One of the most famous moments in TV history came on September 26, 1962 with the airing of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" episode "Never Name a Duck," the first episode of the second season. During the opening credits of the show, Rob Petrie (Van Dyke) entered through his front door while the upbeat theme music (composed by Earle Hagan) played on the soundtrack. The announcer shouted out the names of the stars: Dick Van Dyke, Rose Marie, Morey Amsterdam, Larry Matthews, and Mary Tyler Moore. Rob stepped out of a foyer and immediately tripped over a large ottoman in his way. Van Dyke, a brilliant physical comedian, tumbled all the way over, rolling over his shoulder and landing on his back. It remains, to this day, one of the most celebrated pratfalls in the history of the medium.

Best known as gag writer Buddy Sorrell on The Dick Van Dyke Show, Morey Amsterdam wrote, produced and starred in this low budget black and white comedy made as the Van Dyke show was nearing its end. A blend of Catskill one-liners and outdated topical humor, it stars two other Van Dyke veterans, Rose Marie, Richard Deacon and a host of celebrity cameos including Forrest Tucker who shot his segment during his lunch break on F-Troop.

Diversity has historically been slow to come to the highly filmed stretch of Orion Avenue in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley known as Cameron Woods. But the same throwback suburban qualities that have long brought film crews to its spacious ranch-style homes and Cape Cods — it’s called “The Leave It to Beaver Street” for a reason — are drawing new residents who look more like the surrounding city.
Cameron Woods residents are still mostly white, a contrast to the rest of Van Nuys where it’s situated and heavily Latino. Traditionally, the 30 or so homes on this upscale stretch of Orion Avenue between Victory Boulevard and Erwin Street rarely came up for sale, instead passing to family members or the children of neighbors. But as more of those homeowners have been “aging out” or otherwise moving on, the increased turnover is bringing greater diversity.
While there are still few if any Latino residents here,...

All-round entertainer whose best-known role was as Sally Rogers in the American television sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show
As Sally Rogers in The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rose Marie, who has died aged 94, was known and cherished by the myriad television viewers who tuned in every week from 1961 to 1966 to watch the landmark sitcom.
Rose Marie, playing one of three comedy writers on the fictional Alan Brady Show, felt she had struck a blow for gender equality on American television because Sally was not a wife, mother or secretary but a writer equal to Rob Petrie (Van Dyke) and Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam). Witty and self-deprecating, desperately seeking a husband, Sally acted as a balance between Buddy, the “joke machine”, and the accident-prone Rob.

“Lady Bird” (A24), Greta Gerwig’s first solo directing effort, rode a wave of strong reviews and publicity to score the best limited opener of the year. After a disappointing prime specialty season when it has become easy to forget what a strong limited platform opening can be, her valentine to her home town of Sacramento starring Saorise Ronan debuted even higher than expectations.
This success stood in sharp contrast to the weak opening for Richard Linklater’s “Last Flag Flying” (Lionsgate). Despite a strong push for the Amazon presentation, which opened the New York Film Festival, the military veteran drama starring Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell and Laurence Fishburne couldn’t pull in specialty audiences.

“Wait for Your Laugh,” the new documentary charting the 90-year show business career of Rose Marie, includes an anecdote about the time the actress stood up to a film producer who sexually harassed her in the 1950s. In an interview with Vulture on Thursday, the “Dick Van Dyke Show” star discussed the incident, which took place during the creation of the film adaptation of her Broadway musical “Top Banana.” “I did my number called ‘I Fought Every Step of the Way’ … And when I got through, a man came over to me and said, ‘That was very good, and this.

Taking its title from a piece of advice its subject gave an up-and-coming co-star, Jason Wise's Wait for Your Laugh shows just how much more seasoned a comedian Rose Marie was than Dick Van Dyke when the latter's sitcom made him famous. A loving doc that will open the eyes of youngsters who know her only from The Dick Van Dyke Show if they know her at all, it's an unlikely outing for Wise, whose previous films Somm and Somm: Into the Bottle pointed toward a successful career making foodie-oriented docs. Though unlikely to reach nearly as broad an audience,...

Murtada here. Within the next two years, there will be three movies about The Kennedys. They seem to be as fascinating to filmmakers as the British Royal family. Even less famous members of the family are now subjects of movies.
Diana (2013) was both a car crash and framed its story by a notorious car crash. Now it's time for the Kennedys' own notorious car crash. Announced this week is Chappaquiddick with Jason Clarke as Ted Kennedy. The film tell the story of 1969 tragic car accident that involved Ted and took the life of teacher and political campaigner Mary Jo Kopechne. How Ted handled the aftermath - leaving the scene, waiting hours to report it - led of course to the end of any presidential aspirations he might have had. Many powerful film projects are generated by the Black List – the renowned collection of the best unproduced screenplays available. The latest to be developed is Letters From Rosemary, written by newcomer Nick Yarborough, and now announced as starring Academy Award nominee Emma Stone in the lead role. The film tells the story of Rose Marie “Rosemary” Kennedy – the eldest sister of President John F Kennedy. Born in 1918, Rosemary is often referred to as ‘The Forgotten Kennedy’, since she lived out the majority of her life in a Wisconsin institution, after her father, Joseph P Kennedy, had her lobotomised when she was 23 years old.

