Uma Thurman and Samuel L Jackson didn’t share any screen time in Pulp Fiction (though their paths crossed briefly in Kill Bill Vol 2) so this comic thriller can take credit for turning the Tarantino twosome into a double-act for the first time. Thurman plays Patrice, a highly strung, Adderall-snorting Manhattan gallery owner whose acquisitions haven’t exactly set the art world alight. Enter Gordon (Jackson), a Brooklyn bialy baker and underworld stooge who proposes funnelling mob money through her books as supposed payment for artworks.
Local hoodlum Reggie (Joe Manganiello) puts paintbrush to canvas to create these bogus masterpieces, which are credited to “the Bagman” since he suffocates his enemies with carrier bags. Unexpectedly, he becomes the toast of New York, making a killing...

Nicol Paone believes Uma Thurman is the perfect person to play Patrice in 'The Kill Room'.The 53-year-old actress has been reunited with Samuel L. Jackson for the new thriller film, and Nicol - the movie's director - believes Uma is perfectly suited to the role of Patrice, an art dealer who gets involved with a money laundering scheme.Nicol told Collider: "It was because I was hounding Danielle Thomas, who is a partner at Untitled, to read the script. I just was bothering her for about a year thinking it's right up her alley. I know she'll love it, she's an art collector, she’s a big Broadway fanatic. It was her sensibility. And I was right, she loved it, and she happened to represent Uma Thurman and asked me if she could send it to Uma. "But before, while I was on a walk, my partner asked...

'The Kill Room' was rewritten in a day for Samuel L. Jackson.Director Nicol Paone has revealed how finding out Jackson was available meant the script needed reworking just before Christmas to make the character more suited to the Hollywood megastar's style of acting. She told Collider: "That role is really interesting because it was written as Herschel, a 72-year-old Jewish man."And when we were discussing the casting, Uma [Thurman] texted me, 'Is Sam Jackson an option?' And I was like, 'Are you kidding? Of course.'"And so Jonathan and I had a day to rewrite the script before the Christmas break to get it to Sam."Despite needing to do some work over the festive period, Paone admitted it was a "great problem" to be faced with. She added: "I was also meeting my fiancée's family that day over Christmas, and so I basically had to go in,...

An exclusive clip for crime thriller The Kill Room has arrived, reuniting Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman on the cast list for the first time in two decades.
In The Kill Room clip, Uma Thurman’s art dealer Patrice approaches Samuel L. Jackson’s Gordon in a bakery seeking a piece of art she can sell. Gordon is a bit cagey and the two go back and forth on “financial legitimacy”, which seems like an awfully tame term for what they’re about to engage in. This is set up earlier in the movie, when we see Gordon pitching Patrice to sell a piece of art, knowing she has a financial problem that she needs help with. What does Gordon get in return? A cut…and certainly a little something else.

A really wet Friday in New York – National Weather Service flash flood warning wet – is likely to take a bite out of specialty film in one of its biggest markets this weekend. Alamo Drafthouse shut its NYC locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island until further notice due to “severe flooding in and around the area,” saying “Please everyone stay dry & stay safe, and we hope to have you back at the movies very soon.” Subways are jammed up and the water makes it hard to get around.

The art world is a cutthroat and judgemental arena. You’re the cat’s pajamas one day, but you’re old news if you take too long to deliver your next masterpiece. Surrounded by snobbery, bitter wine, and diamond-encrusted vultures waiting to pick your talented bones clean, artists endure a lot to remain relevant, and some would even kill for the chance to keep their spot in the public eye. In today’s The Kill Room trailer, a hitman, his boss, and an art dealer concoct a money laundering scheme that accidentally turns an assassin into an overnight avant-garde sensation.
Nicol Paone directs from a script by Jonathan Jacobson, with Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Joe Manganiello leading the cast, with Maya Hawke, Mike Doyle, Debi Mazar, Matthew Maher, Marianne Rendón, Gionna Daddio, Jennifer Kim, Amy Keum, Brandon Curry, and more.

Tarantino on Why Michelle Yeoh Wasn’t in ‘Kill Bill’: Unbelievable ‘Uma Thurman Could Kick Your Ass’
Michelle Yeoh knows why her longtime fan, Oscar winner Quentin Tarantino, didn’t cast her in his martial arts film “Kill Bill.”
Tarantino has been open about the fact that vengeful The Bride (Uma Thurman) was directly inspired by Yeoh’s role in 1992 action-comedy “Police Story 3,” but Yeoh was never asked to battle it out with The Bride in either “Kill Bill” or its sequel.
In a Town & Country cover story, Yeoh admitted that she “asked Quentin the same question” about not being cast in the 2003 movie or its subsequent 2004 “Vol. 2.”
“He’s very smart,” Yeoh said of Tarantino. “He said, ‘Who would believe that Uma Thurman could kick your ass?'”
Tarantino shared that he has been a “huge, huge fan” of Yeoh for decades. “There was always a twinkle in her eye,” the “Hateful Eight” director explained.
And the admiration is mutual: “Everything Everywhere All at Once...

