Joey Klein’s opioid addiction drama tells the story of Henry (Alex Wolff) as he sinks into a world of drugs and violence following the death of his mother. Set in Sudbury, Ontario, Henry turns to his mother’s allergy medication and befriends Ana (Imogen Poots) – his troublesome and noisy neighbour.
Castle In The Ground focuses on a small town struggling with an opioid epidemic. Henry’s fast-track through life showcases his enforced maturity as he cares for his sick mother. He is denied the opportunity to make the mistakes of a teenager as he constantly reiterates their deal – he goes to college when she gets healthy again. This oppression leads him to come to terms with grief by entangling himself in the dangerous world of Ana’s opioid addiction.
Their relationship builds upon Ana’s reliance on medication and Henry’s loss. She gives him apple pie for free...

No matter what kind of story you’re trying to tell, getting two talented actors for central roles is an excellent first step. In the case of Castle in the Ground, even a premise that descends into some questionable territory is heavily mitigated by who you’re watching engage in these acts. Here, it’s Imogen Poots and Alex Wolff, with the latter having a truly tough leading role to play. The movie goes to some dark places and makes some debatable narrative decisions, but Poots and Wolff are so inherently watchable that you’re willing to forgive some of its trespasses. The movie is a drama about addiction. Henry (Wolff) is taking care of his sick mother Rebecca (Neve Campbell). She doesn’t have long to live, with her pain managed by medicine that Henry dispenses to her. When she passes away, Henry is at a loss, breaking up...

It’s a relatively slim week in new releases, even by the standards of the ongoing coronavirus shutdown — although there are a few gems to be found, if you hunt hard enough. Families have “Scoob!” which Warner Bros. decided to make available directly via digital, following the recent success of “Trolls World Tour.” And grownups can check out Tom Hardy playing the shell of a notorious gangster in “Capone.” Here are the week’s new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them.
High-profile on-demand studio and indie offerings:
Capone (Josh Trank)
Distributor: Vertical Entertainment
Where to Find It: Rent on Amazon, iTunes and other on-demand platforms.
In “Capone,” Tom Hardy, as the aging, broken-down, not-all-there Al Capone, acts under a corpse-gray mask of desiccated-mobster makeup. Is “Capone” a fascinatingly idiosyncratic twilight-of-the-mobster drama? Or is it a “Saturday Night Live” sketch with pretensions? It may be a bit of both.

In movies as in life, there is a familiar exasperation that often comes with witnessing people personally (rather than professionally) involved with addicts, as they try to make excuses for manipulative, mercurial behavior, chasing the user’s “new leaf” promises like a carrot on a stick. Fervently hoping for positive change, their desire to help can curdle into unintentional enabling. Plus, as engrossing as addiction may be from the inside, when viewed externally it sure can be monotonous.
Those are problems “Castle in the Ground” can’t quite escape in dramatic terms, as this well-acted second feature from actor-turned-director Joey Klein charts a grieving youth’s terrible choice of succor in the company of his junkie neighbor. Part gritty portrait of a mutually destructive drug-based relationship à la “Crush” or “Panic in Needle Park,” part crime thriller, the film never quite grips enough on either plane. The result is an earnest,...

‘Castle in the Ground’ Review: Alex Wolff and Imogen Poots Star in a Potent and Painful Opioid Drama
Even as “Castle in the Ground” begins to fray and fall apart, Joey Klein’s dour but gripping opioid drama remains believable for how perfectly it dovetails with its grieving protagonist. Like 19-year-old Henry Fine (Alex Wolff) — a nice Jewish boy who lives with his dying mom (Neve Campbell) in a necrotic Sudbury apartment complex — the film is sensitive and mesmeric and oh so close to moments of cathartic beauty. And like 19-year-old Henry Fine — a grieving orphan who inherits his mom’s leftover OxyContin and fentanyl patches after she dies from Hodgkin’s lymphoma (or from an overdose of the treatment she’s been prescribed for it) — Klein’s film grows distressed, unsure of itself, and lost in a trite crime thriller that spirals away from what made it special in the first place.
And yet “Castle in the Ground” is so that it often feels as if it...

