Ian Bonhôte, a double BAFTA nominee for the feature documentary “McQueen,” has attached as the director on narrative feature “Faithfull,” about the singer-songwriter Marianne Faithfull. Altitude has acquired worldwide sales rights.

Casting is underway for the role of Mick Jagger with casting director Sarah Crowe, BAFTA-nominated for “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” on board. Production is set for this fall.
The story is set in London in the mid-1960s and depicts Faithfull’s roller-coaster journey from being discovered as a convent schoolgirl of 17, finding fame as a pop idol, living through hedonistic times and a tumultuous romance with Jagger, to being a homeless drug addict in London.

Coriolanus is the explosive directorial debut of Ralph Fiennes, which premiered to great acclaim earlier this year at the Berlin Film Festival. We were at the very first screening and our very own Rob Beames awarded it with five stars. Set against the backdrop of a republic caught up in a long and bitter war, Fiennes’s Coriolanus is a tense and timeless thriller based around power broking, political manipulation and the arguments and prejudices of opposing social extremes.

"Coriolanus" producer Julia Taylor-Stanley and "Senna" writer Manish Pandey are teaming for a $60 million drama about the Ferrari racing team at Artemis Films says Screen Daily.
The story will concentrate on famed drivers Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins along with the racing brand’s history in the late 1950s and early 1960s which is described as a "very tragic period". A love triangle element is also being incorporated.
Taylor-Stanley says that the project is moving very fast and they are "already talking to an A-list director and have some financing committed". The project is being set up as a UK-Italy co-production with shooting to take place in both countries.

Well this is a some flipping good news! I’m pretty sure that the makers of Senna (that would be writer – Manish Pandey, Director – Asif Kapadia & Producers Tim Bevan, Liza Chasi, Eric Fellner and James Gay-Rees) had no idea whatsoever that the movie they have created would become such a massive hit picking up award after award wherever they go.
I still believe that Senna is the best film that I’ve seen all year and am so desperate to get the Blu-ray copy through in the post! I’m hoping tomorrow may be the day! For those of you not in the know, Senna is a documentary based around the life of Formula One three time world champion racing driver, Ayrton Senna. The movie will make you laugh, cry and you’ll watch in disbelief as the movie unfolds but I’ll leave the rest of my DVD review...

After working on what’s apparently one of the best documentaries of the year, Senna, writer Manish Pandey is sticking to territory he seems to know, with ScreenDaily (via ThePlaylist) telling us that he’s collaborating with Coriolanus producer Julia Taylor-Stanley on a narrative drama about a Ferrari F1 team.
But not just any Ferrari F1 team! No, this will tell the true story of “famed drivers Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins and the racing brand’s history in the late 1950s and early 1960s,” which the producer calls “a very tragic period in Ferrari’s history.” If that weren’t enough, a love triangle will also come into play; it would appear that they’re also racing for a woman’s heart. (I hate myself.) An “A-list director” is even being talked to at the moment, although no one seems to know who this might be. The budget is surprisingly high at $60 million,...

- Ralph Fiennes's Coriolanus marks his directorial debut and reveals his admiration for William Shakespeare. His film is a contemporary retelling of the Bard's political thriller. "I can’t help thinking if he [Shakespeare] were alive and writing today, he’d be writing for cinema. His stories and language are cinematic,” he said at the Berlinale, where the film premiered. Meeting the press, he had his three producers--Julia Taylor-Stanley, Gaby Tana and Colin Vaines--stand and bow, wanting applause from “the roomful of film journalists who know how difficult it is these days to get an independent film made.” Coriolanus is set to be released this November by The Weinstein Co. Exclusive: The Weinstein Company is negotiating for U.S. distribution rights to Coriolanus, the Ralph Fiennes-directed John Logan-scripted contemporized adaptation of the Shakespeare play. Gerard Butler, Fiennes, Brian Cox, Vanessa Redgrave and Jessica Chastain lead the cast. The film will be part of the competition at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival. It puts Harvey Weinstein back in business with Fiennes, who starred in the 1996 Best Picture winner The English Patient and most recently in The Reader. The plan being discussed involves platforming the picture later this year, in time for awards season. Fiennes plays the title character, a hero who is banished and plots his revenge by aligning with his sworn enemy, Tulles Aufidius (Butler) to return and sack his homeland. Political machinations and misgivings get in the way and place Coiolanus in grave danger. Gabrielle Tana of Magnolia Mae Films, Julia Taylor-Stanley of Artemis Films, and Colin Vaines produced it.

- Lots of glossy business cards will be exchanged during the 4th edition of International Financing Forum (Iff) (which takes place during Tiff). In what I imagine is like a speed dating between producers looking for coin and those looking to finance the next hot film project. There are a slew of names/projects from established filmmakers (Hany Abu-Assad, Terrence Davies and Kevin Macdonald) and some first-time directors among the 43 listed below that have caught over attention. Hany Abu-Assad is taking on what I imagine would be a controversial biopic - attaching himself to Arafat with his Paradise Now producer, Roman Paul. Paul produced Waltz with Bashir, and the upcoming (we'll be talking about this one in 2010), Womb. I'd be surprised if Tony Grisoni took a day off in the past 24 months, he has penned a truck load of projects and would embark on his feature filmmaking debut with Kingsland.

- The last time Julie Taymor brought Shakespeare to the big screen it was her little seen (at least in my necks of the woods) directorial debut called Titus. For her fourth feature length outing, Taymor is returning to the original material writing source, and in the same measure, top billing her feature with a strong female character as she did in Frida and potentially adding much of the familiar visual candy as we last saw in Across the Universe. With The Tempest, Taymor is proposing that she switch the gender of the main character in Shakespeare's play, making Prospero into Prospera. Helen Mirren is on board to play the lead role – a castaway leader of an island with her daughter Miranda (Felicity Jones) and a shipwrecked crew full of Prospera's enemies in tow. The island's other inhabitants include Djimon Hounsou as the deformed slave Caliban and Ben Wishaw as the airy spirit Ariel.

Julie Taymor is gathering a cast ranging from blue-blooded Oscar winners to up-and-comers for her big-screen adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" that, in a gender-defying twist, will see Helen Mirren reigning over the magical island.
Although the play centers on Prospero, an exiled duke-turned-sorcerer, Taymor -- who likes to take an experimental approach to her stage and film projects -- has rechristened the lead character Prospera so that Mirren can take on the role.
Mirren will be surrounded by Jeremy Irons, Djimon Hounsou, Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Ben Wishaw and Felicity Jones. Geoffrey Rush is in negotiations to join the cast.
The film, being produced by Bob Chartoff, Lynn Hendee and Julia Taylor-Stanley, is eyeing a November start date in Hawaii. Miramax has acquired the rights to all English-speaking territories; Icon is handling foreign sales.
