A three hour documentary about iconic comedian Ken Dodd will premiere in June, and here are the details.
There are few comics, before him or since, who were as hardworking as Ken Dodd. Known for the epic length of his performances, he performed shows that began at 7.30, wouldn’t have an interval until 10.30, with gigs regularly finishing in the small hours.
Dodd passed away in 2018 at the age of 90, and left a legacy of laughter in a career that began in the 1940s.
Ken Dodd is now set to be the subject of new documentary The Real Ken Dodd: The Man I Loved. As a tribute to Dodd’s shows, the film is a whopping three hours long.
The film, narrated by the irrepressible Miriam Margoyles, also features tributes from the comedy community, including Lee Mack, Harry Hill, Johnny Vegas, Tim Vine, Les Dennis, Ricky Tomlinson, Stephen K Amos, Shaparak Khorsandi and the late,...

Warning: This contains spoilers for Not Going Out
Back in 2015, during a BBC Breakfast interview about series seven of Not Going Out, presenter Bill Turnbull asked Lee Mack: “Did you ever imagine when you first got that pilot that you’d get seven series?”
“I didn’t think we’d even get a series,” Mack answers incredulously, explaining that even going from script to a pilot episode felt like “the biggest hurdle”.
And yet, eight years later (17 since the show began in 2006), Not Going Out has now almost doubled its series from seven to 13, still regularly pulling in audiences of over four million, with the newest series arriving on BBC One on Friday 23rd June at 9pm. As ever, the show will focus on Lee Mack as a fictionalised version of himself, alongside his landlady-turned-wife and sparring partner Lucy, and their eventful and often farcical life together.

Imagine being someone who’s never seen Taskmaster. A virgin to joy. Someone whose eyes have never before drunk in the sight of a banana-Noel Fielding hiding in a fruit bowl, of Joe Wilkinson presenting the mayor of Chesham with 42 Calippo ice lollies, or of Charlotte Ritchie stumbling around a golf course blindfolded like an adorable Minion. What promise awaits! The prize tasks, the flashes of creative genius, the glorious failures… Alex Horne’s challenge-based comedy panel show is one of the most reliably entertaining TV programmes ever made.

At the beginning of every Taskmaster series, the contestants know that they can only wear one outfit for all the task filming, for continuity purposes. So what would you pick? Stepping into the unknown, with all manner of physical and mental trials and tribulations ahead, the sensible bet would be… well, something sensible.
And yet, series after series, we see contestants don the most ridiculous getup to take them through their Taskmaster journeys, including a dressing gown, a safari suit, and an Evil Knievel helmet. And series 14 is no different: three of the contestants – Munya Chawawa, Fern Brady and Dara O’Briain – are sporting particularly impressive themed jumpsuits.
The question is: does a special outfit give contestants special powers? The edge over the competition, even? Let’s crunch the numbers.
Tim Key: 1980s-style tracksuit and headband over a shirt and tie (Series 1) Series rank: fourth
Okay, so we’re off to a bad start.

As many people have discovered during the Covid-19 crisis, it’s not much fun spending your birthday in lockdown. But for a certain 25-foot eating machine, its 45th will be one to remember. Rather than hinder celebrations, lockdown has actually brought together a community of Jaws fans – albeit remotely – to celebrate the anniversary of director Steven Spielberg’s seminal shark movie in a number of resourceful and creative ways.
There have been Twitter watch-alongs, including one hosted by celebrity superfan Kevin Smith, online Jaws-themed pub quizzes and now, launching on Saturday 20th June – 45 years to the day since the film’s release – a feature-length, shot-for-shot remake, created entirely during lockdown in the confines of fans’ homes, gardens, and swimming pools.
A fun, feel-good tribute, the aptly named #JawsWeMake is masterminded by Ross Williams, founder of The Daily Jaws – a website dedicated to the film and its fandom – and Dean Newman,...

We’ve taken a highlighter to this year’s Christmas and New Year TV schedules and circled what we’ll be watching this festive season…
Amid the cosy repeats and cranberry-stuffed cookery shows on TV over the next few weeks are a few gems. When it comes to stand-up comedy I tend to like the comedians that tell a story and build up to a joke. There are some though that prefer the quick-fire one-liners style like Tim Vine…
What I find with Tim Vine though is that he has a style that is inoffensive and easy to handle. You don’t have to overthink the jokes, and many that he throws at you are genuinely funny. I’ll admit that they aren’t ones that are exactly laugh out loud for the most part, but can get a chuckle out of me. The most important thing is that they are fun.
What Tim Vine does with Tim Timinee Tim Timinee Tim Tim To You (yay for copy & paste) is offer a self-deprecating style of comedy where he knows which jokes will have some impact, and which ones will be quite soft on the audience.

