“Top Gun: Maverick” won the live-action feature film award at the Cinema Audio Society’s Cas Awards, which took place in Los Angeles on Saturday evening.
It won in a category whose nominees were identical to the lineup in the Oscars’ Best Sound category: “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” During the time when the Oscars gave out separate sound awards for mixing and editing, the Cas winner went on to take the Oscar for sound mixing a little less than half the time – but in the first two years after the Academy combined its two categories into one, the guild and Oscar winners have matched both times.
Other feature-film winners included “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” for animation and “Moonage Daydream” for documentary.
Television winners included “Better Call Saul,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Only Murders in the Building.

Documentary filmmaking the process of being a subject of a documentary have long amounted to a type of performative therapy, the camera acting as a sort of hybrid therapist/priest/judge.
An interesting spin on that theme, in recent years, has been the rise of performative therapy as documentary. Robert Greene (Procession, Bisbee ’17 and Kate Plays Christine) and Joshua Oppenheimer (The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence) are among the leading figures in this subgenre, in which filmmakers observe or sometimes orchestrate artistic exercises as a way of helping people confront psychological wounds and maybe reach catharsis, rather than simply making a film about the psychological wounds themselves.
Pushing the form to docuseries length is HBO’s Mind Over Murder from director Nanfu Wang (One Child Nation). A feature documentary absolutely could be made exclusively about the six people convicted and...

Exclusive: Wme and 3 Arts has signed writer/director Joe White off his short film The Brain Hack. The film tells the story of two students who create a shortcut to induce hallucinogenic visions of God, and as a result find themselves hunted by a deadly religious sect. I’ve got a fantastically clever short film for you to check out today called The Brain Hack. It’s a sci-fi horror film that centers on a computer science student who recruits a film student to document an experiment he's conducting. The science student is attempting to trigger hallucinogenic visions of God, and in the process gets the attention of a mysterious and deadly religious sect. Then there’s the ending, which has a super meta twist.
This is an incredibly cool and well-made short, directed by Joe White. I think you’re going to enjoy this.

Avengers Initiative: Kansas edition a.k.a. The Wannabe Hunters
We open with a pair of adolescents making out in a car, on a deserted road in Conway Springs, Kansas. Turns out, the girl is Krissy Chambers, the obnoxious teen who “helped” Dean take down a couple of Vetalas, a while back.
A few minutes later, a blue van pulls up near the car, and we get the stereotypical “who’s there?” moment when a random shadow passes by the car a few times. At first the boyfriend, Aiden, tries to start the car, but as I said, “typical moment”... and the car won’t start. The boyfriend waits a couple of heartbeats, then makes a run for it, leaving her pleading ass behind.
The shadow, a young man, breaks the passenger side window and grabs her, yanking her out of the opening... And just as I’m about to...

The familiar Lost alumnus, Terry O’Quinn is headed back to Hawaii. Isn’t he the lucky one? Yes, he’ll have to do some work while he’s there. It isn’t a vacation. He is all set to reprise his Hawaii Five-o role.
Fans of the tropical cop series reboot know O’Quinn as retired Navy Seal Joe White. He last appeared in the Season 2 finale, when he introduced McGarrett to the mysterious “Shelburne,” who turns out to be McGarrett’s one and only mother, acted by Christine Lahti. White is also McGarrett’s mentor and former Navy Seal instructor.
He will return to the set sometime this season, as was evident on Twitter. The CBS Tweet read: #H50 fans! Just confirmed, #TerryOQuinn will return as the mysterious Joe White later this season and McG has a Lot of questions 4 him!

With the summer season about to heat up, TV Fanatic is taking some time to look back on the fall, winter and spring.
We've already handed out a B+ to Hart of Dixie, an A- to Person of Interest and a B to Body of Proof. Now, staff writers Jim Garner is here to grade Hawaii Five-0 in our latest TV Fanatic Report Card...

Named Guest Star Screen Time (B-): Starting early in the season we had actors such as Robert Englund and Patty Duke, who were advertised as being on the show and barely got any screen time. This trend continued for the majority of the first half of the season.
However, starting with James Cann in February, this turned this around. In subsequent episodes both Cann and Ed Asner were prominently used, capped by the visit of LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell, from NCIS: Los Angeles.

