Screenwriter Tony Spiridakis wasn’t familiar with the Museum of the Moving Image’s Marvels of Media Festival — which celebrates the work of mediamakers with autism — before penning his star-studded film Ezra, about parenting a child on the spectrum. But he quickly became a supporter after MoM founder and former AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan reached out.
“[The festival] understands the power of empathy and the undeniable beauty of diversity,” says Spiridakis, who now sits on its advisory board alongside Ezra director Tony Goldwyn. “It shows the unfiltered, authentic expression that comes from the unique perspectives of autistic mediamakers, something Hollywood and all artists can benefit from.”
Marvels of Media, taking place until tomorrow in Queens, joins the ReelAbilities Film Festival, which runs April 3 through 10, and is hosting Ezra’s New York premiere on opening night. Both of the film festivals are dedicated to disabled filmmakers and narratives showcasing characters with a disability.

When the Gotham Awards paid tribute to then-IFC Films president Jonathan Sehring, his speech contained a passage that could have been written by Cassandra, the Trojan priestess fated to speak true prophecies that would not be believed.
“Traditional theatrical distribution isn’t dead, but film distributors large and small are competing with more and more entertainment options on a daily basis,” he said. “The digital revolution is now.”
It was easy to overlook the warning in 2008. That year saw the release of Fox Searchlight’s “Slumdog Millionaire,” which won eight Oscars, including Best Picture, and grossed $378 million worldwide. Barry Jenkins made his debut on the festival circuit with “Medicine for Melancholy,” which later would be distributed by IFC.
Sehring left the company in 2018. Five years later, IFC faces a turning point in the specialty film ecosystem it helped create. With the abrupt departure of president Arianna Bocco at the end of last month,...

AMC Networks said it paid three former CEOs –Christina Spade, Matt Blank and Josh Sapan — packages worth more than a combined $40 million for 2022.
Spade, the most recent, was hastened out in November after just three months in the job. She had served as COO and CFO for a year previously. AMC’s executive chairman James Dolan took the helm when she left, simultaneously launching a major cost cutting push — including layoffs of 20% of the workforce as per trends in the broader media industry — restructuring and programming pullbacks. Kristin Dolan, his wife, and the founder of a data analytics firm and a former Cablevision executive, was named CEO in February.
Spade’s compensation totaled $21.4 million, up from $7 million the year before, AMC said in a proxy statement filed with the SEC that lists the pay of a company’s highest compensated executives.

A media sector squeezed by streaming losses, anemic stocks, layoffs and executive turmoil unveiled its latest casualties Tuesday: 20 of AMC Networks’ U.S. staff, or about 200 people, along with the departure of CEO Christina Spade.
The news follows Bob Chapek’s equally sudden departure last Sunday from Disney after a quarter of hefty streaming losses and months of PR missteps. No reason was given for Spade’s departure, but it kicked off another round of speculation about the potential for the cuts being a preamble to an M&a transaction. AMC Networks declined to comment when contacted by Deadline.
Jobs are being axed from Warner Bros Discovery to Paramount Global, Disney and the CW alongside a virtual bloodbath in tech. Today’s staff memo from AMC Networks chairman James Dolan, whose family is the company’s controlling shareholder, was particularly grim, noting that “the mechanisms for the monetization of content are in disarray.

AMC Networks is planning a “large-scale layoff” amid CEO Christina Spade’s abrupt departure from the company after less than three months, per an internal memo penned by chairman James Dolan, obtained by TheWrap.
In the note to staff, Dolan — who pointed to a need for resource conservation following mixed third-quarter earnings results — said that the company has “directed the executive leadership of AMC Networks to undergo significant cutbacks in operations.”
Earlier on Tuesday, the TV and streaming company announced Spade’s exit, though no reason was given for her leaving. She had served in the post since Sept. 9, taking over Matt Blank who held the position as an interim since September 2021. When AMC Networks’ Board of Directors names a replacement, which it is currently finalizing, it will mark the company’s fourth individual at the helm in two years.

