump.

For the seventh annual year a list of the top unproduced screenplays written in the past 12 calendar months has been made. The Black List is the most recognized and celebritized compilation for screenwriters and unknown movie ideas to be heard. While some prior Black List scripts have gone on to be made (like Juno or 500 Days of Summer), most scripts do not. However, what being on The Black List can do is to give a big push of credibility to a screenwriter hoping to carve out a career in Hollywood.
The Black List recepients are chosen by a committee of 300 individuals working in Hollywood: agents, writers, producers, managers and the like. They read the screenplays that float around the showbiz ecosystem; some are bought and are already in development while others are still seeing the interest of talent of financial backers.

The 2011 Black List has arrived online and there are a bunch of the hottest scripts in Hollywood. Some have already been picked up by studios, while most are still unproduced. Here is the press release: The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.
This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.
All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein. The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2011 affiliations.
It has been said many times, but it's worth repeating:
The Black List is not a "best of" list. It is, at best, a "most liked" list.

[1] Each December since 2004, studio executive Franklin Leonard has compiled the best unproduced screenplays of the year, as voted by hundreds of execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year's list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman. It should be noted that the headline is somewhat misleading -- some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though according to Leonard none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011.
