From numerous soundtrack reissues and questionable spin-offs like Christmas In The Stars to miscellaneous releases like 1977’s gold-selling The Story Of Star Wars, the Star Wars franchise is no stranger to record store shelves. But that wasn’t enough for digital artist Steven Lear. At his incredible, eye-deceiving site, Why The Longplay Face?, Lear mashes up classic album covers with classic movies with great wit. Jack Nicholson from The Shining, for instance, might find himself adorning a Human League record, while the hit men of Pulp Fiction might don turtlenecks and pose as Simon & Garfunkel. If Lear has a specialty, it’s creating alternate universe albums with characters from Star Wars. This is what music history would have been like if the various Wookiees and droids from the George Lucas-created space saga had ventured beyond the perimeter of the soundtrack bin and infiltrated every other genre of popular ...

Pop-punk can't slow down. It's impossible to spend even a short time in a karaoke bar without hearing someone knock a Blink-182, Goldfinger, or Paramore track out of the park. These are songs that make people genuinely happy. (Except "Adam's Song." Total downer. Don't sing that one.) For this installment of our "Get a Room" series (previously featuring the Bangles' Susanna Hoffs) we invited pop-punk vets All Time Low to sing their biggest hit, "Dear Maria, Count Me In." On the same day we filmed, they released their new record, Future Hearts, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard chart in the U.S., and No. 1 in the U.K. After warming up with the Human League's "Don't You Want Me," the band tweeted out our filming location, and before long we had the room filled with All Time Low superfans. They packed out the room and sang...

Los Angeles - The Killers' Brandon Flowers is stepping out solo once again this spring, and last night at the Troubador in L.A. he gave a quick preview of three new songs and the sounds fans can expect out of "The Desired Effect," out May 19. Flowers also further revealed his love for a major influence -- Inxs -- as he launched into a cover of the Aussie band's "Don't Change." "One of the things most profound about Inxs is this song we're about to cover, it has such a strong identity," Flowers said, also mentioning that Inxs was the subject of the first band poster he ever bought. "['Don't Change'] is on their first record, and they seemed to really know who they were. You don't really hear that a lot anymore." Flowers' fresh tunes "Dreams Come True," Peter Gabrielian "Still Want You" and glittery single "Can't Deny My Love" have a bright,...

Noah Baumbach should ask James Murphy to score all of his films, because, at this point, the duo can do no wrong. Their latest collaboration is the soundtrack for While We're Young, a film about old couples who can't remember what life was like before it became terminally boring, starring Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Amanda Seyfried, Adam Driver, and Ad-Rock.Murphy selected songs from artists like Haim, Paul McCartney, and A Tribe Called Quest for the album, but the real joy is hearing the original music he wrote for the score. The beautiful "We Used to Dance," released today, is a gorgeous instrumental that sounds like it could have been plucked from Brian Eno's Another Green World (or an early Human League album). Murphy recorded two other songs for the soundtrack, including another original, "Only the Stars Above Welcome Me Home," and his take on David Bowie's 1976 classic "Golden Years.

Jimmy Fallon decided to take action Monday after Kelly Clarkson said she has had trouble getting other musicians to collaborate with her. Spurred by Kelly Clarkson's recent comments that she has been unable to find a suitable duet partner, Jimmy Fallon offered his services on last night's The Tonight Show. Together, the couple sang a dozen duets in a four-minute mega-medley. Much like Fallon's ongoing History of Rap series with Justin Timberlake, the late-night host and the "Heartbeat Song" singer take a similar journey through five decades of chart-topping duets, kicking things off with Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe" before bringing it on home with Lionel Richie and Diana Ross' "Endless Love.

After claiming she's had a hard time finding people to collaborate with musically (then saying she was only joking), Kelly Clarkson found the perfect duets partner when she showed up on Monday's Tonight Show.
The American Idol alum and Jimmy Fallon performed a medley of the greatest duets of all time, including Jennifer Warnes and the late Joe Cocker's classic "Up Where We Belong", the Human League's "Don't You Want Me", Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" ...to name a few. Fallon impressed the audience when he busted out his Aaron Neville for the ballad "I Don't Know Much" that also featured Linda Ronstadt.
This past week, the 32-year-old "Since U Been Gone" singer -- who's won three GRAMMYs and has had two No. 1 albums -- told BBC Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw that she has trouble finding collaborators. "I honestly would collaborate with a lot of people, but everyone...

