Troma Entertainment has a lot to celebrate this summer. Co-founded by legendary cult filmmaker Lloyd Kaufman (The Toxic Avenger, Tromeo and Juliet), the film production company that prides itself on independence will experience a trifecta of anniversaries: the 40th anniversary of Troma Entertainment, the 30th anniversary of The Toxic Avenger, and the 15th anniversary of TromaDance.
TromaDance, Troma’s own film festival that gives passionate independent filmmakers a platform on which to showcase their hard work in front of equally passionate fans, will take place in Brooklyn on June 27th and 28th at The Paper Box. This will be the first time TromaDance has crashed New York City. Although it’s in a new location, Brooklyn still isn’t too far from New Jersey, where Troma’s mop-wielding super-hero, The Toxic Avenger, dealt his own brand of justice.

House of Good and Evil is a movie we’ve been keeping an eye on since its first appearance in our Indie Spotlight and it’s headed to DVD on April 1st. For the latest installment of our Q&A series, Derek Anderson had a chance to catch up with the movie’s star, Rachel Marie Lewis, to learn about her experience on set:
You’ve played characters in dramas, comedies, and romances, but to my knowledge, your role as Maggie Conley in House of Good and Evil was your first time acting in a horror movie. What was it like to play a character in that genre for the first time?
Rachel Marie Lewis: It was great and certainly stretched me, that’s for sure. Every day was emotionally and physically tedious, so preparation was absolutely crucial.

Misery Obscura: The Art and Photography of Eerie Von. That’s the name of the tour of paintings and photographs by former Samhain/Danzig musician Eerie Von that stopped in Pittsburgh last month. I was there and came away very impressed!
Eerie Von and creepy me.
The setting was a smaller club and gallery, the Rex Theater. The event had a very informal, relaxed feeling, and ended with an acoustic set by Eerie and musician . . Eerie was surprisingly friendly, and mingling and chatting with everyone who came to the roughly-four hour event, and talked and joked with members of the audience between numbers of his set.
He talked with me for a while. He remarked that I was older than many of the twenty-somethings in attendance, and that lead to chatting things we grew up with. We reminisced a little about reading Famous Monsters of Filmland; he mentioned loving the...

Three years ago, the internet was all abuzz about the new television network Percy “Master P” Miller was embarking on. Better Black Television was going to exemplify a new and improved standard for an under-served market.
It was going to be a general entertainment channel running a wide range of scripted, unscripted and news programming including: drama and comedy series, movies, animation, reality, politics, sports and entertainment news, children’s educational and teen programming along with “responsible” hip-hop music videos.
A company statement claimed the network would provide…”positive content for a black and brown culture.” Supposedly, production had already begun and a website had been implemented.
Advisory board members for the network included Oscar winner Denzel Washington, Vault Load Films president Jim Finkl, NAACP executive director Vicangelo Bullock, NBA player Derek Anderson, hip-hop pioneer DJ Kool Herc, entrepreneur Olatokunbo Betiku and real estate mogul Curtis Oakes.

Exclusive: Shortly after Arnold Schwarzenegger left the Governor’s Mansion and Tweeted his desire to resume his acting career, there seems to finally be some action on his signature franchise, The Terminator. I’m told that interest is kicking back up. One interested party: Universal, which is looking for a directing vehicle for Justin Lin. He helmed the last three installments of The Fast and the Furious franchise, including the latest Fast Five, which Universal releases April 29. I’ve heard that the plan would be to possibly pair him with Chris Morgan, who aside from Fast Five has credits on big scale Universal films that include the upcoming Keanu Reeves actioner 47 Ronin and Wanted. Since being acquired in bankruptcy court last February by Santa Monica-based hedge fund Pacificor for $29.5 million, The Terminator has maintained radio silence, surprising given the voracious studio appetite for branded tent pole projects that lend themselves to 3D technology.

In the biggest auction since, well, since some big auction somewhere, the bidding war has ended for the Terminator franchise. Both Sony and Lionsgate were bidding on the property. So who won? More from Deadline: But the studios didn't come away the winners -- which, I'm told, prompted a furious Sony Pictures Entertainment's president of worldwide affairs Peter Schlessel to "storm out" of the Downtown La offices of Fti Capital Advisors which was holding the auction. Instead, Halcyon Holding Corp accepted the $29.5 million bid from, of all parties, the debtholder which pushed it into bankruptcy, Santa Barbara-based hedge fund Pacificor. (This is the same Pacificor whom Halcyon accused in a lawsuit of extortion, bribery, and fraud and demanded $30M in damages.) Tonight, Sony and Lionsgate dropped out at just under $29.5 million when it became clear that Pacificor "was willing to pay almost any amount of money for Terminator," an insider tells me.

