We got a taster of Audible’s new drama, Alien: River Of Pain. Here’s the new trailer and what we thought...
On a grey afternoon in Greenwich, I trundled through a park and struggled up an incline to reach London’s Royal Observatory. I was lured into this physical exertion by the promise of canapés, drinks and sneak peek at Alien: River Of Pain, a new Audible drama that will bridge the gap between Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens.
After taking a second to catch my breath and immortalise the iconic London skyline with a half-arsed smartphone photo, I said my awkward hellos, stashed my belongings in a cloakroom and made my way into the event. As promised, bubbly was flowing and tiny nibbles were being circulated.
Staff carried snacks atop rectangular glass cases, which contained little black rocks. Space-y looking rocks.

Strange & Norrell closes with a terrific finale. Are we likely to see anything as imaginative and accomplished as it again soon? Unlikely…

1.7 Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
By the Raven King’s silky tresses, that was a class act.
Start to finish, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell did an improbable number of things right. The story and dialogue darted along, the direction never failed to impress or the special effects to convince, and the cast… well, that cast. Can we put the whole team under an enchantment binding them together forever? Until they reunite to expertly spin us another tale, Sunday nights on BBC One should be left empty as a mark of respect, like the favourite restaurant table of a beloved departed guest.
Last week’s belter of a penultimate episode had left things on an ominous note. We’d been led to expect a magical duel in the finale,...

1.5 Arabella
Forget Barb meters drily totting up television ratings, the true measure of a TV episode should be judged by the volume of a viewer’s involuntary wail when the end credits appear. By that system, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell registers off the scale. When the screen turned black at the close of tonight’s instalment, my neighbour knocked on the party wall to check I hadn’t done myself an injury.
As an adult, watching this series is the closest I’ve come to the childhood experience of being read a new and spell-binding bedtime book. In the joy of the anticipation, in the telling, and in the frustration of realising a chapter’s end has snuck up on you mid-tale; that’s just how it feels.

I just watched last night’s debut episode of the BBC’s Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell — based on Susanna Clarke’s fabulous and sprawling historical fantasy novel [Amazon U.S.] [Amazon Canada] [Amazon U.K.] [iTunes U.S.] [iTunes Canada] [iTunes U.K.] — and I love it. I love the book: imagine if Jane Austen wrote Harry Potter, but instead of kids as its central characters it features fusty old academics, ambitious politicians, social climbers, and other unpleasant fellows. (Yes, most of the major players are men, alas.) This adaptation is visually fascinating: it’s not a pretty costume drama but something dirtier, nastier, and somehow itchy. No one’s clothes seem to fit well. Men’s wigs are forever askew. “Fashionable” parties are claustrophobic and loud. The streets of 1806 London are mucky. It’s all very grubby… which is brilliant. This is a story about people who don’t really fit in, and the two titular characters — the last magicians left in England to...

It's a bit hard to summarize to Sussanna Clarke's dense, funny and magical epic "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell," It's about the battle between two magicians, but it's also a romance that dabbles in alternate history and in which both Napoleon and fairies can co-exist, all told in "old tyme" language. Thus, the prospect of a movie adaptation of the nearly 800-page book (teeming with footnotes) seemed foolhardy. But since we're in the golden age of television, a seven-part miniseries seems like the right approach, and the first trailer for BBC's big undertaking is here. Eddie Marsan and Bertie Carvel take on the lead roles of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell respectively, with Alice Englert, Marc Warren, Samuel West, and Charlotte Riley in supporting roles in what looks like a very spirited adaptation of the novel. I'm definitely looking forward to see if can capture the um, magic, of Clarke's excellent book.