Updated, 8:56 Am: AMC Networks Chairman James Dolan warned of layoffs at the media company in a staff memo to employees as newly installed CEO Christina Spade steps down after a tenure of only three months.
It hadn’t been immediately clear what was behind her departure. But Dolan’s memo notes weakening financials. “It was our belief that cord cutting losses would be offset by gains in streaming,” Dolan said. “This has not been the case.”
“We have directed the executive leadership of AMC Networks to undergo significant cutbacks in operations. These will include a large-scale layoff as well as cuts to every operating area of AMC Networks,” he said in the memo obtained by Deadline. See in full below.
“We of course realize that this will cause significant concern and anxiety for our employees and those who rely on AMC Networks for their livelihood,” Dolan said. “We do not take this lightly.

AMC Networks said on Tuesday that CEO Christina Spade “has stepped down from her role” without giving details about the reason.
The news came as a surprise as Spade had only taken over the role as of Sept. 9. A successor wasn’t immediately named.
“The AMC Networks board of directors is currently finalizing who it will name as a replacement, with an announcement to follow,” the company, which operates such cable networks as AMC, IFC and Sundance TV, as well as such streaming services as AMC+, Acorn TV and horror-focused Shudder, said on Tuesday.
AMC Networks chairman James Dolan said: “We thank Christina for her contributions to the company in her CEO role and her earlier CFO role, and we wish her well in her future endeavors.”
A representative said the company had no further comment.
A regulatory filing later on Tuesday morning added some color.

Charlie Collier surprised the industry in September when he exited his perch as CEO of Fox Entertainment for something a bit more unconventional: president of Roku Media. But anyone who knows Collier, or has followed his career, knows the move jibes with the exec’s longtime entrepreneurial spirit.
At AMC, Collier helped turn what was American Movie Classics into a programming powerhouse, with defining shows like “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead,” while building AMC Studios and expanding SundanceTV. At Fox, he navigated the network’s independent evolution by acquiring new building blocks like Tubi, Bento Box and TMZ, and growing the company’s in-house production units.
“I see Charlie as a triple threat of strategic thinking, executive capability and creative judgement,” says AMC Networks executive vice chairman Josh Sapan, who was previously CEO at the company while Collier was there as president and general manager. “He has the best kind of impatience,...

Josh Reader, who joined AMC Networks in 2011 and has been president of distribution and development since 2019, is exiting the company. In her expanded role, Kelleher will report to Christina Spade, who recently became the company’s CEO after a stint as its CFO. As part of the realignment, three additional senior execs will now report to Kelleher: Roy Cho, who has been upped to EVP of distribution; Mike Pears, EVP of distribution and content sales; and Amy Leasca, SVP of partner management. Matt Blank, interim CEO of AMC Networks, made just shy of 7 million in total compensation in 2021, according to a proxy filing with the SEC.
Blank’s predecessor, longtime company veteran Josh Sapan, took home nearly 15.3 million, up from his 2020 level of 11.8 million but below his 20.2 million package in 2019. Sapan is now executive vice chairman of the company.
The change in the corner office took effect last September 8.
Formerly the CEO of Showtime, Blank received a base salary of 630,136 from AMC. He got another 4.5 million in the form of a stock award and much of the rest as a non-equity incentive plan payment.
Neither payday ranks near the top of the media business, which saw multiple nine-figure compensation awards in 2021.
Ed Carroll, who capped a long run at the company by departing last October as chief operating officer, got 8.2 million last year. Christina Spade, who assumed the COO title last November...

This year, AMC Networks will end three hit series — “Better Call Saul,” “The Walking Dead,” and “Killing Eve” — and replace them with an army of undead I.P. There’s “Interview With a Vampire” starring Eric Bogosian, and “Mayfair Witches,” led by Alexandra Daddario, both from the Anne Rice universe, along with next month’s return of “Fear the Walking Dead” and new episodic anthology series “Tales of the Walking Dead” later this year.
Next year their legions will grow with “Isle of the Dead,” starring popular “Walking Dead” alums Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan, as well as a previously announced “Walking Dead” spinoff returning Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride. All told, that makes for five spinoffs of the original “Walking Dead” series. (“The Walking Dead: World Beyond” ended last year after a two-season run.)

