However, his pleasant holiday turns gruesome as peculiar murders plague the city…The manga adaptation of internationally acclaimed author Darren Shan’s Cirque Du Freak continues in this oversize, deluxe omnibus edition!” (Yen Press)
The first collected omnibus of “Cirque Du Freak” ended at a pivotal moment in the development of Darren and his understanding of responsibility tied to his vampiric gifts. Norrin Radd was blasted through a wormhole in Guardians of the Galaxy, but he returns in a new Silver Surfer series.
Donny Cates has been quietly setting himself up for a Silver Surfer book for about a year and a half now. He seeded something as far back as the start of his run on Thanos, and kept it going through Guardians of the Galaxy. And what do you know? It looks like it paid off, as Marvel announced ahead of the release of its June solicitations that Cates and Tradd Moore would be bringing us Silver Surfer: Black.
In "Thanos Wins," the present-day Mad Titan was pulled forward to help his older self fulfill his heart's desire: finish killing everyone so Death would finally like him. Of course, the last being left alive not under control of or allied to Thanos was the Silver Surfer, a...

Even if you're not a big reader of young adult fiction, you may have seen the advertisements for the new Chloë Grace Moretz movie The 5th Wave and suspected that it looks like the kind of movie that was adapted from a Ya franchise. All the elements are there: a post-apocalyptic dystopia, a winsome female protagonist who stands up to become the world's champion, an imperiled younger sibling and the winning combination of light science fiction and teenaged angst. The 5th Wave is the first in a trilogy of books by Rick Yancey about a group of underage rebels fighting off an alien invasion.

A foxy Oscar hopeful is too clever by half in a week that also offers some terrific twisty horror and a strangely anaemic vampire outing
A few years ago, animation fans became (justifiably) alarmed by the ubiquity of CG "digimation", which seemed to be devouring all in its path. Tales of Hollywood studio bosses walking through their animation departments and "switching off the light boxes" seemed like harbingers of a dismally monotheistic future. Yet against the odds the future looks bright; not only has digital king John Lasseter been a flag-waver for Japan's Ghibli studios (Hayao Miyazaki owes him much) and Disney's artistic heritage, we now have an Oscar race that pitches 3D digital animation against "old-fashioned' 2D hand-drawn and even diehard stop-motion animation. Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant (2009) is one of those movies that too easily gets lost in the shuffle, and that has the misfortune of being so like other films before it that it's inevitably compared to those films, deemed weaker than those predecessors and summarily dismissed by critics and moviegoers alike. It's happening -- a lot -- these days in the vampire and fantasy genres, given the box office success of the Twilight films and the high bar of quality set by the Harry Potter films. Cirque du Freak is by no means a lost treasure. In fact, it's okay at best. But were there no Harry Potter or Twilight or (fill in the blank), it probably would have fared far better during its theatrical release last year. It's out now on DVD via Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and we're going to give it a fresh look. The film,...

Last Weekend saw Roland Emmerich's global disaster movie 2012 bring in $225million at the box office.
This weekend there is likely to be another series of earth-shaking tremors caused by the stampedes of Twihards to see New Moon, the second film in the Twilight franchise.
It willl be interesting to see its opening ticket sales and how it impacts on 2012's second weekend.
But Chris Weitz (pictured right), director of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, has revealed the public passion for bloodsuckers has taken him completely by surprise.
He thought TV's Buffy show was the stake through the heart of the vampire craze.
He took the reins on New Moon, based on Stephenie Meyer's second vampire romance novel, as brother Paul Weitz started pre-production on Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, an adaptation of the first three novellas in Darren Shan's best-selling teenage vampire saga.

The recent rise in melodramatic teen vampire fare has been interesting to witness. From the golden-hearted sparkling heartthrob in Twilight to the multitude of sappy TV dramas (sans True Blood), the watering down of the classic (and dapper!) “monster” from Eastern Europe has been both sad and alluring. It’s like passing by a car accident between a truckload of Nerf balls and the Munster-mobile.
In the case of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, the Nerf truck totally decimated the poor Munster car. Soft in the middle and tragically predictable, the latest from Paul Weitz (brother to New Moon’s Chris Weitz) is fitting for its target audience, but doesn’t have enough meat for the entire family. For a movie based on a series of books aimed at the young adult genre, the film does a fantastic job of entertaining its core but doesn’t leave much for anybody over 16-years-old.

Our thoughts: Paul Weitz’s “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant” is the beginning of something we may even never get to see. The Vampire’s Assistant is the adaptation of the second book in the Darren Shan saga, Cirque du Freak. The film covers most of the first novel as well as the second. This was probably for the best since in order for audiences to get involved in a vampire series, they need more than just an introduction; they need to see the vampire lifestyle, mythology, and bloodshed taking place. While The Vampire’s Assistant is by no means a very brutal film, it hits all of these elements. If they only focused on the first novel, there would be far less of this. The Vampire’s Assistant on it’s own isn’t a great film as it is actually over all forgettable. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a fairly fun film with a vivid setting and an intriguing fantasy geared atmosphere.