Which studio is making the biggest play for the rights to Terminator? You may or may not be surprised to hear that Lionsgate had bid $15 million plus 5% of future grosses to acquire the franchise, which is now embroiled in Chapter 11 with other assets of Halcyon Group.
The producers who run Halcyon, Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek, got in over their heads and with no federal bailout in the offing, bankruptcy was the best they could do. Having acquired the rights in 2007, Anderson and Kubicek couldn't repay $24 million of a $39 million loan it took out for Terminator, and less than three months after releasing Salvation back in May, it was curtains for the company.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Lionsgate's bid of $15 million in cash plus 5% of gross receipts from any future movies makes the studio the top bidder to buy the "Terminator" franchise rights from the Halcyon Group. In a federal bankruptcy court filing today, Halcyon Group, the company owned by producers Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek, named Lionsgate the "stalking horse" bidder for the rights. The duo put the franchise up for sale in September to raise cash to work their way out of Chapter 11 reorganization. The designation of stalking horse means any other company that wants to bid against Lionsgate has to offer at least $750,000 more. The deadline for competitive bids is February 5th. A new owner of the "Terminator" rights will be...

For the record, I didn't dislike "Terminator Salvation." It was far from perfect and it felt more like a reboot than a continuation, but it was a fun action flick with good-borderline-great special effects and a promising performance from soon-to-be-everywhere Sam Worthington. None of that matters now though, as it seems the franchise is up for sale. Again.
There have been as many "Terminator" franchise owners as there have been movies, a trend that will continue at least through the fifth movie, according to the Los Angeles Times. Halcyon Holding Group heads Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek purchased the franchise rights in 2007. As the company now inches towards bankruptcy, Halcyon is looking to sell. They've valued the property at $60 million -- more than double the $25 million they paid in 2007 -- but with home video releases incoming and additional spin-off and/or sequel possibilities, the number might not be too far off.

No major film franchise has been owned by as many people as the Terminator series. The future of the franchise was called into question recently when current owners Halcyon were forced to file for bankruptcy, but as a new piece in the La Times points out, rights shuffling almost seems like standard operating procedure if you're in the Terminator business. Halcyon Holding Group's Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek bought the Terminator rights in 2007, paying $25m for the privilege of making Terminator: Salvation. The Terminator rights had been split prior to 1997, with Gale Anne Hurd owning 50% and a variety of companies owning the balance at different times. In 1997 former Carolco producers Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna unified the rights by purchasing the stake from the bankrupt Carolco as well as Hurd's half. Then, ten years later, they sold the total package to Halcyon. But despite the relative success of ...

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has bought the international distribution rights to Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the fourth installment in the multibillion-dollar movie franchise.
The deal inked with the film's producers, Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson of the Halcyon Co., hands Sony's worldwide acquisitions group arm all foreign distribution rights except for Korea and some Middle East countries. There are no plans to sell off any of those foreign rights to third-party distributors, a SPWAG spokesman said.
Warner Bros. is handling U.S. and Canadian distribution rights for the film, set to bow in first-half 2009.
"The Sony distribution team is really energized by this opportunity to work with Victor and Derek at the Halcyon Co. in continuing our involvement with the 'Terminator' series," said Peter Schlessel, president of worldwide affairs at Sony.
McG will helm the film, the first in a new Terminator trilogy that stars Christian Bale as John Connor. The project also reunites John Brancato and Michael Ferris, who partnered to pen Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, as well as Moritz Borman, a producer on the 2003 film.

Following a breakdown in negotiations over the distribution of Terminator 4, the movie's producers filed a complaint for declaratory relief Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeking an injunction against MGM.
The T Asset Acquisition Co. -- representing producer Moritz Borman and Halcyon Co. principals Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson, who acquired rights to the Terminator franchise this year -- contended in the filing that MGM did not negotiate in good faith when the two parties sat down in June to hammer out a distribution deal for the movie, which MGM would like to release in 2009.
MGM maintains that it acquired first rights in the 1990s for an exclusive, 30-day negotiation for distribution rights to the films in the franchise. Although T Asset, the company formed to produce the movie, challenges that contention, it says that Borman and MGM COO Rick Sands first met for lunch on May 31 at Houston's in Century City to begin to discuss a deal.

The Terminator is coming back.
The Halcyon Co. -- a recently formed, privately financed film development, production and financing company headed by co-CEOs Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek -- has acquired the franchise rights to the popular movie series from C2's Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna, intending to make a new trilogy that would anchor their movie company.
The deal is said to be in the tens of millions of dollars.
Terminator 4 will be based on a script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, which was part of the transaction. Halcyon plans to immediately begin preproduction on the film. While no distribution agreement has been set, Halcyon is hoping that "T4" will be ready for release in the first half of 2009.
The deal includes the right to produce any future Terminator films, as well as all future merchandising and licensing rights, certain future revenue derived from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, as well as certain rights in the television project The Sarah Connor Chronicles and the sole right to produce all future Terminator projects in any new or existing media.