It’s hip to be square yet again, it seems. The London-premiered musical version of American Psycho—famously a Bret Easton Ellis novel, then a cult classic 2000 film with Christian Bale—will get a stateside production this spring at Off Broadway’s Second Stage Theatre.
The musical—which alternates new, electronic-fused tunes by Tony-winning composer Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) along with the film’s cheeky use of 1980s tunes by Phil Collins, Human League, Tears For Fears, and the aforementioned Huey Lewis & The News, among others—received much acclaim in its 2013 premiere on the West End. In Dimitri Kirsanoff's Menilmontant a destitute waif, betrayed and abandoned by the man who seduced her, sits on a park bench with her newborn infant. Beside her is an old man eating a sandwich. This wordless exchange is one of the greatest moments ever committed to film. Nadia Sibirskaia’s face reveals all of life’s cruel mysteries as she gazes upon a crust of bread.
The persistence of hope is the dark angel that underlies despair, and here it taunts her mercilessly. A whole series of fluctuations of expression and movement in reaction to anguish, physical pain involving hesitation, dignity, ravenous hunger, survival, self-contempt, modesty, boundless gratitude. All articulated with absolute clarity without hitting notes (without touching the keys). Chaplin could have played either the old man on the bench (his mustache is a sensory device!) or Nadia. Let's get one thing out of the way from the off. Walking on Sunshine, a jukebox musical featuring all your favourite pop hits from the '80s, can in no way be recommended to anyone under the guise of being "a good movie". The story ticks off every rom-com cliché in the book, the characters have all the appeal of third-degree sunburn, the acting frequently hits pantomime levels and the production values on both the recorded tracks and song and dance numbers leave something to be desired.
Yes, Walking on Sunshine really does make Mamma Mia! look like Citizen Kane. And yet, despite all this, you can't take your eyes off it for a second. One thing you can't accuse this film of is lacking in car-crash entertainment value.

It doesn’t seem possible that it was around 30 years ago that A Flock of Seagulls ran so far away or Modern English melted with us, but it was. The story behind those acts, their biggest hits, and dozens of other New Wave acts are captured in all their ‘80s bad hairdo-ed, brightly colored-glory in “Mad World: An Oral History of New Wave Artists And Songs That Defined The 1980s.” Written by Lori Majewski and Jonathan Bernstein, with a forward by Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and an afterward by Moby, the book examines the New Wave era through the filter of 36 songs associated with the time, such as Gary Numan’s “Cars,” Duran Duran’s “Girls On Film” and The Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now.” Each chapter deals with one act and, while not limited to the group’s biggest hit, explores the story behind that tune and the...

Vic And Bob return to our screens with the sitcom House Of Fools. Here's Ryan's review of its debut episode, The Conan Affair...
Veteran comedy duo Vic and Bob are perhaps best known for their own brand of surrealist light entertainment, as seen in Vic Reeves Big Night Out, The Smell Of Reeves And Mortimer and Shooting Stars (to name but a few), they've also been known to tinker with the traditional sitcom format from time to time.
In 1992, the pair wrote and starred in The Weekenders, a one-off pilot for Channel 4. Its typically off-the-wall story took in a pub called The Farting Dashboard and The Human League's Phil Oakey selling an unidentified variety of meat in the middle of a playing field. This, unfortunately, was never picked up for a full series.
Twelve years later came Catterick, a six-episode dark comedy...

