Thirty-two years ago, the psychological thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (watch it Here) reached theatres – and this one will always have a special place in my heart, because I remember catching a screening during its theatrical run. Little kid me sitting in a theatre, watching the story play out with my mom beside me. I even remember my mom gasping at the sight of something that happens in the film. Someone else who has an appreciation for the movie is my fellow JoBlo writer Lance Vlcek, and he felt it was time for this movie to get the Revisited treatment. So you can hear all about it by checking out the video embedded above!

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Doom Patrol series finale.] Well, that seemed like a definite ending to Doom Patrol… for some of the characters, at least. The Max Original ended with Cliff (Brendan Fraser) dying, Rita (April Bowlby) in the afterlife, Larry (Matt Bomer) and Rama (Sendhil Ramamurthy) becoming the new sun (as the penultimate episode teased), Jane (Diane Guerrero) figuring things out and the entire underground now existing all at once as Kay as she joins Casey (Madeline Zima) in traveling in the spaceship, Vic (Joivan Wade) Cyborg 2.0 and helping Deric (Elijah Rashad Reed) with his class, and Rouge (Michelle Gomez) burning down the Ant Farm. Showrunner Jeremy Carver takes us inside the finale below. When we spoke about the musical episode, you said that this finale is the end of a chapter. Fran Drescher is best known for playing Fran Fine in the 1990s sitcom The Nanny. The famed actor developed the series and took inspiration from her own life while creating the Queens-born nanny who found herself serendipitously on the doorstep of a widowed Broadway producer needing a nanny for his three children. Over the years, Drescher has spoken at length about the process of creating Fran Fine and just how much of herself is in the character. While she took a lot of inspiration from her own life, Drescher insists there is one key difference between herself and the infamous Manhattan nanny.

Do you ever get the sense the pieces of the puzzle might be more interesting than the final product?
Doom Patrol Season 4 Episode 4 is a Doom Patrol adventure with no (current) Doom Patrol members, and it's all kinds of awesome.
A large part of the awesome is the return of Danny and Maura Lee Karupt. Second only to the Sisterhood of Dada, they are my favorite Doom-adjacent team.
And, of course, there's Dorothy, looking and acting every bit the young adult she is now.
The thing is, adolescence is a horrible experience, and in the midst of all the determined fabulousness that is Danny the Camp -- there's a clever double entendre in there -- Dorothy's internalized angst and externalized anger are hard to watch.
Kudos to Maura Lee for recognizing Dorothy's going through something and reaching out with well-meant advice. Unfortunately, adolescents are frustrating, emotional beasts, somewhat like Dorothy's friends,...

From September 15th until October 30th, I’ll be watching at least one new to me horror film every day, and providing collections of capsule reviews week by week. On Halloween itself, as ever, I’m planning an all day marathon of some of my favourite horror films.
I hope you’ll find it interesting following as I dig further into a genre I’ve always loved, and maybe find some hidden gems along the way yourselves.
Week 1’s film can be found here
Week 2’s films are here.
The perils of Week 3 are just a click away.
Now… Prepare yourself for Horrorthon 4
The Collector (2009) Dir: Marcus Dunstan
Apparently, this was originally conceived as a prequel to Saw, but when the screenplay was rejected for that idea, it was re-jigged as a standalone, which has now received its own sequel, if not one that has birthed a franchise on the level of Saw.

Abubakr Ali, the titular star of the recently canceled Netflix series Grendel, is speaking out about the show’s cancellation and what it means for Muslim representation on the screen.
In Grendel, Ali became the first Arab Muslim male actor to portray a series lead in a comic book adaptation. Earlier this week, Netflix revealed it would not be moving forward with the series. The decision was made after Grendel had done the bulk of its filming but the series was not finished, so there is currently a partial eight-episode season in the can. Producers have the option to shop the series.
In a post on Instagram, Ali noted that “Despite making up 24 percent of the world’s population, Muslim actors only make up 1 of speaking characters on TV.”
“I was really excited for what this role meant to my community,” he continued. “I never thought this business would allow...

Netflix has grounded its adaptation of the Dark Horse Comic book Grendel.
Deadline revealed the news Tuesday, stating that the show had been in production and that plenty of scenes had been filmed.
Based on Matt Wagner's groundbreaking comic book series, Grendel follows Hunter Rose, a gifted fencer, writer and assassin as, seeking to avenge the death of a lost love, he goes to war with New York's criminal underworld, only to realize...why beat them, when you can join them?
That was the logline shared when the series got a formal pickup a year ago.
Deadline notes that producers plan to shop the series around, but there's no telling what paved the way for the cancellation.

