AGC Television is adapting an R.V. Bowman young adult novel trilogy into a live-action family series.
Hook’s Daughter: The Pirate Princess Chronicles will be created from the book of the same name, with Thor Freudenthal is attached to direct and Lucy Brown (Bride or Groom) is adapting the fantasy adventure trilogy.
AGC’s Chief Creative Officer Lourdes Diaz, YA division head Aghi Koh and CEO Stuart Ford will executive produce.
The synopsis reads: “When her Sea Captain father fails to show up for his annual visit at her boarding school, a 16-year-old girl breaks out to search for his whereabouts. She is shocked to find he is on a magical island called Neverland and is known as the villainous Captain Hook. But when she uncovers family secrets, she also discovers the real villain just might be Peter Pan.”

Blumhouse's Get Out, the Jordan Peele horror/comedy/social commentary, parlayed its glowing critical reception for a stunning $30.5 million Oscar weekend in 2,781 theaters and a very respectable $10,976 per-screen average. The other new films, Lionsgate/Summit's animated flick, Rock Dog, at $3.7 million, fell just outside of the top 10, while the critically-derided inanimate Collide, from Open Road, spun out at $1.53 million in 2,045 theaters for an abysmal $753 per theater.Get Out, a film where an African-American man notices his girlfriend's family estate may be hiding a sinister secret, had a surprise sneak premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, which set the stage for its critical success. The film maintains a rare 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a healthy 8.1 IMDb rating and an A- on CinemaScore. That means the horror film should see an easy falloff next weekend even as the Groundhog Day Ya film, Before I Fall, and the final Hugh Jackman Wolverine film,...

"How many lives is this war worth?!" Roadside Attractions has debuted an official trailer for a sweeping historical drama titled Bitter Harvest, set during "The Holodomor" in Ukraine in between the first and second World War. The "Holodomor" was a genocidal famine engineered by Joseph Stalin, as an effort to stop the Ukrainian independence movement, resulting in the deaths of millions of people. The film tells the story of a romance between a young Ukrainian couple torn apart by the starvation. Max Irons stars, along with Samantha Barks as his lover, also including Terence Stamp, Barry Pepper, Richard Brake, Aneurin Barnard, Tom Austen, Tamer Hassan and Lucy Brown. This looks okay, but it's hard to tell with this trailer. There's too much going on and the director isn't that impressive, it might not be any good. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for George Mendeluk's Bitter Harvest, originally from...

Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa are reuniting for one more take (or is it toke) of the stoner comedy - this time in a feature film titled "Dispensary," which hails from The Yard Entertainment. To be shot in La this fall, the film's writer & director is Dylan Brown, and will be produced by Lucy Brown, and will follow the highs and lows (although likely mostly the highs) of Devin Overstreet (played by Wiz), a college student with a dream - to open The Dispensary (or what he deems the McDonald's of the weed industry). After getting himself expelled from college, he teams with Mac (played by Snoop Dogg), a guy who knows a thing or 2 about marijuana, and together they...

"I remember having a discussion with [co-creator] Adrian [Hodges] two years ago, about where a film might go. But the script has to be written and approved. But I think that would (more)...

The opening titles of Primeval involve triangular shards of light with various dinosaurs and monsters emblazoned on them, synchronized with the appearance of each cast member’s credit. This speaks volumes about the show itself, which has always placed an emphasis on CGI beasties over characterization and acting.
Primeval suffered an extinction event in summer 2009, when ITV decided to cancel the expensive series in the face of strong ratings, because of financial difficulties. In a remarkable rescue, the show was revived by ITV agreeing to split production costs between three partners: UKTV (who’ll premiere series 5 on Watch), BBC America and the German broadcaster ProSieben. It’s great to see a TV show survive death thanks to some business creativity, to benefit the millions who enjoy it, but Primeval is unfortunately a series that remains more of a special-effects showreel than a compelling action drama.

