About a year and a half ago, the producers of Celebrity Big Brother asked Mark McGrath to stage a fake recording session so they could shoot a quick sizzle reel of him before the reality show began filming. But when Sugar Ray guitarist Rodney Sheppard arrived at the studio, he had the seed of a song idea he wanted to try out. “We started building on it and basically finished a song called ‘Highest Tree,’” says McGrath. “Ironically, the sizzle reel turned into a real session.”

“I want to tell you something about me that you might not know,” began a post by Everclear’s Art Alexakis earlier this week. In the startling statement, Alexakis, 56, announced he had been diagnosed several years ago with multiple sclerosis, but had decided to finally go public with the news.
The daunting disease disables the central nervous system by attacking the coating around its nerve fibers, leading to fatigue, walking issues, vision problems and more. Yet his condition is clearly not slowing Alexakis down. He’s in the final stages...

Despite being a coach on all 13 seasons of “The Voice” to date, Adam Levine has only won three times. The most recent of these was in season 9 when he took Jordan Smith to the winner’s circle (his others wins were in season 1 with Javier Colon and season 5 with Tessanne Chin). This season, he was only able to choose one of the three artists to take to the Top 12, which will perform live on April 23.
After America voted for Sharane Calister and Rayshun Lamarr he had to pick his third artist from the four remaining on his team. In the end, he opted for Jackie Verna over Mia Boostrom, Drew Cole and Reid Umstattd.
We asked you which of the three artists that didn’t make the grade with Levine was the most deserving to move on to the live shows. As of this writing, Boostrom has a solid lead...

As a coach on season 14 of “The Voice,” Adam Levine has struggled to put together a team that could finally win him a fourth title. However, with the decision to let America choose two of the three artists that he would take to the Top 12, his life was made a little easier. After Sharane Calister and Rayshun Lamarr won the two public votes, Levine had to choose between his four remaining artists. In the end, he opted for Jackie Verna over Mia Boostrom, Drew Cole and Reid Umstattd.

Although Adam Levine has been a coach on the “The Voice” since it started in 2011, he has won only three of the previous 13 seasons. And, according to our readers, a fourth win is likely to elude Levine in the current season 14.
They think that he has a far weaker team than Shelton, returning coach Alicia Keys and rookie Kelly Clarkson heading into the live round, which kicks off on April 16. Levine’s six artists earned only a combined 10 chair turns during the blind auditions. Compare that to the rosters of the other coaches: Keys (17 turns), Shelton (15 turns) and Clarkson (11 turns).
We have compiled a power ranking of the contestants now on Team Adam Levine. These would-be winners are listed from best to worst based on: their reception in the knockouts, battles and blind auditions; the resulting sales of their tracks on iTunes; and the votes of viewers like you.

Adam Levine has the weakest team among the four coaches on season 14 of “The Voice” as the live round kicks off on April 16. He had gone into the knockout round, which just ended with eight artists who had merited a mere 13 chair turns among them at the blind auditions. Over the course of the three knockout episodes, Levine had to winnow them down to five picks. He also picked up a steal from another coach when that artist lost their battle.
Which of the six artists on his team heading into the Top 24 round do you think could go all the way and win season 14 of “The Voice”?

While Adam Levine has been with the “The Voice” since it began in 2011, he has won only three of the previous 13 seasons (his long-time rival, Blake Shelton has six victories). According to our readers, that elusive fourth win is likely to elude Levine in the current season 14. They think that he and Shelton have far weaker teams than returning coach Alicia Keys and rookie Kelly Clarkson heading into the knockout round, which kicks off on April 2.
Levine’s eight artists earned a combined 13 chair turns during the blind auditions. He chose six of these during the blind auditions while the other two were steals from coaches who went with the competing artists in the battle round.
Levine paired up his original dozen artists against each other in six battles. The winners of these match-ups — Mia Boostrom, Drew Cole, Gary Edwards, Rayshun Lamarr, Reid Umstattd and Jackie Verna — move on to the knockout round.

