Inside Schiaparelli’s L.A. Party With Jennifer Lopez, Designer Daniel Roseberry and Evil Eye Cookies
“The relationship between fashion and celebrities can feel very transactional,” said Daniel Roseberry, the Hollywood-loved artistic director of Schiaparelli, at a party for the brand on Thursday, Oct. 12 in Los Angeles.
All around him at the event — held at the iconic Mayan-style John Sowden House in Los Feliz, designed in 1926 by Lloyd Wright — there were actresses aplenty wearing the label’s surrealist-infused looks.
Jennifer Lopez posed by the pool in a strapless corset dress with golden evil-eye details at the waist. Demi Moore chatted with Angela Bassett and the latter’s stylist Jennifer Austin by the bar, as waiters passed around cookies decorated to look like evil eye symbols, one of the house’s signature design codes. Elsewhere, Gabrielle Union, Taraji P. Henson, Olivia Wilde, Natasha Lyonne (with filmmaker and Xtr founder Bryn Mooser), Regina King and director Janicza Bravo all hung out in a lively large group.

Tallulah Willis has summoned the mama bears. Demi Moore and Emma Heming Willis each came to Tallulah’s defense after the 29-year-old shared a series of social media messages she says she’s received from body shamers.
“I think it’s important to share this, that this happens, that this happens to a healing person in recovery, who has been honest about how very sick she was/is and is working daily to find safety and home within her skin,” Tallulah candidly wrote, referencing her battle with body dysmorphia.
“It felt really important to show you this, that this happens,” she continued. “I’m very thankful I’ve gotten to a place where I don’t become dismantled by strangers words (for the most part). I love you and I like you – myself, buuskis included!”
The screenshots shared appear to show direct messages she’s received from people responding cruelly to her photo posts.

After launching less than three years ago, production company Sandbox films celebrated Oscars weekend this year with a nominated documentary, “Fire of Love.” The company will also premiere two new documentary films, “Confessions of a Good Samaritan” from Penny Lane and “The Arc of Oblivion” from Ian Cheney.
Founding director Greg Boustead tells Variety that the boutique company seeks to share stories that pack an emotional punch, as he felt that element was often missing when it came to the science non-fiction genre. “One of the motivations for founding a company is to find those stories of where science and technology intersect with society in interesting and unexpected ways,” Boustead says.

Filmmaker Penny Lane (“Listening to Kenny G”) is known for her insightful, thought-provoking, humorous documentaries. But her most recent docu, “Confessions of a Good Samaritan,” is her most personal to date. In 2019 the director decided to become a Good Samaritan organ donor – a term given to a person who donates a kidney to a stranger, someone she’s never met and never will meet. Beyond giving away one of her organs, Lane decided to document the process. The result is a funny, intimate, and provocative quest to understand why everyone seems to think Lane is crazy to give away a kidney even though more than 100,000 people in the U.S. are awaiting lifesaving organ transplants. In the docu from Sandbox Films, Lane sets off on a quest to understand the science of altruism, the ethical controversies surrounding organ donation, and her own motivations for giving away her kidney.

We all felt doomsday looming over us when Covid-19 spread rapidly in March 2020. HBO’s all-archival documentary Time Bomb Y2K reminds us that, pre-pandemic, the world last witnessed this level of mass hysteria in the late 1990s (even though the 2003 Sars outbreak was more directly related). In the years preceding 2000 computer engineers realized a mass-scale glitch within electronic systems would incorrectly update the year from 1999 to 1900 as the new millennium began because most computer systems only store the last two digits of a year when recording calendar data. Soon theories about how this would lead to global information systems collapsing like wildfire. Hysteria ensued, prompting businesses to go berserk over tackling this problem and civilians to panic as they sought approaches to survive.
Co-directed by debut directors Brian Becker and Marley McDonald, and executive-produced by Penny Lane, Time Bomb Y2K is a reminder to not rely too much on technology.

