17,000 fans. The reunion of an American football dynasty and the coach no one expected to show. Televised live around the world while the reputation of a man considered “the greatest of all time” sits in the hands of savage comedians and one-time foes. What could go wrong?
But here we are, just days after Tom Brady took to the stage at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles for Sunday’s “The Greatest Roast of All Time,” and the walls are still standing. For decades roast comedy has been a beloved national tradition, once shepherded on TV by Comedy Central. It was a show that often targeted Hollywood legends or zeitgeist icons. It took the willingness of Brady, who holds a record 7 Super Bowl rings, to reinvigorate the format for streaming under host Kevin Hart. And not just any roast, which would typically be shot on a Hollywood backlot and edited ahead of its premiere.

Exclusive: Back in the day, Michael Crichton novels would enter the movie auction marketplace and routinely sell for more money than commercial fiction by any other author. Usually within a day or two. That hasn’t happened in a good long time, but today it might. The book is Eruption, a big scale disaster novel tale that Crichton spent 20 years working on before his untimely death. The novel just went out to studios and other major buyers, and Deadline can share a letter from Crichton’s widow Sherri about the machinations, and why she sought out Patterson to complete the novel. It’s expected to be a big sale, continuing the legacy of the brilliant author behind everything from Jurassic Park, Westworld, Twister, ER and so many others.

Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming series based on James Patterson’s Alex Cross novels is being renewed for Season 2, Variety has learned from sources.
The show, which stars Aldis Hodge as Cross, has yet to debut its first season or even set a premiere date. But according to sources, Amazon was impressed enough with what they have seen from the first season to greenlight the second and begin casting. Jeanine Mason has reportedly already been cast in Season 2.
Reps for Amazon declined to comment.
If “Cross” proves to be popular, it would be the latest successful Amazon series based on a long-running novel character. The company found themselves with a massive hit on their hands courtesy of “Reacher” starring Alan Ritchson, based on the Jack Reacher novels written by Lee Child. Likewise, Amazon’s longest-running series to date was the cop drama “Bosch,” based on the Harry Bosch novels written by Michael Connelly.

Is the truth about what lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston) is really doing working with the NYPD—ostensibly there as an outside observer, but really investigating Captain C.W. Wagner (Wendell Pierce) for possible corruption—about to come out? The April 25 episode of Elsbeth sounds like it will take at least one character one step closer. In “An Ear for an Ear,” after one of New York’s most sought-after plastic surgeons is found dead, Elsbeth has her eye on the victim’s former boss, Dr. Vanessa Holmes (Gina Gershon), who she believes has motives that are more than skin-deep. Also, Officer Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson) keeps tabs on Elsbeth’s whereabouts as her investigation into Captain Wagner heats up. Right now, is Kaya more suspicious of Elsbeth or genuinely enjoying getting to know and work with her? “It changes scene to scene in this episode,” Patterson tells TV Insider.

There’s a compelling idea in anthropology that many ancient werewolf legends are derived from our species’ need to rationalize the more animalistic side of humanity – which is why lycanthropy has historically been used to explain everything from medieval serial killers to cannibalism. While I personally think there’s a lot more to unpack when it comes to tales of wolfmen and women, this is still a great example of why so many of our most enduring fairy tales involve big bad wolves.
And in the world of film, I think there’s only one feature that really nails the folkloric origins of werewolf stories, namely Neil Jordan’s 1984 fairy-tale horror classic, The Company of Wolves. Even four decades later, there’s no other genre flick that comes close to capturing the dreamlike ambience behind this strange anthology, and that’s why I’d like to take this opportunity to...

CBS’s new midseason drama Elsbeth returns to the network’s primetime lineup with an episode that features guest stars Linda Lavin and Jane Krakowski. Season one episode two, “A Classic New York Character,” will air on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at 9pm Et/Pt. Episode three, “Reality Shock,” follows at 10pm Et/Pt.
The new primetime drama kicked off with an episode that featured a friend of Carrie Preston’s, Stephen Moyer. During a press conference prior to the premiere, Preston talked about reuniting with her True Blood co-star.
“You know, True Blood, I mean, it holds a special special place in my heart. My career sort of took off in a way that it hadn’t before that show, and so we all bonded. We made True Blood kind of in a vacuum, and then it aired. […] We weren’t even together. So, we all like bonded over that show,...

