Immigration has often been a topic that sparks strong emotions around the globe, and it is an especially hot topic this election season, particularly when you have a U.S. presidential candidate characterizing undocumented immigrants not as “human” but rather as “animals” and using phrases such as “they are poisoning the blood of our country” at campaign rallies. Now seems to be a perfect time for a powerful new film, The Absence of Eden, to perhaps help lower the temperature and show the human side of those trying to cross the border into a new and hopefully better life.

Heels has nailed its landing after Starz canceled the series in 2023. Netflix and Lionsgate Worldwide Television Distribution Group have agreed to a licensing agreement for the two seasons of critically-acclaimed drama from Mike O’Malley.
Deadline has learned there is an option for a third season, but that all depends on the availability of stars Stephen Amell, who booked the lead role in the Suits spinoff, and Alexander Ludwig, who’s toplining Earth Abides for MGM+. A spokesman for Lionsgate declined to comment.
Heels revolves around the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Amell and Ludwig) war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those...

Starz is canceling four of its series, Variety has learned exclusively. Specifically, “Heels,” “Run the World,” and “Blindspotting” will not get new seasons at the cable network, while “The Venery of Samantha Bird” Season 1 is being scrapped without airing.
“Heels,” “Run the World,” and “Blindspotting” all recently aired their second season at Starz, while “The Venery of Samantha Bird” was in production on its first season. Production was shut down, however, at the onset of the WGA strike. It was reported at the time that only two episodes of the first season were left to shoot.
“The Venery of Samantha Bird” was to star Katherine Langford as the title character. Per the official logline, “Samantha, while visiting family in New England, reconnects with her childhood sweetheart and falls headlong into a seemingly perfect storybook romance. But the couple’s picture-perfect love story isn’t as sweet as it seems on the surface.

The official trailer for “Heels” Season 2 is finally here, and it’s clear we’re in for an emotional ride.
The sophomore season, which premieres July 28 on Starz, picks up after Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) has been through the ringer in his personal life after parting ways with his family. Meanwhile, his brother, Ace (Alexander Ludwig), is nowhere to be found.
“Who am I? A man who’s wife and son have left him and doesn’t know where is brother is,” Spade says in the trailer. “I don’t know what I have to do to find the guy that I was before, [but] I’m gonna figure it out.”
While Jack — and fans of the family-owned wrestling organization — question how to move forward without his brother at his side, Jack leans on his Duffy Wrestling League (Dwl) family as the group battles outside threats and Jack steps back into the ring.

For the stars and creative team of Heels, the Starz drama is more than just an inside look at the world of professional wrestling. Heels tackles universal themes that extend far beyond the the scripted fights and spandex-clad heroes and villains of Dwl for a deep and resonating story of passion, brotherhood, forgiveness and more.
“This show that Michael [Waldron] has created that we’ve all worked on is very deep,” said writer and showrunner Mike O’Malley during the show’s TCA panel on Thursday.
Penned by Waldron and O’Malley, Heels follows brothers Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) and Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) who seek to bring back their family-owned indie wrestling promotion and carry on their father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) is a natural athlete with professional wrestling “in his blood.” The sky — in this case, presumably the WWE — is the limit for that one. But in the full-length trailer for the upcoming Starz drama “Heels,” Ace is simply trying to “hold it together.”

“Arrow” star Stephen Amell and “The Hunger Games” alum Alexander Ludwig play feuding brothers in the first trailer for Starz’s upcoming drama series “Heels.”
The drama, written and created by “Loki” creator Michael Waldron, follows a family-owned wrestling promotion company and two brothers (and rivals), who war over their late father’s legacy. As Chris Bauer notes in the trailer, “Brothers sparring, it’s a tale as old as time.”
In addition to Amell and Ludwig as Jack and Ace Spade, respectively, the series also stars Alison Luff, Mary McCormack, Kelli Berglund, Allen Maldonado, two-time Super Bowl champion James Harrison and Bauer. “In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel,” reads Starz’s description of the series. “But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

No, that’s not WWE’s Adam “Edge” Copeland in the first-look photos for Starz’s upcoming series, “Heels,” it’s his “Vikings” co-star Alexander Ludwig. But the resemblance certainly is uncanny, which bodes well for pro-wrestling fans who were hoping the Ludwig- and Stephen Amell-led drama had an authentic aesthetic.
The first look images from “Heels,” which follows a family-owned wrestling promotion in small-town Georgia, show Amell and Ludwig all costumed up as wrestlers Jack Spade and his younger brother Ace Spade, respectively. The two are getting ready to head out into the ring, with the “Arrow” alum’s character rocking the champion belt and Ludwig looking very Edge-esque (as you can see in the side-by-side comparison photos above).

Stephen Amell is recovering from a back injury sustained earlier this week while shooting his Starz’s wrestling drama, Heels, in Atlanta.
“While performing a stunt on the set of Heels this week, Stephen Amell sustained an injury to his back,” a Starz spokesperson said in a statement. “Following a medical evaluation, he is now resting and recovering at home in anticipation of his return to set.” The spokesperson added production has not been affected and continues as Amell recuperates.
Amell was immediately assessed by the on-set medic and wrestling/stunt coordinators immediately following the injury. All requisite stunt safety protocols were being observed at the time, we are told.
The actor just revealed on October 20 that he had recently contracted Covid-19. Amell told Michael Rosenbaum of his experience on Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, which was recorded a week before its October 27 release. Amell told listeners about his...

Mary McCormack is returning to the small screen.
Starz today announced the beloved actress has been cast in the role of Willie in the series Heels.
McCormack’s character is the business partner of Jack Spade (played by Stephen Amell in the series) and logistical brains behind the local wrestling organization who came up in the glory days as Wild Bill’s (Chris Bauer) valet, but grew tired of babysitting and left him just as his career took off.
His return to the local circuit complicates her life, as does the reflection of her younger self that she sees in Crystal (Kelli Berglund).
McCormack is widely known for her four seasons as a regular cast member of The West Wing, as the lead of the critically acclaimed In Plain Sight and for her role opposite Howard Stern in Private Parts.
