At Monday’s Television Critics Association press tour, FX CEO John Landgraf sat down with IndieWire to discuss the network’s proposed adaptation of “Shogun,” which was announced six months ago. “It’s daunting, I will say. But James Clavell tried to do that with a novel, and frankly the source material is absolutely great,” he said. “I think it’s really worth re-adapting by the standards of today.”
“Standards of today” are keywords here. Clavell published “Shogun” in 1975 to critical acclaim, which led to an equally successful 1980 miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain as John Blackthorne, a 17th-century English sailor who rises in the ranks in feudal Japan. Period trappings notwithstanding, the whole East-meets-West narrative feels outdated, especially told from the perspective of a white man.
According to Landgraf, the premise will remain the same, but the series will include more Japanese perspectives.

It seems that everything that's old is new again. FX has announced they'll be airing a new Shogun TV series, based on the James Clavell novel that was published in 1975. TV viewers may recall that NBC aired a five-night mini-series based on the book back in Fall 1980 (above). Starring Richard Chamberlain, the peacock network's Shogun averaged 25.4 million viewers for each of the 12 broadcast hours. FX isn't expecting those kinds of numbers but they no doubt have high expectations just the same.
Here are the details:

FX will not be “exoticizing” Japanese culture in its upcoming limited series “Shogun,” the network’s CEO John Landgraf assured reporters during the Television Critics Association press tour Friday.
“I referenced, I think, in my comments that it’s really told from multiple points of view, not just the singular Western, white male point of view, so it’s told through many Japanese points of view,” Landgraf said when asked how the show would avoid “exoticizing” feudal Japan, in comparison to the ’80s miniseries adaptation starring Richard Chamberlain. “And there’s a lot of really fun and fascinating work going on to try to balance the story out and tell it from both points of view.”
The 10-episode series “Shogun” is based on James Clavell’s novel of the same name. Set in feudal Japan in the early 17th century, the story follows a mysterious female samurai and the shipwrecked English sailor John Blackthorne.

FX is traveling back to the time of the samurai (and the blockbuster miniseries): The network has ordered a new miniseries adaptation of Shōgun, TVLine has learned.
Based on the bestselling 1975 novel by James Clavell, Shōgun is set in feudal Japan and follows the clash between two ambitious men: English sailor John Blackthorne, who finds himself shipwrecked in Japan; and Lord Toranaga, a powerful daimyo, or lord, who has political rivals jockeying for his position. The story also includes a female samurai named Lady Mariko, “a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance,...

FX has greenlit two new limited series, “Shogun” and “Devs,” the cable channel announced during the Television Critics Association summer 2018 press tour Friday.
The 10-episode series “Shogun” is based on James Clavell’s novel of the same name. Set in feudal Japan, the story follows a mysterious female samurai and the shipwrecked English sailor John Blackthorne. Other key characters include Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.
“The story of Shōgun has captivated audiences since James Clavell first released his epic novel more than 40 years ago,” FX Networks CEO John Landgraf said. “The themes of an outsider encountering a new culture are as relevant today as then.”

Keeping up the tradition of jumping on renewals, HBO has renewed Boardwalk Empire for a fourth season. Things may have slowed mildly as the show works on getting its feet back under itself after some focus and cast changes (what with people getting whacked all the time), but that doesn’t bother HBO.
I imagine a good part of their theory here, and as I say, it’s a theory that isn’t new to them, is that viewers feel a lot more comfortable tuning in when they know there’s plenty more to come. It seems to be working.
What are your thoughts? Are you still as hooked on this show as you’ve always been? Is the new season delivering what you’d hoped?
Frankly, this whole gas station take over plotline seems to me like it needs to resolve in a hurry, but the show is still a lot of fun,...

