Heeramandi star Sharmin Segal once again facing trolling. This time she is trolling for being “rude” to Sanjeeda Shaikh.
In a clip when journalist asks Sanjeeda whether she was intimidated by the idea of working with Bhansali, Sanjeeda replies, “He is just a perfectionist. He wants everything to look not mediocre because whatever he does is nothing less than excellence. He is somebody who is respected all around the world for his brilliant creative mind and incisive advocacy and honesty to the craft… He is somebody who is very expressive. If he doesn’t like it, he doesn’t like it. And if he likes it, he will validate your performance in front of everyone.”
While, Sharmin adds that perfectionist is “a very basic word” to describe Bhansali. “It’s the kind of a word that an outsider who has never worked with him, been on his set and seen...

The verdict is out. The audience has spoken. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus debut series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” is a global hit for Netflix, dancing to second position on the streamer’s worldwide non-English TV chart.
Spanning 1920 through 1947, the lavish story is set in the Heeramandi district of Lahore, British India, the milieu of the tawaifs. As with the geisha of Japan, tawaifs were trained in music and dance and courted by nobility. At the show’s center are Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala), the scheming queen of Heeramandi, and her vindictive niece Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha), who has ambitions to take her aunt’s place.
“Heeramandi” is Netflix’s biggest-budget Indian original to date and the biggest undertaking of Bhansali’s storied career. The filmmaker is no stranger to film hits, including his last theatrical release, 2022’s “Gangubai Kathiawadi.” While he is used to the ‘Friday report card’ as Indian...

Favouritism and selective criticism in the film industry are troubling trends. Media and critics often show bias, ignoring some issues while highlighting others. A recent example involves directors Sandeep Vanga and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

However, when Sanjay Leela Bhansali made similar controversial comments about his show Heeramandi – The Diamond Bazaar, he didn’t face any backlash. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi which was recently released on Netflix opened the grey doors that lead to the part of Cinema that is less talked about. How Sarfarosh changed the patriotic film for good. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Not all patriotic movies mentioned the enemy nation by name. It was all about a ‘dushmun desh’ with junior artistes with oriental features and actors made to resemble them, for China (to whom we lost in 1962) was the major enemy! Pakistan as an enemy was rare.
All that changed after Border in 1997, which was a dramatized version of the Longowal battle in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Obviously, Pakistan had to be named and shown here. But Sarfarosh, released in 1999, was the first fictional drama to show our neighboring country openly as the ‘villain’ waging proxy wars. Eerily, the Kargil conflict happened within weeks of its release. And despite our then-Prime Minister’s friendly overtures to them, our recalcitrant neighbour continues to foster terror and express that they want Kashmir!

Aditi Rao Hydari & Sharmin Segal (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi series was released on Netflix on May 1, 2024. The period drama is based in the pre-independence era and deals with the lives of courtesans. The cast includes Manisha Koirala, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin Segal and Richa Chadha. It is one of the most discussed Hindi web series of this year.
When Heeramandi was released on Netflix, it received mixed reactions from the audience and critics. Some loved the grandeur and music, while some weren’t impressed with some performances. Sonakshi Sinha Plays Fareedan In Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Netflix Series Heeramandi (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Ever since Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Heeramandi dropped on Netflix, people have been sharing their arguments and disagreements with the show that is based in the 1920s and 1940s in Lahore. The web series tells the story of a place in Lahore that was ruled by the courtesans, which actually exists in Lahore!
Recently, an additional director from the series defended all the criticism and trolling and mentioned that they had researched well and found out that these Tawaifs from Lahore were the highest tax-paying citizens of their times and were richer than Nawabs.
Now Sonakshi Sinha, who plays Fareedan in the series, has defended all the criticism and asked the audiences why they are expecting an accurate history chapter out of a show just meant to entertain.

Back in 2019, on a visit to Los Angeles, celebrated Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali stopped in at the offices of Netflix. In his informal five-minute meeting with CEO Ted Sarandos, Bhansali pitched an idea — it would be an opulent tale of warring courtesans set amid India’s struggle for independence. Sarandos greenlit the project on the spot.
Now Bhansali’s Hindi-language series, “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” is making its U.S. debut (episodes dropped on May 1).
The project’s development took somewhat longer than that Netflix visit.