When life hurts, well-crafted, traditional sitcom like Count Arthur Strong can be an indispensable salve…
There’s a period a little while after a family death, after the days spent in a traffic jam of errands, decisions and phone calls, when you have to merge back into the regular lane. Normal life demands to re-start. The fridge needs filling and the lawn needs mowing, even if, impossibly, the person who usually does both has vanished forever.
For my family like most others, normal life means watching television. Telly is the cradle that rocked us through the decades. Whatever happened to us happened against a backdrop of soaps and sitcoms.
Losing our dad though, changed things. In the flayed-skin sensitivity of the days around his funeral, flicking through the channels meant running a gauntlet. A murder on EastEnders brought unwelcome ambulances and coroners back into our living room.

The American Gregg Turkington has made a unique study of the comedian’s art. Why couldn’t it find a British distributor?
The UK film industry’s timid approach to comedy is hard to explain. After all, the influence of the Edinburgh fringe has made the British stand-up scene one of the most vibrant in the world, with a raft of performers debuting new and ambitious shows on an almost absurdly reliable basis. If an act as off-putting as that of American character comedian Gregg Turkington – who on stage portrays scabrous comic Neil Hamburger – can pack out British theatres with intentionally unfunny one-liners about the Holocaust and Kentucky Fried Chicken, then why is comedy that pushes boundaries considered such a risk at British cinemas?
UK distributors were apparently uninterested when Turkington immortalised Hamburger on film in last year’s acclaimed comedy-drama Entertainment. In the film, a fictionalised Turkington tours backwoods...

The mechanics and dynamics of silent comedy didn’t die with the advent of the talkies – just look at last year’s Shaun The Sheep Movie. A breadth of remit allows this silent and classic comedy film festival to stray beyond the confines of early cinema, although it always manages to find more of that out there. New (re)discoveries this year include Mancunian comedies (from the studio once known as “Jollywood”), silent westerns and a Soviet menage a trois. In addition you get sound-assisted slapstick such as Cary Grant’s breakthrough The Awful Truth (introduced by comedian Lucy Porter), and guests including Stephen Merchant, Ken Dodd, Tim Vine (on Sgt Bilko), and Marcus Brigstocke in conversation with the makers of Shaun The Sheep. And if all else fails, you can’t go wrong with an orchestrally accompanied screening of Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid.

Not Going Out has become quite the sleeper hit. Despite slipping under the radar somewhat, it has lasted seven series and a couple of Christmas specials.
Katy Wix, who plays the insanely ditzy Daisy in the BBC One sitcom, is hopeful that it will return for an eighth - and apparently there are talks happening.

Creator Lee Mack stars in the comedy as Lee, a fictional version of himself, alongside his love interest and flatmate Lucy (Sally Bretton). Tim Vine left the show after five series as Lucy's brother Tim.
Speaking about the sitcom's lasting power and continued popularity, she said: "What's really lovely about it is it's always such a warm response from members of the public and stuff. It could be Twitter,...

Banging a drum about stuff we love is more or less our remit on Den Of Geek - hence what many readers have started referring to as the ‘inexplicably regular' appearance of Statham, squirrels and Harold Bishop from Neighbours on these pages.
To that end then, we asked our writers which comedy shows (past and present, UK or otherwise, on TV, radio, or online…) deserved more praise, and here are the ones they chose. You might already like them too, or you might discover something new to dig out and enjoy. That’s the fun of it.
Please note that this list isn’t ranked in any order, nor is it exhaustive. It’s compiled from the opinions of a group of different people,...

Frank Skinner is to return to host Room 101's fifteenth series.
The comedian, who has presented the comedy show since 2012, will host a new eight part series for BBC One.
"Another series and another opportunity to study the Great British tradition of moaning from close quarters, with me as the whinge-commander," Skinner said. "I think it's refreshing to know that even the rich and famous have something to complain about."
Jack Dee, Gary Lineker, Bob Mortimer, Jonathan Ross and Tim Vine are among the confirmed guests for the forthcoming series.
Room 101 will return to BBC One early next year.
Skinner recently guest starred in the Doctor Who episode 'Mummy on the Orient Express'.

Celebrity Squares is one of those classic game shows - so we were very excited to hear it was coming back with Warwick Davis as the host! The show starts tonight (September 10), but we couldn't wait that long, so we snuck into the studios in London for a little look at the (very fancy) set. While we were down there, we grabbed Warwick in between filming two episodes and he told us what we need to know about the return of Celebrity Squares...
1. It's not just as simple as noughts and crosses.
"It's quite an exciting and fun game with the blocking... It does get quite intense. There's a lot of money to play for, mystery squares with prizes in. Our final game involves listing things associated with something that celebrity is associated with, so we just had a round with Lucy Pargeter, and the contestant had to name contestants...