After dragging us around for the better part of a season, Hawaii Five-0 (TV) finally delivers on some long needed answers with Steve McGarrett’s (Alex O’loughlin) past. And it also delivers on some high octane action and suspense, in addition to racking up a pretty damn big body count. A few of those bodies are people the fans might care about too. The details are a little sketchy, and I must be the only one who doesn’t remember who ‘Toothpick’ is, but he’s stalking Team Five-0. And predictably, everything starts out hunky-dory, until it all blows up in their faces. Danny (Scott Caan) is having issues with Rachel yet again, this time, she might be moving to Las Vegas with Stan and taking Grace with her. Chin (Daniel Dae Kim) is happy with his wife, Malia (Reiko Aylesworth) and Kono (Grace Park) is mending things with her boy-toy Adam.

I have to hand it to Peter Lenkov, he certainly knows how to shake things up and give us a dramatic ending to Hawaii Five-0’s sophomore season while still leaving a few hooks for us to come back to in the fall... without ending entire story on a cliff hanger.
Before we get into the exciting things, I have to mention something that really bugged me and detracted from the overall story: how Max got shot. In what reality would the cops have not completely roped off both ends of the alley before the coroner was called in? And assuming that it was a breach in protocol that caused it, why would Hilary (the shooter) still be in the alley if she was mobile enough to outrun Steve and the rest of Five-0?
Okay, that convenient story-plot aside, a lot of big things...

• Chin Ho is shirtless getting broken ribs examined: And, it took him extra time to get that shirt back on because of those broken ribs. Nice! He got injured in a blast at the Honolulu Police Department after Hilary Chaver (Taylor Cole), a woman who’d supposedly been killed five years earlier in a police chase, shot and killed Chief Fryer and wounded Max (Masi Oka), who’d followed the trail of blood...

The closer we get to the end of the season, the more octane is pumped in to the plots. This episode was no different than any of the others centered around the nefarious Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos), emotionally driven, high action fun. But there was a lot of heart in this as well, and we have to thank Ian Anthony Dale and Grace Park for that. They’re sudden relationship snuck up and smacked us with a lot of feeling, and really, I can’t take Ian Anthony Dale crying. Ever again. Basically, we finally catch back up with Team Five-0’s fearless leader, Steve (Alex O’loughlin) in Tokyo. Remember, he took off to find Shelbourne and Joe White (Terry O’Quinn) a while back, and it seems he actually caught Wo Fat! Well, catching him and keeping him are two different things, as Steve will soon find out.

Sometimes, you just have to let your supporting characters shine. And there is no better example than giving a highly character-driven storyline to a secondary, yet beloved character like Max Bergman (Masi Oka). Back story, angst, and a little bit of suspense all rolled into a nicely done episode that stood on its own despite the lack of it's leading man, Alex O'loughlin. The facts are these: In an opening teaser that could have been snatched from any one of the multitude of Scream movies, a young girl is plucked from her broken-down car on the side of road in North Shore. She's found dead in a pineapple field later, and there are tell-tale signs on the body that disturbs Max greatly. Meanwhile, Steve has left Danny (Scott Caan) a "Dear Danno" letter explaining that he's got to don his Lone Ranger hat once again to seek his father's killer,...

Mai Ka Wa Kahiko: Out of the Past
This week in Hawaii Five-0, we got to see Danny Williams - police officer and protective father take center stage - as a dirty cop he help send to jail turned up on the island in "Mai Ka Wa Kahiko".
I enjoyed the break from Shelburne, Joe White and Wo Fat. It was especially nice to get a glimpse into Danny’s past. Unless you count him being a complete moron at Halloween, which I choose to forget, this was our first real Danny episode of the season.
Opening the case with him knowing the Us Marshall that was killed gave some great foreshadowing of where things were going. Once things got down to "Officer McGuire" (Rick Peterson) picking up Grace I knew Danny was in trouble. Then again, I don’t think I have ever seen Peter Greene (Peterson) in a...

There are good things and bad things about finally answering a story arc. The good thing – after being lead around by the nose or left to glean information from scraps and crumbs all season, it's nice to get some answers. The bad thing – sometimes the answer is a dud. Or at the very least, means we're just going to have to wait for even more trails to follow. But despite a few duds, this episode of Hawaii Five-0 (TV) ended up being pretty great overall. A flashback to Steve's youth, where we see a teenaged McGarrett and his father, John (William Sadler) in the midst of some gnarly father-son angst. Dad is sending Steve and his sister to the mainland, per "Uncle Joe's" idea to get Steve into the military academy. What we gain out of this is that John "won't back down from a fight", so we can assume...

