In addition to providing viewers with countless feel-good characters for several decades now, he also just seems like a genuinely nice person. On Nov. 4, the actor sweetly helped a couple get engaged while promoting his new book, Uncommon Type: Some Stories, at the Texas Book Festival in Austin. During the Q&A portion of the evening, Tom joked that he was bored of taking questions from the audience and wanted to ask one himself, according to The Associated Press. Tom then pulled out a piece of paper and said an audience member had a question for his date. Acting as the messenger, Tom said, "Nikki, will you marry me?" The couple then joined Tom onstage...

A fire chief in Northern California lost his home to the wildfires raging through the region while evacuating his neighbors from the blaze as it tore through his Santa Rosa, California, neighborhood.
“He had just gotten his family in the car and watched them leave, then went down the street, knocking on doors, evacuating his neighbors when his home was hit,” Linn Walsh tells People about Mill Valley Fire Chief Tom Welch.
Welch continued working another 14 hours when Walsh, who works as the assistant to Mill Valley’s city manager, finally tracked him down on the phone late Monday night.

The Bold and the Beautiful fans know things never go well, but as the long holiday weekend comes to an end and people have to wait a little longer to figure out what is going on, they’re just more confused. Luann and Tom D’Agostino‘s marriage is over before the pair could even celebrate their paper anniversary.
The Real Housewives of New York City star announced Thursday that she and Tom are divorcing just seven months after they said “I do” in a glamorous, New Year’s Eve wedding in Palm Beach (which is not West Palm Beach).
Though sudden, the split isn’t likely a surprise to Rhony viewers, who’ve spent most of season 9 watching Luann’s cast mates question the relationship. Then, just last month, the couple made headlines following a public spat, with Luann telling People at the time,...

You should already recognize Sofia Boutella. If you don’t, it doesn’t mean she hasn’t already wowed you on screen.
A few years ago the Algeria-born beauty parlayed her experience as a gymnast (she moved to France at age 10 and joined its national rhythmic gymnastics team) and hip-hop dancer (she’s worked with Madonna and Rihanna) into a breathtaking turn as Gazelle, Samuel L. Jackson’s balletic hench-woman with blades for feet in 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service. Two years later she stole scenes as Star Trek Beyond’s Jaylah, an alien who helps the Enterprise crew escape a dangerous planet, but her performance was hidden behind a thick layer of prosthetic makeup.

He might be so upset with her for what she did, and he might be unwilling to speak to her about a relationship after all this, but he’s not going to let her life be ruined because of it. He’s going to give her the money she needs to keep her business going. He’s not going to know how to handle this, but he knows what he has to do for the woman he knows he loves. The truth will set you free.
Scottie knew what was happening but there was nothing she could do on The Blacklist: Redemption Season 1 Episode 8 as she became a victim of Howard's ultimate plan.
It turns out that Howard played everyone.
There were plenty of people who guessed that Howard would end up being the bad guy in the end. And they were right.
It was a twist, but it wasn't necessarily a surprise.
More surprising was Trevor's role in it all.
When Kat went to her car and opened her computer, I thought for sure it would be revealed that she was the one working with Howard. Instead she was the one who figured out the real bad guy behind scenes.
Trevor was working for Howard and relaying everything Scottie spilled to him during their sessions to Howard.
We knew there had to be a reason for Trevor than just his good looks and skills.

So Howard isn't crazy after all.
Tom almost let the cat out of the bag on The Blacklist: Redemption Season 1 Episode 5, but seeing the comic book peeking out of Scottie's magazine rack stopped him cold.
Howard even admitted early in the hour that he must sound crazy, handing Tom a piece of paper and talking about secret messages.
Then later when he talked about the comic book, that was all Tom needed to hear to realize that Howard really was a nutcase.
So he thought.
He finally had Scottie alone without any chance of interruption and he was going to tell her who he was when he caught the comic book out of the corner of his eye.
Imagine his surprise when he saw that the comic book actually existed. Lucky for him he was able to backtrack and say he wanted to talk about Liz and Agnes. (It's been...