Norwegian director Sara Johnsen has yet to secure Us distribution for her previous three features, including her award winning debut Kissed By Winter (2005), Upperdog (2009), and the enigmatic All That Matters Is Past (2012), which unfortunately didn’t find the critical praise it was worthy of. Offbeat and strange, it’s easy to see why her cinema has had a difficult time securing an international audience, so we’re hoping her next feature, Framing Mom, breaks out of this cycle. This is about the story of Unn Tove, a TV journalist who marries the wrong man and is unfaithful to him at their own wedding. At the same time, a newborn baby, Rose Marie, is left in a restaurant bathroom. Their lives become intertwined, and 16 years later, Unn Tove and Rose Marie begin a search for the young girl’s biological parents.

Framing Mom
Director: Sara Johnsen // Writer: Sara Johnsen
Their lives become intertwined, and 16 years later, Unn Tove and Rose Marie begin a search for the young girl’s biological parents

There are classic TV shows that are products of their time and then there are others that are simply timeless, and while normally a sitcom can be easily dated by a simpler, kinder sense of humor (especially in a modern era where cruder, ruder elements are common) occasionally it can be so well written that the jokes are just as funny 50 years later. The latter case applies to The Dick Van Dyke Show throughout its entire run of five seasons. It was witty from start to finish and its stellar cast of Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Morey Amsterdam, and Rose Marie gave it some of the best comic timing ever. The fourth season saw the show at the top of its game with stories that have long since been imitated countless times but never duplicated with such hilarity.

Countrypolitan singer-guitarist Slim Whitman has died, just six months short of his 90th birthday. A Florida-born discovery of Colonel Tom Parker’s, Whitman signed with RCA Records in 1948. In 1950, he became a regular attraction on the legendary radio show Louisiana Hayride and, later, the Grand Ole Opry. A yodeling crooner who radiated stability and self-assurance, in contrast to the wild men and tragic figures of hardcore country, Whitman had his greatest success with country-flavored pop songs such as “Indian Love Call” (1951) and “Rose Marie.” The latter hit number one on the U.K. pop charts in ...

Miami — Country singer Slim Whitman, the high-pitched yodeler who sold millions of records through ever-present TV ads in the 1980s and 1990s and whose song saved the world in the film comedy "Mars Attacks!," died Wednesday at a Florida hospital. He was 90.
Whitman died of heart failure at Orange Park Medical Center, his son-in-law Roy Beagle said.
Whitman's tenor falsetto and ebony mustache and sideburns became global trademarks – and an inspiration for countless jokes – thanks to the TV commercials that pitched his records.
But he was a serious musical influence on early rock, and in the British Isles, he was known as a pioneer of country music for popularizing the style there. Whitman also encouraged a teen Elvis Presley when he was the headliner on the bill and the young singer was making his professional debut.

The Dick Van Dyke Show, “The Sick Boy and the Sitter”
Written by Carl Reiner
Directed by Sheldon Leonard
Aired on October 3rd, 1961 on CBS
The Dick Van Dyke Show is one of the most enduring sitcoms of television history. While most series fall from recognition shortly after their finales, it remains a staple of Best Comedy lists to this day. The premise is very straightforward- Dick Van Dyke stars as Rob Petrie, a comedy writer at the fictional The Alan Brady Show. He’s married to Laura, played by Mary Tyler Moore, and the two have a son, Ritchie, and live in New Rochelle. We follow Rob at home and at work, where he often shares scenes with fellow writers Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam) and Sally Rogers (Rose Marie) and occasionally with their straight-man producer, Mel Cooley, played by Richard Deacon.

What happened to the good old fashioned sitcoms that used to have stellar one-liners? Today's takes on that classic formula, like Mike & Molly or Two and a Half Men, all feel like carbon copies recycling jokes originally used in better shows. Yet, when you go back and watch classic episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show the comedy feels comparatively fresh and vibrant, firing five jokes a minute with a cast that squeezes the greatest potential from each setup. What got lost in the mix over the last 50 years? Whatever it was, it's been preserved in its entirety in The Dick Van Dyke Show with its stellar cast of Dick Van Dyke himself, Mary Tyler Moore, Rose Marie, and Morey Amsterdam, and writing that's a seamless blend of verbal and slapstick (mostly in Van Dyke's facial expressions and exaggerated body language) comedy.

Madrid — Renowned Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes, a composer and bandleader who recorded with Nat "King" Cole, was musical director at Havana's legendary Tropicana Club and a key participant in the golden age of Cuban music, has died in Sweden at age 94.
The news of his death was confirmed by Cindy Byram, the agent of Valdes' son Chucho Valdes, who is a well-known musician in his own right. A cause of death was not given.
The senior Valdes studied piano and later taught it to Chucho (Jesus Dionisio Valdes), who went on to become a founding member of the internationally acclaimed Cuban-based jazz band Irakere.
The father began playing accompaniments at Havana's famous night clubs in the 1940s. He then worked with singer Rita Montaner as her pianist and arranger from 1948 to 1957, when she was the lead cabaret act at the Tropicana.

Actress Joan Taylor, best remembered for two sci-fi / horror B movies of the late 1950s, died March 4 in Santa Monica, in Los Angeles County. Taylor was 82. According to various sources, Taylor was born Rose Marie Emma in Geneva, Illinois, on August 18, 1929. She was the daughter of Austrian vaudeville player Amelia Berky and an Italian-born immigrant who later became a Hollywood prop man. Curiously, last Friday night I watched for the first time the 1957 Columbia release 20 Million Miles to Earth. Though wasted in a non-role in this King Kong rip-off with stop-motion animation by Ray Harryhausen, Taylor looked quite pretty (as an Italian) whether angry at leading man William Hopper (son of gossip columnist Hedda Hopper) or screaming at the ballooning Martian creature. I guess it says something about her screen presence that I was rooting for the Martian Monster to gobble up the film's director (Nathan Juran), writers (Robert Creighton Williams...
