[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Alienist” episode “Many Sainted Men.”]
Set in 1896, TNT’s “The Alienist” hasn’t just been invested in the central mystery of a serial killer preying on boy prostitutes, but also in exploring how society is on the brink of change during the turn of the century. Advances in criminal profiling, forensics, and other police work have been the focus as the killer is sought, but plenty of other social issues have been raised as well.

Before diving into the issues involving Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Bruhl), we’ll take a small digression that highlights one of the class inequities that are experienced by those who actually are supposed to have some power in the city: the police. [Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Alienist” episode “Ascension.”]
The killer of young boys on “The Alienist” is still at large because it turns out that even the police were wrong about his identity. It seemed that privileged pedophile Willem Van Bergen (Josef Altin) was to blame for the mutilation deaths of multiple boy prostitutes — and even IndieWire applauded the move to reveal his identity so early on — but that ended up being a false, albeit intriguing, lead.
On Monday’s episode, titled “Ascension,” the former Captain Connor (David Wilmot) was still stung after being dismissed from his post by Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Gehraghty) for hoodwinking the commissioner as to Van Bergen’s whereabouts. Connor then took it upon himself to track down the miscreant, shot him dead, and then sloppily disposed of the body. But while this act may have rid New York of one child predator, it did not eliminate the actual serial...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Alienist” episode “Hildebrandt’s Starling.”]
Although it had been a week since “The Alienist” had shown a quick peek of its mysterious killer’s face, Monday’s episode “Hildebrandt’s Starling” allows him to own the screen for a significant amount of time. And the results are unsettling in a way that’s a credit to this significant departure from Caleb Carr’s best-selling period crime novel of the same name.
In the source material, readers must wait until Dr. Kreizler and his assembled team of investigators fully create a criminal profile before they start closing in on the killer, and even then, it takes most of the novel to actually meet him. In TNT’s adaptation, however, the killer’s presence has been teased out from the beginning as the show revealed glimpses at the man in shadow in the aftermath of a kill or as he corners his latest victim.

The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

Exclusive: “The future is a fix” in Narcopolis, a thriller set in a city where the manufacture and use of all recreational drugs is legal. Director Justin Trefgarne, a former story editor at Working Title Films who has also worked with the UK’s Ruby Films, Ridley Scott Associates and Film4, makes his feature helming debut here. Heading into the Afm, Narcopolis, which employed an unconventional financing method, has been acquired by the UK’s Altitude Film Distribution and by Canada’s Mongrel Media. (See trailer above.)

Much like in Season 2, Game of Thrones staged a massive standalone battle in its penultimate episode. It was bloody, brutal, and a heck of a lot of fun. Let’s dig in!
Nice touch – for what might be the first time ever, the opening titles only list the people that Actually appear in this episode, making for the shortest cast list ever. Take the night off, Dinklage!
Jon (Kit Harington) and Sam (John Bradley) are on night shift at the Night’s Watch. Sam wants to know what it’s like to go to the bone zone, but Jon remains coy. Sam also points out that their vows don’t actually explicitly prohibit a lot of things. (Like butt stuff?) Jon finally opens up a little: “For a little while, you’re more than just you.” Ugh. Emo has finally made it to Westeros.

The best-looking Game Of Thrones installment yet? Ron digs into season four episode nine, The Watchers On The Wall...
Review
This review contains spoilers.
4.9 The Watchers On The Wall
There are some episodes of Game Of Thrones that are showcases for the writing prowess of Dan Benioff and Db Weiss (and a whole bunch of other great television writers), there are episodes that are dedicated to the prowess of brilliant actors like Peter Dinklage, and then there are episodes of Game Of Thrones that are nothing but spectacle.
Given the importance of the ninth episode of each season, it's not surprising that The Watchers On The Wall is less a plot advancing episode and more of a pure spectacle courtesy of one of the masters of the modern action sequence.
That would be Neil Marshall, who turned a cult classic film (Dog Soldiers) into a brilliant turn in the director's...