In the past year it feels like the world has been swept up in vampire fever. An HBO series uses blood drinkers to teach us about intolerance, a CW show about teen vamps has been picked up for a full first season, and the unavoidable Twilight franchise is roaring to a sequel with Chris Weitz’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant draws comparison not just by it’s bloodthirsty subject matter, but from the dueling work of brothers in the teen supernatural, Chris and Paul Weitz. The latter cut his teeth with the raunchy comedy American Pie before a series of average dramas leading up to this departure and bland career blunder.
A half hour in I was wishing for Edward’s brooding demeanor over Darren the Assistant, a dull, timid character that becomes half-vampire and half-boring.

It’s a difficult tightrope to walk, making a film adaptation of a book, especially if the book is well-loved. On one hand, if you change the book’s content too much, you run the risk of angering the fans who will turn on you for all the differences between the story in their heads and the one you’ve committed to film. On the other hand, if you don’t alter the story enough so that a few hundred pages’ worth of information gets crammed properly into 90 minutes of movie, those who have not read the book(s) will not understand what is going on or why things are happening, and thus will not be able to follow the story thoroughly. I am sorry to say that Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant does not walk that tightrope very well and, by the third act, tumbles clumsily into the safety net below.

Universal Pictures' Cirque du Freak :The Vampire's Assistant movie brought action and an ok plot . It stars: John C. Reilly, Ken Watanabe, Josh Hutcherson, Chris Massoglia, Ray Stevenson, Patrick Fugit, Orlando Jones, Willem Dafoe, and Salma Hayek. Although the storyline/plot left something to be desired, "Cirque du Freak :The Vampire's Assistant" did deliver more action than I had originally expected it to. The movie focused around character , Darren Shan who is best friends with a guy named Steve. They eventually end up going to a "Cirque du Freak" show that changes young Darren's life forever.

The most blood-curling aspect of Paul Weitz’s Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant is that this anemic adaptation of a popular children’s book series is built up as the first in series of post-pubescent vampire films. Imagine Harry Potter on Valium and feel the joy. So let’s do everyone a favor and hammer a stake through this abomination’s heart before it’s too late.
One of the major coagulating problems here is that Chris Massoglia, the Prince of Bland, stars as Darren Shan, a goody-goody teener with a penchant for spiders and high grades.

I was pretty surprised to learn after I saw the movie that Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant is an adaptation of three novels. Three! I was surprised, not because the movie is focused and concise (on the contrary, it’s actually all over the place and drags on and on) but because if I had to take a guess, I would wager that it’s based on only parts of a novel. So why is it that it feels like nothing happens?
The books in question are Cirque du Freak, The Vampire’s Assistant and Tunnels of Blood; the first three in the Saga of Darren Shan series of vampire novels written by Darren Shan about Darren Shan (oy), the boy who would become a half-vampire personal assistant to a vampire, involving him in centuries-old civil war between two bloodsucking factions. Saw VI Studio: Lionsgate Rated: R for sequences of grisly bloody violence, torture and language. Starring: Costas Mandylor, Mark Rolston, Betsy Russell, Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith Directed by: Kevin Greutert What it’s about: This sixth installment of the popular horror franchise sees Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) continuing the work of the serial killer Jigsaw (Tobin Bell). However, even with a new game targeting a greedy insurance tycoon afoot, there’s more surprises for Hoffman from the police and from beyond the grave of Jigsaw. What I liked: Unlike many critics, I have really enjoyed the Saw franchise, and this film is a worthy successor. If you’re looking for gore and violence, you’ll get plenty of that. But also, if you’re looking for a film that gives more twists and turns in the already complex story arc, you’ll get that as well. Like the other sequels, Saw VI...

Chicago – For everything that Paul Weitz’s “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant” does right, there’s something about the film that just doesn’t work. Cirque du Freak: the Vampire’s Assistant, directed by About A Boy’s Paul Weitz and based on the series of young-adult novels by Darren Shan, is a surprisingly good movie with all the requisite scares, humor, characters and excellent performances (at least by most of the cast) you could want. Its a good time at the movies unencumbered by many of the things which handicapped something with similar subject matter like Twilight. The real trick here is that the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously and in so doing, manages to be fun and entertaining as well as, at points, quite scary.
Going in to this film I was pretty ignorant of the subject matter and its origins, never better illustrated by my wondering why so many teenagers were in the screening of this film during Fantastic Fest. Also, having not read any of the 12 books of the Cirque Du Freak saga,...