Hawaii Five-0 returns on Monday with its first episode of the new year.
Titled "Ka Ho'oponopono" ("The Fix"), fans can look forward to the murder of a teenage girl and an important question for the team to ponder: why was she targeted in the first place? And what role might Joe White play in the tragedy?
The latter topic is specifically addressed in the following CBS promo for the installment. Watch now and look forward to a winter trip to Hawaii:

Sometimes, it's better if the b-plot, in this case, Chin's (Daniel Dae Kim) wedding to Malia (Reiko Aylesworth) is more front and center. It was a lovely ceremony. The case, however, was hardly compelling but there were some nice moments. A pack of kids reviving the glory days of the Goonies as they go to explore an old WWII bunker outside Pearl City. Once the kids repel into an old lava tube, of course they discover a dead body. What I loved is these kids reacted *exactly* like the cast from the Goonies as though production gave them all copies of the DVD before shooting. Danny's (Scott Caan) living arrangements have changed, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bummed he's not still rooming with Steve (Alex O'loughlin). Steve and Joe (Terry O'Quinn) are discussing these living arrangements as they go to pick Danny up at...

Was this entire Hawaii Five-0 episode pieced together from spare parts of better episodes? There were so many disjointed pieces that I nearly got lost along the way. Given the non-sequitur nature of the hour, I’m just going to break down the main points.
Lori and Danny Handcuffed: Does anyone have any idea what point there was to this storyline? Furthermore, why did Steve feel the need to drop they key off the balcony? It all felt totally out of place.
We have not seen any indication that Lori and Danny would be romantically linked. What the heck is the “Jersey Slip” and why do you need to be handcuffed to another person for it to work? Finally, what type of horrible police officer is Danny that his handcuff key is not on a key ring of any sort... and he only has one in his possession?...

There are good things and bad things about being the follow-up episode to a stellar showing two weeks prior. The bad thing is living up to expectations when everyone is coming down off the high from 2x10. The good thing is that sometimes, if you're lucky, you get to see blow-back consequences to things that happened in the aforementioned fantastic episode. Okay, so, I fall into the category of "the high has worn off' but this was still a good episode. Governor Denning (Richard T. Jones) is back, apparently from his extended hiatus on a golf course somewhere, and he's trotting out his shiny Five-0 task force for a dog and pony show about them capturing millions of dollars in cocaine at the docks. Of course, our team is muttering in the background about why they don't want to be there, but hey, at least Danny (Scott Caan) dug out a tie for the occasion.

Pahele: Trap.
Apparently Steve and his team were busy while we were all eating turkey, as this episode opened with Five-0 receiving public recognition for an $80 million cocaine bust. Now I feel even guiltier about the feasting I did at Thanksgiving. Thanks, Steve!
Aside from the return of Steve saying "book'em, Danno" right at the end, the kidnapping storyline was nothing too surprising or out of the norm. Maybe I'm jaded, but it feels like we just had an episode about college students being kidnapped. I guess that's what happens when you re-watch the last six installment in August as a primer before the new season starts.
The similarities to the earlier episode aside, I have to admit that Rick Gomez portrayed Vargas/Castillo extremely well. He nailed both the meek and scared Vargas and the confident and arrogant Castillo personalities pretty well. But this did leave me me with...

I admit, there was a lot of happy cheering going on at my house while watching what is arguably one of the best episodes of this season to date. You can't go wrong with great action, suspense, a healthy dose of bodily harm, betrayal, redemption and Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos). And like all of my favorite episodes, this case was all character driven which kept the viewer investment at all times highs. We do love our team, y'know. Rule number one: never hide under your bed when someone is breaking into your house. It's the first place they look. The reporter girl – aka our victim of the week – obviously didn't get this memo. I hear wedding bells! Actually, it wasn't a huge surprise to watch Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) ask his ex-fiancé Malia (Reiko Aylesworth) to marry him again. But it was damn romantic. I just have a knee...