"Almost Famous" is easily one of the best coming-of-age films of the past few decades. Just about everyone with a pulse is touched by this road film about an aspiring young rock journalist that joins a band on tour in the early 1970s as they grapple with their newfound commercial success. The cult classic is made all the more compelling by the breakout performance from the teenage lead, Patrick Fugit.
Writer-director Cameron Crowe and casting director Gail Levin were "late in the process" before they stumbled upon Fugit's self-taped audition, Crowe revealed to Comingsoon.net. The filmmaker achieved huge commercial success with his previous films, "Say Anything" and "Jerry Maguire." By contrast, Fugit was "a complete unknown from Salt Lake City, Utah," as the actor himself admitted. Luckily for the 16-year-old, "it turns out that was exactly the kind of thing [Crowe] wanted."

Kate Hudson isn’t getting herself worked up when it comes to “Nepo Baby” backlash. The term, short for nepotism baby, has dominated social media trends in recent weeks due to a New York Magazine cover story that analyzed the current boom of actors with famous parents. Hudson has long had to contend with the “nepo baby” title as the daughter of actors Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson.
“The nepotism thing, I mean… I don’t really care,” Hudson said in a recent interview with The Independent. “I look at my kids and we’re a storytelling family. It’s definitely in our blood. People can call it whatever they want, but it’s not going to change it.”
“I actually think there are other industries where it’s [more common],” Hudson continued. “Maybe modeling? I see it in business way more than I see it in Hollywood. Sometimes I’ve been...

On a balmy autumn morning in September 1999, Kate Hudson felt different. She tried to put it into words in her diary. She’s always “journaled”, once telling an interviewer that it keeps her “centred”, which is a very Kate Hudson thing to say. She was in the middle of shooting Almost Famous – the shaggy coming-of-age story that ignited her career and earned her an Oscar nomination – and had woken up after a night of filming on a cramped tour bus. “I walked outside the hotel and said hello to the light coming up over the hill,” she wrote. “I feel extremely emotional today. My heart is constantly aching. I don’t know why. It’s not that I’m missing anything; it’s that I’m feeling everything, and my heart’s accepting it.”

Kate Hudson has addressed the debate surrounding nepotism in Hollywood.
Hudson, who appears in new Knives Out sequel Glass Onion, is the daughter of actor Goldie Hawn and musician Bill Hudson.
After several roles in the 1990s, Hudson, 43, rose to prominence in 2000 after playing Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous.
Over the next decade, she scored a string of roles in films including How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), You, Me and Dupree (2006), Fool's Gold (2008) and Bride Wars (2009).
During a new interview with The Independent, Hudson brushed off the recent conversation surrounding Hollywood’s favouring of “nepo babies” – stars who have successful parents.
In recent weeks, actor Zoë Kravitz, who is the daughter of musician Lenny Kravitz and actor Lisa Bonet, and Lily Allen, who is the daughter of actor Keith Allen, have defended themselves over the debate.
Hudson, though, isn’t so fussed.

You don't have to love rock & roll to love "Almost Famous," but it helps. From the early days when DJ Alan Freed first popularized the term to the pinnacle of rock in the 1970s, bands like Led Zeppelin and The Allman Brothers had become mythic figures that were worshipped by hardcore fans. "Rolling Stone" magazine had worldwide circulation and was considered a legitimate, respectable periodical that showcased these groups without compromising journalistic integrity. Interviews with luminaries like John Lennon and Pete Townsend helped to launch the magazine into the cultural mainstream while also keeping one foot in the world of the hippie underground.

The musical, an adaptation of Cameron Crowe’s 2000 film, began previews at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Oct. 3 and opened on Nov. 3.
This is the latest Broadway show to announce its closure, following Kpop, which closed on Dec. 11, two weeks after opening, and Ain’t No Mo, which received a closing notice, but is now extended through Dec. 23 after the production and celebrities backers rallied around the show.
The closing notices come as tourism remains down in New York and as Broadway shows grapple with higher running costs and changing audience behavior. Kate Hudson is a band-aid no more – it’s time to actually join the band. The 43-year-old actor has just revealed that she’s going to be releasing her first ever album next year.
Back in 2000, Hudson got her breakthrough role aged 19 as the precocious Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s cult classic, Almost Famous, earning a Golden Globe in the process.
Now, she’s reunited with co-star Jimmy Fallon, who appeared as slimy band manager Dennis Hope, to talk about her plans to start a music career of her own.
Speaking on The Tonight Show on Monday (12 December), Hudson said that she’d been inspired to record music during the pandemic while having a bit of a Yolo moment.
Apparently she’s been singing since she was a teenager, but had never dared to officially “share” anything, until now.

