Musician Bob Schneider and filmmaker Robert Rodriguez were two local legends destined to cross paths in Austin, the chilled-out city they love to call home. Naturally, when they finally did, a breezy, fast and loose music video was the result. For "40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet)," the first single off Schneider's latest album "Lovely Creatures," Rodriguez took a weekend off from his wild post-production schedules on "Predators" and "Machete," called up actress Kat Dennings ("Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," "Shorts") and took to the streets to film it.
Although reuniting the two on the phone proved more difficult -- I spoke to each of them separately when a conference call was thwarted -- thanks to the magic of editing, it's as if we were all there at the same time talking about how cool Austin is, how Schneider's music became Rodriguez's personal soundtrack on "Predators" and why Rodriguez would have...

This isn't really about any particular movie. It's a music video for Bob Schneider's "40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet)." Schneider's an Austin-based musician who has a new album dropping soon, called Lovely Creatures, which is an apt description of the video. It's directed by fellow Austin resident, From Dusk Til Dawn director and Predators producer Robert Rodriguez. It features Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Thor), an adorable small child, and puppies.
No, this is not a Human Centipede trick post.
Kat Dennings and puppies. That really should be all I had to say. The song's not bad either. Not really my thing, but still, not bad.

This week has been a nostalgic one for me. Two days after I moved to Austin in 1993, I saw Bob Schneider as the hair-slinging, shorts-dragging frontman of Joe Rockhead at a Fourth of July outdoor concert at Zilker Park. I became better acquainted with Schneider that same year as a regular at the Steamboat 1874 and the Black Cat, two historic Sixth Street music venues that are long gone (although there's a huge Steamboat reunion at Threadgill's on May 16). After Joe Rockhead left the scene, Schneider fronted Ugly Americans and then The Scabs before striking out on what's proven to be quite a successful solo career.
Schneider has always been good about releasing live recordings of many of his performances, but until now the Austin musician has not really explored much on the video side of his music. That's changed recently with the help of one of Austin's busiest and most well-known filmmakers,...

Sin City/Planet Terror/From Dusk Till Dawn helmer Robert Rodriguez recently directed a music video for fellow Austin-based musician Bob Schneider's "40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet)," the first single off Schneider's latest album "Lovely Creatures." The video stars Kat Dennings, who is probably best known from Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and her small role in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but she previously worked with Robert on his family film Shorts. The video was shot over a weekend around the streets of Austin. Watch the video now embedded after the jump thanks to IFC.

Talk to Bob Schneider for five minutes and he will try to mess with you. Seriously. The long-time Austin resident, who also sings with bands the Ugly Americans, the Scabs, and as his alter ego, Joe Rockhead, is about to launch a tour to promote his latest solo album, Lovely Creatures, which dropped Sept. 29. The album is a folky, heartfelt collection of songs about love and life that belies the singer's stated goal to "seem like I don't give a fuck." When not on tour, fans can find Schneider every Monday night in the Saxon Pub in Austin, where he'll try out...
