Troy Baker knew that stepping onto the set of the HBO adaptation of “The Last of Us” would be an interesting experience. But he didn’t expect it to feel so uniquely “wonderful.”
The actor played Joel in The Last of Us video game franchise, a role that required much more than mere voice acting. As Joel and Ellie, Baker and Ashley Johnson also provided motion capture for their characters, essentially acting out the games’ entire storylines in front of a green screen, for the animators to use as a reference.
Now, as Pedro Pascal embodies the role of Joel in the series, Baker said it’s been a “unique experience” to watch another take on the character.
“What I love is that he’s not trying to ape anything that we’ve done before,” Baker praised Pascal, calling the actor “incredibly kind and incredibly gracious.”

This year’s Oscars telecast incorporated reunions of cast members from classic movies such as “The Godfather,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Juno.” Last year’s Tony Awards actually did something similar, bringing together cast members from different Broadway classics such as “Hairspray,” “Ragtime,” “Rent,” and “Wicked” for performances as the industry was fighting to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the Tonys will be presenting their landmark 75th annual ceremony this year, I think it would be even more fitting if they reunite more co-stars from Broadway classics of yesteryear to perform or even present awards. Here are some suggestions. Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which you’d most like to see.

London and Broadway's original Jean Valjean, Colm Wilkinson, performed the role of the Bishop for a special performance of Les Miserables Saturday evening, January 11 in Toronto at the Princess of Wales Theatre alongside Broadway's next Valjean, Ramin Karimloo, who will star in Cameron Mackintosh's new production of the legendary musical beginning March 1 at the Imperial Theatre. Wilkinson passed the torch - and the silver candlesticks - to Karimloo in a special benefit performance for five different Toronto charities Casey House, Covenant House, Ernestine's, The Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa and Theatre 20. Wilkinson and Karimloo brought down the house with a special curtain call duet of Bring Him Home. The Iranian-born Karimloo, who grew up in Toronto, has idolized Wilkinson since he was 12 and saw him perform in the title role in The Phantom of the Opera in Toronto. Karimloo went on to star as the Phantom in London, and since this November,...

Today marks the 26th anniversary of the Broadway premiere of Les Miserables, the third-longest running musical in the history of the Great White Way. The ultra famous production, starring Irish tenor Colm Wilkinson and Brit Frances Ruffelle, lasted an impressive 16 years on Broadway, racking up a total of 6,680 performances. But did you know the critics weren't crazy about the show when it first came out?
Similar to, say, the mixed public opinion surrounding present Les Mis star, Anne Hathaway, writers and reviewers landed on both sides of the fence after Trevor Nunn and John Caird showcased their adapted musical, first in the UK and later in New York City. While one reviewer deemed the work "a wonderful human pageant," another had far less nice things to say, describing the musical as "witless and synthetic entertainment."

"One-man medleys" — the phenomenon in which talented YouTubers record, edit, and sync their own voices singing in harmony — are innumerable on YouTube. But recently, one viral video and one perennially popular 15-year-old musical have combined to produce an irresistible combination.
That's right. It's a YouTube theatre crowded with one-person renditions of "Les Misérables," and we flock to it like students to a barricade.
Oh, YouTube, you know what we like.
Popular ever since its 1986 premiere in the West End, "Les Mis's" giant cast and string of powerhouse ballads and eminently singable ensemble numbers have proved a lethal combination for audiences ever since. Now, with the advent of the film, YouTube is rediscovering its love for revolution and counterpoint.

Film: "Les Miserables"; Cast: Aaron Tveit, Amanda Seyfried, Anne Hathaway, Colm Wilkinson, Eddie Redmayne, Helena Bonham Carter, Hugh Jackman, Isabelle Allen, Russell Crowe, Sacha Baron Cohen and Samantha Barks; Director: Tom Hooper; Rating: ****
Sad stories sell like hot cakes and "Les Miserables" tugs at your heart strings. An adaptation from Victor Hugo's eponymous book, it is not a historical story, but a classic tale of humanity, love and loss set against the backdrop of a political uprising in France, the French Revolution.
Directed by Tom Hooper, who had earlier done "The King's Speech", "Les Miserables" is a spectacular blockbuster. From the first to the last frame, the film enthralls you like a magnum opus.

