In the last 10 years, “There’s Something Wrong with the Children” director Roxanne Benjamin has established herself as a vital new voice in independent horror on both the producing (the “V/H/S” anthology films) and directing fronts, while also pursuing a parallel career as an episodic television gun-for-hire on shows like “Riverdale,” “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin,” and “Nancy Drew.” “It’s like having two different careers that just happen to overlap,” she told IndieWire of her dual life as an indie auteur and network TV journeyman. “In one you’re the architect and in the other you’re the contractor.”
Yet Benjamin has found that trying on different directorial personalities in an effort to mimic the preexisting styles of various television programs has informed her work in features. “Each show has a style and set of rules, so you’re really just putting on somebody else’s clothes for a couple...

There’s Something Wrong with the Children opens to the bombastically ominous strains of The Sisters of Mercy’s “More” playing over tinted footage of children running and a storm rolling in. After some brief, inconsequential dialogue the film’s title flashes on the screen in bright green letters. It’s a wonderfully retro note to start things off on.
Ben and Margaret are on vacation with their friends Ellie, Thomas and their kids Spencer (David Mattle; Life & Beth) and Lucy.
A hike in the woods reveals the remains of a building not on the map, and exploring the building reveals a seemingly bottomless pit that the children insist has a light glowing in it. That should be their cue to pack the cars and go home,...

If Covid doesn’t kill you, the tall guy with the hunting knife probably will. That’s the hook in John Hyams’ “Sick,” which makes clever work of an ongoing health scare, and especially the way that college-age kids dealt with CDC restrictions — often by ignoring them — adding a few disposable undergrads to the pandemic’s otherwise tragic body count. That’s what’s so compelling about this quick-turnaround collaboration from Kevin Williamson and “Scream” assistant-turned-co-writer Katelyn Crabb, now streaming on Peacock: You’re never really sure whether you should be rooting for its inconsiderate young coeds or counting on a slasher to teach them a lesson.
Playing on our lingering paranoia, “Sick” kicks off with a scene that recalls the early, uncertain days of the pandemic. A college kid named Tyler (Joel Courtney) wanders an apocalyptic-looking grocery store whose shelves have been emptied of Tp and other essentials. He...

It’s been strange to discover how many filmmakers have willfully ignored the fact that, for a couple of very recent years, the planet Earth was completely consumed by a deadly pandemic that killed millions of people, tanked our economies, transformed social interactions, and probably changed life as we know it forever. Most movies and TV shows are happy to pretend those years never happened, and have never interrupted the flow of their characters’ lives. But horror filmmakers — who work fast, work cheap, and have carte blanche to confront our most uncomfortable anxieties — are the exception.
The “Lockdown Wave” of filmmaking, with productions that took place in the midst of the pandemic or its immediate aftermath, has already yielded fascinating results. Films like “Host” nimbly explored themes of shared cultural responsibility, while Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s “Something in the Dirt” tackled broader existential dilemmas. It seems only fitting that Kevin Williamson,...

After a decade of The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, and The Walking Dead: World Beyond, I should be over the classic version of zombies. Most of the zombie media that have emerged from The Walking Dead’s long shadow have been things that have broken the mold. Anna and the Apocalypse is a coming-of-age musical. One Cut of the Dead is a heartwarming, hilarious take on what goes on behind the scenes of a movie set. Train to Busan adds claustrophobia to zombie proceedings, giving the survivors nowhere to run. Z Nation carved a niche for itself by having an actual sense of humor unlike the series it inspires.
So what makes Black Summer (which comes from the folks behind Z Nation) stand out as one of the best streaming horror shows? Like The Walking Dead, the human characters of Black Summer are both capable and dangerous in their own respects.

Last week, Kevin Smith released Jay and Silent Bob Reboot as a two night special through Fathom Events. The movie is a lot of fun and very much in the wheelhouse of Smith fans. To celebrate that release, as well as the upcoming further unveiling of the film through a Roadshow style release, complete with Smith Q&a’s after, I’m going to be updating my list of the filmmaker’s best work to date. This flick is another quality effort of his, though really just meant for the fans, as well as Smith himself. Still, if you get a chance to check it out, it’s well worth your time… The film is, obviously, a sequel to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, while being a bit of a rebook/remake as well. In fact, it’s also a satire of how Hollywood reboots all intellectual property these days.

Yesterday afternoon, right as Comic-Con was getting underway for 2019, Kevin Smith went on Twitter and showcased what he’s been working on since his heart attack. Yes, we now finally have our first look at his return to the cinematic universe he created, with Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Not only that, it’s a Red Band, with plenty of foul language intact. Fans of the filmmaker can rejoice at Smith playing with his View Askew toys once again, and for this sequel, he’s bringing in some big guns. You can see the Trailer for yourself at the end of this post, but of course, we have to discuss it a bit first… The movie is, obviously, a sequel to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, as well as a satire of how Hollywood reboots all intellectual property these days. The synopsis, brief as it may be, comes from...

