Martin Campbell's "GoldenEye" is one of the most important films in the history of the James Bond franchise. The series had been mothballed for six years after the box office disappointment of "License to Kill" in 1989, which brought the two-film Timothy Dalton era to a premature halt. While producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson searched for Dalton's successor, the world went through a rapid metamorphosis. The Berlin Wall fell in 1989, precipitating the end of the Warsaw Pact and the breakup of the Soviet Union. The Cold War was over. The West won. Where did Bond fit in this new world order?
Old hostilities die hard, especially in spy fiction, so it's no surprise that screenwriters Jeffrey Caine and Bruce Feirstein (working from a story by Michael France) concocted a Russia-centric adventure revolving around an electromagnetic weapon that would plunge the Cold War victors into a global financial crisis.

Listen, I know when you see a headline like "The Two Problems That Cost Mel Gibson His Shot At Playing James Bond," the first thought to cross your mind is going to be, "I bet I know at least one of the problems." However, the time period in which Gibson was in the running to play 007 was well before the many problematic controversies the actor has weathered, so it's not that, smarty-pants.
His name was being floated between the Timothy Dalton years and Pierce Brosnan's run, and it made a kind of sense. He was a huge action star, radiated charisma in everything he was doing, and was coming off of his award-winning directorial outing "Braveheart." Let's also not forget that despite his on-point American accent, Gibson is Australian, which puts him squarely in the eligible category for Bond. George Lazenby previously played everybody's favorite secret agent, albeit for only one movie,...

To state a very true, indisputable thing right up front: Pierce Brosnan is the best James Bond (in my opinion). What's more, Martin Campbell's 1995 entry "GoldenEye" is one of the three best of all the James Bond movies, and Roger Spottiswoode's 1997 film "Tomorrow Never Dies" is nothing to sneeze at. Indeed, watching "Tomorrow Never Died" in 2023 posits an eerily accurate trajectory of the future computer technology, and its Steve Jobs-like villain Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) easily predicts the culture of I'm-always-right tech-bros we currently find ourselves mired in.
Briefly, the villain in "Tomorrow Never Dies" seeks to digitally control the flow of information, making him a soft-spoken, cyber-jacked version of William Randolph Hearst. He aims to start a war between China and England, hoping to secure broadcasting rights in China for the rest of his life. In 1997, such a plot seemed both hopelessly nerdy and legitimately terrifying.

The history of any major movie franchise is littered with “sliding door” moments – decisions that changed the shape and direction of the films that followed – and James Bond is no exception. Adam West turning down the chance to play 007 paved the way for Roger Moore to take the role. The fateful decision to equip Bond with an invisible car in Die Another Day, meanwhile, contributed to producers pushing for a more gritty and grounded 007 in Casino Royale.
For Timothy Dalton, that sliding door moment came as a result of the corporate litigation between producer Cubby Broccoli’s company, Danjaq, LLC, which owned the exclusive rights to produce feature films and television series based on the character of Bond, and Italian financier Giancarlo Parretti, then owner of MGM, the parent company of United Artists, which financed and distributed the series.

Amy Tan's iconic exploration of identity, friendship, and womanhood is getting the sequel treatment. In collaboration with Oscar-winning screenwriter Ron Bass, the bestselling author is releasing a sequel to 1993's "The Joy Luck Club," inspired by her 1989 novel of the same name. Like the original movie, the new film - which will also be produced by Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment Group and producer Jeff Kleeman - will tell the multigenerational story of Chinese and Chinese American mothers and daughters as their lives intertwine. Expanding on the source material, the sequel will also see the daughters become mothers and the mothers become grandmothers, adding a new generation of women to the saga.
"Now more than ever it is important to share authentic stories about the Asian-American experience."
"I am thrilled to work with Amy, Ron and Jeff to bring this special film to the screen," Amritraj told Deadline.