The pounding on the door (that ended season three) continues, but Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) is ready for the threatening person behind that door. Even more new faces to join CBS and Julianna Margulies’ critical and pop fave The Good Wife, and they aren’t unfamiliar names and faces either. Yesterday we told you about two new additions to The Good Wife season 4 cast in Maura Tierney and Marc Warren, and today CBS brings word that Kristin Chenoweth and Nathan Lane have been added to The Good Wife mix.
Kristin Chenoweth, late of Fox’s Glee, was my girl in Pushing Daisies , one of my all time favorite modern tv shows. In The Good Wife she fits in as an ace reporter who will be at odds with Margulies and Noth, both about the election and their marriage.
Nathan Lane is marked to be a cost cutting manager (the dreaded “adviser” who comes in during nonprofitable times – see Office Space… or life.) which basically, by default, has him on one side of a line by himself,...

It’s been a busy few days in The Good Wife casting office, and the latest actor to score a role on the show’s upcoming fourth season is Nathan Lane. He will appear on a recurring basis and make his debut in September’s season premiere.
Lane will play “a bottom line-obsessed manager imposed on Lockhart & Gardner by the bank to cut costs” and will help get the firm back in financial shape. His arrival will ruffle feathers at the firm – mostly those of Will and Diane.
Lane’s casting is the fourth such announcement his week to come out of the show.

One of the most interesting events at this weekend's Sundance London festival at the O2 isn't quite a film at all: it's a table read of a new script called Farming by well-established British actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. And he's assembled a stellar cast for the read, including Ashley Walters, Marc Warren, Minnie Driver and David Harewood.Farming is an autobiographical tale about a young man called Enitan (who Walters will be reading), growing up in 1960s and 1970s Britain. His Nigerian immigrant parents engage in a then-common practice called "farming", fostering their son to a white couple while they work, study and save. But amid a cultural backlash to immigration, Enitan finds himself struggling to create his own identity and falls in with a gang of skinheads. The read-through will also feature Nikki Amuka, Michael Socha, Bronson Webb, Joshua Herdman, Ony Uhiara, Femi Oyeniran and Jonathon Hyde.Akinnuoye-Agbaje already attended...

Check out the first look image of Marc Warren in the stage adaptation of ‘Cool Hand Luke’. Warren will star in a new adaptation in the West End based on Donn Pearce’s novel and we think Mr Warren looks pretty cool as ‘old blue eyes‘.
If you’re not aware of the 1967 movie, it’s the story of a WWII veteran turned convict & rebel, set in a prison camp. So expect hard physical labour, lots of shouting by prison guards and the piece’s protagonist to be one of those play-by-my-own-rules kinda blokes we all like to pretend we are like. We’re particularly interested to see if Warren has to eat 50 eggs a night like in that famous scene from the film and if that comes armed with a rather unpleasant aroma as a side effect.
The production opens at the Aldwych Theatre on Monday 3rd October, with previews from the 23rd September.

There's far too much exposition, a very daft plot, some risible dialogue and yet Sky's ripe four-parter is horribly compelling. John Simm, Philip Glenister, Max Beesley and Marc Warren's fortysomethings visit their old pal, Alvo (a swivel-eyed Ben Chaplin), at his lavish villa in Majorca. After treating them to lobster, his vast pool and the local nightlife he sets about verbally abusing them before, that is, a tiny Majorcan in a Tony Blair mask shoots him in the head, sending their jolly into a Lord of the Flies-like hell. It's extremely silly, but Simm and Glenister are always compelling and they make this gamey tale of gangsters, police corruption and "friendship" work.

It looks like the dragon Smaug has struck early. A studio for The Hobbit has been gutted by fire, just as production on the two-part film adaptation is expected to get the green light.
Firefighters spent three hours putting out the blaze at a warehouse in Wellington, New Zealand, which housed Jackson's Portsmouth Miniatures Studio.
The $3.2million studio would have been used for shooting special effects sequences on The Hobbit, it's been confirmed. At this stage, it's not clear what impact - if any - the fire will have on production.
The scene is now being inspected by fire experts and insurers to assess the extent of the damage. There was a man in the building at the time but he escaped unharmed, reports Tvnz.
Meanwhile, the much-troubled project is close to being greenlit by Warner Bros and MGM, who are sharing the costs. The Los Angeles Times reports that...