The hot rods competing in Julian Slink’s Blood Drive may be fueled by the red stuff, but Syfy’s freshman drama is powered by all manner of envelope-pushing perversity.
Airing Wednesdays at 10/9c (and not a minute earlier, whew), the grindhouse-style series stars Christina Ochoa (of The CW’s upcoming Valor) and Alan Ritchson (Blue Mountain State) as Grace D’Argento and Arthur Bailey, an experienced (and ribald) racer and the do-right lawman she is reluctantly partnered with on the titular gauntlet. If you did a double-take when you first heard that Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez were in a movie together, or raised your eyebrows when you then heard that the Getaway movie wasn’t about something involving angst-riddled teens and heart-wrenching drama… and, if you thought a selection of new images would clue you in to something beyond cars, explosions, and moody pictures of Hawke and Gomez very near each other… well, frankly, I’ve lost my train of thought.
However it all works out, this Getaway movie looks fantastic. There’s probably a really good reason that Gomez’ character has a custom Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake for Hawke to steal, but… no, I’m kidding.
Still, it may be fun. Have a look at some hot new images, and get ready to choke on everything you ever said about Selena Gomez’ acting ability.

Ethan Hawke has probably been having one of the best few weeks of his career. His latest collaboration with Richard Linklater and Julie Delpy, Before Midnight, has opened to rave reviews, he’s got a thriller called The Purge set to hit theaters while riding the momentum of the inexplicable buzz that’s been generated by its ad campaign, and now a trailer has debuted for his new movie, where he gets to live out his lifelong dream of working alongside Selena Gomez. Okay, Gomez hasn’t been acting for all that long, so maybe lifelong dream is overstating it, but she’s pretty popular with the young folk, so maybe Hawke’s kids are at least pretty excited to see their dad working alongside their idol? And if you’re a fan of movies where cars get driven really fast for no reason, things explode, and Jon Voight speaks with a silly accent, then...

Talk about an unlikely duo.
Ethan Hawke, who is on a bit of a hot streak lately with Before Midnight and Purge opening this weekend, stars as an ex-race car driver Brent Magna who finds himself in the middle of a weird kidnapping plot that involves being ordered to drive a very fast car or else his wife gets killed and Selena Gomez is the young would-be carjacker who picked the wrong car. Or did she?
Getaway, directed by Yaron Levy and Courtney Solomon, is an action thriller with a modern twist: a set of cameras mounted in the car means that the man who is pulling the strings does his business from a remote location and Brent can't escape his watchful eye.
Strap yourself in and watch the first trailer for Getaway, hitting theatres August 30 and also part of our Beyond the Blockbuster Summer Movie Preview.

Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke star in Getaway, releasing on August 30, and with The Purge starring Hawke as well hitting theaters this weekend, Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the upcoming thriller. The film finds Hawke playing Brent Magna, a burned out race car driver thrust into a do-or-die mission behind the wheel when his wife is kidnapped. With Brent's only ally being a young hacker (Gomez), his one hope of saving his wife is to follow the orders of the mysterious voice (Jon Voight) who's watching his every move through cameras mounted on the car Brent's driving. Check out the trailer below. The film is directed by Courtney Solomon and Yaron Levy and for Levy it's his directorial debut while Solomon was responsible for 2000's Dungeons & Dragons, after which he produced a whole slew of direct-to-video content as well as Sylvester Stallone's recent dud, Bullet to the Head.

Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke lead a new thriller from the director of Dungeons And Dragons. First trailer here...
Set for release in the Us at the end of August, and sneaking into UK cinemas in October, is the upcoming thriller Getaway. The film stars Ethan Hawke, and it's also the latest film project for Selena Gomez, coming to this one after her bold choice to make Spring Breakers.
Directed by Courtney Solomon (Dungeons And Dragons) and Yaron Levy, the premise of Getaway is that Ethan Hawke plays a racing car driver, whose wife is kidnapped. To help try and find her, he 'borrows' a vehicle that just happens to belong to Selena Gomez's character. The race against time is thus on.
Jon Voight and Bruce Payne co-star in this one, and we've got a trailer for you here, with the poster underneath.