The battle round of “The Voice” continues on March 26 with the third of four episodes. The first two episodes on March 19 and 20 were dominated by battles between artists coached by rookie Kelly Clarkson and the returning Alicia Keys. This means the final two installments will be given over primarily to those contestants on the teams of Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, who have been with the show since the start.
Both Levine and Shelton have pitted only four of his dozen artists against each other in the first two battle rounds of “The Voice.” That leaves them with eight apiece to pair up in these final two shows devoted to the battles. We have done some digging and learned that one of Levine’s four remaining pairings pits Miya Bass against Drew Cole. Adam Levine has pitted only four of his dozen artists against each other in the first two battle rounds of “The Voice” on March 19 and 20. Two of them — Rayshun Lamarr and Reid Umstattd — were his picks to move on to the knockout round. While Tish Haynes Keys lost to Lamarr, she was rescued by Clarkson. Levine’s other battle loser, Davison, saw his time on “The Voice” come to an end.
Levine has used both of his steals, picking up Jackie Foster at the end of Battle 1 when Kelly Clarkson went for D.R. King instead after their duet on Harry Styles‘ “Sign of the Times.” Likewise, he offered Jordyn Simone a lifeline at the end of Battle 2 when Alicia Keys dropped him in favor of Kelsea Johnson after their duet on the En Vogue hit “Don’t Let Go (Love).”

Adam Levine has been a coach on every season of “The Voice” and has mentored three of the first 13 winners of this reality competition series. The most recent of these was in season 9 when he took Jordan Smith to the winner’s circle (his others wins were in season 1 with Javier Colon and season 5 with Tessanne Chin). He came tantalizing close to tasting victory last fall but his artist, Addison Agen, had to settle for second place. Levine’s rival, Blake Shelton, got win #6 as Chloe Kohanski claimed victory.
Levine is looking for revenge on Shelton this season and has assembled a strong team of 12 artists to take into battle. We have compiled power rankings of the 12 members of Team Adam Levine. This listing from best to worst is based on their performances in the blind auditions as well as the resulting sales of their tracks on iTunes and the votes of viewers like you.

The third album has long been seen as a difficult hurdle for a band/artist to successfully clear. Usually having been together for years before recording a debut and therefore have enough material to fill the first couple with tried and tested, great songs. When it comes to record number three, the well is often dry. The following is ten examples of a big middle finger to the dreaded, “third album curse”.
There already exists a million articles in cyberspace on such wonderful third albums like ‘III’ by Led Zeppelin, ‘Master Of Puppets’ by Metallica, ‘Reign In Blood’ by Slayer, ‘Ok Computer’ by Radiohead etc, so please appreciate my slight deviation from the usual suspects. Maybe you will discover something new with the selections I have made. Also, please feel free to comment and leave suggestions of your own, I welcome your opinions and, I will maybe gain some musical education too.

This news would've broken some hearts in 1997: Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath married longtime sweetheart Carin Kingsland on Monday morning in Southern California.
"After 18 years of breakups, makeups, beautiful twins and an unwavering love that provided some pretty damn good song lyrics, we are happy to announce that we are finally married!" McGrath tells People.com.
The website also reports the couple's 2-year-old twins Lydon and Hartley were the ceremony's ring bearer and flower girl, respectively. About 60 friends and family members were in attendance. McGrath proposed to Kingsland back in 2009 at L.A.'s the Viper Room, the site of their first meeting in 1994.
Sugar Ray remains best known for their late '90s hits "Fly," "Every Morning" and "Someday." Their most recent album, "Music for Cougars," was released in 2009 and they recently completed a U.S. tour with fellow nostalgia acts Everclear, Lit, Gin Blossoms and Marcy Playground.

Now that their comeback has been officially sanctioned by Mother Monster herself, No Doubt should not have a problem reclaiming the top of the charts.
The first single, “Settle Down,” from their highly anticipated sixth album, Push and Shove, will be released on July 16 with the album dropping just two short months later, on September 25. To refresh your memory, it’s been almost 11 years since the band released their last studio album, Rock Steady, and in the time since, they've released a greatest hits album, lead singer Gwen Stefani was sweetly inescapable as she embarked on a massively successful solo career and bassist Tony Kanal produced hits for artists including Pink, Shontelle and even Gwen. The new video for "The Rifle's Spiral," the latest single from The Shins' recent album "Port of Marrow," premiered in 3D on the Nintendo 3Ds and now be seen in regular ol' 2D. The stop-motion clip was directed by veteran animator Jamie Caliri, who was responsible for memorable '90s clips for Morphine and Marcy Playground, and also created the opening credits for "The United States of Tara." In a desolate land, a lone lady magician performs some nifty tricks (sorry -- illusions) with a cooperative rabbit in front of an empty house. Meanwhile, three men in black track her down only to...