When I first learned that Syfy had a creature feature in the works starring Dean Cain called Frost Giant, without knowing anything about the plot, I just automatically assumed the titular "frost giant" would be a Yeti or an Ymir or some other furry Scandinavian behemoth. Nope. Turns out Syfy has made a movie about a block of ice that sprouts arms and legs, comes to life, and goes on a killing spree. All I can say to that is, "About damn time!"
Ex-tv Superman Dean Cain stars in Frost Giant along with Lucy Brown from season three of the Brit sci-fi dino series "Primeval" in this frostbitten fright flick from prolific Syfy movie scripter Raphael Jordan and director Victor Garcia (Return to House on Haunted Hill, Mirrors 2). Chicago – Sean Bean is an actor who naturally exudes menace. His dark squinting eyes always seem to be up to something, and surely assisted him in getting cast as the bad guy in a variety of blockbusters. While American moviegoers know him primarily for roles such as Jack Ryan’s adversary in “Patriot Games,” British audiences view Bean as their equivalent to a heroic Jack Ryan-type everyman, thanks to his portrayal of swashbuckling soldier Richard Sharpe.
Based on Bernard Cornwell’s series of historical fiction novels, the “Sharpe” film saga was originally broadcast in the mid-90s, consisting of no less than fourteen installments. Sharpe starts out as a British sergeant who receives a promotion after saving the life of the future Duke of Wellington. The books, and their subsequent television adaptations, chronicle Sharpe’s adventures in the Napoleonic Wars, climaxing at the Battle of Waterloo. Two more “Sharpe” films were shot a decade later,...

# 240 (Vol. 2 #12): Wimpy In Love
In his introduction to one of Fantagraphics Books’ earlier set of volumes reprinting E. C. Segar’s Popeye comic strips, comics historian Rick Marschall argues that Popeye’s supporting player J. Wellington Wimpy is a “scoundrel” with a “lack of conscience” who can and does “betray” everyone. But in reviewing the Sunday strips in Volume 3 of Fantagraphics’ current series of Segar Popeye reprints, I’ve discovered that Wimpy is more complex than that. He does indeed have a conscience, though it is repeatedly overwhelmed by his animalistic appetite for hamburgers.
There are a month of 1933 Sunday strips about Popeye’s boxing match with the enormous Bullo Oxheart, in which Wimpy acts as referee, though he keeps being distracted from the fight by his efforts to mooch a meal off a friend, Eddie, who is sitting in the audience off-panel. But Popeye is the central character of this sequence of Sundays,...

The first several seasons of "The X-Files" rank as some of the best entertainment television has to offer. They deftly mixed creatures, characters, and creative storytelling together to form a captivating show with more hits than misses. Episodes were divided between the mythology, which explored the series' story arc of aliens and Mulder's missing sister, and stand alone episodes referred to as the monster-of-the-week. I was always more partial to the latter style where each episode brought new creatures and challenges without the heavy burden of deep conspiracies and back story. The show was eventually consumed by cast changes, confusion, and mediocrity, and there's been nothing approaching it's monster-filled greatness on TV since. Until now. "Primeval" is a British show about a team of scientists and government agents investigating a series of time portals, or temporal anomalies, or doorways into the prehistoric past, or glittery light shows from whence deadly creatures emerge... let's...

Chicago – BBC America’s “Primeval” is a wonderful slice of B-movie thrills on the small screen, a great piece of escapism on Saturday nights that is yet another jewel in the crown of this fantastic cable network. Keira Knightley's video for a new anti-domestic violence public service announcement (PSA) will be censored. One of U.K.'s biggest television advertisings, Clearcast, considers the video too brutal to be broadcast on TV. Thus, the advertising company will cut several scenes at the end of the video.
However, the creator of the PSA, U.K. domestic abuse charity Women's Aid, insists that the video is just an "accurate portrayal of domestic abuse", so it has asked the advertising company to relaunch the anti-domestic violence PSA.