Almost Famous, the musical version of Cameron Crowe‘s iconic film of the same name, has hit Broadway with an energetic production behind it. High schooler Willam Miller (Casey Likes) gets a very-premature assignment from Rolling Stone to write about the mid-level band Stillwater on tour. His mentor warns the young journalist not to befriend the band, but of course, he does just that – and a lot more.
Loosely based on Crowe’s own experience, the musical explores that wistful moment of coming age. Williams’s mom (Anika Larsen) tries to hold him back while groupie Penny Lane (Solea Pfieffer) and the band’s lead singer Russell (Chris Wood) goad him on to self-discovery. Famous hits some high notes – notably the standout tune “Morroco” – and leaves fans of feel-good 70s rock satisfied.
All Famous is now playing at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. Get tickets here.

Fremantle and Carnivalesque Films have announced their partnership on Kim’s Video, a new feature documentary unearthing the stranger-than-fiction story of the legendary NYC video rental store Kim’s Video Collection, which will world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, as announced earlier today, screening as the opening day film of the Next section.
The film directed by award-winners David Redmon and Ashley Sabin (Girl Model) follows modern-day cinephile and filmmaker, Redmon, on a quixotic quest to track down the whereabouts of the massive video collection of the now-defunct Kim’s Video, an iconic shop that once housed more than 55,000 beloved and rare movies. Playing with the forms and tropes of cinema, David’s bizarre and increasingly obsessive quest takes him to Sicily, where he becomes entangled in a web of local politics, and to South Korea, where he tracks down the enigmatic Mr. Kim in the hope of influencing the collection’s future.

There's plenty of buzz around "Almost Famous: The Musical." As a Broadway screen-to-stage adaptation of Cameron Crowe's 2000 acclaimed autobiographical "Almost Famous," the production was dripping with promises. After a 2019 premiere at the San Diego Old Globe Theatre, the musical finally moved its way to the Broadway stage. With a book based on Crowe's Oscar-winning screenplay, some light revisions (like cutting out a non-consensual kiss), and a talented cast, what could go wrong? Sadly, not a lot goes right. Adding original songs by Tom Kitt ("The Visitor"), Crowe's book remains mostly intact yet the staging struggles to translate the charm for distinctive theatre sensibilities.
Growing up with a supportive but overbearing mother (Anika Larsen) in 1973 suburban San Diego, 15-year-old William Miller (Casey Likes) obsesses over rock albums left behind by his rebellious sister (Emily Schultheis). An emerging writer, William scores paid writing assignments, including one from Rolling Stone, to profile the rock band scene.

Being a passionate rock fan in the 1970s was a vocation requiring time and devotion. Go ahead, roll your eyes and groan “Ok boomer,” but there was no internet to call up performance clips, no music streaming services, no dedicated music video channels. There were listening stations in record stores, where crowds converged the day an anticipated new album was released; there was the radio, transmitting a jolt of excitement whenever a favorite song came on; and if you were lucky, there were concert tour stops in or near your hometown.
Friends’ record collections were gifts to be shared, like mini lending libraries. Weekly showcases for chart hits like American Bandstand or Soul Train in the U.S., Top of the Pops in the U.K. or Countdown in Australia were appointment television for teenage music fanatics.

“It didn’t feel like a modern movie, but it didn’t feel like a nostalgia trip, either,” says writer-director Cameron Crowe, reflecting on his classic autobiographical film Almost Famous. “I wanted the musical to have a similar elixir to it.” After five years of work with some pandemic-induced delays, rapturously received previews, and a well-reviewed first run in San Diego, Almost Famous: The Musical opens on Broadway November 3 – with original songs co-written by Crowe and Tom Kitt (Next to Normal, Jagged Little Pill, American Idiot), and directed by Jeremy Herrin,...
