Thursday night moviegoers answered M. Night Shyamalan’s “Knock at the Cabin” with 1.45 million at the box office, while comedy “80 for Brady” kicked up 1.27 million in previews.
The Universal horror film will play in 3,643 North American theaters starting Feb. 3. By the end of opening weekend, it’s expected to draw around 20 million. To compare, Shyamalan’s previous film “Old,” which debuted in July 2021, earned 1.5 million in previews and opened to 16.8 million.
Based on Paul Tremblay’s “The Cabin at the End of the World,” the film stars Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge as a couple on vacation with their young daughter (Kristen Cui). Their trip quickly turns nightmarish when four strangers show up to announce that one of them must sacrifice their life in order to prevent the apocalypse.

Tom Brady left Jane Fonda starstruck.
The legendary quarterback produces and stars in upcoming film “80 for Brady,” based on the true story of a group of senior women who take a road trip to the 2017 Super Bowl to meet Brady. Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field, and Rita Moreno star as the core friend group, with Brady’s former teammates Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski, and Danny Amendola appearing.
“My knees actually got weak when he walked into my trailer,” Fonda told The Hollywood Reporter at the world premiere of the film during the Palm Springs International Film Festival. “I’m in awe of that kind of skill. When somebody is the best in the world at what they do, you have to honor that and respect it. I was just awestruck.”
Fonda continued, “He was kind and humble, which is hard to believe considering how brilliant he is at what he does,...

Exclusive: Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn is heading back to the Cannes Film Festival, but not in the way you might expect.
Refn is expected in Cannes with his new Amazon TV series, Too Old To Die Young, I understand.
This is shaping up to be the first Cannes in four years without a Netflix or Amazon movie in the lineup but the latter will at least have a presence with Refn’s anticipated crime-drama, whose strong cast includes Miles Teller, Billy Baldwin, John Hawkes, Celestino Cornielle, Nell Tiger Free, Jena Malone, Babs Olusanmokun, Alexander Gomez and Callie Hernandez.
The show, which debuts on Amazon Prime on June 14, will take a neon-soaked look at the criminal underbelly of La, including working-class hit men, Yakuza soldiers, cartel assassins from Mexico, Russian mafia captains and teenage killers.

Jodie Foster is a wisecracking nurse with gallows humor in the violence-laden first trailer for the near-future action-thriller “Hotel Artemis,” released on Monday.
Foster runs a 22-year-old, secret, members-only hospital for criminals in a 2028-set Los Angeles that’s torn by riots. The cast also includes Sterling K. Brown, Sofia Boutella, Jeff Goldblum, Brian Tyree Henry, Jenny Slate, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Day, and Dave Bautista.
“You might want to burn some scented candles because it smells like somebody died,” Day tells her at one point. “Somebody did,” she responds evenly.
At one point, Foster’s seen dashing down a hallway and muttering, “It’s a rough night at the Artemis.”
But amid the chaos, Hotel Artemis appears to be a bit of a sanctuary. “This place was built on two things — trust and rules,” Foster asserts.
“Hotel Artemis” marks Foster’s first acting project since 2013’s “Elysium.” The plot has been kept under wraps,...

I’d bet that a little creative process seasoning by the likes of two-time partnerships with Nicolas Winding Refn and Derek Cianfrance might have ultimately pushed Ryan Gosling to move in front of the camera with what sounds like an ambitious, genre-bending project. The picky Benoît Debie (Spring Breakers, Enter the Void) lenses.

Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming action-thriller titled Drive is definitely our favourite. No wonder, since the movie already stars Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Ron Perlman, Christina Hendricks, Oscar Isaac and Albert Brooks.
So, jut like we promised, we’re back with some official announcement about the story that follows:
“…a Hollywood stunt driver by day (Ryan Gosling), a loner by nature, who moonlights as a top-notch getaway driver-for-hire in the criminal underworld.
He finds himself a target for some of La’s most dangerous men after agreeing to aid the husband of his beautiful neighbor, Irene (Carey Mulligan). When the job goes dangerously awry, the only way he can keep Irene and her son alive is to do what he does best – Drive!”
Nicolas Winding Refn is directing from a screenplay by Hossein Amini, which was, as we mentioned, adapted from the James Sallis novel.
Producers on the film are Marc Platt,...