Stars: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Isabelle Allen, Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks, Eddie Redmayne, Colm Wilkinson | Written by Victor Hugo, William Nicholson | Directed by Tom Hooper
Victor Hugo’s epic novel Les Miserables is no stranger to big screen adaptations, with close to fifty different versions in various languages, but Tom Hooper’s version, (Oscar winning director of The King’s Speech) the first to adapt the stage musical, is possibly the grandest and most ambitious to date. The story begins as Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is released on parole after 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread, and trying to escape. However he breaks parole, in attempt to make a better life for himself,...

Like a diabolically potent combination of Lionel Bart and Leni Riefenstahl, the movie version of Les Misérables has arrived, based on the hit stage show adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel set among the deserving poor in 19th-century France, which climaxes with the anti-monarchist Paris uprising of 1832. Even as a non-believer in this kind of "sung-through" musical, I was battered into submission by this mesmeric and sometimes compelling film, featuring a performance of dignity and intelligence from Hugh Jackman, and an unexpectedly vulnerable singing turn from that great, big, grumpy old bear, Russell Crowe. With the final rousing chorus of "Do you hear the people sing?", the revolutionary-patriotic fervour is so bizarrely stirring, you'll feel like marching out of the cinema, wrapped in the tricolour, and travelling to Russia to...

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
Oscar nominations are right around the corner (January 10), so I thought I’d use the opportunity to highlight some people I really hope get nominated. It would be easy to make this an overall list of things I want to happen – basically Les Misérables and Django Unchained for everything (it was a very merry Christmas, indeed) – but I wanted to narrow it down a bit more. While there are a lot of Oscar veterans in the running for nominations, I’ll be focusing on some folks who are vying for their first.
Now, to keep it somewhat manageable I’ll only be including people who have some modicum of hope, however slim at this late stage. Take Quvenzhané Wallis from Beasts of the Southern Wild. She still has a real shot, so she might be on here (spoiler alert: she is not...

A visually impressive adaptation of Les Miserables comes to the screen under the direction of Tom Hooper. It's one of the best interpretations of the book to date. This film is one of the finest movies of the year and will likely be remembered at Oscar time.
There have been many screen adaptations of Victor Hugo's classic novel Les Miserables over the years, both on TV and on the big screen. This latest version is not so much a new interpretation of the book as it is a filmed version of the long-running musical play. The film follows the play very accurately and brings the songs from Broadway to the big screen. In a new interview, Hugh explains the incredible lengths he went to bring Jean Valjean to life.
There’s no doubt about it: When Les Miserables hits theaters Dec. 25, audiences will witness Hugh Jackman‘s most powerful and demanding role to date. Thief-turned-mayor Jean Valjean is “the kind of role you dream of playing,” Hugh says in a new interview, though he’s also quick to note that the role didn’t come easy.
“I think musicals are the Mount Everest of movie-making,” he says. “I don’t think there’s anything more difficult to pull off.”
Hugh Jackman’s ‘Les Mis’ Fitness Plan:
Not only did Hugh put his body through the ringer for this movie — he has virtually no fat on his body and looks crazy-good — but he also had to pay extra special attention to his voice, as there were some days when he sang 10 to 12 hours a day.

With its release date just days away, a new clip and two featurettes have hit the web for Tom Hooper’s epic adaptation of the hit Broadway musical “Les Misérables.” First up is a clip that shows the beginning of thief Jean Valjean’s second chance at life when his victim, the Bishop (Colm Wilkinson), saves him after he’s caught stealing silver. It’s a short clip, but it’s a pretty important moment in Valjean’s arc. The two featurettes delve into both Valjean and the Bishop, with the first featuring some great behind-the-scenes footage of Hugh Jackman in character and talking about his method of preserving his voice: no coffee, no dairy, 8 hours of sleep, hot water with lemon, and vows of silences. The second featurette should be interesting to fans of the original musical as it focuses on Wilkinson who was the first actor to play Valjean.