For many, including myself, Tom Baker’s Fourth is the Doctor, the definite article, you might say. And though his scarf, floppy hat & love of jelly babies have helped, there’s a long-forgotten musical facet to his appeal.
All but the most dedicated of Whovians might not even know it exists, until now. Even though it involves a group who’d become one of the biggest electronic/pop acts of the Eighties, the Human League’s 1981 instrumental ‘ Tom Baker’, released towards the end of the great man’s time in the Tardis, remains to most a relic of a band having regenerated its line-up and in the process of finding its sound, one which even they themselves appear to have quickly disowned.
Nonetheless, let’s delve deeper, with a few timely diversions, and hopefully in the process raise it from a B-side (first issued with the ‘Boys & Girls’ single) to an undisputed A!

Last night’s episode of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon took an unexpected turn when writer/comedian/actor Stephen Merchant showed up with a little game he invented with his pals John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. It’s simple, really: Each person gets the opportunity to lip-synch two songs of choice, and whoever does the best job of lip-synching — which, Ashlee Simpson can attest, isn’t easy — wins!
But this was a three-way battle between Merchant, Fallon, and this week’s EW cover star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
First up, Merchant kicked things off with the DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince tune “Boom!

The music we grow up with shapes our tastes in later life, according to a study by Cornell University. We asked Guardian writers to tell us about the songs that take them back to their childhood homes
'My mother would listen to the Carpenters while ironing'
Of the handful of albums my parents owned, it was The Carpenters' Singles 1969-1973 that struck me the most. I remember being particularly fascinated by Rainy Days and Mondays. With the benefit of hindsight, I suspect it was because it was the first piece of music I had ever heard that appeared to perfectly suit the circumstances in which I heard it. My mother would listen to the Carpenters in the afternoon, while doing the ironing in the front room, and I remember thinking that was what the woman in the song was probably doing too. Trend-setter, impresario, phenomenon: David Bowie has shaped entire subcultures. Jon Savage traces the star's talent for reinvention and his catalytic encounter with William Burroughs
William Burroughs: The weapon of the Wild Boys is a bowie knife, an 18in bowie knife, did you know that?
David Bowie: An 18in bowie knife … you don't do things by halves do you? No, I didn't know that was their weapon. The name Bowie just appealed to me when I was younger. I was into a kind of heavy philosophy thing when I was 16 years old, and I wanted a truism about cutting through the lies and all that.
On 28 February 1974, Rolling Stone magazine published a remarkable encounter between David Bowie and William Burroughs. Entitled "Beat Godfather Meets Glitter Mainman", the event had been hosted in November 1973 by the American journalist A Craig Copetas. As published it took the form of a Q...

It's not always easy to choose the right Valentine's Day music, and on a day (and night) when there are so many important decisions to be made (where to eat, what to wear, how many sprays of cologne/perfume, whether to be jaded and cool or have fun), why not let someone else do the picking?
HuffPost Entertainment has grabbed a wide array of mixes and playlists from musicians of all sorts of genres. So whether you and your date are the type to sing along to One Direction in the car, jam to the classics or "rage" (sorry) all night, we've got something for you. The best part is, you don't even have to tell your date it's not a custom mixtape crafted solely for his or her enjoyment.

Peter is getting closer to joining the anti-Human League, losing his emotional standing as his intellect begins to eat the rest of his brain, and Walter finally figures out how the "tech" works.
This is one of the gushiest Fringe's you'll ever see - and there was an expectation throughout that a choir of angels would alight on some damaged plain and start singing "All You Need Is Love" while a montage of happy Peter-Olivia moments played across the screen, sending us all into weep-ravaged sleeps (the montage was there but the angels never showed up).

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!
Let the countdown commence, and remember ... keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!

Strictly Come Dancing star Michael Vaughan has revealed that his friends are expecting him to fall during a routine. The former England cricket captain stated that some of his friends have placed bets that he will take a tumble on the BBC One talent contest. "My mates all thought I was going to fall. I had that many bets that I had to stay up, or else I'd have been bankrupt," he joked to The Sun. "I never thought I'd go to a pub at night and start talking about the waltz to my mates - the world's gone mad." On his dancing experience, he said: "I don't dance. I am the lad who is the last up off the bar stool. I might get dragged up at the end to do a bit of Human League, but that's it. "I'm used to dance floors that are sticky with booze.