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant has the unfortunate fate of arriving at the height of the vampire resurgence. I fear a lot of potential movie goers will dismiss it as part of the wave, as a major studio (Universal) trying to rush an adaptation of a very popular young-adult book franchise in an attempt to capitalize on the Twilight demographic. And while I understand that sentiment, in this particular case it's a shame, because Paul Weitz' film stands tall whether it was made inside or outside this temporary rise in the vamp popularity. Remove the cynical marketing climate and The Vampire's Assistant is a charming, imaginative, and most importantly, very entertaining film for children, teens and adults alike.

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant was one of the Fantastic Fest gala events last month, and demonstrates that we just can't get enough vampire movies at the moment. Though the main character in the book is 12 years old, in the film Darren is 16. He is introduced to a fantastic world of sideshow freaks, vampires and creatures of unknown origins.

It isn’t a surprise any more that studios left and right are nabbing up every young teen book series to put on the fast track to feature film. Harry Potter did wonders for struggling fantasy writers all around the world. Of course, with this level of reactive filmmaking going on, it’s a wonder that any of these adaptations end up culling together enough talent to make anything worth watching.
So, it widens the eyes a bit and makes the smile on my face a little wider when something like Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’S Assistant hits theaters. While not a grand exploration in filmmaking, the film does have much to offer by way of entertainment, and it even allows some time to project a bit of deeper meaning.

Patrick Fugit, Chris Massoglia and Jessica Carlson in Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant
Photo: Universal Pictures Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant is based on the popular young adult fantasy novels written by Darren Shan, and while I'm not sure how rewarding the books are, the filmed adaptation is an insult to audiences everywhere. In lifeless fashion this film doesn't attempt to tell a worthwhile story and instead acts as a precursor to a franchise that will never exist due to the first film's failings. In short, The Vampire's Assistant is a one hour and 48 minute long commercial for The Vampire's Assistant: Part II. They better dust off the shelves at the abandoned franchise library as this one is destined to rest alongside other busted franchise starters such as Eragon and The Golden Compass.

If there's one thing we can't get enough of right now, it's vampires. From Twilight to True Blood to The Vampire Diaries, these bloodthirsty creatures have taken over the media. The stories are magical, the characters are unforgettable, and we can't help but hunger for more vamp goodness to sink our teeth into. But what about a fresh new spin on the genre and how about a vampire story with a twist? Forget about star-crossed lovers and hearts forlorn for a change, and let's add in some humor and adventure with a side of freak show. That's exactly what Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant delivers, and it's insatiable. In Cirque, we follow an innocent young boy's journey to the dark side, where blood-suckers and freaks rule the shadows and mortals dare not intervene...or do they? Based on a popular book series written by Darren Shan, Cirque follows the...

The unwieldy and odd title to Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant should tell you what you need to know about the film that bears its name – it's just not quite right. There are elements of Paul Weitz's film, based on the first two books of a series by Darren Shan, that come together effectively, but the entire film ultimately mistakes being manic for being interesting and being inconsistent for being quirky and eccentric. With a plot that plays like what I imagine 1980s Tim Burton might have attempted with ...Read more at MovieRetriever.com...

There’s always been something removed and artificial about John C. Reilly’s acting; he has a comedian’s instinct for deliberate self-presentation, rather than a tendency to disappear into his roles. That doesn’t seem to have held him back, though, both because he’s generally soulful and genial, and because he’s authentically funny. That, and he often winds up in roles specifically suited to his style. Certainly that calculated posing is the best part of the otherwise middling Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, the would-be franchise-starter for a series of adaptations of Darren Shan’s ...

Leaving an early screening of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant this week, I heard an amazed teenage girl say to her companions, "It's, like, a vampire movie, but it's funny!" As if such a thing weren't possible. But then, the average teen was in kindergarten when Buffy was in its prime, and 80's movies like Fright Night and Once Bitten are ancient history. Funny vampires?! Who knew?
As Peter Hall says in his excellent Cinematical review of Cirque, it's a shame that this particular movie feels as if it were rushed out to take advantage of the current Twilight and True Blood fueled vamp renaissance. Based on the first three volumes of the popular kid-lit series by Darren Shan, the film bumps the twelve-year-old hero's age to 16 -- the better, one supposes, to promote the flick to the Twilight crowd, despite it being a piece with a completely different flavor,...

Let's be honest. John C. Reilly isn't exactly the first person you would think of when "vampire" comes to mind. Yet, here he is, starring in Cirque Du Freak , director Paul Weitz's adaptation of the first three novels in author Darren Shan's series. Surprisingly enough, he pulls it off as Larten Crepsley, in spite of that wild hair, not to mention everyone's current perception of Reilly being a comedy actor ( Walk Hard , Step Brothers ). However, if you trace his career, he has always been one to throw us off guard, from his early days in Brian De Palma's Casualties of War to Dolores Claiborne , Paul Anderson's Boogie Nights and Magnolia , Chicago and Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York and The Aviator . This month, he's a 220-year-old bloodsucker who...
