Adapting the biography of a singular figure is hard enough, but how do you adapt the autobiography of a band? Bassist Nikki Sixx, guitarist Mick Mars, drummer Tommy Lee, and Vince Neil joined forces to make Mötley Crüe, one of the most successful bands of the 1980s and well-documented hedonist troublemakers.
In 2001, all four members of the band along with Neil Strauss released an autobiography called "The Dirt," describing the group as "the world's most notorious rock band." The book shot to the top 10 on the New York Times Best Seller list and stayed there for 10 weeks. On a personal note, I used the book as the subject of my own freshman year biography project book report in 2004, when I showed up to school dressed like Nikki Sixx and delivered my presentation in full character ... much to my teacher's chagrin.

Brendan Fraser and Adam Sandler first jammed together in the 1994 comedy “Airheads,” playing two members of a band so desperate to make it big that they hijack a radio station. The musically inept Lone Rangers — Steve Buscemi was the bassist — would soon be in high demand in Hollywood, but Sandler reveals in our conversation that he had to fight to get Fraser cast as singer Chazz Darby.
Back then, Fraser was best known for playing an unfrozen caveman in “Encino Man,” opposite Pauly Shore. Soon enough, his career exploded, with studio vehicles including “The Mummy,” “George of the Jungle” and “Bedazzled.” And to this day, Sandler, who’s at the top of his game as an NBA coach in Netflix’s “Hustle,” is still rooting for Fraser. “You crushed me,” says Sandler of Fraser’s comeback role as a 600-pound English teacher in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale.” Since the film premiered at Venice,...

While many may know Vin Diesel as the tank top-wearing, Corona-drinking man that's all about family from the "Fast & Furious" franchise, it's easy to forget that Diesel's reach goes well beyond just one franchise. Diesel has appeared in the MCU, led the "Riddick" series, and will even be in James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water" later this year. But there's another franchise that starred Diesel that launched around the same time as the "Fast & Furious" franchise.
In 2002, just a year after the inaugural film in the "Fast & Furious" franchise, "The Fast and the Furious, opened in theaters, another action film called "xXx" came out. Diesel once again teamed up with Rob Cohen and Neal H. Moritz, who directed and produced "The Fast and the Furious," respectively, on the film.

The streaming debut of Gillian Flynn’s Amazon series “Utopia” this weekend marks a long time coming for the project, an adaptation of the 2013 British series of the same name. Flynn originally developed the project with her “Gone Girl” director David Fincher for HBO, but Fincher walked away after HBO balked at giving him his desired budget. Unfortunately, “Utopia” is far from the only lost Fincher-hbo project. Around the same time, Fincher was developing “Videosyncrazy,” a comedy series based on his experience in the music video world. The show followed a novice production assistant thrust into the chaos that was the dawn of the music video age in the 1980s.
In a new interview with The Ringer, Fincher’s “Videosyncrazy” co-writer Rich Wilkes reflects on the HBO comedy series that never was. The show, which went by the working titles “Living on Video” and “Video Synchronicity,” filmed episodes in the...

Are you fucking kidding me?!
You probably uttered this statement in awe at least a few times, dear readers of The Dirt, when you picked up Motley Crue’s 2001 memoir about their life and times as world-class degenerates. Less a biography than a police rap sheet in book form, it’s the sort of glorious backstage tell-all that makes you feel like you can’t turn the pages fast enough; only Hammer of the Gods can compete with it as the ultimate tale of rock stars outdoing Roman emperors in terms of debauchery.

Usually, biopics like to focus on prestigious figures. Artists, musicians, politicians, basically historical individuals of all stripes. Every so often, however, a film seeks to look at a horse of a different color. That can be a breath of fresh air, seeing a cinematic depiction of an unusual public figure or figures. Unfortunately, in the case of The Dirt, this biopic is complete and utter trash. We live in divided times, but hopefully cinema fans of all shapes and sizes, let alone political affiliations, can come together and realize how terrible this flick is. Dirt is an apt description of this one, and that’s putting it mildly. The movie is a biopic about the band Mötley Crüe. Based on an autobiography written by the band members, this claims to be “an unflinching tale of success and excess as four misfits rise from the streets of Hollywood to the heights of international fame.

A long time ago, the words sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll carried a hint of danger. The lifestyle did, too, but I’m talking about the phrase. It used to sound cool (back around the time the word “cool” sounded cool). But sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll has long since passed into the realm of vintage American catch-phrase banality, like “How’s that workin’ out for you?” And “The Dirt,” the new Netflix rock biopic about the sordid, squalid saga of Mötley Crüe, the royal hair-metal sleaze gods of the ’80s and ’90s, is a movie that reflects the new harmless status of that phrase.
“The Dirt” boils over with sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, whether it’s Vince Neil (Daniel Webber), the snaky leader singer of Mötley Crüe, acting like a horny jackrabbit as he enjoys a backstage boink with every woman who comes near him,...