While the festival and critical success of Richard Linklater.s Before Midnight was hardly a surprise, the positive reactions to Harmony Korine.s grime-and-glitz drama Spring Breakers was a definite curveball, giving the director his first sorta-mainstream success, and reminding everyone that Selena Gomez is a woman now. And far, far away from that particular brand of cinematic prowess lives the above trailer (via Apple) for Getaway, a kidnapping crime thriller directed by Courtney Solomon (An American Haunting) and Yaron Levy, which stars Ethan Hawke and Gomez and a gravel-throated Jon Voigt. If drinking games are your thing, take a shot for every other movie this derivative plotline reminds you of. Hawke plays a man whose wife (Rebecca Budig) has been taken by a mysterious villain. The hero has to speed around town doing whatever the guy says in order to make sure his wife stays alive (they actually make...

"I want my wife back!" Warner Bros has debuted a trailer for Getaway, an action-thriller with one of those crazy cinematic concepts. Ethan Hawke (popping up a lot recently in Before Midnight, Sinister, The Purge) plays Brent, a getaway driver told he must follow directions from a mysterious guy on the phone to save his wife. Along the way he picks up a mischievous girl, played by Selena Gomez, and some other weird things happen. Basically, it's Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez stuck in a car, and kind of a Fast and Furious prequel, too. This doesn't look that great, but I'm still intrigued to find out what's really happening. Gomez, Hudgens, Franco, guns and bikinis: Outstanding domestic debut Harmony Korine's crime flick Spring Breakers currently boasts the year's highest per-theater average. That's no small feat. As per final Us/Canada weekend box-office numbers published on the web site Box Office Mojo, this past weekend (March 15-17) the film raked in $263,002 at three locations (two in New York City, one in Los Angeles). That's down slightly from the studio's $270,000 estimate released on Sunday, but still enough to average a fantastic $87,667 per venue. (Pictured above: Gomez [scroll down for more on Gomez's box-office performance to date; pictured below: bad girls in bikinis in court.) One of the highest opening weekend per-theater averages ever Spring Breakers was down one spot on Box Office Mojo's post-1982 chart of opening-weekend per-theater averages. At #23, the movie is sandwiched between two Academy Award winners: Tom Hooper / Colin Firth's The King's Speech with $88,863 and Steven Spielberg / Daniel Day-Lewis' Lincoln with $85,846. Once inflation is factored in, Spring Breakers drops to the 52nd spot (down nine spots from yesterday's estimates), landing between Daniel Myrick...

When it comes to the fourth instalment of a largely straight to DVD franchise starring Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, you can usually be sure of a few things. The formula won’t be changed much, there will be the pre-requisite amount of violence and grunting and both of them will just show up rather than give a performance. What you wouldn’t expect from the fourth in such a series, is for them to rip up the rulebook completely and create a noir-ish, trippy riff on Apocalypse Now that manages to be one of the best action films for a while but that’s what they did.
After the better than expected Universal Soldier: Regeneration, Day of Reckoning picks up sometime afterwards with resurrected Vietnam soldier Luc Deveraux (Van Damme) having clearly gone nuts from what he went through and indulging in a little murder and home...

We’re being chased in a car the entire movie – that’s exactly what Selena Gomez had to say about her upcoming Getaway movie a few months ago, and today we’re here to give you the proof – the first official photo from the action thriller which comes from directors Courtney Solomon and Yaron Levy, and beside Gomez, also stars Ethan Hawke as the male lead!
Solomon and Levy direct the whole thing from a script written by Gregg Maxwell Parker and Sean Finegan, and just in case you still have some doubts about this project we’re here to remind you that this film is actually an original story, and has nothing to do with the 1972 film The Getaway which starred Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw.

You have to give director John Hyams credit for not just giving audiences the same old thing with Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning. Those expecting a fun and action-packed thrill ride are going to be in for a major shock as this entry in the long-running franchise functions more as a horror movie than anything else. But despite the fact that the filmmakers are taking this series in a different direction, it doesn’t change the fact that the film is slow and dull in several spots, so much so that in the end, it doesn’t work as a whole.
Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren return as our favorite Universal Soldiers: Luc Deveraux and Andrew Scott, and they have since formed the Unisol Church of Eventualism, which has them taking in wayward soldiers like themselves whom the government has been secretly operating as remote-controlled sleeper agents. Huh? We can't even remember hearing about this, but Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez are making a movie together called "Getaway." This is what they look like in it. The movie is coming from co-directors Courtney Solomon ("Dungeons & Dragons," "An American Haunting") and Yaron Levy (making his debut) and it's penned by Sean Finegan and Gregg Maxwell Parker, neither of whom have any producing credits to their name. So what is it about? Well, according to OnTheFlix, "the movie is about a retired race car driver who tries to track down his kidnapped wife with the help of a younger female computer hacker." What? That doesn't make anything clearer, and just raises more questions. Dark Castle is producing, and Warner Bros. is already planning to dump it at the end of next summer on August 30th. Paychecks for all involved, we suppose. [Kinopoisk]...