If there is one thing we learned tonight on Salem Season 3 Episode 5, the dark lord has a serious case of an Oedipus complex. Poor Mary!
As if things couldn't get any worse for our Queen Witch, she has to deal with this bombshell by her "somewhat-dead-totally-evil" son. This offer isn't exactly surprising in hindsight — the dark lord has been hinting at his love for her for a while. Still, his choice of Mary must stem from a mysterious place.
Dark Lord: And to fulfill the promise of your existence.
Mary: I do not understand.
Dark Lord: My father took on a suit of flesh, he required two Marys -- one to birth him and one to love him. But I only need one Mary. You...my mother...and my bride.

God, this show really knows how to pull the rug from under you.
On How to Get Away with Murder Season 3 Episode 7, there were a lot of reveals, but the most twisted one of all was that Wes was giving anonymous information to take Annalise down.
It was bound to happen at some point, but I just didn't see it playing out quite like this and so soon. The wheels were obviously turning in Annalise's mind as she was trying to figure out who could have been trying to get her sent away.
Now, this show is well-known for twists that send your jaw to the floor, so let me present my theory to you: Annalise and Wes have made some sort of deal to get Wes away with the part he has played in Annalises schemes over the past two years.
After the Keating 5 told Annalise what she was really like,...

One would assume that Joshua Marston’s Complete Unknown might elicit feelings of invigorated freedom – Assume, I repeat. At some point in our lives, we’ve all dreamt about starting over. Hitting the “Eject” button amidst our daily routine, and trying out a different lifestyle that could have been. This is the crux of Marston’s story (co-written by Julian Sheppard), but whatever message is trying to be conveyed (Being happy with one life? Not being afraid to start over somewhere else?) desperately gets lost in translation. Like, Sylvester Stallone trying to communicate with a Japanese businessman. Movies are supposed to make you feel something, but unfortunately, my screening ended with a sense of frustration, confusion and zero sympathetic charms – a deadly trifecta for any indie drama.

Since its setting is a wasteland ruin of our own civilization, it’s a good thing that most of the characters in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – a more entertaining than usual Ya lit adaptation – are either a teenager, or suffering from memory loss. Otherwise, anyone who could remember Maze Runner’s world pre-catastrophe would spend most of The Scorch Trials saying things like, “Cool, we’re in the hangar bay from Pacific Rim!,” and “Don’t alert those I Am Legend zombies!,” or “Holy crap, we’re in an exact recreation of the best scene from The Lost World…but there’s also a zombie!”

That, folks, was Season 2 Scandal levels of scandalaciousness.
I said here last week that the show seemed to be building momentum, to be about “something” as it is during its most entertaining, can’t-look-away times. And this week’s episode, which featured a provocative First Family drama, reignited the “Olitz” spark, gave us a Full Throttle Olivia Pope and, for good measure, dropped a humdinger of a final twist, was operating at high velocity.

Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise's summer sci-fi movie about a reluctant soldier who's cursed with the gift of reliving the same day that he's killed by aliens over and over again—until he navigates through battle safely—wasn't the blockbuster that it might have been. It inched past $100 million in the U.S. and grossed a total of $369 million, but critics heaped praise on Cruise, whose Major William Cage reminded some of A Few Good Men's lackadaisical Daniel Kaffee, and Emily Blunt, who played a heroic supersoldier with a sixth sense for slaughtering the spidery aliens that invaded Earth.

You can't really blame Tom Daley. Most 19-year-olds who were dubbed national treasures and feted on television would end up being big-headed idiots. Tom is nothing like that; he's always come across as a very pleasant and humble young man (even if he did agree to take part in Splash. Twice.) So when a producer with an eye for a story offered him and his best friend a six-week backpacking holiday around the world - well, it's hard to say that any teenage boy would turn that down.
So no blame lies with Tom for Tom Daley Goes Global. I'm sure he and his bestie Sophie - who, too, sounds like a very nice young woman - had an amazing time on their trip. It's just that those experiences aren't exactly particularly enjoyable for us lot sitting at home watching on ITV2.

