The alien invasion comedy Hillbillies vs. Alien Chickens has taken home the top prize in this year’s Horror2Comic Contest.
The script from Nicholas Tana is described as a twist on the alien invasion genre, and centers on a vegan hillbilly who must team with a government agent to combat invading alien chickens.
Winning scripts in the Horror2Comic contest are made into comic books, and in turn are put into development as a feature or a TV show via Motor Content, the company whose credits include History’s Knightfall and the Michael Keaton feature The Founder. The contest has its origins as an offshoot of Script2Comic, which focuses on all genres, not just horror.
Scout Comics published last year’s Horror2Comic winner, She Bites, a story centering on a 134-year-old vampire trapped in the body of a 9-year-old girl.

I’ve been a huge fan of writer/director Kyle Rankin’s work ever since I first saw Infestation. His blend of comedy and horror really appealed to my sensibilities. Which means I’m always excited to see what he does next. However all his previous efforts never prepared me for Run Hide Fight… Gone are the laughs and in comes a shockingly real look at school shootings, from inside the building.
A normal school day is brought to a brutal halt when invaded by armed students on a murderous mission. As the shooting starts and the blood starts to flow, Zoe (Isabel May) is lucky to get out alive. But then she heads back inside...

Ahead of FrightFest’s UK premiere of Run Hide Fight at the Glasgow Film Festival, director Kyle Rankin talks about the personal tragedy that inspired the film, the influence of 70s cinema and the huge importance of film festivals.
Run Hide Fight was inspired by a tragic incident in your own past so did that make it a harder script to write?
In 1999, my best friend and fellow filmmaker, Shayne Worcester, was gunned down during a mugging in San Francisco. It came to light years later that the event was a gang initiation — meaning guys who wanted to be part of a gang were tasked with going out and killing a random civilian that night. He was only 29.
I think about him all the time, so I wouldn’t say that writing Run Hide Fight was harder…it was instead maybe cathartic.

The premise of a US high school shooting is often canon fodder for an all-out action movie, but Kyle Rankin’s Run, Hide, Fight is far more than that. Like its main character it should not be overlooked or underestimated. At the helm on writing and directing duties, Rankin has made a film that is sharp, layered and full of suspense.
Showing as part of Glasgow Film Festival’s renowned FrightFest the film centres around teenager Zoe (Isabel May), who we meet in a hunting scene with her father that ends on a philosophical note about mercy. From the get-go you instantly get a sense of underlying trauma in that family dynamic and that typical teenage angst is far from its root.
There is a lure to May’s screen presence well before the events at the high school, a quality that is gripping and maintained throughout the course of the film.

“I didn’t want to make another Elephant or We Need to Talk About Kevin,” says Kyle Rankin about his new movie, Run Hide Fight. “There are enough films that look at school shootings from the perspective of the perpetrators. I wanted to focus on the victims.”
Run, Hide, Fight certainly doesn’t feel like a Gus van Sant or Lynne Ramsay movie. Instead of pondering the unfathomable motives of the killers and the senselessness of school shootings, or —as with Brady Corbet’s Vox Lux, how the sickening repetition of these massacres have traumatized American youth — Kyle Rankin, more ...

If “‘Elephant’ meets ‘The Hunger Games'” is your idea of an enticing elevator pitch, you’re unlikely to be disappointed by “Run Hide Fight,” though you might want to take a long hard look at your enthusiasm. Kyle Rankin’s fictitious school-shooting thriller echoes multiple previous films in its evocation of post-Columbine classroom terror, before dubiously distinguishing itself by assuming the perspective of one female student tough enough to fight back. Merely pedestrian at the levels of direction, craft and performance, the film instead makes a grab for attention by peddling an ambiguous line on gun control and eye-for-an-eye morality. Any controversy that ensues, however, won’t disguise the phoniness of this exploitation exercise, which milks the worst fears of millions in pursuit of empty tension. A place in Venice’s official selection, even out of competition, was generous.

‘Run Hide Fight’ Review: Glib Cinestate Thriller Turns a School Shooting into a Clichéd Action Movie
You might not expect Cinestate — the right-leaning Dallas production company responsible for “Dragged Across Concrete,” “Brawl in Cell Block 99,” and allegedly enabling a pattern of sexual abuse by producer Adam Donaghey — to create a sensitive and thought-provoking film about America’s epidemic of school shootings, but even if you lowered the bar down to the ninth layer of hell the company’s latest and least defensible effort would still manage to slink under it. An unholy cross between “Elephant” and “Die Hard” that depicts an armed attack on a Texas high school with all the realism of Dana Loesch’s wet dreams, “Run Hide Fight” is . It’s a movie made by someone who’s seen too many movies, and now made at least one too many as well.

