Doing its best on a budget, you can’t help but sympathise with this straight-to-streamer that’s so schlocky it’s … sweet
Let’s be clear: this second world war action movie is cliched, wooden and excessively long. Nevertheless, you’ve got to give its director, producer, co-writer and supporting player Michael B Chait and his team a little credit for pulling together what must have been a reasonably expensive shoot for an independent film. You’ve got your aerial dogfights, your period production design (albeit often camouflaged in darkness) and lashings of blanks, squibs and controlled explosive material to make for a very noisy, if tediously protracted, series of climaxes. There are many more egregious wastes of money out there in the world.
At least this one, for all its flaws and completely unironic macho posturing, will please some viewers with its many shots of muscled, sweaty soldiers in vests.

Ambushed behind enemy lines, he must rescue a captured B-17 Flying Fortress crew, evade a ruthless enemy stalking him at every turn, and foil a plot that could completely alter the outcome of World War II. We recently learned that John Cusack was cast as the lead in the big screen adaptation of Stephen King's Cell. The actor is also in negotiations to join an aerial action-thriller called Airspace, which is set to be directed by Roger Avary, writer of films such as Pulp Fiction, Silent Hill, Beowulf and The Rules of Attraction.
The film is described as Duel in the sky, the "story follows a work-absorbed charter pilot (Cusack) flying home to his family who must escape a sudden attack by a heavily armed MiG fighter jet after finding a mysterious briefcase in his plane." That sounds like it could be kind of cool. I loved Steven Spielberg's Duel, I'm a fan of Cusack, and I love aviation, so this sounds like a movie I'd enjoy.

Looks like one of the stars of Con Air is heading skyward once again. Variety reports that John Cusack is in talks to lead a new aerial action thriller called Airspace, with Roger Avary in talks to direct. Most film nerds should instantly recognize that name, but in case you're unfamiliar, Avary co-wrote Pulp Fiction with Quentin Tarantino and directed an adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel Rules of Attraction. Airspace is being described as "Duel in the sky," and follows a workaholic pilot (Cusack) flying home to reunite with his family when he discovers a mysterious briefcase on his plane and is attacked by a MiG fighter jet. Read on! Briana Hartman (Brother's Keeper) wrote the original screenplay based on an idea from Michael B. Chait, but Avary has already come aboard to take a pass of his own, so his deal to direct should come through smoothly.

Say what you want about Top Gun and Tom Cruise, blah, blah. Top Gun was like no other movie before or really since in its accurate and realistic portrayal of aerial combat. In fact one of my uncles’ Navy buddies was one of the head stunt pilots for that film and his one of the mission commanders fixing the Hubble Telescope in space.
THR has reported that Tmu Pictures is developing a Michael B. Chait directed action-adventure film called War Birds, the story of an Air Force veteran-turned-reckless airshow re-enactment pilot who is then pulled into the underground culture of illegal, real-life aerial combat.
What’s even cooler is that in this world of CGI reliance this movie plans to use real airplanes and aerial sequences, including authentic P-51 Mustangs, P-38 Lightnings, F4U Corsairs and a B-17 Flying Fortress as well as modern military helicopters and jets.

The official website has released test footage from Michael B. Chait’s first feature attempt in the form of the movie War Birds. From the footage (which I’ve embedded below) it looks like we can expect to see a Top Gun style movie based in an around the Us Airforce in the Second World War with Michael Bay style explosions recently seen on the Victoria Secrets ad!
The website gives us literally no other information on the movie but fortunately, or friend Alex over at FirstShowing.net knows a lot more than we do about the movie:

Welcome to Flight Club. Yes, production is moving forward on War Birds, the tale of an underground culture of illegal aerial combat. Huh. You wouldn't think they could find many cellars big enough for the planes. But seriously, folks, the story (by Michael B. Chait, who's also directing and producing) focuses on a former Air Force pilot who becomes an airshow re-enactment pilot after leaving the service, and despite his recklessness. Then he gets pulled into "the underground culture of illegal, real-life aerial combat". We'd never heard of such a thing around here, but if it's in a movie it must exist, right?Shooting is due to take place in Michigan this summer, using real planes including "P-51 Mustangs, P-38 Lightnings, F4U Corsairs and a B-17 Flying Fortress" - which does kinda make it sound awesome. We'd have thought those'd be too big to keep particularly under wraps, but...