The portmanteau word “friendsgiving” has been in the popular American lexicon for over a decade now, though the institution it describes is far, far older. Surely for as long as families have been gathering to bond, feast and drive each other gradually crazy over Thanksgiving, the option of a less fractious holiday spent with kith rather than kin has been on the table. Yet the takeaway, such as it is, from Nicol Paone’s sketchy, loose-knit ensemble comedy “Friendsgiving” is that there ultimately isn’t much difference between the two: Turkey Day, it seems, is a recipe for conflict with or without blood relatives in attendance.
It’s a premise that “Friendsgiving” contrives by clumping together a pick-and-mix of mismatched, eccentric characters whom you can’t imagine ever willingly hanging out in the first place; whatever history or chemistry binds them is largely lost in the boozy haze of a slender screenplay.

Zany holidays have long been a staple of cinematic comedies. That being said, it’s almost always Christmas that gets the attention, leaving Thanksgiving largely in the dust. It’s a missed opportunity, too, as Thanksgiving dinners are notoriously full of awkward conversations, unfortunate political debates with a crazy relative, and the like. So, it makes sense to focus a film on the holiday. What’s more, the non-family gathering version, where friends come together to celebrate, has just as much potential. Unfortunately, Friendsgiving is a real missed opportunity to craft something hilarious. There are sporadically amusing moments, but mostly, it’s a disappointment and a waste of a very solid cast. The movie is a comedy, centered around a Thanksgiving dinner/party. It’s been a tough year for Abby (Kat Dennings) and Molly (Malin Ackerman), with relationships coming to an end. Abby is looking forward to a laid-back Thanksgiving with her best friend,...

"That's the whole point of Thanksgiving, Molly - sugar and regret!" Starring Malin Akerman and Kat Dennings, with Aisha Tyler, Chelsea Peretti, Christine Taylor, Jane Seymour, Deon Cole, Wanda Sykes, and Ryan Hansen. Defining a successful movie release has been a fraught task lately due to the coronavirus pandemic, as premium theatrical films shift to digital debuts and massive blockbusters get kicked down the calendar.
Thanks to a few transparent scoreboards like the iTunes store, however, the industry can see plainly when a hit is a hit. Last weekend, the Saban Films release “The Silencing” made a lot of noise as the top rental in the country, at the attractive price point of $6.99. The film has amassed roughly $5 million in PVOD sales, insiders familiar with the tally told Variety.

Well, this is it, folks. Time to talk about one of the most important film events of the year — the Cannes Film Festival — and which buzzy titles are up for grabs this year.
There’s a hot package starring Chris Hemsworth and Tiffany Haddish titled “Down Under Cover.” Roland Emmerich directs a sci-fi project called “Moonfall.” Newly minted Oscar winner Olivia Colman stars with Anthony Hopkins in a drama called “The Father.” And Anthony Mackie reunites with “Avengers” co-star Samuel L. Jackson in “The Banker,” while the Russo Brothers reteam with Tom Holland for “Cherry.”
This year’s lineup features everything from space odysseys to WWII dramas to rom-coms to political dramas. Some directors are heading back to the Croisette for their sixth time to compete (“Oh Mercy!” director Arnaud Desplechin), while others, like Florian Zeller, are traveling to the French Riviera town for the first time.

YouTube has given a pilot order to drama Dark Cargo, from Entertainment One and Canada’s Counterfeit Pictures and SEVEN24 Films. The project, which will be in consideration for YouTube Premium, is written by Adam and Max Reid (Sneaky Pete) and will be executive produced by Ben Stiller and Nicky Weinstock via their Red Hour Productions banner. eOne serves as the studio.
Dark Cargo is described as a high-octane, cliffhanger-driven, neo-noir thriller set in the big rig cab of Joe Dobbs as he traverses the darkest nights of his life. What begins as a random encounter with a disturbed stranger turns into a race against time, the police, and even more malevolent forces. All the while, Joe just wants to get back to his family.
Dark Cargo joins two other pilots at YouTube, comedies The Edge of Seventeen, based on the critically praised film of the same name, and It’s a Man’s World.