The Shins released a music video for their song "The Rifle's Spiral" off their latest album, Port of Morrow. The video was concepualized by Emmy-winning director Jamie Caliri and tells the story of a battle between good and evil magicians through stop-motion animation.
"The Rifle's Spiral" features a lone musician, three sketchy men and a transformative, and adorable, bunny. Each of the characters assume distinct personalities and mannerisms despite their seemingly restrictive wooden, clay and paper bodies as they battle it out in the name of magic.
Caliri was able to interpret "The Rifle's Spiral" how he pleased. This creative liberty occasionally is a bit too literal, but overall allowed for a story of trickery, deception and whimsy to prevail.
"The Rifle's Spiral" works like an epic as a song alone; the borderline grand pop drums carry it, with James Mercer's vocals almost telling the folklore of the magicians themselves.

Do not be alarmed. You have not been transported through a wormhole back to 1999... but it might feel like it. April 2012 is looking an awful lot like the 1990s. Whether you're at the movies, watching TV, or picking out your clothes, there's a definite resurgence of '90s nostalgia. For those of us who still remember the '90s like it was yesterday, it's a little weird that it's also, well, today.
First of all, there's the fact that James Van Der Beek is back on television. "Don't Trust The B---- in Apartment 23" premieres this Wednesday, April 11. In the ABC comedy, Van Der Beek plays a fictional version of himself -- a version that wears "Dawson's Creek" flannel and blasts Paula Cole's "I Don't Want To Wait" in order to seduce women.

Andy Warhol said everyone gets 15 minutes of fame, but if you ask one-hit wonders, they'll say you're lucky to get 3 minutes and 30 seconds.
Before reality TV started turning ordinary folks into stars, there was no faster path to the peak of celebrity -- and no more direct route back to the depths of obscurity -- than being a one-hit wonder.
Granted, there are probably good reasons why folks like Los Del Rio, the two middle-aged Spanish guys who took "Macarena" to No. 1 in 1996, never followed up their big hit, and the world was surely okay with making C.W. McCall's 1976 hit "Convoy" the only No. 1 song dedicated to Cb radio.
But we come here to praise one-hit wonders, not to bury them. For every one-and-done novelty like "Disco Duck" by Rick Dees or annoyingly catchy and cloying tune like Charlene's 1983 smash "I've Never Been To Me," there is a stone-cold...

But we come here to praise one-hit wonders, not to bury them. For every one-and-done novelty like "Disco Duck" by Rick Dees or annoyingly catchy and cloying tune like Charlene's 1983 smash "I've Never Been To Me," there is a stone-cold...

Really, you should be listening to music every day, but thanks to Twitter, Monday has become the best day of the week to discover new songs, show some love to the tune currently dominating your iPod playlist and quietly judge the listening habits of your closest friends. Yes, it's #MusicMonday, one of Twitter's most enduring trending topics. Hence "MTV News' #MusicMonday," a weekly look at the songs we are currently crushing on.
This week, enjoy a fine slice of Cake.
There was a lot of terrible music generated in the wake of the fall of grunge in the '90s, but one of the most refreshing aspects of that era was that just about anything could become a hit. In fact, a lot of times it felt like the weirder a band or a song was, the more likely it was for them to score a huge hit. This was...