So somebody somewhere one day had a thought: “What if ‘Die Hard’ except a school shooting?” and not only didn’t they immediately check themselves for other symptoms of lead poisoning but thought, “Yep, that’s a winner” and went on to make the movie. Presumably, that person was Kyle Rankin, writer-director of the staggeringly misguided, deeply noxious “Run Hide Fight.” But let’s not wholly exonerate all the friends, collaborators, script-readers, caterers, mailmen, grocers, friendly passersby, and supportive family pets who may have had a hand, however slight, in helping this thing to come to pass.

Writer-director Kyle Rankin’s school shooting drama Run Hide Fight debuted out of competition at the Venice Film Festival today, and made for a press conference that focused largely on the issue of gun violence in the U.S. and included a spirited take from star Thomas Jane.
Run Hide Fight, made in relative secrecy last winter, follows 17-year-old Zoe Hull (Isabel May) who uses her wits, survival skills and compassion to fight for her life, and those of her fellow classmates, against a group of live-streaming school shooters.
Offering a teen’s perspective on the subject matter, May said, “I remember being in school and realizing that the students around me including myself, in odd ways, would daydream about how we would fight or protect our fellow students from a potential shooter. It’s been 17 years since Gus Van Sant stunned and polarized audiences with Elephant, his transfixing, oddly lyrical response to the Columbine High School massacre of 1999, a national tragedy now almost normalized by the sickening frequency of mass shootings that have continued to stain American soil. A number of films in the years since have reflected on school shootings in provocative ways, among them We Need to Talk About Kevin, And Then I Go and Vox Lux. What’s most notable about Kyle Rankin’s slick and compulsively watchable genre entry Run Hide Fight is the utter shallowness of its psychological perspective.

No one was more surprised than director Kyle Rankin when his new film “Run Hide Fight” was added to the Venice Film Festival lineup after the first group of titles had already been announced.
The “Night of the Living Deb” filmmaker knew the story of the victims of a school shooter might draw controversy, but he wasn’t sure if it would resonate as much internationally, given that school shootings are far more prevalent in American than anywhere else.
Isabel May stars in the action thriller as a teenager who must try to survive a group of armed assailants who are live-streaming an attack on her high school. Thomas Jane is her father, an ex-special forces member who bonds with her on hunting trips after the death of her mother. “Prince of the City” star Treat Williams plays the town sheriff. Voltage Pictures handles international sales.

The Venice Film Festival has completed the lineup of its 77th edition with the addition of “Fiori, Fiori, Fiori!,” a short film shot during the lockdown by Luca Guadagnino, the director of Oscar-nominated “Call Me By Your Name,” and U.S. film “Run Hide Fight,” about a high-school massacre.
Both titles will play in the Out of Competition section of the festival, which runs on the Lido as a physical event Sept. 2 to 12.
Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera described the films as “two irreducibly different models of filmmaking, which are the expression, however, of an identical and compelling creative energy.”
In documentary “Fiori, Fiori, Fiori!,” shot during the Covid-19 lockdown, Guadagnino travels to Sicily to knock on the doors of childhood friends and discuss with them their experience during the pandemic.
Barbera describes the film as a “personal escape” for Guadagnino “in search of the people, places and relationships of his youth.

The zombie romantic comedy is a difficult film to get right. It all depends on the tone of the script and the direction taken by the filmmaker in bringing it to the screen. Films in this very specific sub-genre either focus primarily on one of the elements – love (Warm Bodies), laughs (A Little Bit Zombie), or blood and guts (Braindead, aka Dead Alive) – or strike a fine balance between all three (Shaun of the Dead, Deathgasm), all to varying degrees of success. In Night of the Living Deb, director Kyle Rankin (Infestation) seems to be trying for the latter, but does he succeed?

A parody of nature run amok movies like The Swarm, Phase IV and Them!, Infestation was a near-perfect comedic take on the killer-insect genre (even though those original creature-features are funny enough as they are) with stellar performances from Chris Marquette and Ray Wise. Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? I'm interrupting this normally scheduled column so I can talk ever so briefly about a project I'm not only excited about but only discovered earlier this week.

There's a lot of panels to cover, so let's just get to it. Check out the pertinent film and television panels set for the first two days of the show after the jump.
The first "day" of the show is Preview Night only, so there's only a couple things happening that night:
