Tomorrow Top Cow Productions Inc. will release their new series Magdalena. It is written by Tini Howard and Ryan Cady. The artwork is done by Chrisian Dibari and Mike Spicer. The Magdalena is a woman that protects the world from demons and beasts. According to legend those who are chosen are part of a divine blood line from Jesus and "the lost apostle" Mary Magdalene. They are also armed with a relic called the Spear of Destiny which according to the story had pierced Christ's side at the crucifixion. The character first made her appearance in the 90's in the Darkness series and since then has had it's own series once in 2010 of 12 issues.
Now the character is back with a story featuring the current Magdalena wounded and trying to find her replacement. Here is the official synopsis and press release sent to us from Top Cow Productions Inc.:...

‘La La Land’ (Courtesy: Lionsgate)
By: Carson Blackwelder

If you’ve been paying attention to the 2017 Oscars race, you’ve likely heard of a little movie titled La La Land. The Damien Chazelle-directed romantic musical features numerous tunes throughout but Lionsgate is pushing hard for just two — “City of Stars” and “Audition” — in the best original song category. One question remains: does having multiple pieces nominated help or hurt a film? Let’s take a look back at what history seems to indicate.
La La Land — while likely a frontrunner for many categories at the upcoming Academy Awards, even the coveted best picture — we’re going to be focusing on the musical side. Both of the film’s stars, Ryan Gosling (jazz musician Sebastian) and Emma Stone (aspiring actress Mia), lent their vocal chops to these two numbers with him owning most of “City of Stars” and her dominating in “Audition.

Firefly, Season 1, Episode 1, “Serenity”
Written and directed by Joss Whedon
Aired December 20th, 2002 on Fox
Welcome to Sound on Sight’s summer look back at Firefly, the beloved yet short-lived series that aired on Fox during the 2002-2003 TV season. Every Thursday, we will revisit an episode at a time of the show’s one and only season, in the order that they were meant to be seen. The correct sequence is accurately reflected on most, if not all, streaming services that currently have the show, but for those watching via other methods, the accurate order can be found here. Now, without further ado, time to spend some time with the most entertaining group of grifters in The ‘Verse.
Of all the things “Serenity” does well (from which there are many to choose), its successful building of an entire world in less than two hours, complete with fleshed out characters and relationships,...

Into the Abyss; The Lady; Patience (After Sebald); The Story of Film: An Odyssey
At a key moment in Into the Abyss (2011, Revolver, 12), a quietly metaphysical inquiry into the awful realities of senseless murder and state-sanctioned execution, an off-camera Werner Herzog asks an apparently self-possessed prison chaplain to "tell me about an encounter with a squirrel".
The question, delivered with Herzog's trademark deadpan Bavarian drawl, seems to come from nowhere and to bear little relation to the ongoing discussion about the last hours of condemned inmates facing death by lethal injection. Yet as always with Herzog, there is an insightful intuition at work behind the apparent absurdity of his approach and a moment later the formerly guarded reverend (whose duties on death row await him even as he speaks) is in tears, talking of the sanctity and preciousness of life, however great or small, and apparently confronting the "ecstatic truth...

Press Release:
Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse bring their epic Dark Horse Presents tale of an alien hero named Harry to a fully fledged series beginning with Resident Alien #0!
“I blame Steve Parkhouse. Having collaborated with him long ago on a couple of stories for The Dreaming, I was keen to do so again—and anyone who’s ever seen Steve’s work (on The Bojeffries Saga or The Milkman Murders, to name but two) already knows the reason why: he’s stunningly good,” stated Hogan. “We introduced our friendly alien to the world in the pages of Dark Horse Presents last year, and those installments have now been collected into Resident Alien #0. Over the next few months, you’ll learn a bit more about Harry and his supporting cast and watch as he attempts to catch a murderer—and that’s just for starters. This alien is here to stay.

At the top of its roundup of all things Farocki, Alt Screen notes that MoMA will be hosting An Evening with Harun Farocki tonight in conjunction with the exhibition Harun Farocki: Images of War (at a Distance), on view through January 2. Farocki will then be at Anthology Film Archives tomorrow night for the launch of their retrospective, running through October 10.
Ben Rivers will be at the Harvard Film Archive this evening for a double bill: Slow Action (2010) and Sack Barrow (2011). His latest, Two Years at Sea, premiered in Venice, and Neil Young wrote: "This Is My Land (2006) was an intimate portrait of Jake Williams and his hermit-like existence in the middle of Aberdeenshire's forests, and Two Years at Sea, Rivers's first feature-length work, is a 90-minute variation on similar themes, with only one line of audible dialogue ('chesty cough,' mumbles Jake, examining a bottle of expectorant.) Not letting 'Green Lantern' get him down, actor Ryan Reynolds is deep into another film adaptation of a comic, 'R.I.P.D.' He and Kevin Bacon were spotted on the set of the film snazzily dressed (Reynolds more so) getting ready to take off in a Dodge Challenger. The photos are below and come courtesy of Celebuzz. Certainly not in the same league as something like 'Spider-Man,' 'Batman,' or even 'Watchmen,' 'R.I.P.D.' is one of those comic book adaptations that just kind of comes out of nowhere. It looks to be one of those movies that could prove successful on its own merit rather than counting on a heavily established fanbase. From the official website of Dark Horse Comics, here's the synopsis of the graphic novel: "Welcome to the Rest In Peace Department -- the devoted, yet dead, officers of divine law enforcement "patrolling the deadbeat.

Re-released by Chaplin in 1942 in a recut version missing some scenes, and with added narration and musical score, The Gold Rush will be presented in a new restoration of the original, silent 1925 version. 25 special programs and screenings have been added to the lineup for this year's New York Film Festival, running September 30 through October 26. The only secrets left are the 2011 Views from the Avant Garde lineup and a few free forums in the works.
Because this round is so heavy on the documentaries, I want to first revisit the lineup for Toronto's Real to Reel program in another entry and then return here to add further notes and linkage. For now, the Film Society of Lincoln Center's Eugene Hernandez has a few more details, but here's the gist of today's announcement:
Masterworks Screenings
Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush (1925), restored.
Hugo Santiago's Invasión (1969), restored.
Sara Driver's You Are Not I (1981), restored.
Special Presentations: Documentaries
Xan Aranda's Andrew Bird: Fever Year.
Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory.
Nelson Pereira dos Santos's Music According to Tom Jobim.
