The Nathan James will soon complete its final mission.
The Last Ship, which features the destroyer Nathan James and its crew, concludes its five-season run Sunday night.
It's safe to assume the TNT war drama won't go quietly into that good night.
To get an updated briefing on the war against Tavo's Gran Colombian forces, TV Fanatic talked with Adam Baldwin, who plays steadfast Navy officer Mike Slattery.
Slattery has played several roles during the run of The Last Ship. He started as Tom Chandler's executive officer, then became commanding officer of the Nathan James and has since been promoted to admiral. Whatever needs to be done, Slattery is there to pitch in.
Among Baldwin's memorable roles before Slattery were Casey on Chuck and Jayne on the criminally short-lived Firefly.
Baldwin spoke not only about the season finale but also about his dedicated character and the impact of The Last Ship.

The Last Ship wraps its final, world-saving mission this Sunday at 9/8c, as the TNT action-drama ends its five-season run. Already, significant losses have been suffered — Garnett and Burk included — and more are still to come, with the Navy and Marines about to storm a soft spot in Tavo’s Colombian defenses, all while the Nathan James at least attempts to outwit its adversary at sea.
Adam Baldwin, who plays Admiral Mike Slattery, shared with TVLine a spoiler-free peek at the highly emotional nadir ahead, while also reflecting on The Last Ship‘s impressive run — and its place within his career.

Chicago – The season finale of TNT Network’s “The Last Ship” was this previous Sunday (Sep. 11, 2016), and as finales tend to do, there were surprises. One of these shocks was the death of the character Roberta Price, the regional leader of the Deep South. The actress who portrayed her, Lucy Butler, was a surprised as anyone else, and talked to HollywoodChicago.com regarding the transition.
“The Last Ship” is a popular action-drama show on TNT, and has been renewed for Season Four in 2017. The premise is in the title, when a worldwide epidemic has wiped out 80% of the world’s population, a lone naval destroyer floats with 218 souls on board, working on a cure. “The Last Ship” features Eric Dane as Captain Tom Chandler, Rhona Mitra as Dr. Rachel Scott and Adam Baldwin as Captain Mike Slattery. Lucy Butler portrayed tough-as-nails regional director Roberta Price on the ship, a politician with an agenda.

Finding an equally beneficial common ground with your most notorious enemy during a time of crisis can often times appear too good to be true.
Leaders often understandably strive to soothe their conflicts with their foes, in order to prevent a devastating conflict.
However, officials' mutual understanding can ultimately prove to be a false cover, if their rivals instead take a selfish action to secure their own success. During The Last Ship Season 3 Episode 5, U.S. President Jeffrey Michener, Co Cdr Tom Chandler and their fellow officers unsurprisingly discover that harrowing turn in alliances.
Throughout the current season so far, the U.S. Commander-in-Chief reasonably believed that he had the support of the Regional Leadership Committee as he commendably strived to support his citizens' reconstruction of their territories.
Tom, the temporary captain of the Nathan James, also understandably assumed that with his latest alliance with Chinese President Peng, he could safely pass through Asian waters.

Government leaders often face harrowing conflicts while in office, especially during times of international crisis. While they strive to compassionately reason with their country's supposed enemy, in order to maintain international peace, their neighbors at home are often left struggling to even recognize their decision to engage their foes.
As U.S. President Jeffrey Michener, Co Cdr Tom Chandler and their fellow officials continue to try to stop a potential war with Asia in The Last Ship Season 3 Episode 4, the American public remains rightfully perplexed on why their leaders are seemingly helping the opponents who are posing the most damage to them.
The sci-fi series justly took a break during its latest episode from focusing on the brewing emotional clashes between Tom and his fellow government officials. Instead, the story intriguingly emphasizes how the Western leaders are trying to reason with their Asian counterparts, even though their efforts are drawing dire criticism at home.

Beginning to passionately care about the motives of an antagonist who initially appeared to be self-serving and completely opposed to the commanding hero's goals is usually an unimaginable plot twist in successful and riveting television series.
But as Co Cdr Tom Chandler determinedly continues to search for the missing crew members of his former missile destroyer, the USS Nathan James, on The Last Ship Season 3 Episode 3, the rationale of the ship's enemy surprisingly begins to become understandable.
As the Chief of Naval Operations tries to track down the captives, the American public begins to question President Jeffrey Michener about whether the country is headed into war with China. They have doubts over their safety after hearing that Chinese President Peng has been withholding the virus' cure from the U.S.'s Asian allies.

An “impressive” new adversary, new responsibilities and new faces are all a part of The Last Ship‘s Season 3 voyage (beginning Sunday at 9/8c, with a two-hour premiere).

Whereas Season 1 of the TNT action-drama chronicled the search for a cure to an apocalyptic virus, and Season 2 was about getting it to shore, the coming cycle revolves around the difficult task of ensuring that the cure gets to those who need it — especially when a global power player is out to make sure it doesn’t.

Following up on the recently announced casting of Rhona Mitra in the Michael Bay produced adaptation of William Brinkley’s novel The Last Ship, we have news of a bit of casting shuffle. Originally, Titus Welliver was given a part in the TNT pilot, but due to an unforeseen health emergency concerning Welliver’s wife, he was unable to commit to the part. But that’s okay. As awesome as Welliver is – and believe me when I say I get chills of excitement whenever I hear his name is attached to something – the man replacing him is of almost legendary status among the world of television. Do you think you can handle the news? It doesn’t matter, because nobody can handle the likes of Adam “Angry Grunt” Baldwin!

Chuck vet Adam Baldwin has replaced Titus Welliver in TNT’s pilot The Last Ship.
From big-screen helmer Michael Bay, the apocalyptic pilot follows a Navy crew facing a new existence after a pandemic destroys most of Earth’s population.
As reported by Deadline, the Lost actor had to depart the project rather suddenly due to a family emergency. Baldwin — who recently guest-starred on Law & Order: Svu — will now portray Mike Slattery, second in command to Eric Dane’s Captain Tom Chandler. If The Last Ship does go to series, the cabler will likely find a spot in the cast for Welliver.