“Grendel” is no longer happening at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
Based on Matt Wagner’s popular comic books, the series (which had an eight episode order) follows Hunter Rose, a fencer, writer and assassin who fights organized crime in New York to avenge the death of a lost love, until he ends up taking over the crime scene himself. It was originally picked up at Netflix in September 2021.
Producers now have the option to auction the project elsewhere. No further information has been released.
Abubakr Ali is set to play the show’s titular role. Ali is known for playing Sebastian ‘Bash’ Kamal-Stern in “Power Book II: Ghost.” His other credits include playing Raj Patel in “Katy Keene” and a leading role in “What If?,” the upcoming feature from Orion Pictures and Killer Films directed by Billy Porter.

Fans looking forward to Netflix’s Grendel series will be disappointed to learn that the adaptation of the Dark Horse Entertainment property is not moving forward. The Grendel series, led by Abubakr Ali, initially received an eight-episode order as a part of Netflix’s first look deal with the publisher. The horror genre and mental illness don’t quite go hand-in-hand but movie directors have always found the genre a good way to express and show these problems. From 1963’s The Haunting (and even before that) to more recent films such as Daniel Isn’t Real, real-life problems can always be portrayed in scary ways.
Hypochondriac explores the life of Will (Zac Villa) who as a young boy was nearly murdered by his own mother. She was subsequently put away but despite not seeing her, remained in Will’s thoughts. Now, eighteen years later, he is living a happy life until he starts to hear from his mum in the form of parcels and phone messages. This coincides with Will starting to see things, and although the doctors tell him he is physically okay,...

“Hypochondriac” informs viewers right away that it is “based on a real breakdown,” which certainly provides a new wrinkle on the now-wildly-overused “true story” proviso. Nonetheless, clarity of hindsight is not a major virtue in this adventurous first feature by writer-director Addison Heimann.
The offbeat indie drama features Zach Villa as a Los Angelean whose troubled past threatens to unravel his domestic partnership and his very sanity. The combination of gay protagonists, mental illness exploration, horror tropes, and surreal elements that gesture toward “Donnie Darko” make for an ambitious mix that holds attention, even if the uneven, somewhat muddled results are ultimately more effortful than insightful.
Following a festival tour that includes a midnight berth at SXSW and fitting slot in genre-focused Fantasia, XYZ Films will open the film in limited release on July 29, with digital and VOD release following Aug. 4.
A prologue reminiscent of 1960s/’70s post-“Psycho” chillers...

"It will disturb you." "It will rip at you." XYZ Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror titled Hypochondriac, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Addison Heimann. This premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival back in March, and also played at Panic Fest, Outfest LA, and the Neuchâtel Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland most recently. Will is a young Hispanic potter / artist with a loving boyfriend and a good life, but when his deranged, mentally ill mother re-emerges after a 10 year absence, it erodes the foundation of the world he has created and exposes a dark past of violence he was desperate to keep hidden. Starring Zach Villa as Will, with Devon Graye, Paget Brewster, Marlene Forte, Madeline Zima, Yumarie Morales, and Chris Doubek. This looks crazy – in a good way. The setup with the story is fine, then it goes to some freaky places in the second half of this trailer.

"This is your golden parachute, sweetie, don't you see?" XYZ Films has debuted an official trailer for Diary of a Spy, described as a "gripping romantic spy thriller" based on a true story. This one is skipping theaters and opening on VOD / digital starting in July this summer. That latest from the celebrated indie writer / director Adam Christian Clark, Diary of a Spy is a uniquely intimate and gripping espionage thriller that's inspired by true, but confidential, events. A washed-up intelligence officer is given the chance for one last mission, recruiting an asset connected to the Saudi Royal Family. But soon realizes she must decide between finishing her mission or finding a way to save herself. Starring Tamara Taylor as Anna, the disgraced spy, and Reece Noi as Camden, her reclusive mark. Also starring Fred Melamed, Madeline Zima, Susan Sullivan, and Jon Lindstrom, with Paulina Leija. This looks quite intriguing.

And it's out in less than a month. A recently-divorced guy falls for an enchanting woman's theory that they live in a harsh, alternative simulation inside of a beautiful, blissful reality. When their newfound 'Bliss' world begins to bleed into the 'ugly' world they must decide what's real and where they truly belong. Owen Wilson stars with Salma Hayek, plus Nesta Cooper, Madeline Zima, Joshua Leonard, Ronny Chieng, and Steve Zissis. I love the concept in this - exploring a timely idea of whether or not a delusional world is more interesting to live in than the real one. A must see trailer.

Nanny Fine, Maxwell Sheffield and the rest of the gang are getting back together on April 6 — but not in the way you might think.
“The Nanny” creator and star Fran Drescher teased on her Twitter page last week, in response to a fan who wanted to watch the popular ’90s sitcom online, that there was a “surprise” in the works.
Awe hang in! We got a surprise for you! Announcement this week! Stay tuned! Weeeee!!! https://t.co/DTe4rE6IRc

But the announcement was not that the CBS show’s six-season catalog would coming to one of the soon-to-be launched streaming services like HBO Max or Peacock, as some anticipated, or that there would be a revival of the series, which centers on a cosmetics saleswoman who is fired from her job at a bridal shop and becomes a caretaker to a Broadway producer’s three children.
