Shamier Anderson (“Wynonna Earp”) and Stephan James want to break down barriers of discrimination and combat systemic racism in the Canadian arts.
On Dec. 3, the Scarborough, Ont. brothers announced the formation of The Black Academy, an expansion of their not-for-profit B.L.A.C.K. Canada, which they established in 2016. The new, Black-led organization will honor, celebrate and showcase established and emerging Black talent, amplifying English and French-Canadian talent and artists across the country.
“The impetus of The Black Academy stems from our long-lasting commitment, deep ties to our community, and an awareness of the lack of opportunities to celebrate and elevate Black talent in Canada,” Anderson tells Variety. “The Black Academy celebrates and inspires Black Canadians, not only in the arts, but culture, entertainment and sports. This is something that’s the first of its kind, and we’re excited to really bring it up and bring it out and build awareness around it.

Exclusive: Schitt’s Creek has become the show to emulate when it comes to Canadian producers looking to find success outside of the Great White North.
Starting as a small comedy on Canadian public broadcaster, it has become a huge hit in the U.S. and around the world after launching on Pop TV and subsequently Netflix and stands a good chance at this weekend’s Emmys. It is one of a handful of Canadian shows, along with the likes of Nickelodeon’s Paw Patrol, to become as successful as any comedy south of the border.
Now, a government-backed scheme has identified six Canadian producers with projects that they hope to replicate this success.
The Canadian Creative Accelerator, which is backed by the Trade Commissioner Service of the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles and the Government of Quebec, has highlighted six shows that will receive help and money to break out in the States.

Washington, Feb uary 27: Earlier, the main role of the mother of the bride was to create the new home for the union of two families, but now bridal registries have taken over that task.
"By turning to bridal registries, we've outsourced to the marketplace the sacred traditions of planning and outfitting a new family space," said Tonya Williams Bradford, assistant professor of marketing at the University of Notre Dame.
"For the retailer, it certainly has increased the revenue. And for the bride and groom, there is a broader net for who can participate, because all that is necessary is to communicate the registry website to potential gift-givers," Bradford stated.
In her ethnographic study with Notre Dame Marketing.

'Young and the Restless' star Tonya Lee Williams will be crossing over to 'The Bold & the Beautiful' in February, playing the same character.
This isn't the first crossover between the two CBS soaps. In 2010, Amber (Adrienne Frantz) ditched Genoa City to return to the Forrester crowd in her original Los Angeles. And Don Diamont's Brad died on 'Y&R' only to be transformed into Bill Spencer, Jr. on 'B&B.'
What's interesting about Williams' crossover is that she has never been on 'B&B' and will play Dr. Olivia Barber on that show as she has on 'Y&R.' The impetus is that a current 'B&B' character, Justin Barber (Aaron D. Spears), turns out to be her cousin -- a secret that headwriter Bradley Bell has been keeping from viewers since Justin first appeared.

Billy Miller admits it: He used to look down his nose at soap operas
"I think my mom watched them a little bit when I was a kid, but I was never super-familiar with any of them," the Arlington Lamar High School graduate says.
"Then I went to film school and my roommate would watch Passions every day. I just remember looking at him and asking, 'Really? You're a 220-pound dude watching Passions?'"
Little did Miller know that a future in daytime television awaited him. "Now that I'm looking back on it," the 30-year-old actor says, "I think I'm a little glad my roommate was watching that show."

Toronto -- Newly resurrected rap label Death Row Records is expanding into film production.
Death Row Records CEO Lara Lavi said her new Death Row Films division is set to shoot "Sons 2 The Grave" in Toronto this October, with Tonya Lee Williams, Dorian Harewood, K.C. Collins ("Flashpoint") and child actor Cameron Miles Jones on board.
The indie hood drama, written and produced by Lynn Stoltz and near to signing a director, features Collins as a young basketball phenom returning to an embattled inner city ghetto after two gunshots cut short his dream of an NBA career.
"This film embodies what we're trying to do with Death Row, to tell human stories that don't always have happy endings, and that allow us to learn from violence and disenfranchised lives, but not glorify it," said Lavi.
WIDEawake Entertainment Group, Lavi's Toronto-based shingle, acquired Death Row Records out of bankruptcy last January for $18 million.

After a three year, self-imposed absence from The Young and The Restless, Tonya Lee Williams is back in a big way. Williams has been nominated a third time for a 2009 Naacp Image Award in the category for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Series. She returned to the soap last September to reprise her role of 15 years as Dr. Olivia Winter and it is the portrayal of that character, for which she is receiving accolades.
Celebrity News Service spoke with Tonya about her decision to leave the show. "I had been there for 15 years and I was tired and burned out. I needed a rest." Williams stated further that she needed to step back to re-invent herself.
When asked why she has remained on the show for so long, she said, "I think of the writers as God. I put my trust in the writers and this is a character that I am proud of.