Robert and Michelle King’s The Good Wife and The Good Fight spinoff Elsbeth is TV’s latest series about an eccentric non-police investigator using their eccentricities to solve murders, as well as the latest to use a throwback template — we tend to cite Columbo, though Columbo is hardly the only apt reference — to (slightly) freshen up the procedural format.
This is a dual trend I’ve written about and analyzed to death — so to speak — so let’s try something else.
Elsbeth, which transplants Carrie Preston’s delightfully odd and unfailingly effective Elsbeth Tascioni to the Big Apple, represents the Kings in comfort-food mode.
Coming after six seasons of Paramount+’s The Good Fight, one of the angriest and funniest shows of the Trump Era, and CBS and Paramount+’s Evil (currently wrapping its fourth season), in which humor and horror elements capture the perpetual discomfort of modern urban life,...

Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker and Toby Huss will star in David Gordon Green’s “Nutcrackers.” They join the previously announced Ben Stiller, who will play a work-obsessed man who travels to rural Ohio to look after his four nephews after their parents die in a car accident.
Heidecker will play a local deputy, Patterson has been cast as an orphan profiteer, Huss portrays an eccentric empty-nester millionaire and Cardellini takes on the role of a social worker who helps Stiller’s character on his journey to find a home for the boys. In November 2016, Gilmore Girls fans sat down to watch a four-part special that finally showed them what has been happening in Stars Hollow since the original series ended in 2007. While the Netflix revival was met with mixed reviews, most fans still want to see more. The idea of a second revival has been floated multiple times over the years, but nothing has materialized.
As it turns out, the show’s stars have thought about what might have become of their characters following the big cliffhanger, too. Scott Patterson recently revealed his preferred storyline for a second revival, and it doesn’t sound half bad.

Lauren Graham spent a decade in a relationship with Peter Krause before the duo decided to separate. While Graham spent years in a long-term thing, she appeared almost chronically single during her time on Gilmore Girls, or maybe she just wanted to appear single. In her 2022 memoir, Have I Told You This Already?, Graham admitted to dating some of her Gilmore Girls costars. While she made it clear that Luke and Lorelai were only a love match on screen, she didn’t give up the names of her more romantic co-stars. Don’t worry; we have some theories.

Erin Patterson has been charged with five counts of murder after her beef Wellington killed three people.
Patterson, 49, cooked lunch for her estranged husband’s parents, Gail and Don, and his aunt and uncle, Heather and Ian, on July 29. Heather, Gail and Don all died days later, and Ian spent almost two months in the hospital before making a full recovery.
The mom-of-two from Australia was taken into custody on Thursday and appeared in court on Friday. Investigators believe that the group ate death cap mushrooms, which are responsible for 90% of mushroom poisoning deaths.
Patterson has insisted that she did not intentionally poison her in-laws and said that she also fell ill after the meal.
“Over the last three months, this investigation has been subjected to incredibly intense levels of public scrutiny and curiosity,” said Detective Dean Thomas in a statement. “I cannot think of another investigation that has generated...

No good villain is ever truly gone, especially in horror movies. This September saw the return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer, a.k.a. “Jigsaw,” the trap-making serial killer of the Saw movies, with the release of Saw X. This is despite the fact that Kramer has been dead since the end of Saw III, which came out back in 2006. But a little thing like death never stopped the Saw franchise. Instead of literally bringing Kramer back from the dead, the subsequent sequels continued Bell’s participation with devices like flashbacks. Hell, even Saw IV played a trick on audiences by staging a lot of its action at the same time as Saw III.
One of those post-Kramer sequels celebrates its 15th anniversary this year: Saw V, which featured Costas Mandylor as Detective Mark Hoffman, a murderous cop who became Jigsaw’s protégé and continued his campaign of bloodshed.

