Looking back, the early nineties were the best of times and worst of times for Batman fans. In 1989, fans got their first big-budget Hollywood Batman movie, followed by the 1992 sequel Batman Returns. Both of these films boasted A-list talent and made huge money. But they weren’t really interested in Batman, at least not the guy that comic book readers loved.
But 1992 saw the launch of Batman: The Animated Series, a cartoon that gave fans some of the best ever tales of the Dark Knight, in any media. Created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, The Animated Series took some visual cues from Burton’s movies, especially in its designs for Catwoman and the Penguin, but it was grounded in the Bronze Age comics by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams as well as 1940s cinema.

There will be spoilers for "Star Wars: Tales of the Empire," so beware.
First introduced in the limited "Obi-Wan Kenobi" TV series that debuted in 2002 on Disney+, the Fourth Sister was an early member of the Inquisitorius and helped hunt down Jedi for many years during the Dark Times. Little is known about her past, other than that she was once a Jedi who turned to the dark side and the safety of the Empire after the events of Order 66. A humanoid with greenish skin and head tails, the Fourth Sister remains largely a mystery. Thanks to the new "Star Wars: Tales of the Empire" animated shorts, we have some more details about her and her past -- and also many hints about her future.
The other "villain" that features in these stories is Barriss Offee, the young Mirialan Padawan who framed Ahsoka Tano for murder in "Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

To many, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm stands are one of the best Batman stories in filmed media and even one of the best stories all time. With its 30th anniversary now here, Warner Home Entertainment gives you a chance to see for yourself. Out now in 4k Ultra HD for the first time, the movie stands up quite well.
When it arrived in late 1993, critics hailed it but did disappointing box office and it has subsequently gone on to gain stature as it has been available in multiple packages ever since. Written by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Martin Pasko, and Michael Reaves, one would think many hands might spoil the tale, but instead, all four revered the Caped Crusader and honored him with an all-original story.

The second wave of Batmania was ignited in 1989 when Tim Burton finally got a big screen adaptation of the comic book hero into theaters. It was such a wild success in terms of merchandising that Warner Bros wanted more and quickly. Since features take two to three years, they needed something sooner and the success of their Tiny Tunes and Animaniacs encouraged them to bring the Dark Knight back to television.
Thankfully, the project was placed in the hands of Alan Burnett, Bruce Timm, and Paul Dini who were not only fans of the character but the earliest cartoon fare. Taking a visual cue from Burton and a stylistic one from the Fleischer Brothers Studio, they produced a Batman cartoon unlike anything from the 1960s or 1970s. Batman the Animated Series was sampled on prime time in September 1992 before launching on Fox Kids and for three seasons, there was nothing quite like it.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is coming back to theaters for one night only in celebration of its 25th anniversary!
One of the most beloved superhero movies ever made, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, is coming back to theaters for one night only in celebration of the film's 25th anniversary. The film will screen in select theaters on Monday, Nov. 12 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. (local times). You can purchase tickets here.
Inspired by (although not as nutty as) the "Batman: Year Two" comic book storyline (Detective Comics #575-578), Mask of the Phantasm tells the story of Batman's first confrontation with the Phantasm, an anti-hero who isn't as restricted by a code of conduct as the Dark Knight. In fact, the Phantasm is more than happy to murder mob bosses to get them off the streets. When the Phantasm arrives in Gotham and unleashes...

Low on nightmare fuel? Fill up your tank by reliving your scariest memories from The Real Ghostbusters, a truly twisted 80s cartoon...
The Real Ghostbusters was a pretty messed-up cartoon sometimes. I think that’s one of life’s universal truths. I’m not quite sure why the world needed an unholy amalgam of anime, cheesy 80s synth music, and mind-bending eldritch horror with a chiselled version of Bill Murray on top. But it did, and it still feels so right to this day.