Chicago International Film Festival
CHICAGO -- Better than an avenging angel, Danny Glover plays a transcending angel in this inspiring and harrowing story about racial tensions in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A stirring entrant in the Black Perspectives section at this year's Chicago International Film Festival, "Poor Boy's Game" is a refreshing volley against racial hate-mongering, from all sides. The film could gain traction beyond the festival circuit.
His son brain-damaged in a racially charged beating, black Canadian George (Glover) confronts the day when the boy's assailant is released. A hard-nosed white kid, Donnie (Rossif Sutherland) is out because he was underage at the time of the crime. The black community in town is outraged by the release.
George fights to control the rage within him as his son endures life as a mute vegetable. Despite his personal hurt and wrath, George struggles to maintain his Christian heart: He does not seek the revenge that his neighbors, wife and fellow churchgoers advocate in their Old Testament, eye-for-an-eye anger.
Filmmaker Clement Virgo does not draw his characters in simplistic good/evil terms: Donnie is a tough, macho brute who is nonetheless disgusted by the hero's welcome he receives. The racist braggadocio of his brothers and cohorts sickens him. With a self-destructive acceptance, he is suckered into a boxing match with Ossie (Flex Anderson), a talented, unbeatable black fighter.
With the respective communities lined up in us-vs.-them furor, George believes that he must do the right thing for his son's honor and dignity. Alone, he crosses the racial line and coaches Donnie, realizing that the boxing match is, in basic intent, a lynching. For this, George endures the wrath of his god-fearing wife Tonya Lee Williams), while across the racial line, Donnie similarly is castigated by his racist family and cohorts.
Glover is remarkable as a decimated father struggling to overcome his own angry demons. It's a towering portrayal, tightly forged and powerfully delivered. As the white-trash brawler, Sutherland flexes uncanny moves of redemption.
Supporting players resonate: Alexander oozes strength and racist bile as the charismatic boxer, while Greg Bryk is frightening as Donnie's racist, wife-beating brother. Laura Regan shows fire as an abused woman who regains herself, while Stephen McHattie is fearsome as a cretin club owner.
In this hard and inspiring feature, Virgo shows that people on both sides of this frightening white-black divide use injustice as an excuse to vent their rage. Luc Montpellier's lighting and framing evoke the dignity and horror of the situation, while composer Byron Kent Wong's score reverberates thematically with aptly brash and fearful tones.

TORONTO -- Canada's performers union urged the Ontario provincial government Thursday to introduce stricter labor rules for film and TV shoots here by adopting federal status of the artist legislation designed to protect the rights of self-employed artists, particularly child actors. But the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists, which represents 21,000 performers, insists that major studios would not be impacted as collective bargaining would not enter the equation as it has in Quebec. Instead, ACTRA is seeking social and economic support for provincial film and TV actors. Longtime ACTRA member Tonya Lee Williams (The Young & the Restless) said Ontario actors are seeking protection for child performers, career transition and training, income averaging and support for older actors without a pension.

TORONTO -- The ReelWorld Film Festival, which is devoted to culturally and racially diverse films, unveiled its lineup Tuesday. The third edition of the Toronto event will open April 3 with the Mia Kirshner starrer Now & Forever and will close April 6 with director Ernest Dickerson's Good Fences, starring Danny Glover and Whoopi Goldberg. Other films to unspool at ReelWorld, which was founded and is organized by actress Tonya Lee Williams, include the North American premiere of the Bollywood hit Escape From Taliban: A True Story, by India's Ujjal Chatterjee, and Una Casa con Vista al Mar (A House With a View of the Sea), from Venezuela's Alberto Arvelo Mendoza. U.S. films in the lineup include Eric Byler's romantic drama Charlotte Sometimes; Rick Derby's Rocks With Wings, a documentary centering on a girl's basketball team on a New Mexican Navajo reservation; and Bobby Houston's documentary Mighty Times: The Legacy of Rosa Parks. Among the 65 films that will unspool at the festival are 26 fiction features, 15 world premieres and 30 Canadian premieres. "This is a festival that wants to propel the careers of diversity actors and filmmakers and reflect the diversity of Canada on the big and small screen," Williams said at a news conference here. Raised in Toronto, Williams (The Young & the Restless) divides her time between acting in Los Angeles and business in Toronto, which includes a public relations agency and the ReelWorld Foundation. This year's festival will include a trade forum and gala evening screenings and will conclude with an awards presentation.