If you’re a fan of Mötley Crüe, then you’ll probably love the movie they made about themselves.
Early on in The Dirt, Mötley Crüe lead guitarist Mick Mars (Iwan Rheon) turns to the camera. “This didn’t actually happen,” he says of the scene that’s just transpired, which involves the band meeting future manager Doc McGhee (David Costabile) at a house party. “Doc never came to this filthy shithole. We met him at the Santa Monica Civic Center after a show.”
On the one hand, it’s a fleetingly sweet attempt to credit McGhee’s business partner, Doug Thaler, who also helped to manage the band. On the other hand, it’s one of many attempts by the filmmakers to make sure the audience knows that yes, this is just a movie, and no, not everything that happens onscreen is going to be based on the truth.

It’s taken eighteen years for Motley Crue biopic The Dirt to go from print to screen. Long-time manager Allen Kovac, who is exec producing the Netflix feature film, tells Deadline why it took so long to adapt the memoir and how they wanted to create “Boogie Nights-meets-Goodfellas” set in the debaucherous world of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.
The film, which debuts on the Svod platform on March 22, tells the story of notorious Sunset Strip glamrockers Motley Crue – Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars and is based on Neil Strauss’ book The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band, which was published in 2001.
It’s a raucous story that includes rampant drug abuse – Sixx was famously pronounced dead after a heroin overdose – manslaughter – Neil killed his passenger in a 1985 drunk driving accident – and the film opens with a graphic oral sex scene involving Tommy Lee.

Netflix has dropped the first trailer for its Motley Crue biopic “The Dirt” — based on Neil Strauss’ best-selling history of the legendarily bad-behaved ‘80s metal icons — and it looks like the film pulls no punches in terms of the band’s famously sordid history.
In this two-minute trailer, we get glimpses of singer Vince Neil’s 1984 car wreck that killed Hanoi Rocks drummer Razzle (as well as the death from cancer of Neil’s 4-year-old daughter several years later), bassist/songwriter Nikki Sixx’s heroin addiction, guitarist Mick Mars’ age and degenerative bone disease, and Tommy Lee’s marriage to TV star Heather Locklear and all-around unhinged behavior.
Industry insiders will probably be tickled to see “SNL” star Pete Davidson as the band’s A&R man, Tom Zutaut.
While much of this territory has been covered in the VH1 “Behind the Music” on the group, judging by the trailer the...

If you thought the story of “Bohemian Rhapsody” was nuts, “The Dirt” and its look at the formation of Mötley Crüe will really rock you.
Mötley Crüe was one of the most notorious ’80s hair metal bands in the country, arguably known more for their antics offstage and their lavish, outrageous performances than their music. “The Dirt,” a new music biopic based on the salacious autobiography by the band and Neil Strauss, taps into that insanity.
“The fans? They’re dying for some anarchy. So let’s give it to them,” one of the bandmates says in the film.

Fans are dying for some anarchy in first trailer for "Dirt," Netflix’s Mötley Crüe biopic.
"Be strong and rock hard," Mötley Crüe advised. And when you deliver, "shout at the devil.” Netflix dropped the first Mötley Crüe biopic The Dirt trailer and it looks like the world's most notorious band had a blast earning that reputation. The film won't cop out on the band's more controversial and painful moments. Nikki Sixx’s Dec. 23, 1987 party til you die party with Slash and Steven Adler from Guns N’ Roses and Ratt’s Robbin Crosby; Tommy Lee’s stormy marriage to Heather Locklear; Mick Mars’ bone disease diagnosis, and the car crash that killed Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas “Razzle” Dingley and put Vince Neil in jail will all get celluloid treatment.

For years, various studios have been trying to make an adaptation of Motley Crüe tell-all book The Dirt: Confessions Of The World’s Most Notorious Rock Band—which was written by band members Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, Mick Mars, and Nikki Sixx along with author Neil Strauss—but Netflix is finally making the project happen. According to Deadline, Netflix is “in talks” to pick up the project, with Rich Wilkes and Californication creator Tom Kapinos writing the script and Jackass’ Jeff Tremaine directing.
The movie will be titled Dirt, and as a Motley Crüe biopic, it will follow the story of the band’s life through all of the crazy ups and horrifying downs—from deadly car crashes and heroin overdoses, to dramatic falling-outs between band members. The Deadline story doesn’t have any casting information, but it should be fun to see who they find to star in this.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes and clips and puts it all in perspective. When I was a young writer (or younger writer, I mean what is age?), I had a meeting with Revolution Studios. It was in 2002, and it was there that I learned the legend of how xXx was born. The writer, Rich Wilkes, sold it in the room, which is something you could do at that time. The executive at Revolution was quick with a decision when you pitched him an idea. He would stop you if he wasn't interested, so as not to waste your time. Or he would hear the whole thing out, expressionless, and then add something he'd like to see in the movie, which meant you sold it. That's how Revolution did things. Rich Wilkes came into Revolution and destroyed with his pitch. It helped that...