A lot of travelers have been stuck in a lot of airports over the past few days as airlines struggle to right themselves after airport shutdowns and canceled fights thanks to the big blizzard. All over the country, people are spending time in terminals waiting to win the standby lottery and drinking in those surreal bars stuck between Starbucks and Hudson News. Those hours seem to stretch out interminably. Indeed, if purgatory existed, it would probably look and feel a lot like O'Hare. For the appropriate soundtrack to a bizarre experience, we turn to Marcy Playground.
A strange, druggy little trio from New York, Marcy Playground released their debut album in early 1997 to a mostly apathetic rock landscape that was otherwise distracted by the Wallflowers, the Verve Pipe, Third Eye blind and the rise of ska. But at some point in the summer of '97, the band's single "Sex and...

There's no secret that the last season of "The Celebrity Apprentice" — which saw Bret Michaels score the victory over a truly excellent field — was one of the most fun shows on television. And it's also no secret that the current iteration of "The Apprentice" (which does not feature any famous people, just a bunch of down-on-their-luck business folk) is not very good at all (ratings have been roundly bad). But according to reports from Entertainment Weekly, a new season of "The Celebrity Apprentice" is just around the corner, and rumor has it that the cast will include La Toya Jackson, former "The View" co-host Star Jones and "Don't Forget the Lyrics" host Mark McGrath.
Even though there could be as many as nine more names added to the roster, fans should already be salivating, as all three of those people are wildly entertaining on TV. McGrath is an especially awesome case,...

Though she spent the bulk of 2009 staying under the radar following the unfortunate fight with Chris Brown in February, Rihanna has been an absolute flurry of activity since the release of her fourth album Rated R. Since then, she has been on a killer promotional push, starred in a handful of music videos (some of the best produced all year) and hit the road with Ke$ha. Somewhere in there, she found the time to record a new album, which will be hitting stores on November 2. She already has a new single ("Only Girl (In the World)," which premiered on Ryan Seacrest's radio show this morning) and a title, which she said will be Loud.
"I made sure not to let you down with my music!" she said during a chat on an official fan site over the weekend. "You guys are always defending me, so now you've got...

NME reports that The Sex Pistols have launched their own perfume: The Sex Pistols scent, which comes in packaging based on their ‘God Save The Queen’ single artwork, is currently available in France, and launches in selected shops in the Us on September 10. It is not clear yet when it will reach the UK. The band have not commented on their latest release, but Live Nation Merchandise insisted they were “closely involved” with the launch. There are also plans to launch a ‘Never Mind The Bollocks’ soap later this year. I smell sex and pi-stols here. (Marcy Playground joke, anyone?). I feel like I should, but I have no problem with this. Hell, you can buy Never Mind the Bollocks t-shirts at Urban Outfitters, so eff it. Why not make a perfume? At least it’s their own product. Bob Dylan did a Victoria’s Secret commercial a few years ago,...

The time has finally come to check in with your old New York City-living, cosmo-drinking, shoe-buying, boyfriend-loving friends from the hit HBO comedy series "Sex and the City." Today marks the release of "Sex and the City 2," the sequel to the 2008 smash that once again checks in with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) as they navigate their way through more relationship drama and glam maintenance in the face of natural aging. This time around, the girls leave their beloved Manhattan for a series of road trips, first to Connecticut and then to Abu Dhabi for an exploration of the desert. Which guy will Carrie choose? Can Samantha survive menopause? Only 146 minutes of time with the ladies will reveal those answers.
One of the highlights of "Sex and the City 2" is the soundtrack, which features music from Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson,...

Whether you know her as Buffy Summers, Daphne Blake or the porn star from "Southland Tales," Sarah Michelle Gellar has carved out a place for herself in pop culture for the last decade. So if you see her today, hand her a Mylar balloon and spank her 33 times, as today is her birthday.
Gellar first made an impression on television audiences during her stint on "All My Children" (for which she won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series). But she really made her greatest impact in 1997 when "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" premiered on the WB. Gellar starred as the titular demon hunter who tried to balance her life as a high school student, her calling as a protector and her relationship with a hunky vampire named Angel. Though never a huge ratings winner, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" became a cult hit and was a career-maker...