"Ki'ilua:" Deceiver.
From Chin Ho proposing to the guys from Seal Team 9 tagging along to help rescue Steve, this episode of Hawaii Five-0 turned out to be quite a rollercoaster ride, and I mean that in the best way possible.
Okay, Chin Ho fans, who’s happy that he's marrying the woman who broke up with him when he was suspected of stealing from the police department? It's something we can all consider: how much are you willing to forgive the person you love most?
It’s easy for us as spectators to pass judgment on fictional characters, but I want you to think for a moment: what if the situation was real? Could you forgive the person you truly love for believing the worst about you? It’s a tough call. Thankfully, most of us will never need to make.
Now we move on the sad part. I hope...

It's a crossover-paloosa! Stars from 24 (TV) and NCIS: Los Angeles (TV) pretty up the screen and yes, I was impressed. But then I adore Annie Wersching in all things. Not to mention NCIS:La alum, Kensi (Daniela Ruah) brings us more information from the mysterious video of John McGarrett and Wo Fat but she leaves more questions than answers. Oh yeah, and Alex O'loughlin gets oiled up for an Mma fight. Yeah, I don't know what to do with that other than just sit back and drool. We start out with a dead guy going into a pool while taped to a chair. Then we get yet another failed attempt by Lori (Lauren German) to make interpersonal connections with the team, which is hard for someone with no emotional affect, while she helps Steve (Alex O'loughlin) wrap his hands for a charity Mma fight. Hawaii Five-0 Puts Up a Good Fight
In “Ka Hakaka”, Hawaii Five-0 investigates the murder of restaurateur Jake Griffin in an apparent home invasion. Meanwhile, Joe White (Terry O’Quinn) calls in NCIS agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) to examine the recovered video of John McGarrett and Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos).
The motive and person behind Jake’s murder were well hidden. Five-0 traced the home invasion team to a valet service used by Jake’s restaurants. The invaders would duct-tape a husband/father to a chair and threaten his wife and children until he revealed where the family kept their valuables; however, their methods had not previously included murder.
According to Jake’s will, his son would inherit his fortune, but not for another six years. Until then, Jake’s sister had control. Jake’s sister was also a good suspect in that she had been in charge of...

Ka Hakaka Maika’i: The Good Fight.
Now that all the members of Five-0 are back together, we got to see them get their fighting on on "Ka Hakaka Maika'i," as they were faced with a murder during a home invasion.
It was back to business as usual for the team, from Steve going toe-to-toe with Mma champion Chuck Liddell to watching the now five-person unit take down those robbers - and business was good!
Watching our heroes go at it with these antagonists was one of the best actions scenes we've been treated to this season. It was nearly perfect, but one had get away, of course. Enter the requisite chase scene!
This happens so often, my wife has started keeping keeping track. Tonight the count was two: first the last home invader, then Boriero.
Elsewhere, we got a visit from Wo Fat, or rather Joe White got a visit.

Some really nice character development moments in this episode, which, for the majority of this season so far, have been lacking. It's nice to see a return to Steve and Danny actually working together, which they didn't much last episode, and c'mon, the two of them are why most of us keep tuning in week after week. But we also get to see some lovely deep dive shots, some interesting guest casting and some really hilarious moments which round out to a pretty good episode. Kamekona (Taylor Wily) has expanded his empire to a shrimp truck, which boasts 31 flavors of shrimp that would make Bubba Gump proud. The advertising with his head on a shrimp body is just disturbing, though. Steve (Alex O'loughlin) and Joe (Terry O'Quinn) are sampling Kamekona's jambalaya (Cajun in paradise?) and Steve is apparently a spice virgin because he nearly gets his tongue burned off. But...

I'm not sure what it is, exactly, that Hawaii Five-0 is doing this season. Alienating Kono further and further from the team while letting Lori White get chummier and chummier with them? Do not like.
More and more and more Joe White? Do not like.
I understand the need to have some series-long narrative arcs to go along with the mystery-a-week shenanigans, but I don't love the way it's relegating Grace Park to pretty much cameo status every week. However, this week's murder was a doozy (everyone loves a pirate story!), and, as always, we've got our bromance!
1) Me & My Jealousy — When Danny and Steve discover a stash of pirate gold in their victim's apartment, they take the loot to the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, where Danny finds himself immediately smitten with the curator. Steve's body language is all grumpy and closed off. Add that to his exasperated facial expression...