Academy Award nominated filmmaker David Fincher is renowned for many things – tense drama, intriguing plot twists, and even the odd Grammy-winning music video – but comedy has, so far, not been one of his signature moves. This is about to change, however, as HBO have handed a series order to Fincher, for his 1980s-set music video comedy series – currently known as Video Synchronicity.

After sitting on the bookshelf for for a long while, the bestselling collaborative autobiography written by one of the most badass rock bands of all time, Motley Crue, is finally going to be made into a movie. With a screenplay already at disposal, Focus Features just picked up the scandalous biopic in hopes of getting it up and running. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Focus Features picked up the biopic along with Jeff Tremaine to direct. If the script has any inkling of their their styles demonstrated in xXx and Californication you know it is going to be a gritty ride. David Fincher is having a love affair with HBO. Besides developing a crime noir show with James Ellroy and directing the entire first season of an adaptation of the British drama Utopia for the network, The Wrap has learned Fincher will also helm the pilot episode for Living On Video, a half-hour series about music videos from the 1980s. Fincher will also executive produce Living On Video (working title), and it's based on his experiences as a music video director, with Rich Wilkes...

Deadline reports that David Fincher is hammering out the details of a comedy about the music industry for HBO. Rich Wilkes and Bob Stevenson have written the script, currently titled Living On Video, and Fincher is expected to direct. Although the project has not been given a green light yet, it would follow college dropout Bobby, who moves to Hollywood in 1983 with dreams of becoming a big-time director (but first, music videos). Through Bobby's eyes, we'll get an Entourage-esque look at the music industry's major players — and their retro decadence — as he tries to forge his way. One can only hope for a solid '80s version of Turtle.

Now this is a curious combination as THR reports Baz Luhrmann of all people is in talks to direct Kung Fu for Legendary Pictures. The project is a big-screen adaptation of the 1970s martial arts Western television show that starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk who came to the American West in search of his half brother. The show featured flashbacks to Caine's training as a teen in which his master called him "young grasshopper." THR reports a source saying the current script, written by John McLaughlin (Black Swan), switches the action to China and finds Caine in search of his father -- at one point ending up in a prison where he must fight to survive. Cory Goodman (Priest) and Rich Wilkes (xXx) have written previous drafts of the screenplay and Bill Paxton was, at one time, attached to direct back in 2011. Luhrmann will do...

This is kind of weird, you guys, but Baz Luhrmann is in talks to direct a big screen adaptation of the ’70s martial arts western TV show Kung Fu for Legendary Pictures. Apparently the production company is eager to amp up their Chinese street cred, so they’re looking to move forward with this and are also in talks with with Zhang Yimou to revive The Great Wall. If they can make a deal, Luhrmann will do a rewrite of the script by Rich Wilkes (XXX).
Kung Fu was about “the adventures of a Shaolin Monk as he wanders the American West armed only with his skill in Kung Fu.” It starred David Carradine and popularized the nickname “young grasshopper,” which is what his mentor called him. This adaptation moves the action to 19th Century China, which makes it less of a Western, I suppose. In this new iteration the main character,...

Wait - does that sound right? Baz Luhrmann and Kung Fu? Well, this is certainly something interesting to talk about. THR is reporting that Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann is now in talks to direct a big screen reboot, or a re-adaptation, of the 1970s martial arts western TV show Kung Fu, which starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine. Luhrmann most recently brought an extravagant, music-filled adaptation of The Great Gatsby to the big screen last summer, and it sounds like this may be next for him at Legendary Pictures if things come together. It isn't finalized yet, but could be a fun chance for Luhrmann to branch out. The project, with no other title other than Kung Fu so far, comes with a script by Rich Wilkes (of Airheads, xXx Trilogy, Punk Like Me, Iron Fist). In development at Legendary Pictures, the "big-screen adaptation" is one of the many projects they've launched that involves,...

So, a few years ago, Bill Paxton (of all people) was attached to direct a big screen version of the '70s series "Kung Fu." And then, not much happened. But last week, word emerged, that the property was moving again at Universal, and we gotta be honest, we really didn't see this coming. Spectacle and glitter specialist, Baz Luhrmann, is now in talks to direct "Kung Fu." We'll say this, Luhrmann has generally tended to swing from one genre to another (cabaret to outback drama to literary jazz age orgy) all filtered through his usual style of visual and audio overload, putting his own distinct stamp on whatever material he's working with. But it is curious to see him take on a show about an orphan, trained as a martial arts master, who travels around righting wrongs and delivering swift justice. But, if the talks all work out, Luhrmann...