With the fading embers of emo, laid-back surf rock, jam bands, prog and whatever Tokio Hotel does all clamoring for attention, the current rock landscape is pretty bizarre. But no era will ever match the oddness of the post-grunge era at the end of the '90s, when pop punk, the beginnings of nü metal and novelty weirdness (Harvey Danger, Marcy Playground and the like) rushed the airwaves for one last blast of Billboard relevance before being pushed out completely by Diddy-fueled hip-hop and boy bands. In the middle of it all were a handful of groups still trading on the grunge sound, including Fuel, who released their breakthrough album Sunburn on this day in 1998.
Originally formed in 1989 (they were called Small the Joy then), the breakout version of Fuel consisted of guitarist Carl Bell, bassist Jeff Abercrombie, drummer Jonathan Mover and singer Brett Scallions. Sunburn struck a balance between alt-rock's two extremes,...

Black balloons, filled with the scent of "Sexy Time," a potent mix of chocolate, condoms, candles, post-coital bed sheets, sweat, nail polish, and lipstick--in short, the smell of a college student's dorm room--filled the lobby of a Parsons auditorium on Friday, sending conference attendees off with a smelly jolt to their own weekends.
It was the climax (sorry) of an extraordinary day in which an international array of speakers gathered in a very fragrant auditorium at Parsons The New School for Design to explore the idea of using scent as a medium for design.
Organized by Paola Antonelli, senior design curator at Moma, Jamer Hunt, chair of Urban and Transdisciplinary Design at Parsons, and Laetitia Wolff, founder of future flair, the symposium, called "Headspace, on Scent as Design," brought together panelists from Iff (International Flavors & Fragrances Inc.), product designers, researchers, neurobiologists, architects, and design critics for a day-long investigation of...

Remember when radio was really, really weird? In the late 1990s, there was a gap between the dominant forces in modern rock. Grunge had sputtered but the nü metal movement had yet to take hold, which left about a three year window where modern rock radio was just bizarre. Odd tunes like Marcy Playground's "Sex and Candy," Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta," Nada Surf's "Popular" and Primitive Radio Gods' "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand" became inescapable radio staples, partially because they were great songs but also because nobody really knew what else to do. It was a wild time, because you never knew what was going to break out. It seemed like anything could become a hit, and as a result, the radio world felt a little more open-minded a free-wheeling for a time.

Marcy Playground at B. B. King Blues Club (9/28)
"Sex and Candy" is far from being the best song by Marcy Playground, yet it is the only one that most people know. In 1997, when the band released its first album, it was somehow decided that a song with "sex" in the title deserved relentless radio play, which was fine, because it's a good song. However, when the alternative rock trio released its follow-up album, Shapeshifter, despite it being superior to their previous release, there was no love from the radio. Over ten years and four albums later this Minneapolis-based group continues to hover under the airwave radar.

Viewers of HBO's Southern Gothic vampire drama True Blood were likely shocked last week when teenage vampire Jessica Hamby nearly walked away with the series when she sauntered languidly into Merlotte's in search of something to crave her hunger, both physically and emotionally. Set to the haunting strain of Marcy Playground's "Sex and Candy," the scene not only brought Jessica to the forefront of the talented ensemble cast but memorably established the flame-haired actress who plays her, Brooklyn-born newcomer Deborah Ann Woll, as a major force to be reckoned with in the acting community. I had the chance to catch up with the incandescent Deborah Ann Woll yesterday, where we talked about what's in store for mischievous teenage vampire Jessica Hamby, her character's star-crossed romance with Jim Parrack's Hoyt Fortenberry, and what's coming up for Jessica on Season Two of True Blood. So get your fangs ready, pour...

"And then there she was/Like double cherry pie..." I had the opportunity to watch the first four episodes of Season Two of True Blood a few weeks back but I've been rewatching the episodes as they're airing on HBO so that I don't forget any of the plot twists. I don't know about you but I thought that last night's episode of True Blood ("Scratches"), written by Raelle Tucker and directed by Scott Winant, was the best of the season so far. It's a good thing I did tune in again as it contained one of my favorite scenes of the first four episodes, the sultry entrance of Jessica (the intoxicating Deborah Ann Woll) at Merlotte's to the delicious tune of Marcy Playground's "Sex and Candy," one of the most seductive and memorable sequences to unfold on the series to date. Woll's Jessica is a sight to behold.