From the moment the very first trailer for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Heeramandi” on Netflix arrived, it’s become increasingly difficult to ignore that a certain type of Indian actress has passed into extinction.
Since the dawn of Indian cinema, music and dance have been integral to the movie-going experience, with extra emphasis placed on the “heroine” — a leading lady who could not only carry a whole film as an actor, but also captivate the audience as a graceful, expressive dancer. Think of Hollywood corollaries like Judy Garland, Ginger Rogers, Doris Day — but if they were working well into the late 20th and even 21st century. It’s inherently wrapped up in India’s history of folk dance, which is always present at festivals or celebrations; and classical dance, which requires extensive training and was often a precursor to entering beauty pageants and the film industry. Over the last few years, globally, there has been a significant increase in our degree of viewership due to the proliferation of various Ott platforms. As it has embraced niche audiences and content, it has empowered filmmakers and emerging talent to showcase their work to a wider audience. In India too, the wave has been felt with web series such as Sacred Games (2018), Scam 1992 (2020), Paatal Lok (2020), Jubilee(2023), and The Railway Man (2023), among others. The recent Netflix extravaganza, Heeramandi, directed by auteur filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, whose image among cinephiles and general viewers is held with respect, also roused similar expectations. The series has all the signature styles of the filmmaker of displaying exuberance and is crammed with exquisitely choreographed songs,...

As with any time I try to explain a massive figure in Indian film to the uninitiated, the temptation rises quickly to compare director Sanjay Leela Bhansali to someone in Hollywood.
And, as with any time I actually make these comparisons, everything falls short. Bhansali depicts spectacle evocative of the work of Baz Luhrmann, but even that is a pale imitation (no disrespect to either). There is no one literally anywhere in the world creating cinema with the scale and grandeur that Bhansali has cultivated as his signature, a style so distinct that his own peers pay homage to it while he’s still alive and working.
But at the top of IndieWire’s conversation about Bhansali’s career, he’s quick to shake the larger-than-life visual splendor of his creations, emphasizing — as writer, director and producer, among his many hats — that the stories themselves evoke that scope.

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, now on Netflix in eight episodes is everything that Bhansali has come to be associated with, then some more. It is a feast for the eyes and soul with a gallery of female actors giving their best to every shot. At times the best of these actresses is not good enough. One of the lead actresses pretending to be drunken dancing is ludicrously caricatural. But then there is Aditi Rao Hydari looking every inch the ethereal kothewali, a distant cousin to Rekha in Umrao Jaan. And Shruti Sharma as ill-fated-in-love Saima makes her space. I must also mention Jayati Bhatia as Manisha Koirala’s faithful woman-Friday. Even when in the background she makes her presence felt.
Bhansali’s vision and execution are impeccable so much so that you wonder what this kotha classic would look like on the big screen.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali Rushed To Get This Song… But It Was Too Late! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the mastermind behind visually stunning and emotionally charged films, recently launched his debut web series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar on Netflix. Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s father, Navin Bhansali, was a producer who never quite achieved his filmmaking dreams. When Navin was on his deathbed, he made a peculiar request. 10 Iconic Dance Numbers in the Millennium ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Hindi Film Music has witnessed paradigm changes in the Millennium. Songs are now promo tools and barely situational, and lip-sync numbers predominantly dance songs. On International Dance Day (April 29), I choose the 10 truly magnificent dance numbers that will always live on. And yes, I have not included Naacho Naacho from Rrr as it was technically not a Hindi movie!
Budtameez Dil / Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Ranbir Kapoor outdid himself in this song, reviving memories of his father, Rishi Kapoor’s mastery of dance! The musical was enriched immeasurably by this by Benny Dayal-Shefali Alvares song, composed by Pritam with delightfully crazy lyrics (Paan mein pudina dekha) by Amitabh Bhattacharya. And if you thought the dance had a hint of Michael Jackson, please remember that legend was its choreographer Remo D’Souza’s idol.