Bigfoot’s relationship with the horror genre is a strange one.
On its own, the idea of a towering woodland ape is pretty pants-shittingly scary, especially if you happen to be contemplating the legendary cryptid while in the middle of a deep dark forest. However, for some strange reason, that terror too often gets lost when it’s seen through the lens of a movie camera. Maybe it’s the aftermath of films like Harry and the Hendersons essentially turning the beast into an upright and trunkless Mr. Snuffleupagus. Or perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it’s just too easy to make inappropriate jokes centered around its, ahem, big feet. Whatever the reason, the vast majority of cinematic representations of Sasquatch seen in horror just don’t hit the way other monsters do.
Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. One of them is...

Just two bona fide horror movies opening wide this October, eh? And both have existing IP to help get them across the finish line whether it be cinematic legacy (The Exorcist: Believer opens October 6) or a videogame franchise (Five Nights at Freddy’s opens October 27). I guess that’s the result of genre films releasing year-round now. Halloween somehow became home to the sure things that might not be quite as original or inventive to sell on their own. It’s no surprise then that neither had a memorable poster campaign to include here.
Speaking of that. Neither did Killers of the Flower Moon (opens October 20). The stuff Apple put out makes it look like your run-of-the-mill mediocre drama with three heads and a lot of giant text. I really hope it earns a Best Picture nomination just so the alternative poster community can try and liven things up with actual creative marketing takes.

Something about Sullivan's Crossing reminds me of the good old days of The WB.
Everwood and Gilmore Girls were two of my favorite shows, and I still think it's a travesty that the former didn't get to continue when The WB merged with Upn to form The CW.
The CW was looking for a show to harken back to those good old days, so acquiring a series featuring Scott Patterson and Chad Michael Murray was a smart move.
Sullivan's Crossing Season 1 Episode 1 throws us straight into the deep end, taking us into the world of Maggie Sullivan as her life is upended and she's forced to leave her big city life behind to return home.
It isn't a groundbreaking concept by any stretch of the imagination, but it does serve up some vintage small-town drama.
The best part of "Coming Home" was its ability to make me care for all the characters.

A simple family lunch in Australia turned out to be the last lunch three people were ever going to have.
Erin Patterson, 48, prepared beef Wellington with “lots of mushrooms” and served them to her guests. Patterson’s lunch guests included her ex-husband’s parents, Gail and Don Patterson, both 70, and a pastor and his wife, Ian and Heather Wilkinson, 68 and 66, respectively.
Patterson’s ex-husband, Simon Patterson, was also invited to the lunch but was unable to make it. Their two children were also not at the lunch, as they had left to go to the movies, but are said to have eaten the beef Wellington with the mushrooms removed because they did not like them.

Having publicly hoped earlier this year that Danny Masterson would be found “innocent” of rape charges in his retrial, Ashton Kutcher also sought to convince the judge in his That 70s Show co-star’s case of what a great guy the defendant is.
“Not only is he a good friend to me I’ve witnessed him be a good friend to others and the kind of brother others would be lucky to have,” Kutcher wrote Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo late last month as Masterson awaited sentencing on being found guilty of two counts of rape this spring. “As a role model, Danny has consistently been an excellent one. I attribute not falling into the typical Hollywood life of drugs directly to Danny,” Kutcher said as one of many high profile names like Mila Kunis advocating on Masterson’s behalf.
On September 7, 47-year-old Masterson was sentenced to 30 years behind bars by Judge Olmedo.

On September 7, 47-year-old Masterson was sentenced to 30 years behind bars by Judge Olmedo.

Following a rapturously received industry keynote on Thursday, veteran indie producer Ted Hope is the talk of the town in Locarno. Attendees on the ground are describing Hope’s ambitious and expansive speech as the much-needed “kick in the ass” Hollywood Execs needed to hear if cinema has any chance of becoming a much fairer and equitable industry.
Speaking with Deadline the morning after, Hope plays down his hype, saying he still gets nervous before presenting his ideas publicly. But he now sees provoking conversation around the state of the industry as an unofficial obligation.
“Someone once said to me, Ted, you like to say the things aloud that everyone else whispers about. And so I thought, yes, that’s my role,” he said, “I’m going to speak about what is only whispered.”
