The Gordy subplot in Jordan Peele's "Nope" is distressing for many reasons, not least of which is that history is filled with incidents of real-life film and TV actors nearly meeting their maker at the hands -- or paws -- of a startled non-human costar. We're not as far removed from such real-world incidents as you might assume, either. During her "Hot Ones" episode in 2022, Leslie Mann recalled having to share a "little tiny space" with an actual lion on the "George of the Jungle" set 25 years earlier and realizing that "if he just jumps at me, I'm dead" and nobody could do a damn thing to save her.
30 years before that, it seems Bob Denver had a similar encounter with one of Simba's cousins on "Gilligan's Island." The show's second season episode "Feed the Kitty" saw a shipwrecked lion wash up on the shores of the titular island,...

Just as a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down*, a touch of creativity helps to pep up otherwise dull administrative tasks. That’s why it’s become a tradition on some film and TV sets to decorate the clapperboards snapped at the top of each shot to synchronise sound and images. It’s a bit of behind-the-scenes fun.
*The advice of a magical nanny, not NHS-approved guidance.
And thanks to the BBC releasing the Ghosts blooper reels each series, and directors Tom Kinglsey and Simon Hynd sharing on-set snaps from filming on the fantasy comedy, it’s a bit of fun that Ghosts fans get to share.
As spotted in the series five blooper reel (below) are some beautifully decorated clapperboards containing fond references and gags involving the Ghosts cast. Read on to see the Captain and Havers as Michelangelo’s God and Adam, Thomas dressed as Kylie Minogue,...

“When You Wish Upon a Star” is one of those songs, like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” that’s bigger than a song. It was first heard, of course, in the 1940 Walt Disney animated classic “Pinocchio,” where it was sung by Jiminy Cricket. Disney made it the company theme song in the ’50s, and since the early ’80s it has been featured in the studio’s motion-picture logo. Steven Spielberg added a layer of fairy dust to the song’s mythology when he talked about how close he came to playing it over the final moments of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” For Disney, “When You Wish Upon a Star” is more than an anthem — it’s a totem of corporate magic, a statement of everything the company represents and holds dear.
So what does it mean that “Wish,” the studio’s lavish new animated musical, while it doesn’t...

Summer tentpole films can bring a windfall of money to movie theaters, but the hundreds of millions spent shooting and promoting them require them to be big hits both in the U.S. and around the world. Over the past two weeks, Universal’s “Fast X” and Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” have found success in one, but not the other.
This weekend, “The Little Mermaid” secured a successful domestic launch with a $118.6 million four-day opening, among the top five highest for Memorial Day weekend, while earning strong word of mouth from an audience driven by Black moviegoers.
But overseas, the film grossed just $68 million, less than the $86.5 million total grossed this past weekend by “Fast X.” With a $250 million budget, the film may not have the overseas legs to turn a theatrical profit, let alone reach the $1 billion mark hit by past remakes of Disney Renaissance films like “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin.

Disney live-action adaptations have been hit or miss (well ... mostly miss). One of the biggest complaints has been about the computer-generated images of animal characters. These realistic remakes seem incongruent with the original purpose of the animated features. Disney animators designed animals and inanimate objects with human-like movements and expressions that made their high emotions relatable to viewers — especially younger ones.
It seems difficult for Disney to make animals appealing, emotive, and resemble real life at the same time. The 2019 version of "The Lion King" is one of the worst examples of the realism technique. The lions had an uncanny valley effect, their once-expressive faces reduced to a dead-eyed cipher. A hilarious tweet illustrates how unsettling the CGI is in the scene where Simba notices the incoming stampede. "Photo-real animals look wrong when they talk or sing," /Film's Josh Spiegel wrote of "The Lion King."
So, we've all been nervously...