With Buster Keaton back in cinemas (The General is on reissue and there's a retrospective at London's BFI), it's a good time to brush up on silent comedy, and this festival, celebrating its 10th anniversary, has done much to spread the word, or maybe the subtitle. This year Charlie Chaplin takes his turn in the spotlight and marks the 100th anniversary of his Little Tramp incarnation, with Omid Djalili introducing an orchestra-backed screening of City Lights at Colston Hall on Friday. The seen-it-all crowd will be more intrigued by celebrations of forgotten stars such as Constance Talmadge, Raymond Griffith and Max Davidson. More up to date, Tim Vine explains why he loves Benny Hill (Watershed, 26 Jan), and Phill Jupitus asks Paul McGann and Ralph Brown about the making of Withnail & I (Bristol Old Vic, 26 Jan).

Lee Mack's Not Going Out returns to the BBC for its sixth series this evening, with an episode that proves there is life after Tim Vine...
The shadow of My Family hangs over the long-running British sitcom. It shouldn't do, but there's little getting around it: there's a perception that the longer a show goes on, the happier it is to rest on familiarity, rather than continuing to work hard at making people laugh. Granted, there are exceptions to the rule, but it's surely no coincidence that many of the most fondly remembered British situation comedies left the stage before they went stale. Even Only Fools And Horses, generally regarded - with some justification - as Britain's most warmly thought of long-running sitcom only had seven actual series, with the last few years of its run made up of specials.
Which brings us to Not Going Out.

Happy Easter, everybody! Today may be the only day where you can get away with overdosing on wonderful, chocolatey things, but happily there's some equally delicious telly treats to enjoy, without guilt, over the entire week.
Yes, the next seven days sees not only the return of Game of Thrones and Jonathan Creek, but also the sure-to-be-thrilling conclusion of The Walking Dead's third season. And of course no Tube Talk rundown would be complete without a mention of the latest Doctor Who episode.
'The Rings of Akhaten' (Saturday, April 6 at 6.15pm on BBC One) sees the Doctor (Matt Smith) and new assistant Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman) on a day trip with a dark twist when they go to check out a festival on the rings of a faraway planet.

Not Going Out is to return to BBC One for a sixth series this April.
Lee Mack (Lee), Sally Bretton (Lucy) and Katy Wix (Daisy) will all return for the new episodes, though Tim Vine will not be back.
Wix recently told Digital Spy that the other cast members "did everything to persuade" Vine to return, but said that the comic had "his reasons" for moving on.
Bobby Ball will make another appearance in the new series of Not Going Out as Lee's trouble-making father, while other storylines will include a jealous Lee fighting for Lucy's attention when she reunites with her first love, and Lee, Lucy and Daisy getting stuck in a cable car on an Eastern European skiing trip.
Not Going Out was originally cancelled after three years, but was later revived by the BBC, with a fifth and sixth series being ordered together after a fourth run attracted impressive ratings.

She's Anna, she's Katy, and together they are Anna and Katy!
A couple of years after their well-received Comedy Lab, Anna Crilly and Katy Wix have finally got their own full-length sketch show, which starts this Wednesday on Channel 4.
As big fans of sketch, Digital Spy were very excited to sit down with the duo to quiz them about comedy, controversy, and sharing an award nomination with Rylan Clark. Here's what they had to say.
When did you decide to start doing sketch together?
Anna: "We met doing stand-up in 2003 and we weren't very good at it! Either of us. We both thought each other were funny."
Katy: "Dreadful... I hadn't really seen any comedy, that was my problem."
Anna: "I certainly wasn't ready to do an hour of stand-up at Edinburgh the following year. So I said to old Wixy, 'Let's get together and do some sketches'. And the rest is herstory.

Jodie Prenger and Lee Nelson have made it to the final of Let's Dance for Comic Relief.
Prenger was the first to make it through, having topped the public vote with a routine to the 1986 Cameo hit 'Word Up', in which the actress dressed as the funk group's frontman Larry Blackmon.
Judges Arlene Phillips, Greg James and Lee Mack then had to choose between Vanessa Feltz, who danced to Cher's 'If I Could Turn Back Time' in leotard and fishnet tights, and Nelson, who was joined by Britain's Got Talent stars Twist & Pulse for a hip-hop spin on Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake'. The trio eventually decided to save Nelson.
Newsreaders Ore Oduba and Sonali Shah and ventriloquist Nina Conti received the fewest public votes and were automatically eliminated.