I caught Roman Polanski's Venus in Fur at last year's Cannes Film Festival (read my review here) and Sundance Selects is finally bringing the comedy based on the play by David Ives to theaters on June 20. Starring Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Seigner, the story itself is quite small as it centers on an actress' attempts to convince a director she's perfect for a role in his upcoming production. There is, however, more to it than just that. Here's what I wrote in my review: Roman Polanski's Venus in Fur hit me like a breath of fresh air on the morning of my eleventh and final day of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Opening with a sequence I'd more associate with a Tim Burton and Danny Elfman collaboration, we're greeted by a wicked rain storm and an upbeat, gothic score from Alexandre Desplat as the camera splits a tree-lined street.

Against all odds, Tom has managed to charm out-of-his-league Maya so far on "Mixology." Despite the fact that he's cried in front of her, talked about his ex-fiance dumping him, and messed up in so many ways, somehow she's still interested in the shy, sweet guy that's so unlike any other guy she's ever dated. Could Tom and Maya get a happy ending by the end of this season?
Maybe, but we'll have to wait to find out. "Throughout the season you'll see Tom gain confidence and learn to trust himself. And then hopefully he comes out on top," series star Blake Lee tells Zap2it.
Unfortunately, all of Tom's hard work charming Maya will hit a huge speed bump in this Wednesday's (April 2) episode, "Tom & Maya Part II," when Tom's ex-fiance Laura shows up to the bar.

Unfortunately, all of Tom's hard work charming Maya will hit a huge speed bump in this Wednesday's (April 2) episode, "Tom & Maya Part II," when Tom's ex-fiance Laura shows up to the bar.
"I think the audience will be surprised," Lee says. "He hasn't really...

Tom at the Farm (Original title: Tom à la ferme)
Written and directed by Xavier Dolan
Canada, 2013
Since 2009’s I Killed My Mother, Xavier Dolan has been one of the darlings of Québec cinema. More so than Podz, Éric Canuel, Denis Côté, and rivaled probably only by Denis Villeneuve, the release of a new Dolan film brings with it mouth-watering anticipation. His movies straddle the line between the mainstream and the arthouse, glittering with cool cinematography tricks and crowd-pleasing soundtracks, but anchored by stories and characters not so popular amongst the general public. Each project earns considerable critical reputations, a lustre rarely matched by box office receipts. His latest, Tom at the Farm, despite having the blueprint of a more accessible film, continues his odyssey as an idiosyncratic filmmaker.
Tom (Dolan), a leather-jacket-wearing, bleach-blonde-haired Montrealer, drives to a small town in the provincial country to attend his friend Guillaume’s funeral.

"The Blacklist" sort of led us to believe last week that this week would have the Tom-Lizzie confrontation. Instead, it offered up a couple emotional punches to the gut and teased the confrontation (possibly) happening next week.
Case of the Week
The Blacklister this week is Mako Tanida, a Japanese Yukuza boss who is taking out the FBI agents who took him down (and in the process, killed his younger brother). Also, it turns out one of the agents is masquerading as the younger brother now, and he's the main target.
But in the course of the revenge, not only does Tanida make the agents kill themselves in rather gruesome ways, but he shoots Agent Ressler's pregnant girlfriend. Audrey dies in his arms in the middle of the street and it's very sad, though just for drama's sake it's a shame we didn't know her better as a character becuase...

Philip Hinchcliffe, Doctor Who producer 1974 - 1977, chats about Tom Baker, villains, visual FX, companions, the 2005 revival, & more…
A week or so ago in a Brighton basement, Den of Geek attended a fun evening organised by the - aptly named, in this instance - arts and entertainment group, Space.
A regular Brighton-based event, Space regularly welcomes luminaries from the creative world to talk to its intimate group. Past guests have been from the world of film and television (Mark Gatiss, Toby Whithouse, Nicholas Roeg, David Morrissey, The Dark Knight trilogy and Inception visual effects artist Paul Franklin, Star Wars, Superman and Raiders of the Lost Ark production designer Norman Reynolds), literature (Ian Rankin), and music (William Orbit, Skunk Anansie’s Skin, Goldie).
There are two Q&As per event, and opportunities to ask questions in an informal, friendly and geeky atmosphere, making the nights well worth the £8 advance ticket price.