Stars: Danny Dyer, Roxanne McKee, Vincent Regan, Bruce Payne, Emma Samms, Nick Nevern | Written and Directed by Stephen Reynolds
Danny Dyer is an actor who tends to take a lot of flak for his acting. In Vendetta I won’t say his performance is Oscar worthy but you get exactly what you expect, and that is Danny Dyer. He seems to lack emotion, or the ability to act it out. When playing a character who is meant to suppress all types of weakness and emotion, the performance actually fits.
Vendetta is a film that wants to be Death Wish, and that is a high level to fight for, I’d say it doesn’t get there, but in aiming so high it actually manages to have many good intensions. Dyer plays Jimmy Vickers, a “special ops interrogation officer” who returns home to find his parents have been tortured and murdered by a local gang.

Craig Roberts led one of my favorite movies from last year (Submarine), so the guy’s got my trust for another couple of movies. Up next is Comes a Bright Day, a romantic drama of sorts seemingly wrapped around a heist movie; Imogen Poots (Fright Night), Timothy Spall (Harry Potter), and Kevin McKidd (Brave) also star for debut writer-director Simon Aboud.
The thing’s been getting a couple of positive notes right before it hits the U.K, and I can see why; what’s here looks good. A (possibly) smaller-than-necessary appearance and a terrible final line notwithstanding, I can go with the flow of Day‘s directorial style, performances, and general atmosphere. (It’s also fun to pretend Oliver Tate traveled to the present day and is working in a hotel.) No stateside release has been set right now but, in good time, I’m sure us Americans will...

At the Berlin Film Festival last week, we had the pleasure of catching up with "Comes a Bright Day" writer/director Simon Aboud, who told us about getting the film made, as well as the status of his Brit-listed script "This Beautiful Fantastic," and what he hopes to roll on next.
"Comes a Bright Day" is your first feature, can you tell us a little bit about getting it made?
Well here's the odd thing, getting this made was really easy. But I've done the pain thing before. It's by no means the first script I've written. I had a script, "This Beautiful Fantastic," which was on the Brit list and had Carey Mulligan attached...and somehow, I don't know, it never got financed. Then I was working on another film called "Sunny's Tale" -- a really a lovely script, If I say so myself! -- which had Freddie Highmore attached.

Commercials director Simon Aboud takes to feature writing/directing with this London-set film detailing a young man's meet cute with the girl of his dreams, and the violent armed robbery that subsequently throws them together. If that description sounds a little schizophrenic, it's a quality that proves the film's making and its undoing; as a heightened situation that forces our leads to interact, pressure-cooker style, the robbery is an inspired setting, but when the thriller elements are foregrounded, the tonal contortions often prove too much, and the legs go from under it. However Craig Roberts, in his first lead since his breakout role in Richard Ayoade's "Submarine," heads up a totally huggable cast in Imogen Poots and Timothy Spall, with Kevin McKidd and Josef Altin (a now familiar face for "Game of Thrones" fans) on bad guy duties. Perhaps it's because of the inherent adorability of Mary (Poots) and Sam (Roberts), but in general.

The Screen Actors Guild has announced their list of nominations for the best performances of 2011. I have to point out that I'm surprised Tom Hardy and Joel Edgarton weren't nominated for their roles in Warrior, because they were pretty damn awesome in that film. I think they deserved a nom more than Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm a huge fan of DiCaprio but his performance in J. Edgar wasn't his best. Brad Pitt will end up taking home the award for Moneyball though. It was great to see Bridesmaids and The Help get a nomination for best ensemble cast. It will be interesting to see who takes home the award on this list, and how many of them will make their way to the Oscars.
Who would you like to see take home the award?

Nominations for the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are in, and Emma Stone is leading the way. Her summer sleeper hit, "The Help," nabbed the most movie nominations with four, followed by Oscar-fav "The Artist" with three and a handful of others with two ("Bridesmaids," "The Descendants," "Moneyball").

Dir: Tony Grisoni Cast: Stanley Townsend, Josef Altin, Matt Berry, Anamaria Marinca Tony Grisoni, the acclaimed screenwriter behind Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and the acclaimed Red Riding trilogy, made his move into direction with his 1999 short film Vanished! A Video Séance. The Pizza Miracle is his third, and most recent, short; and it is a delightfully melancholy and warming tale about the unspoken, and often unrequited, sacrifices that we make for the people we love. As soon as the film opens – with a crackling, antique credit sequence – we are almost transported back to that beautiful Provencal world of De Sica and Visconti. I say almost, because Grisoni’s playfulness is somehow evident before a single image permeates the screen, and the audience were already giggling in a knowing way as soon as the first title ‘The Madonna of the Eels’ appeared on screen over a grainy, stark seaside landscape.