"I'm sorry that you got roped into all of this. You seem like a good kid." Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for an indie drama titled Castle in the Ground, which first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year and also at the Vancouver Film Festival. A grieving teenager named Henry befriends his charismatic but troubled next-door neighbor, Ana, and soon becomes embroiled in a world of addiction and violence just as the opioid epidemic takes hold of their small town. Alex Wolff stars with Imogen Poots, plus Tom Cullen, Star Slade, Kiowa Gordon, Keir Gilchrist, and Neve Campbell. Interesting to see this uses the 4:3 aspect ratio, but perhaps it adds to the overall distressing feel of this film. It's worth a look. An addict is an addict whether they’ve become one via doctor’s orders or not. Sometimes the “not” part is even a direct result of those orders. When you’re working with volatile drugs like OxyContin, the line separating too much and not enough is razor-thin with the inclination being to err on the side of numb. We’re talking pain management after all and the more we take, the more tolerance we build to make the cycle worse. And for someone with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, it can be excruciating enough to prevent your caregiver from saying, “No.” What’s Henry (Alex Wolff) to do when his mother (Neve Campbell) screams for another? As someone pushing off college to provide her comfort, how much of her suffering can he endure before agreeing one more can’t hurt?

"The compassion of Klein's filmmaking rings true." Outsider Pictures and Strand Releasing has debuted a new trailer for We're Still Together, an indie drama from Montreal that originally debuted at festivals back in 2016. It's just now getting a direct-to-vod release in the Us after years of playing at festivals but no official release. The film is about an unlikely friendship between two lonely individuals - a manic single dad, and an overweight kid who can't get along with anyone. Starring Jesse Camacho and Joey Klein, with Brielle Robillard and Eve Harlow. This won the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Film at the New Hampshire Film Festival in 2016, and a few Actra Montreal Awards for the two lead performances. This looks heartbreakingly honest and moving, a film about how we all have issues yet friendship makes up for it. "For someone who doesn't feel pain, you sure know an awful lot about it." Indican Pictures has released an official trailer for a medical thriller titled Painless, the latest film written & directed by filmmaker Jordan Horowitz (not the same Jordan as the producer of La La Land). The film is about a scientist born with a rare condition that makes him unable to feel physical pain, and he becomes increasingly obsessed with finding a cure. This isn't the only film about someone with this condition - a Russian film named Jumpman follows a boy with the same rare disease. Joey Klein (from TV's "12 Monkeys" and "This Life") stars in this, along with Evalena Marie, Kip Gilman, Pascal Yen-Pfister, Tommie Sox, and Nick Latrenta. Yes it does look a bit cliche and campy, but still seems like an intriguing film about obsession and the human condition. Here's the first official...

"I'm done playing around... I know these woods..." IFC Films has released the official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled What Keeps You Alive, which premiered at both the SXSW and Fantasia festivals this year. The film is about a female married couple who head to a cabin in the mountains near a lake to celebrate their one-year anniversary. From the moment they arrive, something changes in Jules' normally loving wife, as Jackie (if that even is her real name?) begins to reveal a previously unknown dark side. Ooh. Hannah Emily Anderson and Brittany Allen star, along with Martha MacIsaac and Joey Klein. "Defying expectations at every turn," the film is described as "a nerve-twisting cat and mouse thriller built around a shattering tale of heartbreak and betrayal." This looks totally nuts and thrilling as all hell. Enjoy. Here's the red band trailer (+ poster) for Colin Minihan's What Keeps You Alive,...

After portraying 11 different clones (and winning an Emmy for her efforts) in the recently wrapped sci-fi series "Orphan Black", Tatiana Maslany is slacking off by playing just a single character, Erin Hurley, in this month’s Stronger.
The film is based on the book by Jeff Bauman and Bret Witter and stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Bauman, who was standing at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon waiting for girlfriend Hurley to complete the race when the blast from the bomb left by terrorist Tamerlan Tsarnaev exploded at his feet.
Bauman lost both legs — but was able to identify Tsarnaev from his hospital bed — and the movie recounts Bauman and Hurley’s relationship as he begins his arduous journey of recovery.

“The Other Half” is a film built on withholding. Whether it’s writer/director Joey Klein’s general approach to dispensing key character details or the information that two lovers choose to keep hidden from each other, there’s a pervasive kind of obfuscation that can be at turns refreshing and frustrating. It’s a series of preludes and aftermaths, following an arc of persistent loss and newfound love. But when Klein trusts his actors and leans on the strength of the genuine moments they’re able to create together, the story of Emily (Tatiana Maslany) and Nickie (Tom Cullen) moves beyond the usual constraints of characters with similar pasts.
True to form with the rest of the film’s strongest elements, Nickie and Emily’s relationship has a simple beginning. After making eyes at each other across the room at the café where Nickie works, the two strike up a relationship.

It was absolutely no surprise that Hugh Jackman’s last Wolverine movie Logan would top the box office, but it actually ended up doing even better than my prediction when actual numbers came in, grossing $88.3 million over the weekend. That makes it the fourth highest X-Movie opening (including Deadpool) but also the biggest R-rated opening for March, defeating 300’s once-impressive $70 million opening.