The eyes of the world were on Coney Island on Thursday for the annual gorge Olympics known as the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, where Joey "Jaws" Chestnut, the LeBron James of the competitive eating world, won for the seventh consecutive year -- and shattered a world record while he was at it -- by consuming 69 hotdogs and buns in 10 minutes. In the women's division of the sport (where "sport" is defined as any competitive activity deemed worthy of coverage on Espn), Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas just narrowly eked out a victory by gobbling up 36 three-quarter-length

Falling Skies season 3 picked up seven months after Cochise - a leader from the alien race Volm - landed in Charleston. While the show's world hasn't changed, the time jump introduced in "On Thin Ice" allowed for advancement and a bigger picture of the story.
Tom Mason has been elected President and leader of Charleston. However, Tom just wants to be known as Tom and not called President. He refuses to sit in an office to lead and instead continues to go out on missions and fight against the aliens. He's remained true to himself and the cause.
The conflict with his leadership comes with his trust in Cochise and the Volms as allies. Tom trusted Red Eye and now has put his faith in the assistance of the Volm. He has attributed their victories and the shift in the war to their alliance. Tom is a man of history and isn't naive.

There is a popular saying that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” This classic strategy is implemented with some misgivings as a new alien race arrives on Earth insisting that they may be able to help the 2nd Mass and the other human survivors in defeating the Espheni occupying the planet. In a recent press conference call, star Noah Wyle provided insight into Tom Mason’s difficult decision to align with the Volm and the repercussions throughout the 3rd season of Falling Skies.
Why do you think Tom is so easily accepting of the new alien race?
Noah: Well, Tom’s not a stupid man, and I know that he’s got the same questions and misgivings that everybody else does. But there’s a couple of things that he has great confidence about. The first is that on a gut level, he just sort of trusts this...

Roman Polanski's Venus in Fur hit me like a breath of fresh air on the morning of my eleventh and final day of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Opening with a sequence I'd more associate with a Tim Burton and Danny Elfman collaboration, we're greeted by a wicked rain storm and an upbeat, gothic score from Alexandre Desplat as the camera splits a tree-lined street. The perspective veers right to reveal a rundown Paris theatre. The camera comes to rest in front of the theatre doors, which eventually swing open to reveal Thomas (Mathieu Amalric), a stage writer working to put together his directorial debut, but after seeing 30 actresses he still can't seem to find the right one to play the lead role, Vanda. He turns and we learn it wasn't just a camera we were tracking into the theater, but a sopping wet actress (Emmanuelle Seigner), late for her audition.

After last week's "Mad Men" stumbled a bit by grappling with a major historical event, "For Immediate Release" rebounded in high style to deliver the season's most thrilling, entertaining and finest hour yet.
Opening with the possibility of Scdp going public and ending with a merger between Scdp and Ted Chaough's Cgc -- yes, folks, Peggy and Don are co-workers again -- this was a hour packed with bombshells (Pete catches his stepfather at a whorehouse!), explosions (Joan's fury over Don dumping the Jaguar account) and killer one-liners (did we mention Julia Ormond's return as Megan's mother?).
There was so much hot-blooded ad agency action, Don didn't even have time to reflect on how miserable he is ... on the inside.
[Note: In the spirit of showrunner Matthew Weiner declaring that this season is about Dr. Arnold Rosen telling Don, "People will do anything to alleviate their anxiety," we're tracking the happiness of key characters week by week.]
The "Mad Men" happiness index, week five:
1) Don (last week, #8): From the very start, "Mad Men" has been a show driven by Don Draper's unhappiness, but if there's...

Enjoying some Big Apple sunshine, Sienna Miller and Tom Sturridge took a stroll with their daughter in the West Village on Saturday (March 9).
Hand-in-hand, the proud parents cooed over little Marlowe, who was nestled snugly in a carrier strapped to her dad's chest as the trio toured the neighborhood.
Ms. Miller has been busy recently filming the drama "Foxcatcher" alongside Channing Tatum and Steve Carell.
Meanwhile, Tom just finished shooting his next flick, the UK's "Effie," about the mysterious relationship between Victorian art critic John Ruskin and his teenage bride Effie Gray.

