Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were upset in their respective acting categories, but Breaking Bad won the night’s top prize, taking home its first Emmy for Best Drama. It was an unpredictable night in several major categories: In addition to The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels taking home the trophy for Best Actor in a Drama and Boardwalk Empire’s Bobby Cannavale winning for Supporting Actor, Veep’s Tony Hale and Nurse Jackie’s Merritt Wever were surprise winners — Wever was so shocked that she practically ran off the stage without delivering an acceptance speech.

Michael Douglas and Matt Damon give flawless performances in Behind The Candelabra
When we first heard about the HBO film based on the love affair of Liberace and Scott Thorson was going to star A-list actors like Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, based on the memoir by Thorson and directed by Academy Award-winner director Steven Soderbergh, one of the biggest questions was whether the film would be a camp-filled melodrama or a high-brow bio-pic about one of the most flamboyant entertainers the world has ever seen.
Thankfully, Behind the Candelabra, fell somewhere in between to be a solid, respectable telling of the time in the lives of these men and the love they shared.
Yes, there is plenty of camp to be had in the film. Since much of Liberace’s life on and off the stage was over-the-top, there’s no way it couldn’t be campy. But even in those campiest of moments,...

They didn’t call him “Mr. Showmanship” for nothing. Michael Douglas channels the original costumed entertainer (eat your heart out Lady Gaga) and Matt Damon as the lover caught up in the wild world of Liberace. Scott Thorson (Matt Damon) gets picked up by Bob Black (Scott Bakula) in a bar and even drives to Las Vegas with him. The two catch the show of “Mr. Showmanship” Liberace (Michael Douglas) and Bob evens get them backstage and to brunch the next day. The flamboyant Liberace shows Scott around his gaudy, piano filled mansion as well as his “family” of dogs. One of them has eye problems so the veterinary assistant Scott mentions that he could get some medicine...

Put the Emmys and Golden Globes on alert, because Michael Douglas is coming. Earlier this week, Steven Soderbergh's "Behind The Candelabra" screened at the Cannes Film Festival and the conversation soon moved on from discussion of it being the director's final feature (for now) to Douglas' standout performance. It's the best thing he's done in probably a decade, if not longer, a completely transformative turn that's really unlike anything he's tackled before, in a movie that we described in our review as "decadently entertaining." Well now you can get a little taste. A new clip has arrived for the film and it gives away a small segment of the great introduction to Liberace, during the opening section of the movie. Liberace's future lover Scott Thorson (Matt Damon) is brought by his friend Bob Black (Scott Bakula) to see the musician and star in action in his Las Vegas show.

Sex, Lies, & Biopic: Soderbergh Bids Adieu With Sincere, Compelling Flair
In what will reportedly be director Steven Soderbergh’s last directorial effort in the film realm, Behind the Candelabra stands as a superb high note. Premiering at Cannes in the Main Competition, the HBO Films production was actually made for the affluent cable channel, where it will see its worldwide release shortly after. While tongues will initially ponder its position in the illustrious auteur’s impressive filmography, Soderbergh’s swan song (we’ll have to wait and see if it indeed remains so) will come to be remembered as something so much more than just that in the annals of cinema. An intriguing and recuperative tell-all about one of the world’s most famous entertainers and his not very well concealed sexuality, this lavishly and wonderfully mounted film is of a higher caliber than a majority of mainstream American theatrical releases,...

Behind The Candelabra doesn't seem very likely to take the Palme d'Or, but Steven Soderbergh's alleged swansong proved very popular with audiences in Cannes, being a witty and affectionate, if not entirely factually accurate, biopic of flamboyant cabaret artist Liberace. Michael Douglas steals the show as the preening, neurotic but really rather likeable pianist, although Matt Damon proves a formidable supporting act, giving much-needed warmth to a slightly tragic and misguided figure. The film opens in 1977, with Scott Thorson (Damon) working as an animal trainer in Hollywood movies. A chance meeting in a gay bar with Scott Bakula's Bob Black leads to an encounter with Liberace (Douglas) in Vegas, and an extended scene sets out the entertainer's camp charisma and genuine charm, engaging a largely blue-rinse, conservative crowd with a call-and-response boogie-woogie routine. Backstage, Liberace invites the pair to his home, forming an attachment to Thorson that develops...

Whilst Side Effects has received a lot of publicity for potentially being Steven Soderbergh’s last film, the HBO produced Behind the Candelabra is currently playing in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and will receive a theatrical release throughout Europe next month.
‘TV Movies’ have played Cannes before and they will no doubt play here again, particularly as the line continue to blur between the two mediums and American television continues to generate so much incredible work, and Behind the Candelabra is a fine choice for a festival which Soderbergh has such an important history with.
If Steven Soderbergh does indeed give up filmmaking and begins working on television instead, and Behind the Candelabra is anything to go by, the only thing that will be missed will be the chance to see his work on a cinema screen. Behind the Candelabra is as much a film as any other...

HBO has premiered a 12-minute making of featurette for their upcoming release of Steven Soderbergh's Behind the Candelabra, which is set to premiere at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival in advance of its May 26 HBO debut at 9Pm. An extended version of the following featurette will premiere on HBO on May 22. Before Elvis, before Elton John, Madonna and Lady Gaga, there was Liberace (Michael Douglas): virtuoso pianist, outrageous entertainer and flamboyant star of stage and television. A name synonymous with showmanship, extravagance and candelabras, he was a world-renowned performer with a flair that endeared him to his audiences and created a loyal fan base spanning his 40-year career. Liberace lived lavishly and embraced a lifestyle of excess both on and off stage. In summer 1977, handsome young stranger Scott Thorson (Matt Damon) walked into his dressing room and, despite their age difference and seemingly different worlds, the two embarked on a secretive five-year love affair.

A few unorthodox period pieces/biopics are taking form in Steven Soderbergh’s “Behind the Candelabra,” Randal Miller’s “Cbgb” and "Jobs" with Ashton Kutcher. And all three are lining up some impressive ensemble casts, so let’s see who is taking over some coveted roles.
First, we broke the news yesterday that Rob Lowe, Cheyenne Jackson and Boyd Holbrook had joined Soderbergh’s farewell film, the Liberace biopic "Behind the Candelabra." The long gestating project has had Michael Douglas in the role of the flamboyant performer Liberace, with Matt Damon in the role of Michael Thorson for a while now, with Dan Aykroyd and Debbie Reynolds also on board.