-- Tom Hooper's extravaganza, big-screen telling of the beloved musical "Les Miserables" is as relentlessly driven as the ruthless Inspector Javert himself. It simply will not let up until you've Felt Something – powerfully and repeatedly – until you've touched the grime and smelled the squalor and cried a few tears of your own.
It is enormous and sprawling and not the slightest bit subtle. But at the same time it's hard not to admire the ambition that drives such an approach, as well as Hooper's efforts to combine a rousing, old-fashioned musical tale with contemporary and immediate aesthetics. There's a lot of hand-held camerawork here, a lot of rushing and swooping through the crowded, volatile slums of Victor Hugo's 19th-century France.
Two years after the release of his inspiring, crowd-pleasing "The King's Speech," winner of four Academy Awards including best picture, Hooper has vastly expanded his scope but also jettisoned all remnants of restraint.

Verisimilitude can be a terrible trap. Film is an inherently contrived medium, one nevertheless capable of insinuating itself into realms real, imaginary and psychic through cunning, trickery, and time-honored craft. But, for better and (usually) worse, the existence of the medium’s hidden powers doesn’t stop some contemporary filmmakers from tweaking established conventions in the hope of creating a more “realistic” experience.
Take Britain’s Tom Hooper, for instance. Given any chance, he’ll extol the virtues of his new filmic adaptation of the musical version of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. He’ll doubtlessly mention that it features live, in-camera vocal performances, forgoing the standard film-musical practice of utilizing studio-honed vocal performances that are then synced to the actors’ filmed performances. (Or, heaven forbid, hiring professional singers to handle that aspect.) His directorial style, which makes use...

Title: Les Misérables Directed By: Tom Hooper Starring: Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Eddie Redmayne, Samantha Barks, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter, Isabelle Allen, Aaron Tveit, Colm Wilkinson, Daniel Huttlestone I never cared much for “Les Misérables” back when every other girl in my class had to sing “Castle on a Cloud” at the school talent show and, it turns out, I don’t care all that much for it in movie form either, even when it’s an immensely impressive production. In case you’re like me and never bothered to see the musical or read the book, “Les Misérables” focuses on Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), a man [ Read More ]

Les Misérables
Directed by: Tom Hooper
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway
Rating: Not Yet Rated
Release Date: December 14, 2012
Trailer Score: 10/10
Thoughts by Tsr: Thanks in large part to Anne Hathaway’s performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” – it’s not technically perfect, but recording the songs live helps make the vocals incredibly raw and powerful – I had chills for the entirety of this trailer. But the images the music plays over are just as striking, from the shot of Hathaway’s Fantine getting her hair chopped off to the sweeping shots of the barricade. It seems impossible that the film will be able to maintain this level of emotion, but based on the source material and the talent involved, I have faith that Les Misérables is going to be something great.

Les Misérables trailer: Anne Hathaway sings Les Misérables trailer is out. (Please scroll down.) You can hear Anne Hathaway‘s miserable Fantine singing "I dreamed that love would never die … I had a dream my life would be so different from this hell I’m living." All the while, dialogue-less bits from the film are shown featuring Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Inspector Javert, Amanda Seyfried as Crosette, and Eddie Redmayne as Marius. I believe that even those who aren’t fans of modern Hollywood musicals (or Broadway musicals) will agree that the Les Misérables trailer looks impressive. As for Anne Hathaway’s rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream," it sounds equally impressive. Best Actress Oscar nod? Another question: Apart from the pathological Javert, why aren’t the villains shown in the trailer? Or did I miss them? The big-screen version of Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil’s Tony Award-winning stage musical,...

As the ill-fated Fantine in Les Misérables, Anne Hathaway has a keen distinction: She delivers the long-running stage show's first-act lament "I Dreamed a Dream" in the upcoming, all-star movie version, whose trailer has just been released (see below, and turn up the volume). From the sound of it, the actress and former Oscar host, 29, boasts an impressive set of pipes, and the number, which has been known to bring a tear to theater audiences, sounds as haunting as ever. Hathaway costars in the musical epic alongside Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen, Colm Wilkinson and others.
