Jens Meurer’s film, beautifully shot in the summer of 2019 in Cromer on the Norfolk coast, is refreshingly free of cynicism
German filmmaker Jens Meurer has had a huge success in his native land with this vivid and richly affectionate anglophile documentary. I think I can see why, and it could even turn into a German national TV tradition – like Dinner for One, the English-language drawing room comedy sketch that the Germans love watching at Christmas. Could it be that a German documentary about an English seaside town will show us all the way ahead, and heal the psychic wounds of Brexit?
Seaside Special is all about Cromer on the north Norfolk coast in the distant summer of 2019 – and mostly about all the local people preparing to take part in the annual end-of-the-pier show, the last of its kind in the UK, or for that matter the world. This theatrical...

Imanol Rayo’s “Dog Days,” a coming-of-age story set one sizzling summer in the Spanish countryside, won the top prize at the Thessaloniki Film Festival’s Crossroads Co-Production Forum, which wrapped with an award ceremony Wednesday night.
The Basque director’s fourth feature took home the Two Thirty-Five Co-Production Award, offering full post-production image and sound to a film that’s currently in development. Producer Iker Ganuza of Spanish production outfit Lamia was on hand to accept the prize from the jury, which praised the film as “a story about both emerging and buried passions, approached with a very personal touch of sensibility.”
Speaking to Variety ahead of the Thessaloniki industry event, Rayo described his “sensual summer story” as “a reflection on the way in which the intervention of the human being or ‘climate change’ modifies the landscapes, habits and lives of ordinary people.” The director’s debut feature, “Two Brothers,...

"Not everything's about zero & one." Bohemia Media & Trinity Creative have released an official trailer for a documentary titled An Impossible Project, about the "impossible" attempt to save Polaroid and rebuild one remaining Polaroid factory. You probably know the story - it first started in 2008 when Kodak said that they'd be stopping all Polaroid film production. In a world dominated by zeroes and ones, eccentric scientist Florian "Doc" Kaps endeavors to protect the future of analog and inspire people to connect with “real” things. His crusade begins with an impossible mission: to save the last Polaroid factory. "Shot on glorious Kodak 35mm and with a stylistic nod to Jacques Tati, An Impossible Project is a warm, witty and inspiring celebration of a counter-revolution: the comeback of 'analog'." What a fascinating story! Reviews describe it as "an insightful and beautifully captured documentary" and a "genius film about optimism." Worth a look. Here's...

"Precious" dominated the 25th Spirit Awards March 5 with wins for best feature, best director (Lee Daniels), best first screenplay (Geoffrey Fletcher), best female lead (Gabourey Sidibe), and best supporting female (Mo'Nique). It's a poetic turn for the film, which focuses on the kind of girl that no one looks at twice, to have such an overwhelming acknowledgment from the independent film community. Likewise, in the pressroom, Sidibe joked that her upcoming plans included "world domination." This might have had something to do with her co-star Mariah Carey whispering that very phrase in her ear. "Mariah gives me all my bad ideas," said Sidibe, laughing. "[The film's success] really is a testament to the genius of Mr. Daniels. He has the power to transform people with completely different personalities into something 180 degrees different."Daniels expressed excitement for the upcoming Oscars, which took place two days later. "I am over the moon. Whether or not we win the Oscar,...

Berlin -- Walking around the European Film Market you hear just about as many accents as there are sellers. But step inside the screening rooms and it's hard to mistake a new lingua franca emerging from the foreign films on display: English.
Whether it's double Oscar nominee "The Last Station," produced by Berlin's Egoli Tossell Film; "Brighton Rock," StudioCanal's adaptation of the Graham Greene novel starring Helen Mirren and Sam Riley; or Joel Schumacher's "Twelve," co-produced by Gaumont, the trend is clear. European production companies from Madrid to Munich are moving into English-language features in a big way.

Berlin -- Move over, Pink Panther. Here come the Black Panthers.

London -- British producers on Monday were told to stop looking toward Hollywood for production opportunities and start looking closer to home -- Germany, for instance.
Speaking at a financing panel at the London-based Festival of German Films, filmmaker Jens Meurer ("Black Book") said he had a "bee in his bonnet" when it came to U.K. producers' ignorance of the opportunities available in Europe and, specifically, Germany.
"Stop looking to Hollywood, because you'll just end up being poodles," Meurer told the audience at London's Curzon Soho theater. "We (Europeans) have to stick together in this."
The large panel also noted that Hollywood, unlike the Brits, has been very adept at using tax incentives to locate productions in Europe over the last two or three years.
British producer Chris Curling, who is co-producing Michael Hoffman's Russia-set "The Last Station," starring Helen Mirren and James McAvoy, noted studio smarts when it came to financing.

BERLIN -- The German government is throwing its support behind moves to introduce new film-financing structures that will make it easier to shoot films in Germany and force the country's super-rich film funds to invest a certain portion of their budgets in local shoots. At a meeting to discuss the proposals Wednesday during the Berlin International Film Festival, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, Finance Minister Hans Eichel and Culture Minister Christina Weiss met with top German producers, including X Filme's Stefan Ardnt, Egoli Tossell head Jens Meurer, NFP topper Alexander Thies, and representatives of the country's top film production funds. They include a sale-and-leaseback system, based on the U.K. model, to encourage international productions to shoot in Germany and a proposal by the German film funds to agree to spend 10%-15% of all fund money on film shoots in Germany.