AMC Networks hopes to mark a new beginning in the coming year as it prepares for some very big goodbyes.
AMC is preparing to leverage the marketing platform provided by three buzzy series finales — AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and “Better Call Saul” and BBC America’s “Killing Eve” — to drive awareness and subscribers to its growing suite of streaming services, from drama-centric AMC Plus and SundanceNow to the niche-targeted Acorn TV, Allblk and Shudder.
The company aims to gradually remake itself from a cable TV programmer to a content producer and platform operator, supplying its streaming services with high-end shows. The sunsetting of the company’s three biggest series franchises in the same year is a turn-the-page moment at a time of massive transformation in the broader industry. AMC has no choice but to try to capitalize on the farewells of its linear tentpoles.

The promotion comes as Spade retains the chief financial officer role and expands her oversight over key divisions like AMC Networks International, while continuing to steer financial operations, investor relations and global technology for AMC Networks.

Updated with executive comment. AMC Networks is unlikely to bid on Starz, but is “always looking at opportunities” for M&a, according to interim CEO Matt Blank.
The exec made the comments during the company’s conference call with Wall Street analysts to discuss its stellar third-quarter results. Starz is poised to be cut loose by Lionsgate, which said it is exploring strategic options, including a potential sale, of the premium network. Blank, the former longtime Showtime boss who joined AMC over the summer to take the wheel from departing CEO Josh Sapan, was not asked about AMC’s status as a potential acquisition target.
He reaffirmed the company’s focus on cost-advantageous niche programming. “I’m a fan of the strategy,” he said. “We’re just not going to play the cost game.” Overall, Blank said he was “adjusting to the pace” at his new corporate home, “which is quick.

AMC Networks Promotes Dan McDermott to President of Entertainment and AMC Studios, Expands Oversight
AMC Networks has upped Dan McDermott to president of entertainment and AMC Studios, expanding his domain to include business affairs, acquisitions and scheduling, as well as consumer PR.
In doing so, McDermott assumes some of the oversight held by longtime AMC Networks chief operating officer Ed Carroll, who previously announced his departure from the company at the end of this year.
McDermott most recently served as president of original programming for AMC Networks and head of AMC Studios. He joined AMC in March 2020 and has seen his stature in the company quickly rise in the company following the exit last summer of AMC Networks Entertainment Group president Sarah Barnett, who wasn’t replaced. And he took on full control of AMC Studios after co-president Stefan Reinhardt exited around the start of this year.

AMC Networks chief operating officer Ed Carroll is stepping down after 34 years with the company.
Carroll will stay through year’s end. He’s the latest executive to leave the company that is seen as a prime acquisition target at a time of consolidation in media.
Carroll oversaw all business operations for the company and recent years focused on building out its portfolio of niche streaming services and the AMC Plus service.
“For decades, Ed has been the heart and soul of AMC Networks,” said Josh Sapan, former AMC Networks President and Chief Executive Officer and recently named AMC Networks Executive Vice Chairman, in a statement. “He has been at the center of the shows and movies that brought success to the company, and at the center of what has made AMC Networks a great place to work. In a business where credit for achievement can be actively sought, Ed looked for none,...

AMC Networks COO Ed Carroll To Exit, Ending His 34-Year Tenure As M&a Speculation Continues To Swirl
Ed Carroll, the longtime chief operating officer of AMC Networks, has decided to exit at the close of 2021 after 34 years at the company.
The exec, who had a key role in ushering in signature hits like Mad Men and Breaking Bad, was named COO in 2009. He has a five-year contract due to expire on December 31. His departure follows word last month that former CEO Josh Sapan was also stepping down after his own 26-year tenure. The company has installed former Showtime boss Matt Blank as interim CEO.
The Sapan-Blank news fueled speculation that after more than a decade as a publicly traded company, AMC Networks was perhaps taking a closer look at the vibrant M&a marketplace. The home of The Walking Dead has long been bruited about as a potential takeover target, but that decision rests with a small group of shareholders: the Dolan family, which controls the company.