Stevie Nicks performs in New York City
Birthday shoutouts go to Anne Rice, who is 71, Susan Sarandon is 66, Liev Schreiber is 45, and Alicia Silverstone is 36.Speaking of Stevie Nicks, once again she's not among this year's nominee list for The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Yes, I know she's in with Fleetwood Mac, but her solo career deserves recognition. This year's nominees (of which five acts will be chosen) are Donna Summer, Joan Jett, The Meters, Public Enemy, N.W.A., Albert King, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Kraftwerk, Randy Newman, Procol Harum, Rush, the Marvellettes, Deep Purple and Chic. My five choices would be Heart, Donna Summer, Joan Jett, Kraftwerk, and the first band I ever saw in concert, Rush. Smash wonder-producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are developing another musical project for NBC. "The hour-long dramedy centers on a 30-something songwriter who has written the most epic love songs of our time,...

Phil Oakey has said that while he likes Rihanna's music, it is the result of a "huge" behind-the-scenes team. The Human League star told Metro that the industry has changed drastically since his band's 1980s heyday. "We could have been eclipsed by new waves of acts who had established their own huge back catalogues but the music industry doesn't make popstars any more," Oakey said. "Especially popstars from Britain." He added of the current pop scene: "A lot of the people making it now aren't (more)...

Less than day after departing his job as producer of the Oscars telecast comes word via The Playlist that "Rush Hour" and "X-Men: The Last Stand" director Brett Ratner is working on remaking 1982 comedy "The Last American Virgin".
The original, itself a remake of Israeli film "Eskimo Limon", was like many coming-of-age sex comedies of the period with a group of nerdy high school friends setting out to have sex (albeit with a bit more pathos and a rare unhappy but realistic ending). The film had a cult following but didn't achieve the notability of others like "Porky's" and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".
More interesting is that it boasts a highly impressive soundtrack with songs from The Police, Blondie, Journey, Devo, The Cars, Human League, Reo Speedwagon and U2. No further details on when Ratner would get to work on this, he's still attached to helm "Hunting Eichmann" and...

Australian music festival Rewind has been cancelled. Fans were recently outraged when organisers of the '80s-themed event relocated the festival from Woolongong to Sydney's Hordern Pavilion, blaming predicted bad weather, but inside sources have claimed that poor ticket sales prompted the move. Organisers have now revealed, however, that the event will not go ahead and all those due to attend will get their money back. A message on the festival's official website read: "Rewind [is] cancelled. Please contact your ticket agent for a refund." A full statement from organisers is expected to follow in due course. All posts on the festival's official Facebook page have also been cleared. The festival dropped headline acts Human League, Sister Sledge and Kool and the Gang from the lineup last week without warning, refusing to refund any tickets (more)...

Ever since I saw it over in Cannes earlier this year, Drive has imprinted itself indelibly upon my psyche as one of the most effortlessly cool flicks of not only this year but any year. It is a curio of the highest order, consciously refusing generic traditions and reinventing the way tone and subject matter coexist on screen in a manner that is both jarring and hugely affecting.
The official soundtrack, by former Red Hot Chilli Peppers drummer Cliff Martinez follows the trend set by the film itself, hopping genres effortlessly, but retaining a fundamental linked essence through every track that builds up an identity as important to the film as Ryan Gosling’s Driver himself. Within the space of just nineteen tracks
A lot of commenters seem content to label Drive a “bad-ass” film, a grindhouse infusion of action and simmering indie drama, with a particularly brutal fascination with...

Director Darren Aronofsky is about to start dabbling in demonic possession here pretty soon. He and his production company Protozoa Pictures recently optioned the rights to a novel by Daryl Gregory called Pandemonium, which is a disturbingly fun story of demonic possession. The plan is to take this property and turn it into one hell of a dark TV series.
Aronofsky most recently worked on directing the pilot episode for HBO's Hobgoblin. There's no argument that this guy is an incredible filmmaker that can easily tackle this kind of disturbing phycological material, and turn it into something awesomely diabolical. Want proof? Go watch Black Swan. I have yet to read Pandemonium, but it sounds like a great story, especially if you like this kind of jacked up storytelling.
Here's a description from the book:

Is there anything Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer's Venture Bros can't do? Between outrageous original characters and spoofs and parodies of existing ones that often feel more realized than their source material, it's no wonder that The Venture Bros. is one of the most consistently funny shows on television, animated or otherwise.