When Legendary Pictures had a deal with Warner Bros, the two companies were working on numerous projects, including a big screen adaptation of the classic 1972 "Kung Fu" TV series. Since then, Warner Bros ended its deal with Legendary, which then moved into a partnership with Universal Pictures. Part of that new deal is to get "Kung Fu" off the ground. According to Tracking Board, Cory Goodman (Priest) and Rich Wilkes have been hired to write the script. The plan is to bring the story into modern times and to hire a director before the script is finished. Back in the day, Allen and Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli), Max Makowski (One Last Dance) and Bill Paxton (Frailty) were all once attached to direct. No word if they will be re-approached.

Larry Charles ("Borat," "The Dictator") has signed on to direct and Josh Gad is set to star in the long-in-the-works biopic about late comedian Sam Kinison.
The film will deal with Kinison in the 1980s as he transitioned from his family business of Pentecostal preaching to become a famed and manic stand up comedian in Hollywood. He had many appearances on Howard Stern’s radio show, along with a memorable cameo in classic comedy "Back To School".
He soon fell into drink and drugs for several years, but was soon able to clean up his act and conquer his demons. Sadly, just as he begun his new life of sobriety, the 38-year-old was killed in a head-on collision with a drunken driver.
Key characters in the film will include the likes of Howard Stern, Richard Pryor, and Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. Rich Wilkes ("xXx") penned the script while David Permut will produce.

Seeing as Sam Kinison was one of the most influential and legendary standup comedians of all time, and also a man who engaged in a crazy, tumultuous lifestyle outside of his professional accomplishments, it seems like he would make a great subject for one of those melodramatic Hollywood biopics where some hopeful actor sports a ridiculous hairdo and apes said subject’s iconic affectations in order to make a play at golden statues and the accolades of their peers. At least that seems to be the hopes of director Larry Charles (Borat) and actor Josh Gad (1600 Penn), as Deadline is reporting they’re about to team up to bring a Kinison biopic to the big screen. The film, called simply Kinison, is based on the book “Brother Sam,” which was written by Bill Kinison and has been adapted for the screen by Airheads (most famously xXx, but let’s give the guy some credit) writer Rich Wilkes. So how long has "Kinison" been kicking around? We first reported on it way back in 2008 when it was set up over at HBO with "American Splendor" team Shari Springer Bergman and Robert Pulcini tapped to adapt the book "Brother Sam" by the comedian's sibling Bill Kinison, with Tom Shadyac ("Bruce Almighty," "Liar Liar") set to the direct with Dan Fogler in the lead role. All was silent until a couple of years later, when it was revealed Shadyac was still attached, and he currently is— although only as a producer. A new writer, director and star are now moving the project along. Deadline reports that Larry Charles ("Borat," "Bruno," "The Dictator") is now at the helm with Josh Gad ("Jobs," "Love & Other Drugs," "The Internship") now set for the lead role, and a script provided by Rich Wilkes ("xXx," "Airheads"). Hollywood has been trying to make a movie about stand-up comedian/ormer Pentecostal preacher/professional screamer Sam Kinison for years now, and today the project has taken two incredibly important steps forward. Deadline has learned that Larry Charles, the filmmaker behind movies such as Borat, Religulous and The Dictator, has been hired to direct the feature, while Josh Gad, the Tony-nominated star of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Broadway hit Book of Mormon, has been cast in the lead role. Based on the book Brother Sam by Bill Kinison (Sam's brother) and adapted by Rich Wilkes (xXx), the film will be titled Kinison and will begin in the early 80s as the comedian broke away from "the family business of Pentecostal preaching" and moved to Hollywood where he could start his career in stand up. Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow is starting to experience a bit of a rise in fame thanks to his latest directorial gig. Previously, he had only helmed two films: Cry_Wolf and Never Back Down. Now, with Kick-Ass 2 under his belt, the director has been able to snag two high profile gigs. One is X-Force for Fox, which was announced last week. The second film was revealed today as Deadline reports that Wadlow will direct an action flick titled Go Fast for Sony Pictures.
Scripted by xXx screenwriter Rich Wilkes, the film will focus on “the ocean-bound struggle between DEA agents and drug smugglers and aims to do for high-velocity watercraft what the Fast and Furious franchise has done for fast cars.”
It sounds like an interesting idea and with the right people involved, I think the film could see the same success that the Fast and Furious franchise has seen in recent years.
