Pierce Brosnan has been cast in the upcoming biopic on boxing British-Yemeni pugilist Prince Naseem “Naz” Hamed, ‘Giant’.

Raoul Thomas Moat wasn’t the first and won’t be the last self-pitying, self-righteous, narcissistic example of violent toxic masculinity, but he was certainly one of the most destructive. ITV’s three-part The Hunt for Raoul Moat is a superbly directed (by Gareth Bryn) dramatisation of Moat’s last murderous days on earth in the summer of 2010, during which he managed to evade the police for a week and kill, maim and destroy the lives of those around him. He took his own life in a final pathetic act of nihilism, caught by the television cameras in grainy nighttime vision, his sawn-off shotgun pointed at his head. It was the ultimate insult heaped on his victims that he escaped justice. The manhunt around Northumbria as Moat escalated his threats to kill random members of the public gripped the nation. The drama is a tense and faithful re-enactment of what happened,...

If police drama remains the bedrock of British TV commissions, with 2022 having welcomed crime series Karen Pirie, Marlow, Magpie Murders, The Responder, Sherwood and many more, broadcasters also gave us a glittering seam of new fantasy and horror. Last year saw a host of new British supernatural and sci-fi series, from Joe Barton’s sci-fi action-thriller The Lazarus Project and the criminally since-cancelled YA Netflix fantasy The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself, BBC Three teen horror Red Rose, Sky dark comedy The Baby, as well as a new telling of John Wyndham’s spooky children classic The Midwich Cuckoos.
Then there were shows that combined both threads, such as Amazon Prime’s mind-twisting The Devil’s Hour starring Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine, and Pete Jackson’s excellent debut Somewhere Boy. And some new British TV shows didn’t even feature a single murder, like Netflix’s adored Heartstopper graphic novel adaptation.

Camera are rolling on an ITV drama that tells the true story of Britain’s biggest ever police manhunt.
The Hunt For Raoul Moat will explore the major 2010 police operation to apprehend fugitive Raoul Moat, who went on the run in Northumbria after killing one person and wounding two others.
The drama focuses on the innocent victims of Moat’s crimes – Christopher Brown, Samantha Stobbart and PC David Rathband; the police officers who put themselves in the firing line to apprehend Moat; and a local journalist who sought to tell Moat’s real story in a landscape of sensationalist reporting and social media provocation.
It will begin with Moat ex-partner Stobbart piecing her life back together following Moat’s imprisonment for assault. After he is released, he attempts to rekindle their relationship but when Moat realises that won’t happen, arms himself with a shotgun and confronts her and new partner Brown.

Coming to terrestrial TV, there’s Life After Life and The Three, stories about living multiple versions of the same life, and the miraculous child survivors of a mysterious plane crash.

On top of the many British dramas returning this year, below are the many, many, many new UK TV series we can expect to see arrive in 2020 and beyond. Almost all of them starring David Tennant, by the looks of it – no bad thing.

We’ll keep this list updated as new commissions, casting news, broadcast details and release dates arrive. Obviously, with Covid-19 halting production on all continuing and new dramas since mid-March, there will now be serious delays, but we’ll keep you posted as news arrives.

This adaptation of Kevin Sampson's 90s-novel about the Britpop era could have been great, but it's let down by shoddy dialogue and leaden pacing
Kevin Sampson has adapted his own 1999 novel about a fictional Britpop-era band and the result is a mess. A drama that could have been either powerful and moving like Anton Corbijn's Control, or conceivably funny and punchy like Nick Hamm's Killing Bono is just a drag; it's cliched and leaden, and moves with all the speed and manoeuvrability of a submarine in treacle. Moreover, some of the dialogue is frankly bizarre. Liam Boyle plays Keva, a talented singer in a cult band called the Grams, whose unrecorded song about his late father is ripped off by a creepy hanger-on called Helmet (Al Weaver) and turned into a crass stadium anthem for Helmet's ridiculous rockers, who become unjustifiably famous while the Grams languish in obscurity.

The Guard (15)
(John Michael McDonagh, 2011, Ire) Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle, Liam Cunningham, Mark Strong, David Wilmot, Rory Keenan. 96 mins
An eccentric crime comedy like only the Irish can make, but not quite the mismatched buddy cop movie it looks. Gleeson is certainly your provincial Garda and Cheadle the uptight FBI import; the actual crime they're investigating – something to do with drug trafficking – is difficult to take seriously, but casual racism and Americanisation are cleverly worked into a self-aware subversion of the Lethal Weapon premise, shot through with warmth and wit.
Cowboys & Aliens (12A)
(John Favreau, 2011, Us) Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde. 118 mins
A genre mash-up no greater than the sum of its expensive, largely second-hand, parts, this summer spectacle corrals its cast and cliches into a plot loopier than an 11-dimensional lasso – though the title gives you a fair idea. If only it didn't try to keep such a straight face.