As we near the debut of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Sepia Tones my mind races towards those pure gems of the Dark Knight that already exist in the ether of Animatia. Animatia is, of course, the fictitious country where all cartoons come from. Paul Dini is the dictator there – as he should be – and he rules with a dynamically drawn fist. And here, on this wonderful island, sit the tomes that built a generation of Bat-fans. Some (me) would say these tomes were truly the best generation of adaptations and explorations of Batman. I’d like to pontificate, ruminate, and extrapolate to you those episodes of Batman: The Animated Series (and The New Batman Adventures) that truly defined a cartoon legacy.
1 and 2. Two-Face (Parts 1 and 2)
Of all the designs Bruce Timm would bring to light for the Dark Night, it was Two-Face who took the prize in my mind for the most striking.

Blood Kiss is set in Golden Age Hollywood, a classic film noir tale of a sexy jazz singer in distress and a private investigator who takes on a little more than he bargained for when he discovers this case involves vampire murders.
"There's nothing supernatural about vampires," says Reaves, "My vampires, that is. Everything in Blood Kiss is explained in terms of a symbiotic organism that alters...

The Croods is the latest feature from DreamWorks Animation. But what does the future hold for the studio? Mark takes a look...
Arch your left eyebrow, for a moment. Good. Now, tilt your head to the side. I'll leave the smile up to you, but you must either smirk or give a big cheesy grin. You're now on your way to looking a lot like the DreamWorks Face, the expression that used to appear in pretty much every DreamWorks Animation film, usually on a talking animal of some description.
The thing is, in the past, all of DreamWorks' movies were comedies. It's since the studio has branched out into other genres, while retaining their sense of humour, that we've started sitting up and taking notice again.
For a while there, it looked like DreamWorks Animation had turned into the very corporate machine that it set out to lampoon: Disney.

Q: So I must know: did the kids in that old Saturday morning TV cartoon Dungeons & Dragons ever make it back to the "real" world? -- VengerFoe, Albuquerque, Nm [caption id="" align="alignright" width="330" caption="Venger"]/caption] A: Not in any of the produced episodes, but Michael Reaves, a writer who worked on the show, wrote an unproduced teleplay, "Requiem," for the end of the third season that was to serve as a season "wrap-up," and would also have been an excellent finale (since there ended up being no fourth season). At the end of the script, Hank (the jerky kid) chooses to sacrifice a chance to return home in exchange for defeating their nemesis, Venger.

Back in the 90’s Marvel were well known for their tremendous animated series – X-Men, Spiderman, Silver Surfer. But one cartoon that never made the airwaves was Captain America. In 1998, Saban Entertainment teamed up once more with Marvel to begin work on an animated series based on one of the most iconic of Marvel’s characters…
Will Meugniot (who had also worked on another war-based cartoon, G.I. Joe: The Movie) was asked to design the series alongside Frank Gomez, Shannon Denton, Roy Burdine and John Fang; and the series’ writing staff included comic book writers and authors, including Michael Reaves and Steve Engleheart. On the whole, the series was faithful to the 1940’s era Captain America in much the same way that Stan and Jack’s 1960’s retelling of Cap’s golden age stories were true to their source material – there were some changes, notably that Cap worked alongside a team...

With the 66th WorldCon coming to a close in Denver, the winners of the annual Hugo Awards have been announced by the World Science Fiction Society and "Doctor Who" is a big winner. Steven Moffat and director Hettie Macdonald won Best Dramatic Presentation-Short Form for their episode "Blink," considered to be a "Doctor Who"-lite episode from the show's third season. It beat out a very tough field that included the "Batlestar Galactica" telemovie "Razor" written by Michael Taylor and directed by Emmy-nominated Felix Enriquez Alcala; the "Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood" two-parter of "Doctor Who" written by Paul Cornell and directed by Charles Palmer; the fan-produced "World Enough and Time" from "Star Trek: New Voyages" written by Michael Reaves and Marc Scott Zicree ...