Last night the Producers Guild of America (PGA) gave out awards for achievement in films and television released in 2011. The big winner was The Artist, which took home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. As the winner of this award takes the Best Picture Oscar three times out of four, any betting on the top Oscar honor is pretty much over at this point. Read on for the full list of winners. The PGA website provides the list. In each case I've left the full slate of nominees, and winners are bolded. I'm happy to see the excellent A Tribe Calle Quest doc, Beats, Rhymes and Life, picking up the award for best documentary. The Darryl F. The Producers Guild of America has announced their nominations for the PGA Awards and it's hard not to agree with every movie on the list. All of the ones I've seen are great films, and the ones I haven't seen I've heard are amazing. The only two on the list I haven't watched are The Artist and The Descendants, both of which I'm looking forward to seeing. I'd love Hugo or War Horse to take home the top prize though. Those were my two favorite movies of 2011. The winners will be announced on January 21st, 2012; check out the full press released with the list of nominations below and tell us what you think! What would you like to see win?

We really can’t say that 2011 is behind us until award season is finished, and as we get closer to the coveted Academy Awards in February, various other guilds and organizations are recognizing the best that 2011 had to offer. Today the Producers Guild of America announced their nominees for Best Picture. The PGA is generally a good indicator as to which movies will be nominated for best Picture when the Oscars roll around.

Here's your best indicator yet as to what the crop of nominations for the Best Picture Oscar is likely to be. The Producers Guild of America (PGA) has announced its nominations for 2011 awards, which will be doled out on January 21. The ten films nominated for the PGA's top honor include expected pictures such as The Artist, The Descendants and War Horse. There are no real surprises, but the growing Oscar chances for The Help won't be hurt by getting a PGA nomination (would be slightly wild to see Chris Columbus, a producer on The Help, with an Oscar), and Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris makes an appearance on the list, too. There are a couple surprises, though, in the form of Bridesmaids and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo -- the Judd Apatow and Scott Rudin effects in full force there. With 5-10 Best Picture nominations possible for this year's Oscars,...

"The Social Network's" climb to Oscar victory was put to a halt by the Producers Guild, giving its much-coveted Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures to Tom Hooper's "The King's Speech!" (Full list of PGA Awards nominees and winners below)

The King’s Speech won best-produced film from the Producers Guild of America on Saturday, a great courage to its Oscar ambitions in an awards season so far much swollen by The Social Network. On the same night the organization praised Scott Rudin, the primary producer on ” The Social Network,” with a lifetime achievement award. Other films in line for the best-produced movie of the year were Black Swan, The Fighter and Toy Story 3, which won best-produced animated film.
The Producers Guild of America represents more than 4,500 producers nationwide, prepared for its 22nd annual Producers Guild Awards — set for Saturday at the Beverly Hilton.
Producers Guild and other industry honors could improve Oscar chances because many members of the PGA and WGA also belong to the Academy, whose members cast votes for the Oscars. In the last three years, the Producers Guild and the Academy have agreed on best picture winners.

The King’S Speech became the reigning monarch at the 22nd Annual Producers Guild Awards and usurped the Oscar-frontrunner’s crown from critics’ favorite The Social Network. Is it an upset? You betcha! Do we now have a real Oscar race this year after all? Definitely. This bodes well for The King’S Speech enthusiasts, like yours truly, as the PGA and Oscars have matched for the past three years. Director Tom Hooper’s historical drama, starring Colin Firth as George VI, won out over 127 Hours, Black Swan, Inception, The Fighter, The Kids Are All Right, The Social Network, The Town, Toy Story 3 and True Grit.

Hollywoodnews.com: Nominees for the 22nd annual Producers Guild Awards were announced this morning, and if you have been paying even the slightest bit of attention during the awards race, you could guess the 10 titles picked for Best Picture, otherwise known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award.
Regular nominees like “The Social Network” and “The King’s Speech” led the list, paired alongside the likes of “127 Hours,” “Black Swan,” “Inception,” “The Fighter,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “The Town,” “Toy Story 3” and “True Grit.”