Why is it so hard to capture the energy of rock'n'roll on film? That's what Powder writer Kevin Sampson asked himself as he watched the Grams take to the stage
A crowd of some 50,000 edged forward with mild irritation as the Grams took to the stage. The lad next to me nudged his pal, their faces set in that certain way that has become ritual at music festivals over the years.
"Here come the whipping boys," said those faces. "Get the bottles of wee-wee ready."
It was quite some journey that had taken the Grams to this top-end-of-the-bill slot at the V Festival. Paolo Nutini had just finished, the Enemy were on next, with Oasis due to play what turned out to be their last-ever show later that night. So what were a band that doesn't actually exist doing up there on stage?

In a week of grubby airborne incidents Jodie Foster's donation to a California's Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute took us to a higher place
The big story
It's been a week when the movements of large airborne body (allegedly) caused all sorts of trouble, so let's look to the skies. Up through the stratosphere, up where the air is clear, to the far out reaches of space where - if Jodie Foster's wallet has its way - we'll finally realise the dream of making contact with extraterrestrial life. Foster donated an undisclosed amount to the California-based Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (Seti) this week, helping to raise enough money to put the centre's 42 radio telescope dishes back into action. "We need to return it to the task of searching newly discovered planetary worlds for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence," Foster told Afp, adding that she hoped her money would...

Martin Scorsese's Paradiso Outdoor Cinema, St Germans
Scorsese isn't the first person you picture paddling in a Cornish estuary, but Port Eliot Festival has persuaded him to curate a season of evening double bills. His selection is defiantly old school – 1974's Murder On The Orient Express is the most recent. There are sumptuous epics such as The Leopard and The Red Shoes, and classic noirs Human Desire and The Narrow Margin. For more up-to-date fare (and more shelter), the parallel Paradiso Piccolo indoor event has newer documentaries and features including Project Nim, Velvet Goldmine and author Kevin Sampson introducing his rock'n'roll saga Powder.

Mem Ferda as DusanThe Crew is an action thriller, which was released in North America late in 2009, based on the novel "Outlaws" by author Kevin Sampson. The film reveals the seedy Liverpool underworld and the criminals who inhabit it. The Crew stars Stephen Graham ("London Boulevard"), Scot Williams (Dead Man Running), Mem Ferda (Legacy) and Rory McCann. Now that the film has been released and distributed, actor and villain Ferda is able to talk about his role as Dusan in this production. From Film File a German online magazine, Ferda states that becoming the antagonist in a thriller is actually very easy: "playing villains is fun. It can be a form of therapy for the innate evil that is within us all."
Empire magazine has described the film as "an intense thriller," and from Ferda he describes his character as "a guy with serious issues" (Film File). Criticized for its...

Good morning Boxwishers and welcome to your weekend. For those of us in the UK, it’s Spring Bank Holiday meaning a day off, while for our American cousins this weekend brings possibly the biggest cinematic showdown of the year so far. In one corner we have Ben Stiller and his animated museum in Night at the Museum 2 and in the other John Connor (Christian Bale) and the other resistance fighters battling the machines in Terminator Salvation. Who’s going to come out on top? You tell us! And here in the UK, although we have to wait for Terminator Salvation (ggrr!), we can also catch the family comedy or opt instead for one of two Brit offerings – teenage horror in Tormented or retro drama Awaydays. Find out more after the jump…
If you see… Ben Stiller’s museum night guard Larry return to action, this time at Washington D.

Finally, a trailer for a film I've been keeping an eye on since right before it premiered at the London Film Festival. Set in the post-punk world of 1979, the story is based on the novel by Kevin Sampson who also adapted the script. It's a coming of age tale for bored teenagers and involves lots of fighting and looks incredibly well shot. It opens on May 22nd in the UK and I hope we're not far behind.
On the Wirral in the grim early years of Margaret Thatcher’s premiership, the opportunities for thrill-seeking young men looking to escape 9 to 5 drudgery are what they’ve always been: sex, drugs, rock n’ roll, fashion, football and fighting. Paul Carty (Nicky Bell) goes to the game, chases skirt, pores over records in the racks at Probe, and gets to see Echo and the Bunnymen, but his fraught family life and dull job leave him feeling bereft.

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
Lineup after the break.

I've been clocking this for a while now as it's premiering at the London Film Fest, but unfortunately our London correspondent won't be able to attend the premier due to a conflicting schedule so we'll have to settle for what's publicly available, and right now that's a full synopsis and 3 clips! For those familiar with Green Street Hooligans and how good that was, this is a more British version sans any American actors.