Bowie, Christiane F and Taxi zum Klo: these are the things that made Berlin so alluring to the British pop culture of the late 70s and early 80s. Jon Savage remembers a bewitching era
Frank Ripploh is fed up. Stuck in hospital for six weeks with some unnamed contagious sexual disease – most probably hepatitis – he receives a visit from his live-in lover. Instead of listening sympathetically to Frank's moans about the other patients, Bernd gives him a right telling-off about his promiscuity: "I hope lying here teaches you something." After Bernd leaves, a furious Frank pulls his clothes on and hails a taxi. There then follows a mad dash around various public toilets. With the meter running, he desperately searches for a quick pick-up and eventually ends up in Berlin's Tiergarten – a large public park near the centre of the city that was a notorious cruising ground at that time.

Nicolo Festa has revealed details of his upcoming showcase gig.
The quirky singer was the first act to be voted off last year’s X Factor series, after Dannii Minogue asked him to sing, what turned out to be a pretty bad rendition of Lady GaGa’s ‘Bad Romance.
He has been working on making original music ever since and will perform it for the first time in The Workshop, Hoxton this Sunday night.
Speaking to Digital Spy he said: “Contrary to what I might tweet, I’m actually still singing and working very hard.”
“I’ve been in the studio with the folk from Aztec Records and am working on some songs that really define me and my music style. I love the rock and roll from the 70′s; Linda Ronstadt, Queen, Warren Zevon and those types of songs, but also funkier stuff like Talking Heads, Human League, Michael Jackson...

Phil Oakey has said that he would be interested in recording new music with Martyn Ware in the future. Ware formed The Human League with Oakey and Ian Craig Marsh in the late 1970s, but Ware and March split off acrimoniously in 1980 to form Heaven 17. Oakey and Ware have since reconciled and The Human League and Heaven 17 shared a bill in 2008, together with fellow Sheffield band ABC, as part of the 'Steel City Tour'. Asked if he would work in the studio with Ware again, Oakey told Digital Spy: "Oh yeah, I could do that at some stage. Yeah, we've talked about that. I had lunch with him about three weeks ago." On what the collaboration could be called, Oakey's bandmate Susan Ann Sulley laughed: "It (more)...

Phil Oakey of The Human League has said that Glee executive producer Ryan Murphy was "out of order" for criticising groups who ban their music from his show. The singer-songwriter explained that he was happy that his own band's 1981 hit 'Don't You Want Me' was used in second season episode 'Blame It On the Alcohol', but maintained that musicians should be free to choose whether or not their material is covered on the Fox comedy. Kings of Leon were criticised by Murphy for refusing to let the show feature their hit 'Use Somebody' and the rock group later received support from ex-Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. Oakey told Digital Spy: "The producer was really a bit out of order with them. It's their music. If they wanna ban it from being in there I think they've (more)...

Craig here with the start of the second season of Take Three. Today: Marisa Tomei
Take One: Cyrus (2010)
Tomei is a pure delight in last year’s Cyrus. Her performance demonstrated yet again that great comic turns sometimes pass awards bodies by. But one Oscar win (for My Cousin Vinny, see below) and two other nominations ain’t too shabby. In Cyrus Tomei, at this glorious mid-stage in her career, showed her peers how unblemished by cliché a modern, mature romantic woman should be played. She’s tried more conventional rom-com roles previously – What Women Want, Only You, Someone Like You – but here, with an unstudied attractiveness, she succeeds where others often fail.
There’s no It’s Complicated-style pandering to "maturity" nor feebly vacuous youthful platitudes to her character Molly, a single mother of awkward teen Jonah Hill. She treads finely between One Hot Mama and motherly protection. Her...