Which way does Tom Riley's Leonardo DaVinci swing in DaVinci's Demons.
Anyone who is concerned that the new Starz series, DaVinci's Demons, is going to 'straight-wash' not only the content but Leonardo DaVinci's homosexuality can rest easier knowing that the show will go there...the next question being, of course, how far.
If the opening episode is any indication, though, we'll see more than a few daliances between men and, also in the pilot, we see DaVinci (played by the striking Tom Riley) refer to a young man (who his friends call 'a hustler') in a way that opens the door for the idea that the artist does not walk an exclusively straight line.
With the DaVinci's Demons cast and Executive Producer David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight films and the upcoming Man Of Steel) present at this past weekend's Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, it was the...

Tom Hanks has a problem with his dressing room.
The two-time Oscar winner and generally agreed-upon national treasure has just arrived backstage at UCLA's Freud Playhouse, dragging a duffel bag in each hand with his wife, Rita Wilson, trailing behind. 30 Rock is airing on Wednesday night this week. How's that for a twist?
Happy Halloween, everybody!
News
There was definite drama among Community fans yesterday after news spread that the fourth season would debut on Canadian TV on November 9, while U.S. viewers had no premiere date to anticipate. Gawker went on to speculate that this might kill the show as fans would torrent the Canadian episodes and not watch the show on NBC, sinking the ratings. However, the announcement disappeared from CityTV's website and NBC announced that Community will return in February, so fans stopped feeling like they had been told that the dress of life doesn't come in their size.
Speaking of NBC's midseason schedule the Peacock network is taking a risk by putting Revolution on hiatus until March (so that it can be accompanied by the fourth season of The Voice). The common wisdom says that audiences...

Grey’s Anatomy returned with "Love the One You're With," an episode that made you question when it’s oky to settle and when it’s not. For one thing, viewers did not have to settle for this episode.
This hour of television was up to the beloved Ga standards.
Welcome Back, April! Catching everyone off guard, Kepner returned to Seattle. The tension between her and Jackson was radiating off the screen. Who can blame her? As soon as Avery took his shirt off, he had her. The hour wasn’t even over before the two were back at it. This is a couple for whom viewers can root. April has grown since her character was introduced. She’s no longer much less annoying than she used to be, and she’s honest. A girl with principles is a girl you want to do well. Too bad their secret is out!

“We always say I was more famous than she thought I was, and less famous than I thought I was.”

David Beckham, Michael Jordan, Pelé … Team Gb's young diver should take a look at the abject dabbling of sport's biggest stars before making the switch
Although nobody would deny Team Gb the opportunity to cash in on their hard-won successes this summer, you can't help but wish they'd be a bit pickier. Victoria Pendleton has wasted no time signing up to Strictly Come Dancing, as if the logical follow-up to being a world-class cyclist is seeing whether you can foxtrot better than Johnny Ball.
But the most troubling post-Olympic news has only just emerged. It's Tom Daley. You see, he wants to act. Asked about his long-term goals before his big homecoming parade in Plymouth this week, Daley said: "Film work, I'd love to do anything like that. I would love to try anything new really,...

The Dark Knight Rises introduces two major new characters for Batman to tangle with: Tom Hardy's villainous Bane, and Anne Hathaway's somewhat more ambiguous Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman. According to writer David Goyer, though, series director Christopher Nolan had to be convinced to use the duo in his more grounded Bat-world. "Bane is actually a cool character ... it's just some of the depictions have been kind of cheesy," Goyer told Vulture at this week's premiere. Hmmm, which depictions could he be referring to? "I'm not going to say which ones, but when I first suggested him to Chris, he said, 'Really?' And I said, 'Put all that aside, and boil down his origin,' and Tom just did an amazing, amazing job." Goyer, who received story credit on the film, says Nolan was also reluctant to use Selina Kyle: "For Catwoman, there was a little trepidation at the beginning,...