Almost 30 years after the original’s 1993 release, a sequel to The Joy Luck Club is on the way. Amy Tan and Ron Bass will write the script, with Jeff Kleeman and Ashok Amritraj of Hyde Park Entertainment Group producing. The original film, directed by Wayne Wang, focuses on the life histories of four East Asian women and their daughters. Through their richly-detailed life experiences, the women pass their knowledge onto a new generation, hoping to shape them into strong and independent individuals. Tamlyn Tomita, Rosalind Chao, Kieu Chinh, Tsai Chin, France Nuyen, Lisa Lu, Ming-Na Wen, and Lauren Tom, who starred in the original, are in talks to reprise their roles for The Joy Luck Club sequel.
The Joy Luck Club is a well-respected film often credited with changing the face of Asian cinema. The heartfelt drama helped launch the career of Ming-Na Wen, the badass you know from Marvel’s Agents of S.

Decades after revolutionizing how we see Asian American women on screen, "The Joy Luck Club" will be meeting up once again. Deadline reports that the 1993 film, originally directed by Wayne Wang, will be getting a sequel that is sure to continue the themes of intergenerational struggles portrayed in the original. Amy Tan, who wrote the original 1989 novel, and Ron Bass will both return as screenwriters. Hyde Park Entertainment Group, headed up by Ashok Amritraj, will handle the majority of producing duties on the project.
"We are excited to be teaming with Hyde Park and ["The Judge" producer] Jeff Kleeman in bringing to life the next generation of these four families so close to our hearts," the duo wrote in a statement provided to Deadline.
Not much is known about the film's story, but what we do know is that it will be a true legacy sequel in every sense of the term.

NBC and Ellen DeGeneres will not be teaming up again for another season of fun and games. “Ellen’s Game of Games,” which has aired on the network for four seasons, has been canceled, Variety has confirmed. This coincides with the conclusion of the comedian’s award-winning daytime talk show, slated to end this upcoming spring with Season 19.
DeGeneres served as host and executive producer of the one-hour alternative series, which included supersized versions of some of the most popular games from “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” The series also features Stephen “tWitch” Boss who, with DeGeneres, oversaw the contestants playing different games over four rounds. The winner of each round advanced to the “Know or Go” stage, and the winner of that round proceeded to “Hot Hands” for a chance to win a $100,000 cash prize.
The move to end the spinoff series isn’t entirely surprising, given that DeGeneres’ current contract ends this year.

Exclusive: Ellen DeGeneres’ game show Ellen’s Game of Games is not coming back to NBC.
Deadline understands that the fourth season of the unscripted primetime series will be its last on the network.
The series launched with an eight-episode order in 2017 and its fourth season, which debuted in October 2020 and ran through May 2021, featured 20 episodes.
The family friendly format had previously been a strong performer for the network – tying for fourth among all primetime entertainment programs on broadcast with kids and ranking as primetime’s number one game show in 2019.
However, last year, the show lost a sizeable portion of its audience.
It comes as The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which airs on a number of NBC-owned affiliate stations, is ending later this spring with its 19th season.

The broadcast network has ordered 10 episodes of the new series that will feature Bell and Shepard as both hosts and competitors. Each episode will see Bell and Shepard be “adopted” into individual families of four to compete in a series of games with a big cash prize up for grabs. “For one of our first dates, I invited Dax over for a game night at my house with a bunch of friends,” Bell said. “He said he fell in love with me there because I was a very tiny person bossing everyone around. Netflix is serving up Dr. Seuss’ classic book “Green Eggs and Ham” with a large helping of traditional animation. The series, created and executive produced by animation veteran Jared Stern, expands the story of the delicacy’s persistent champion Sam I Am and picky eater Guy Am I as they go on a road trip to rescue an endangered creature from a zoo, learning about hope, trust and friendship along the way.
The process of bringing the book to Netflix was a long one, with Stern dedicated to ensuring the production stayed true to the look and spirit of Theodor Geisel’s 1960 story while giving the series a feature-film quality with hand-drawn animation.
“There were four years of actual production. That was intentional, and that’s about normal for the quality of animation that we were aspiring to,” Stern says. “A typical animated film can take close to three to...

Calley had worked with the director on such pictures as 1971's A Clockwork Orange. Now that he was running UA, he wanted to know about a long-rumored project Kubrick was believed to have written for the studio: a biopic of Napoleon, purportedly designed with Jack Nicholson as the French emperor.
