‘#LookAtMe,’ Film Denied Exhibition in Singapore, Lands U.S. Distribution with Buffalo 8 (Exclusive)
Ken Kwek’s acclaimed Singaporean film “#LookAtMe” has secured North American distribution with Buffalo 8.
The deal is exclusive for the North American territory and non-exclusive for the rest of the world.
The film is a tragicomedy following the family of a teenage YouTuber who posts an irreverent video lampooning a megachurch pastor in defense of his gay twin brother. He is vilified by society and tried by a criminal justice system that tests his sanity and the bonds of his family.
This is Kwek’s second feature film after “Unlucky Plaza” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014. “#LookAtMe” won several awards on the festival circuit including prizes at New York Asian Film Festival, Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema, Montreal Independent Film Festival, LGBTQ+ Toronto Film Festival and San Francisco Queer Film Festival.

This romantic drama focuses on the relationship between two young immigrants working in Singapore – Lily (Rhen Escaño), a Filipino housemaid employed by a middle-aged couple (Adrian Pang and Michelle Saram), and Minh (Ho Thanh Trung), a Vietnamese busboy working for his aunt. The movie provides not only a picture of socio-economic disproportion between different social classes in Singapore, but also underlines the universal desire for human connection.

The tributes to the Filipino and Singaporean cinema in Vesoul this year were definitely among the most interesting aspects of the programme, particularly because both included movies that aimed simply at entertaining their audience. “Forever Fever”, a homage/remake of “Saturday Night Fever”, is definitely one of those films.
“Forever Fever” screened at Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema
The story takes place in 1977 Singapore, when the fever of “Saturday Night Fever” is taking over the whole world. For Hock, a young clerk in a supermarket however, life is still just a burden, as he is not particularly fond of his job, while in his house he has to face his mother's whining, his father's criticism, and the constant comparison with his younger, perfect brother Leslie, who is studying to be a doctor. “#LookAtMe” is the sophomore feature by Singaporean director Ken Kwek, and premieres at the New York Asian Film Festival. In it, twins Sean and Ricky Marzuki (portrayed brilliantly by yao) are small-time YouTube pranksters ready to trick their mother Nancy (Pam Oei) for some views. The problem is, no one is watching. One night, Sean is invited by his girlfriend Mia (Ching Shu Yi in her feature debut) to attend her church. There, he witnesses an extremely homophobic monologue by Pastor Josiah Long (magnificently flamboyant and detestable Adrian Pang) that openly vilifies people like Sean’s gay brother, Ricky. Angry at the pastor and his congregation, Sean makes a fiery YouTube video making fun of the pastor. The problem is, homophobia is somewhat permitted due to Section 377A of the Penal Code of Singapore, which criminalizes sexual relations between men, while fighting it openly is not. A veteran of several short and documentary subjects, Anshul Tiwari’s narrative feature “Before Life After Death” has its world premiere in the Panorama strand of the Singapore International Film Festival.
In the film, a rebellious female student and a reticent middle-aged gynecologist, both of Indian origin, strike up an unlikely bond as they each confront a life-altering incident.
“Being a documentary filmmaker in the region gave me unique insight and access into Singapore’s civil society. The writer, Debasmita Dasgupta, created a narrative around the disparity between working and upper-class Singaporeans of Indian origin. She and I spoke a lot about sisterhood and how sometimes a woman’s best friend is another woman despite [her] being a stranger,” Tiwari told Variety. “People often talk about the fault lines where Singapore’s diversity has clear-cut boundaries despite sharing the same space. But we have seen a different side to Singapore where intercultural commingling is so natural,...

The sharks in a supermarket flick Bait 3D (review) was met with a fine reception from most fans for a good reason - it was a lot of bloody fun! That being said sequel talk has begun chumming the waters.
Twitch reports that Arclight Films has announced a sequel to the Australian shark-in-a-supermarket thriller Bait, directed by Kimble Rendall, and starring Xavier Samuel, Julian McMahon, Sharni Vinson, Phoebe Tonkin, Martin Sacks, Alice Parkinson, Alexander Russell, Qi Yuwu, Adrian Pang, Lincoln Lewis and Damien Garvey.
The original intense 3D thriller tells the story of a group of survivors in a sleepy beach town who suddenly find themselves trapped inside a submerged supermarket following a freak tsunami. As they try to escape to safety, they soon discover that there is a predator among them more deadly than the threat of drowning—vicious great white sharks lurking in the water, hungry for fresh meat.

A film centred around sharks attacking people in a flooded supermarket isn.t often compared to the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and actor Sam Shepard. But leave aside the unique challenges of shooting in water for nine weeks with actors (including children) standing on shelves, and a mix of animatronic and computer-generated sharks . all captured in 3D . and that.s exactly what you.re left with according to director Kimble Rendall.
.Once we were working with the actors it was a bit like doing a Sam Shepard play on the stage because it really was like a theatre. There were eight actors out on the set and they don.t really leave,. although he laughingly adds .some of them leave . not by choice..
It is still a shark movie after all.