Note to sall SCOREcasters: I was supposed to be posting something relevant, but my schedule brought my writing to its knees - therefore I am posting a slice of life in the film business. I hope you enjoy this as I still think about the few weeks I worked with one of my heroes. This was an article in a series from my 'secret' blog which passed away a few years ago.
We were working at Paramount Stage M - which, sadly, closed a couple of years ago. The film was “The Story Of Us”. In the control booth Rob Reiner, Marc Shaiman, Tim Boyle, and crew listened to various takes that had been recorded. There was a lot of film music history recorded on Stage M. “Star Trek”, “Psycho”, “Sunset Boulevard”, “Out of Africa” and hundreds more.

In February 1994, justice was finally served for Myrlie Evers -- a mere three decades after the fatal shooting of her husband, civil-rights activist Medgar Evers, and the two mistrials that left his killer, Byron De La Beckwith, a free man.
Faithfully documenting the events leading up to the white supremacist's ultimate conviction, Rob Reiner's "Ghosts of Mississippi" is a well-intentioned but dramatically unsatisfying motion picture experience.
There is certainly an intriguing story to be told here, but unfortunately it isn't the one Reiner and screenwriter Lewis Colick ("Unlawful Entry") have chosen to tell. By focusing almost entirely on the trials and tribulations of Bobby DeLaughter -- the white assistant district attorney who took on the Evers case -- and the toll it took on DeLaughter's family, while relegating the Myrlie Evers angle to the sidelines, the film resonates a been-there, done-that familiarity, particularly in light of the summer's "A Time to Kill".
The result is a finely acted, technically proficient piece that falls frustratingly short of the Oscar caliber to which it obviously aspires -- James Woods' scenery-nibbling portrayal of De La Beckwith being the sure-fire exception. In boxoffice terms, the "Ghosts" verdict will likely be delivered in favor of a respectful but not overwhelming audience response.
After a prologue set in 1964 during the minutes leading up to Evers' murder as his wife (Whoopi Goldberg) and children watched a televised civil rights speech by President Kennedy, the story fast-forwards to the late 1980s, when DeLaughter (Alec Baldwin) is assigned to the Evers case. After initially little to go on, DeLaughter is able to reconstruct the events of the past.
At the same time, his progressive immersion in the case costs him his marriage to Dixie (Virginia Madsen), whose father was the presiding judge in an earlier De La Beckwith trial, while leaving his family open to terrorist threats. Shaken but remaining undeterred, DeLaughter sees the case through to its courtroom finale, closing an unpleasant chapter of the South's checkered history.
Handed his most heroic lead since originating the Jack Ryan character in "The Hunt for Red October", Baldwin seizes the opportunity, playing DeLaughter with an earnest, sympathetic conviction. Still, his closing courtroom arguments never reach the emotional crescendo required, but the blame could also be shouldered by Colick's script, which opts for accuracy over dramatic license.
Likewise Goldberg, as Myrlie Evers, is solemnly passionate in what amounts to a series of extended cameos instead of what should have been a more evenly represented story. By keeping the spotlight on DeLaughter, we're robbed of getting a glimpse of the motivation that kept Evers' fight alive for more than 30 years.
Only Woods is able to completely transcend the staid material and layers of latex (masterfully applied by make-up artists Matthew Mungle and Deborah La Mia Denaver) as 73-year-old De La Beckwith.
Bill Cobbs also does some standout work as Evers' DJ brother, Charlie; the Evers' sons, Darrell and Van, play themselves in the film, while Yolanda King, daughter of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., plays their sister, Reena.
As has come to be expected in Rob Reiner pictures, production values are pristine, with director of photography John Seale, production designer Lilly Kilvert, costume designer Gloria Gresham and composer Marc Shaiman lending their superb talents.