Outside of films also premiering at Tiff — including most notably Ramin Bahrani‘s At Any Price and Terrence Malick‘s To the Wonder – they have a strong batch of films not at that fest. I needed a few minutes to regain my composure after watching the sales trailer for Kimble Rendall's Bait 3D, yes, that other 3-D shark movie. The footage is absolutely hilarious as nearly every single aspect looks staged - it's like watching a stunt show at Universal Studios or something (kind of reminds me of their ongoing "Waterworld" show). The shark popping out of the water looks like the cheap Jaws effect on the studio tour, and the way the set is dressed makes it look terribly staged. Even the shotgun blast at the end reminds me of when the tour boat captain on Disney's "Jungle Cruise" shoots at a wild Hippopotamus. Xavier Samuel, Julian McMahon, Sharni Vinson, Phoebe Tonkin, Martin Sacks, Alice Parkinson, Alexander Russell, Qi Yuwu, Adrian Pang, Lincoln Lewis, Damien Garve all star.

Singapore may be geographically small but it has big plans for its screen industry, including making good use of its co-production treaty with Australia. Miguel Gonzalez reports.
Next month, the screen industry’s eyes will be in Singapore, as the island nation hosts its first market/conference/ trade and technology exhibition, simply called ScreenSingapore.
It is part of the country’s plan to become a regional media hub. The local media industry employs 60,000 people, with about a 30 production companies, 20 animation studios and a dozen post-production houses. Plans for growth include the development of Mediapolis @ one-north – a 19-hectare innovation and R&D complex that by 2020, will host soundstages, digital production and broadcast facilities.
The country’s Media Development Authority launched the blueprint for the nation’s media industries in 2009. The Media Fusion Plan aims to make Singapore “the trusted global capital for New Asia Media” by strengthening the media infrastructure and...

Watching Glen Goei's "That's The Way I Like It" is like buying one of those discount Top 40 compilation CDs and discovering that the cuts aren't recordings by the original artists, but you decide to keep it anyway because you enjoy hearing the songs.
In other words, while the semi-autobiographical comedy set in disco-era Singapore may borrow liberally from the plots of "Saturday Night Fever", "Strictly Ballroom", "The Purple Rose of Cairo" and "Play It Again, Sam", you're still taken with the filmmaker's considerable moxie. It may be a knockoff, but it's a charming knockoff.
Shot in English, the Miramax release could earn a little following with its generous servings of East-meets-West kitsch, not to mention all those booty-shaking cover tunes.
Singapore-raised Goei provides an interesting historical context for his debut directorial effort by setting it in his hometown during the years following its independence from Great Britain. Described as a melting pot where people held a cup of Earl Grey tea in one hand and a pair of chopsticks in the other, Singapore's search for its identity is echoed by that of the film's characters.
For Hock (Adrian Pang), a twentysomething underachiever who works as a grocery clerk and lives at home with his critical parents, salvation comes in the form of the local movie theater, where his beloved kung fu movies have been replaced by something called "Forever Fever".
It is here where an enterprising Goei, obviously unable to secure rights to "Saturday Night Fever", has simply created his own version, complete with a vague Travolta look-alike who for some reason plays Tony Manero with a Southern drawl.
Tony talks to Hock, literally, stepping out of the screen and serving as his mentor. Soon Hock finds himself swapping Bruce Lee for The Bee Gees (or, at least, sound-alikes), taking dance lessons with his childhood friend Mei (Medaline Tan) and entering a disco contest with a cash prize big enough to buy his dream bike.
Meanwhile, back at home, Hock's seemingly perfect, fine-featured brother Leslie (Caleb Goh) returns from med school with a revelation that doesn't exactly sit well with Dad (Lim Kay Siu): He's going to have a sex-change operation as soon as he can come up with the money.
With his family in turmoil, Hock, now wearing pants so impossibly tight that one fears for the well-being of future generations, determinedly presses onward with a little encouragement from his supportive younger sister, Mui (Pamela Oei).
While it's possible to play connect the dots with all the pilfered plotting, writer-director Goei nevertheless manages to infuse "That's the Way I Like It" with an infectious amiability. Even his uneven cast, all speaking the local dialect known as Singlish, make up in personality what they might lack in experience.
Technical contributions add a bit of polish to the cultural color courtesy of cinematographer Brian Breheny ("The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert"), editor Jane Moran ("Strictly Ballroom") and production designer Laurence Eastwood ("Phar Lap"), while costume designer Ashley Aeria has a disco ball dusting off all that vintage polyester.
